happened in an instant. >> it's surreal. i've never seen anything happen like this in my entire life. >> terrifying moments before noon today. the driver of this red chevy collided with engine 7 headed to a call. >> it was shocking. >> the crash touched off a demolition derby that sent the fire truck up on two wheels, cast kaeding down the sidewalk brushing two suvs and damaging eight other parked cars. witnesses scrambled into action. the driver of the car. >> i opened up the car door to make sure nobody was inside. my mom is a nurse. >> that driver and four firefighters were taken to mass general hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. the fire commissioner says they're still trying to figure out what happened. >> witnesses have made the assumption that the driver -- the light changed and the driver kind of went out into the intersection and then made contact with the apparatus. >> reporter: the crash scene

the boston police accident reconstruction unit worked to piece it together. one by one the twisted metal and mangled mess is methodically untangled and towed away with everyone thankful no one was seriously hurt here. >> i thought of it today that i hope no one is under a car or firefighters, civilians and no one is hurt or dead. >> boston police are hoping to get a look at the video from that surveillance camera that is trained on this say is their investigation into what happened today is still being looked at right now. live in the back bay tonight, steve cooper, 7 news. we have more coverage of this crash course in boston. officials say it's very, very fortunate that no pedestrians were involved here with this all happening at such a busy and congested area. alex is on the scene and talked with witnesses who heard it all happen. alex.

we're in the low 40s. 47 in the city of boston, so the jacket, the coat is necessary. plus a light wind out of the north-northwest may add an extra chill to the air as well. mostly clear skies, so it's a dry halloween forecast for us. in fact, we keep it dry through thursday of this week. here's the trick-or-treat forecast. sun is gone and down. things have gotten quite spooky, so i'll take this guy away here. we're in the low 40s, a upper 30s. wait and see how cold tomorrow morning will be. more details coming up in the extended forecast. also on 7, keep the change. crews on the mass pike working to demolish manual toll booths and the first monday commute since the switch to electronic tolls on friday has actually been pretty smooth so far. we heard a lot from transportation ofirnls warning for heavy delays, but i don't know if it's halloween or people stayed home.

brandon is live on the pike in weston. how is everything tonight, brandon? it looks like it's moving. >> reporter: it's moving great, kim. over the weekend state leaders said traffic would be comparable to a snowstorm. that didn't happen. look at sky 7 in the evening commute here. you can see traffic has been flowing rather well, and crews say that's because there's so ahead of schedule. the toll booths in weston have been demolished. sky 7hd over the the first weekday demolition took place during the commute, and traffic was relatively smooth. >> it was super easy today and straightforward. there was no traffic today. i thought it was a holiday or something. >> they say transportation was 6% to 10% lighter meaning many heeded the warnings. >> because today was so not a big deal, it could definitely

foor the first phase they drive in the outside lanes and for phase two the outside booths are demolished. >> i left earlier and i was spriedzed to see there was not a lot of traffic. i guess everybody else lefter too. >> they tore down the center booths and paved the center lanes and state officials hope to stay ahead of schedule. >> we want to have done as we can by the time we come towards the early and mid-part of the november when people make plans around thanksgiving. >> reporter: back out live on sky 7. this is the first evening commute with the toll deck ligs in full effect. traffic is flowing relatively well. again, crews say they're ahead of schedule with more than half of all the old tol booths already torn down. we're live in weston on the pike, brandon gunnoe, 7 news.

confrontation in lowell. joseph attacked a 15-year-old at a party friday night slamming him headfirst into the ground. he died from brain injuries. he's charged with assault and battery, but those are expected to be upgraded. his family says the whole story hasn't come out. >> he's feeling horrible, too. it's an unfortunate situation. we don't know the whole case. we haven't really talked to joe. we just got to get back and talk to joe. >> kids involved, and i hope that justice on that sight. i'm sorry for the boy's family. >> police say he was not drinking during the incident. he's being held on bail. the mbta releases surveillance video of the person accused of attack a trolley prarpt wearing a halloween costume complete with mask. investigators say it happened just after midnight sunday morning at the cedar grove station. they say the man didn't have money to pay the fare, and then

pulling him out of the trolley. that employee suffering minor injuries and anyone who recognizes that guy or has any information at all is asked to contact police. right now crowds in canton gather to protest electric shock therapy. sky 7hd just over the scene at the judge rattenberg center, the only facility in the country still usings electric shock devices. back in the fda they were going to ban it, but they haven't to the election countdown. can you believe just eight days left? democrat hillary clinton's latest e-mail scandal dominating the headlines as the candidates head into this homestretch. some democrats are claiming the disclosure may have been broken the law. ryan with more no w. >> thank you. the justice department dedicate all resours to quickly review the e-mails in the case.

a frightening scene in salem. a woman and her two daughters hit by a suspected drunk driver. they were in town to celebrate halloween over the weekend. instead, they all three end up in the hospital. >> and today that driver you mentioned faced a judge. kelli o'hara is live in salem to tell us more. kelli. >> with tears in his eyes, 52-year-old dexter mitchell stands silently in court as he listens to a prosecutor describe what happened the night before. >> the defendant driving a motor vehicle, striking the three pedestrians, two of which are small children, and then fleeing the scene. >> reporter: mitchell is accused of driving drunk on sunday night and hitting a mother and two daughters crossing the street. the beverly father and special needs teacher allegedly took off from the scene where witnesses spotted him moments later. >> prior to the defendant approaching the police officer, he pulled up a dumpster and take out of his car what was later identified to be several beer

low to mid-40s for us. nothing too scary for the trick-or-treating forecast. mostly clear skies and it will stay dry for us. the mostly clear skies means that our temperatures will fall back very, very quickly into later evening hours. so just an hour from now into the low 40s, and then by 9:00 p.m. we're talking upper 30s for some of us. so watching the time line here, we're in the 40s and then we troop into the upper 30s by 9:00

plummeting, and by the time we wake up tomorrow morning, we're talking about some mid to upper 20s not out of the question for some of those coldest spots, norwood, bedford, nashua and new hampshire and orange as well. mostically clear and chilly. 26 to 38 for the overnight lows. the kiddos at the bus stop tomorrow morning, the sugar rush will wear off and they need a heavier jacket. even for boston, which is the warmest spot oe typically, we talk upper 30s for the lowest temperature tomorrow. we get a bit of a warm-up heading into wednesday and thursday. temperatures not necessarily warm but mild, and we keep things dry until late thursday as well. some showers that moved through, i think, after dark on thursday and wrap up by friday. look at the colder temperatures that that front will usher in. it's breezy and chilly for friday and keeps getting cooler from there. don't forget, we have to fall
