>> this is surreal. i never, i never in a million years would have thought it would be her >> reporter: hearbreak for family and friends. f investigators say glorubel orengo was killed saturday night on pawtucket boulevard. she was with her special-needs 28-year-old son. >> my cousin does not deserve this. they show they beat her. >> reporter: now police are searching for suspects. >> it is scary. now, it used to be a nice little village. now it is going to get a bad name because of this. >> reporter: orengo died after she was asked to leave party earlier in the night. now relatives hope the person or the people responsible for her death come forward. >> sometimes stepping up and stepping in is what you need to do.

they had to brush off their cars this morning. some people had to do some ice-scraping. this is lowell where the snow definitely started to stick. the concern right now: the potential for strong winds. fvrbs let's get the latest look at the forecast now. >> reporter: that's right. our attention has shifted from the snow this morning. it was really a dusting for most of us. over to some stronger winds. you can still see that lake-effect very nicely. this will continue to push east into western connecticut and western massachusetts. we for seeing some showers and snow showers here as we head into the rest of the day. you can tell, we are largely clear in eastern massachusetts. i think if we do manage some snow. again, most of that will stay near the berkshires. they could grab another inch or two of snow here today. our attention really does turn over to these winds. which have been very strong. wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour are likely for us. already some reports of some roofs... actually houses being damaged from the national weather service.

tonight. a closer look at how strong these wind gusts are. worcester seeing wind gusts up to around 40 miles per hour right now. it is going to be a breezy day throughout the day. stay warm and hold on tight. >> christa: dozens speaking out against hate at this rally at the statehouse. mayor marty walsh was among the people attending that event. 7's byron barnett is live at the statehouse with more. byron? big rally here at the statehouse today. organized primarily, by the antidefamation league and the main message today was stop the hate. now, several hundred people rallied on the steps of the statehouse, spilling out into the streets in the area. causing lots of congestion. this is in opposition to numerous reported hate crimes across the country. since the presidential election. the crowd heard from several political leaders here, including the mayor, the house speaker, the senate president

says he was harassed in cambridge last week. a harvard law student. he is not a muslim. he wears a head dress that in tradition, with his religion. many bystanders saw him being ma rassed. no one said anything. >> he called me an f-ing muslim. he followed me around the store, trying to guess where i was from. i said "hey, i'm born and raised in new york. i go to street. is there anything i can do to help you?" he continued to stare at me. he didn't respond to. that fortunately, he didn't follow me out of the store. what i took away from the event and what i hope to share here with the group is that in situations like that, it is really important to have bystanders who will intervene and who will talk to the person who is being targeted and make sure they feel safe. >> reporter: and several of the folks here today, including mayor walsh say they believe that president-elect

responsibility to say much more than he already has been saying about hate crimes that are going on across the country. that is the latest live here near the statehouse, i'm byron barnett, 7 news. >> kris: now turning to a series of attacks against police officers in texas. manhunt continues after an officer was killed during an ambush. it is one of the four incidents of officers being shot in three different states. now officials are calling them targeted attacks. >> most families will be celebrating the holidays. sapd will be burying one of its own. report t police chief briefing the press after what authorities describe as a targeted deadly shooting of an officer on sunday. >> it is everyone's worst night their. ... nightmare. report t 50-year-old detective was killed in his patrol car outside of police headquarters. he had just returned to his vehicle to write a ticket for a driver he pulled over. another driver pulled up

approached the detective's window. the assailant then shot marconi in the head. reached through the window, and shot a second time. then he fled the scene in what police believe was a black sedan. in st. louis, another officer shot sunday in what authorities are calling a targeted attack. the 46-year-old sergeant ambushed when police say fast vehicle pulled up next to his marked car and omd fire. >> this officer was not involved in a traffic stop. this officer was not trying to pull this car over. twice in the head but is expected to survive. the suspect was later killed after, again, shooting at officers. also in missouri, an officer shot in gladstone, near kansas city, the governor asking for prayers for that officer. and in florida, yet another shooting. the officer hospitalized after being shot during a traffic stop. the suspect taken into custody after an exchange of gunfire with police. police, again, say there is no

man accused in a hit-and-run in chelsea ordered held on $2,000 bail. 25-year-old arnold hernandez was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license. he claims he did not see the 72-year-old woman he hit with his car friday morning on broadway. the woman suffered non-life-tleltening injuries. federal prosecutors rest their case as they argue for the execution of convicted murderer gary lee sampson. sampson was convicted of killing three people. he was sentenced to death. two of the victims were from massachusetts. one from new hampshire overturned because of juror misconduct. this retrial will decide if he serves life in prison or if he heads back on death row. the latest now on the trump transition. former senator scott brown being considered for the president-elect's cabinet. >> kris: yeah. he has spoken about the secretary of veterans affairs position. a short time ago, in fact, brown spoke at trump tower in new york. >> it was a great meeting with the president-elect. he is focused.

>> reporter: so is former new york mayor and campaign confidant rudy giuliani. chris christie who was ousted as head of the transition had a 30-minute sitdown with the president-elect. >> a very talented man. >> reporter: the kansas secretary of state was called. in he has been tough on immigration. the retired marine corps general james mattis seems to be a favorite for secretary of defense. mr. trump tweeted that mattis was impressive. billionaire investor being considered as commerce secretary. the new administration will have to deal with democrats in congress poised to put up a fight. but signaling cooperation in some areas. >> we could get a major infrastructure build done. but maybe even in the first hundred days. >> reporter: but first, securing a cabinet. that continues today. and that continues today with former texas governor rick perry due at trump tower to talk about what we are told is

you know how they say it is not the heat. it is the humidity. it is not the cold. it is the wind. that is exactly right, christa. it is very cold. it doesn't look too bad out there. it does feel bad. a cold start to your workweek. much cooler air than what we have experienced this season. you factor in the winds. feels downright chilly. we will continue to see a windy day throughout the day. even into tonight. we are actually off to a windy stretch to kick off the week here. windy into tomorrow as well. the good news: we do open up to more sunshine take a look at what it's feeling like outside right now. feeling like upper 20's here in boston. we have started to warm up. we are warmed up about eight dedegrees since this morning. cool no matter where you are. we will stay that way throughout the day today. low pressure sitting further to our north. we are seeing westerly winds. in association with that low pressure fbs. actually, some lake-effect still in new york. some lake-effect streamers are heading into western massachusetts as well as

only impressive ones look to stay in the berkshires. but we have the slight chance for a couple more flurries here in east boston as well. eastern boston. you can see some of the activity on satellite and radar. middle east of this is further west of worcester. we are looking at these winds heading on very strongly for us. sustained winds actually up to 35. 37 miles per hour. that is pretty strong. dorchester already having a damage to different houses in association with these wind speeds. i think main issue for us here today is driving conditions. if you are driving on those north to southbound roads, you are dealing with strong westerly winds. they are copping perpendicular at you. on bridges, overpasses, or a high-profile vehicle, this is definitely going to impact commutes. you can see these wind speeds are close to 30 miles per hour in worcester. close to 25 miles per hour winds across the coast.

45-mile-per-hour winds this morning across the islands. definitely cool this afternoon. our highs in the low 40's. i actually they lot of us will struggle to get there. we are already in the upper 30's for many of us. here sa look at what our highs are going to feel like. when you factor in the winds. mid to up 20er's for most of us. even some of us, jafer ree, worcester, orange, mid to low 20's. a very cool day for us. that will stay that way, actually. even into tonight. highs for most of us, in the low 40's and upper 3 tonight. they die off a little. wind gusts up to 30-40 miles per hour. lows for most of us, in the upper 20's. we will see a couple clouds tonight. temperatures moderate a little bit. we will look at high pressure by the middle of the workweek. easy travel, if you are traveling wednesday for the holiday for thanksgiving. you are in good shape. by thursday morning, when thanksgiving morning, we could be talking about a wintry mix, though. wednesday is going to be the

>> one more guy off of here! >> kris:s a rescue at sea off the coast of new bedford. the coast guard rushing in to help those people. a fishing boat >> christa: the rescue was not an easy one. choppy waves made it difficult to reach the boat. >> reporter: rough waters in a rescue at sea. a coast guard helicopter crew sent a swimmer into the ocean to save six people. >> roger that! give me five more minutes! i'm going to get one more guy off of here! >> reporter: the captain jeff, a scallop boat got into trouble 9:30 sunday morning. it was sinking five miles off the coast of new bedford. the coast guard credits the

bedford for getting on site quickly. >> they spraung leak. they are not sure where the leak originated. they will have a diver go down and take a look where the leak might be to patch it up and bring it into the dock. >> reporter: the coast guard rescue swimmer tried to control the flooding with pumps. the effort was too little to late. then it was time for the diver to jump ship. >> i tell you what, it would be easier >> reporter: a salvage crew towed the captain jeff into new bedford. the investigation into the cause of the leak is under way. jennifer eagan, 7 news. >> christa: the home port is in north carolina. everybody on the boat was checked out on shore. luckily no, one was hurt. >> kris: coming up at noon, workers at chicago's o'hare airport preparing to walk off the jock.

well. again, our main concern today will be these winds. we are currently under a wind advisory now until 10:00 tonight. we could look at wind gusts up to around 50 miles per hour. some tree limbs scattered as well as the potential for some power outages. those are concerns today. if you are driving out there and off high-profile vehicle, i would expect to see a slowlyer commute. especially on the north to southbound roadways. wind gusts right now are up to around 40 miles per hour. definitely a breezy day throughout the day. more on the holiday forecast after the break. >> kris: more than 30 groups and organizations are taking part in an anti-hate rally at the statehouse. the boston mayor marty walsh and attorney general maura healey are there. last week, maura healey set up a harassment hot line that has received more than 300 calls. >> christa: a wild chase ending with a crash. police are still on the lookout for two people who took off running from the scene. john cuoco with more.

then i heard more. a big bang. then the house shook. >> reporter: sudden shock on sunday. this s.u.v. plowed through a two-story home in northborough. >> it hit the house. it cleared out all the shrubs. >> reporter: state police say right before the crash, troopers were pursuing the s.u.v. from route 495 on to route 290 with speeds between 80-110 miles per hour. before they decided to back off. >> it is a living room right there. my grandma is sitting flight her chair. a brick went through th it was pretty close her chair. twrort suspects jumped out and ran off. >> i heard people arguing. i was more worried about the car in the front of the yard. >> police continue to search for the suspects. as for the home, the extent of the damage is so bad, this family will now spend thanksgiving and possibly christmas in a hotel. >> own up to it. basically. be a man.

investigators are still looking for the suspects. if you have any information, you are asked to give police a call. in northborough, john cuoco, 7 news. >> kris: some students in lawrence return to school this morning. about half of the children in the butler street school will go back to class after a fire whipped through the classroom last monday. grades 3-5 will be in school while grades 6-8 will return next week. officials estimate about $300,000 of damage from that fire. a man due in court today after police say he assaulted a pair of boston police officers spotted a man smoking on the common which violates a municipal ordinance. well, that's when they learned the suspect was wanted on an outstanding warrant in connecticut. when they tried to arrest him, there was a struggle. >> christa: boston's first night fireworks could be moved to copley square. the event planning company says it costs about $300,000

calls a grave sin of abortion. the pope had granted special permission to priests to do so over the last year. which he declared a holy year of mercy. that ended on sunday, but the special permission now continues. previously only some priests were girn the ability to absolve catholics for abortion. law enforcement stepping in as pipeline protests in north dakota turn violent. nearly 400 protesters have been lighting cars and objects on fire overnight. police began firing tear gas and some demonstrators say firefighters intentionally sprayed them with the water canons. firefighters say that those firefighters were using the hoses to put out the fires set by protesters. officials say one person has been arrested. the protesters are fighting against that pipeline project, saying it will hurt the environment and destroy some historic native-american sites. >> christa: workers at o'hare international airport in chicago have announced when

>> kris: all right. welcome, winter. a chilly start to the day. we saw some snow showers falling overnight and into the morning. made for a tricky commute this morning. >> christa: really was. allowed a little extra i love the sound of resignation in your voice. i know, right? roll with it. i guess. >> >> reporter: i know. i'm excited. it is nice to see bright white on the ground. we have more headed our way. for now, though, it was a little built of a taste of winter. it is going to be cold throughout the day today. and windy today. into tomorrow. we have a windy stretch of weather ahead. the good news is by tomorrow, we are talking more sunshine. for today, cool, cloudy, and very windy. it is feeling like upper 20's in boston. feeling like 27 in bedford,

degrees is what it's feeling like in worcester here right now. you can see satellite and radar showing those snow showers still in new england. we are seeing some snow showers creep into western massachusetts as well as western connecticut. some streamers of lake-effect snow coming off of lake erie. that will continue into much of the day here. winds are out of the west. they are blustery. pretty relentless. it will stay that way throughout the day. even into tonight, we are talking windy conditions. a couple of spotty snow showers here in worcester county. we are dry here in eastern massachusetts. if we see flakes, that will be a dusting. the main concern are these winds. the wind advisory is currently in effect. that will be in effect until late tonight. even after that point, we are talking about wind gusts that could get up to around 30, 40 miles per hour.

we could see some scattered tree limbs as well. and difficult driving conditions. especially on the northbound to southbound highways. as you do have this westerly wind. cutting perpendicular into high-profile vehicles. that already particularly difficult. and over overpasses and bridges. some sustained winds up to 30 miles per hour currently in worcester. we will see these reach into the mid-30's in terms of the peak sustained winds we will see today. very windy conditions. temperatures are going to be about ten degrees cooler than yesterday. and n those winds. a lot of us will struggle to reach 40 degrees today. especially as you head further westward. you can see across the cape, we could see low 40's. feeling like close to 30 degrees. a lot of us actually feeling much cooler than 30 degrees. 23 in orange when you factor in the winds. here in boston, mid to upper

>> kris: a fire erupted on the highway in washington state friday night. she and her husband were on their way home when they realized the 12-volt tonka truck they bought was on fire. >> i said, we have to pull over. we have to get out of this truck. we pulled over. flames start shooting. >> the officer, when he looked on, he said tla 15-20 feet high. yeah. it was pretty shocking. >> so i went to go... they told me to get whatever i needed out of the car. like, my purse. i'm in the back grabbing my purse and stuff. as i'm leaning over, i hear pop. and then all this glass shattered in from the... then there was smoke and dust inside. >> kris: they had to call the fire department to put the flames out.
