police got the call around 7:00 a.m. when they got there, they described what they saw, it looked like a bomb had gone off. >> this was a significant, significant wreck. so there are still portions of the bus that our people have not been able to fully access. >> reporter: the yellow school bus was going along, crashed into a mustang, then collided with a pillar on the side of the road. that kaupzed it to careen into opposite traffic. that is when it collided with the mta bus. g baltimore police earlier this morning. >> we have, unfortunately, six families that we have to notify that their loved ones aren't coming home. >> we are happy to confirm there were no children hurt. but there are multiple fatalities, and it is still a developing situation. that number could change throughout the day. right now, in baltimore, i'm omar jimenez, nbc news. >> christa: now a scary scene that happened on halloween night. a four-year-old boy was hit by a car up in lowell while he was just out

right now that, boy is suffering a gash on his head. he is recovering. driver, meantime, initially took off. but police eventually tracked this person down. let's go out to lowell right now. jennifer eagan following this story. and christa, police are identifying that driver, that female driver as a 27-year-old. she is being cited for leaving the scene of an accident with injury. a neighbor we spoke with said there were several children around trick-or-treating at the time of this accident. many people rushed to this young boy's side. a four-year-old boy out trick-or-treating hit while crossing marshal avenue in lowell last night. >> oh, my goodness. i hope he is okay. what a horrible way to have halloween happen to you. >> reporter: judy o'hara rushed to the boy's side. he had a large gash on his head. >> it was right here on the side of his head. yeah. we didn't want to move him too much. just enough to assess that he wasn't bleeding. you know, too much. he was crying, like, softly.

and he knew his mom. so that was, you know, that was positive. >> there is nothing to indicate any speed. the problem is she didn't stay. >> reporter: the 27-year-old woman behind the wheel, got out, exchanged words with the boy's family, then left the scene. >> the witness followed the car for a while. probably within ten minutes of that, another officer found the car on broadway. >> reporter: that driver is being cited for leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. street are hoping the young boy is okay. >> our hearts go out to everyone involved in the situation. prayers to the loyal boy and his mom. report tt boy was taken to tufts medical center. he underwent surgery. he is expected to be okay. police say another trick or treater was hit on mt. washington street last night. that child had minor injuries. the driver in that case did stop at the scene. there are no charges or citations.

the judge apparently has some concerns. for the latest on that, we go live to federal court and steve cooper. steve? >> reporter: christa, this hearing lasted about an hour and a half up on the fifth floor here at the federal courthouse in south boston. just breaking up a short time ago. but whether or not sal dimasi is released on time served, that is something the judge will decide. >> how is your husband doing? >> he is not good. >> are you hopeful he will get out? >> i'm cautiously optimistic. >> reporter: debby dimasi leaves court with her family after a 90-minute hearing where she is hoping her husband, the former massachusetts house speaker sal dimasi will be released early from his eight-year prison term following his conviction on corruption charges. how is he doing? >> not well. he is not doing well at all. i think we have explained to the court that he is quite sick.

he is suffering from throat cancer. having served nearly five years of his term. he can barely swallow now from several chemotherapy treatments. both the defense and prosecutors have recommended the 71-year-old be released under the compassionate release program. >> sal dimasi deserve special treatment because he is a former speaker of the house? >> you know, we have never said that he did. and that is not what the judge is considering. he is not going get special treatment because he was a former speaker. >> reporter: the is concerned about the appearance of preferential treatment. and so again, the judge here, judge wolf is basically trying to decide whether or not he will release him with strict conditions. keep in mind that judge wolf was the judge who sentenced dimasi back in 2011. but for now, he has taken this request under advisement. live from south boston outside federal court, steve cooper, 7 news. >> christa: we are following breaking news in baltimore.

there. it definitely has been chilly today. >> christa: yeah. i'm hoping we are going to gets this warm-up. the roller-coaster ride continues. >> chris: if not, my forecast is wrong. i don't want to have a bad forecast out there. i do expect temperatures back into the 6's tomorrow afternoon and thursday afternoon. how about the month of october? a little bit above average. by a degree and a third there. the warmest day we had a couple of weeks ago at 81. finally, seeing more rain than average. in fact, last month was the first month precipitation-wise since february. one of the wettest months we have had since december of 2014. you have to go back a couple of years since we had that much rain in boston. overall, precipitation deficits still quite a bit aways from the average here. departing average, nine inches in boston. over six in worcester. we have a ways to go to put a huge dent in the drought. although we have made some steps toward progress here. over the last five six weeks. across a lot of southern new england.

anything else. at times, a few patches of clouds working on in. sure, it is cool across new england. look at where the mild air is. back into buffalo. green bay, mid-6's. detroit, 67. this is the air that will be with us tomorrow. we do have warm weather ahead of us. the tradeoff, more clouds around. i do expect more clouds tomorrow to be in the mix. overall, temperatures running into the mid-60's. not a lot to complain about tomorrow afternoon. thursday, we may complain about the wet weather that comes on in and dampens u evening commute thursday into thursday night. we still need the rainfall. many times we pick up half an inch of rain. we are back to cooler air. probably a 20-degree difference at least from thursday afternoon to friday afternoon. so much cooler weather pouring back into new england. as we end the week and head into the weekend. thursday, again, there is your rain chance. otherwise, the week and weekend looking on the dry side. 51-56 this afternoon.

a light breeze on-shore. overnight tonight, not as cold. we will briefly fall back for a little while here in the evening. into the upper's in some of the cooler spots. more likely than anything else, temperatures rise a few degrees late overnight tonight by daybreak tomorrow. many towns start off the day for the morning commute, mid to upper 40's. you walk out the door. you note the change in the morning. we will continue to warm up as we get into the afternoon and back into the 60's. mid-60's on average. including boston. daylight savings time ends early on sunday morning. the clocks go back one hour. yeah: the sun sets at 4:31. if you want to look at it glass half-full, optimistically here. you catch an extra hour of sleep over the weekend. i know. hard to fathom here. it gets dark before 5:00. right? 7 on 7 forecast. taking you through the weekend. temperature-wise, not bad.
