issue with the motor. one city leader we spoke with says riders deserve better. "t" passengers getting on the orange line thursday morning at the back bay station in boston. quiet compared to the days to evening before. when riders were breaking windows and climbing out of the train as smoke filled the station during the wednesday commute. the result: of two fires. >> quite scary to see what was happening here. >> reporter: back bay station is part of commute. she says what happened is another example as to why the m.b.t.a. needs improvement. >> i heard from so many people last night who were incredibly desperate, frustrated, angry and demanding better service now. >> i'm still shaking. >> reporter: riders like tracy taylor, a pastry chef onboard during the fires. she used a knife to smash a window. >> i took my scarf. this is my eight-inch chef knife. i did. this i'm also a certified black-belt.

>> reporter: five people were treated for smoke inhalation, including taylor. >> we found a trash fire on the tracks also. they extinguished both. >> reporter: wu says this is another disappointment with "t" service. unfortunately, seeing incidents like this in the news are becoming more predictable for the m.b.t.a. >> reporter: the m.b.t.a. is defending that decision not to immediately open those doors, saying it coulde we are live from back bay, john cuoco, 7 news. >> sarah: we are hearing from a sheriff's deputy who ended a deadly rampage in taunton. in may, he shot a man who went on a stabbing spree insided a crowded restaurant. nicole oliverio live in plymouth with what he had to say. >> reporter: well, this is the first time we are hearing from him. this interview is coming just one day after the district attorney released its final report, saying that the

is a weight lifted off their shoulders. it's been more than five months since plymouth's sheriff's deputy james creed fired his first and only shot while on the job. today creed spoke out about confronting arthur darosa inside a taunton bertucci's restaurant as darosa was attacking and stabbing other customers. >> once i saw that there was a weapon involved, i took my badge out of my left pocket. it is on a chain. i drew my firearm and started giving commands. get on the ground. stop. drop the kni >> reporter: creed says darosa then came after him instead of stopping. >> he was probably six, seven feet from me. a little too close. training-wise. but in all honesty, i was trying to give him every chance to comply to get on the ground before i had to do anything. that was the last thing i wanted to do. >> reporter: creed shot and killed da rosa. the d.a.'s offers says the shooting was justified. and the moments before the deadly confrontation, darosa had stabbed and killed george heath.

from attacking a waitress. heath's wife rosemary rushed to her husband's side. >> i stopped thinking about him the minute george was stabbed. i immediately just went to the floor. jim was not there, i would have been next. he was so close to me. i know it. i know it. >> reporter: creed had been at the restaurant with his wife who was a nurse. she also rushed to help the victim. >> when something happens, you know, he helps and i run. but it wasn't... i wasn't leaving anywhere without him. >> reporter: deputy creed said it appeared that darosa had a glazed look in his eyes. as he was charging toward him, he said "you and i are going to die today." >> sarah: breaking news right now. state police have shut down part of the mass. pike in warren after troopers say someone was struck and killed on the side of the road there. according to state police,

right now, the right lane and breakdown lane are closed for investigation. we are going to stay on top of this breaking news story. we will bring you the latest as soon as it comes into the newsroom. >> anchor: a live look outside. cold weather not letting up. temperatures the lowest they have been since last april. chris lambert is here now with more. >> chris: yeah. that puts it cold enough across new england. we have seen some snow from vermont to western massachusetts. especially down through connecticut. this is where it's steadiest over the last few hours. slushy coating to an inch on the grassy surfaces. and the colder surfaces down here and much of connecticut this morning. you note the eastern edges of connecticut, how you switch the precipitation type over to the green showing up on the radar. that is because the air on the eastern half of southern new england is too warm to support any snow. we are a far cry from the freezing mark in boston. at 47 right now. although it is cooler in worcester at 38. 42 in fitchburg. 39 in jaffrey, new hampshire.

temperatures may drop off a little bit. i wouldn't be surprised to see some wet snowflakes mixed in outside 495 for a little while early this afternoon. predominantly, we are talking about a rain event for central massachusetts. as well as eastern massachusetts. the heaviest of the rain will be tonight. localized downpours tonight. and a coastal wind that will gust near 40-50 miles an hour. after midnight tonight. also does develop. we have plenty to talk about. we will talk more on that coming up. >> anchor: chris, thank you. morning. this broke out on pine acres road just after 8:00 a.m. the fire started on a porch and quickly spread to the rest of the home. the one person in the home did make it out safely. the fire is under investigation. a house in clinton goes up in flames. fire crews rushed to the green street home around 6:00 this morning. you can see the heavy smoke throughout the area. fire officials say no one was living in the house and there were no injuries. investigators are working to determine the cause of that fire.

police say an uber driver crashed into a beacon hill home. witnesses at the scene say the driver was speeding when it happened. victoria warren has the latest on the crash. >> reporter: car slamming right into a brick wall in beacon hill. two people in the car at the time. the driver drives for uber. the woman, his passenger. >> i thought they was dead. he was going so fast. i'm surprised they both got out of the car. report th witness doesn't want to show his face. he says something happened right before the crash. >> so there at the end of the street. so when i walked to the end of the street, i seen this white car come flying up the hill. >> reporter: he says there was no stopping it. >> and ran straight smack into the wall. like, he was going so fast. no brakes or nothing. >> no skid marks. didn't look like there was any attempt to slow down the car. from what we have been told, bricks actually went from here all the way to the front of

>> reporter: the uber driver and passenger both went to the hospital. they are going to be okay. luckily no, one was home, and the unit that took the brunt of the impact, the home owner arrived to emergency crews and a gaping hole in her house. >> can you tell us what happened here? >> i really can't because i wasn't there. everyone is okay. >> god was with them. god was with them. report t driver has been with uber for two years. they are looking into how something like this happened. boston police continue their investigation. they say at this point, there are no charges. they want to see if that first crash somehow caused a chain reaction that led to this. on beacon hill, victoria warren, 7 news. >> anchor: the presidential election is 12 days away now. both donald trump and hillary clinton campaigning today in key battleground states. new polls have trump leaving in florida.

dan? >> reporter: well, that is a bloomberg poll. that has trump's two-point lead well within the margin of error. it is a change from the polls which had hillary clinton leading earlier in the month. those who said this race is over may have spoken too soon. donald trump hitting the gas in north carolina. >> if we win on november, we are going to washington d.c., and we are going to drain the swamp. >> reporter: as trump leaves north carolina for events in ohio, he will be replaced by hick, campaigning with first lady michelle obama. with most polls still showing a national lead for clinton. she said wednesday she is not taking anything for granted. but she did seem to be looking well past election day. >> i certainly intend to reach out to republicans and independents terx lekted leadership of the congress. >> reporter: republican nominee mike pence somewhat scoffing at that comment and predicting a trump win.

her way to being a private citizen, she is going to meet with the leadership and the congress. reporth a new poll shows pence and clinton running mate tim kaine would perform better than the top of the ticket. that poll calling a hypothetical pence-kaine race a virtual tie. tim kaine in ohio last night for game two of the world series cheering on the indians, and hoping for a win himself. a spoiler alert there, by the way. cleveland lost. expect the indians, though, to get most of the candidate's love. and illinois is not. in the newsroom, dan hausle, 7 news. >> sarah: in new york, one person is dead and five injured in an overnight apartment fire in manhattan. the fire broke out around 3:30 this morning in a building on the city's upper east side. it quickly spread to two nearby buildings. officials say one of the five injured is in critical condition. the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. a strong tremor rocked a small

their way into worcester county, as we speak. the precipitation overall battling the dry air that's been in place since this morning. we really didn't expect much this morning. rain mixed with snow would start to settle on. in that seems to be the case at this point. you can see the eastern edge of the precipitation mixing in with some rain-drops. the lowest levels of the atmosphere now warming up well above the freezing mark. when it is 47 degrees in boston. 49 in plymouth. however, worcester at 38. even when it is in the upper 30's, this above the freezing mark, you can get some spotty wet snowflakes and flurries in here. i think we have seen that in portions of worcester county and getting close to the massachusetts-rhode island, connecticut border. sort of that triangle in that way. dew point levels down in the upper 20's out through worcester county.

little built of evaporating cooling. we can see a little built of snow mixed in at times into worcester county this afternoon. i'm not expecting much in the way of accumulation. although you get into hillier terrain, west of the city, up into rutlan, and witchington and there may be a few towns that pick up a coating of slush on the grassy surfaces of the car-tops. predominantly, thinking western new england has the best chance ofic the berkshires, monadnocks: the higher terrain of vermont. especially across the mountains of maine. the story late this afternoon and tonight is not the snow. but it's the rain. and the rain will be heavy at times overnight tonight. close to midnight by a couple hours either side of it. and a gusty wind starts to develop. that wind is coming in off the water. we will be strongest along the coastline. again, three, four inches of snow. higher terrain, the berkshires up into southern vermont. certainly a possibility.

pumpkins plucked from a farm there. four suspects methodically grabbing the gourds at night. it was a pricey heist, too. they took off with more than 2,000 dollars of pumpkins. >> sarah: police are hoping that footage will help lead them to the suspects. even at night, it is clear as day. caught on camera: four people stealing dozens of pumpkins from a new jersey farm. >> i pulled in. and half of my display was gone. >> sarah: about 200 pumpkins worth more than $2,000 t four young men, came three different times to grab their loot. >> it is not funny at all. this is blatant thievery. it is not a prank. a prank is when you do something and everybody laughs about it. i'm not laughing. >> reporter: todd's family has owned and operated the farm and market for over 120 years. >> i work really hard. this is how we make our living to pay our bills. it is about the principle. >> reporter: the farm security system includes a license plate detection program.

>> sarah: a university of wisconsin student accused of rape is facing more sexual assault charges. additional victims have come forward claiming the 20-year-old raped them. >> anchor: today the suspect is back in court appearing before a judge. this morning, the university of wisconsin is in shock as multiple women accuse a >> it's been pretty devastating. >> reporter: alec cook faces nine charges involving four women. prosecutors say many more counts are possible. investigators searching his apartment say they found a black book in his night-stand with names of women he met. describing in a very systematic way what he wanted to do to them. according to the search warrant, disturbingly enough, there were statements of kill and sexual desires.

bunch of rain to move in later this afternoon and this evening. in the meantime, still residual cold air left in place. snowflakes flying. flurryies, at. that northern worcester county and west of worcester. much of worcester county will likely see some flakes mixed in with some rain-drops over the next couple of hours. steldier snow entering the berkshires and western connecticut. the snow has been steadiest across connecticut so far this morning and early this afternoon. eventually, the warm air, the mild air winning on out. temperatures will be too warm to support much snow. yoan 47 degrees. 38 in worcester. 42 in fitchburg. 39 in jaffrey. again, once we get into some precipitation for a few hours this afternoon in worcester county, temperatures may dip off a couple of degrees. a little built of wet snow mixed in. mainly, a rain event. the heaviest rain, a couple of hours either side of midnight. we will talk more in the 7-day forecast ahead. >> sarah: now on just one station: accused computer

appearance: gotfeld made claims on-line that he hacked two web sites to defend a connecticut teenager who claims she was kept at boston children's hospital without her family's permission. the hack attacks cost the facilities more than $300,000. gotfeld's wife says he has been on a hunger strike for more than three weeks. >> you think he is willing to die for it? >> he is not going to stop striking until he gets somewhere. and he is >> sarah: gotfeld received medical treatment from a nurse in the courtroom after collapsing. >> anchor: some frightening moments in marblehead on a bike path. a man exposed himself to a woman and then tried to grab her. he got away on a bike. now detectives are trying to track him down. police fled a popular walking trail in marble hefd, searching for a man who exposed himself and tried to grab a woman on wednesday. >> i find that sort of shocking.

>> reporter: the woman in her 40's, says she was walking alone on the rail trail near 114 at the marblehead-salem line. a man leaning against a fence lunged towards her. >> she realized he was exposing himself and coming towards her, reaching out to get her. >> reporter: the woman wasn't hurt. other people nearby called 911. the suspect rode off on a bicycle. schools in the area were also notified of the incident. one school quickly moved students who were outside inside. >> we mildly went into lockdown. you know, obviously, t >> reporter: police say they will have increased patrols in the area throughout the week. >> sarah: more news today: cockpit concerns in south dakota. an airline pilot accused of being drugged pulled from his flight. the 38-year-old was already onboard the plane head odd to salt lake city when he was taken into custody. tsa officials say he smelled of alcohol. according to police, his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. one passenger flying with his nine-year-old son calling the situation outrageous.

my son, or frankly, killed us if the plane goes down based upon him just showing up to work drunk. absolutely ridiculous. >> reporter: the pilot was released on bail and has been placed on administrative leave. >> anchor: investigators say alcohol played a role in the boating accident that killed an all-star major-league pitcher. miami marlins star jose fernandez and two friends were killed when their boat crashed off of the coast of florida last month. according to investigators, their bodies had a strong odor of alcohol recovered by divers. they also found drink receipts from a bar the men had visited prior to the crash. officials say speed was a factor in that crash as well. the orlando magic honored victims and survivors of the pulse nightclub shooting before their season opener last night. more than one hundred survivors and family members who lost loved ones were at that ceremony. the trib yult included a moment of silence and a banner raised to the rafters. remembering the 49 lives lost

first responders from the night of the attacks were also honored. >> sarah: a police chase caught on camera in arizona. authorities say a man went through an in-and-out burger drive-through while being pursued by police. the man apparently ordered food before speeding off. officers were following the pick-up on a low-speed pursuit on city streets. the man was later arrested after he jumped from the truck. a car barreling right through thro supply store. people inside jolted and quickly dashing out of the way. and this is not the first time a car ended up inside the store. frightening moments inside this oakland park beauty supply store wednesday afternoon when a car comes crashing through the front door. employees and customers barely getting out of harm's way. >> they saw that explosion. like, boom.

coating to an inch of snow throughout a lot of connecticut on the grass surfaces. and the cold surfaces such as the car-top or the deck or picnic table. seeing those pictures on twitter. even here, the rain will overpower the cold air eventually. most accumulations across southern new england will be in the berkshires. with highest terrain picking up three, four inches of snow out of this. way too warm across eastern massachusetts. 47-49 degrees. to support anything rainfall. but once you are near 40 and even into the up 0er's, you can get some snowflakes to mix in. and we are seeing that. out closer to 49 and certainly, across western worcester county. in the higher terrain. there is a lot of dry air. initially, when the precipitation does fall in worcester county, those temperatures may come down a couple of degrees before eventually, rising later tonight. current temperatures down through southeastern massachusetts, in the near 40's to near 50. that includes the cape and the islands.
