big hole to fill in the middle of the defensive line. branch goes 350 pounds and one of the top run defenders. now we'll see how they manage without him. espn reporting the ban is for a positive marijuana test and that the 31-year-old plans to appeal his punishment. it's a blow to a run defense that's been middle of the pack this season. patriots currently 17th in the nfl allowing 131 points per game seasons was also suspended by the pats during training camp for unspecified reasons. patriots traded collins. now we'll see if losing branch even for four games is enough to really disrupt this defense. >> we're following breaking news overseas. a massive 7.3 magnitude earthquake strikes off the east coast of japan.

reuters news reports that buildings were shaking in together onand a tsunami warning issued. no reports of any injuries right now but we're staying on top of the story and as soon as we get new information, we'll let you know. >> 7 news now talking about the weather outside and it's beginning to look and feel like winter. flakes flying in lowell this morning. the storm system bringing wintery weather to the northeast and that snow forcing some buses and cars off the road in upstate new york. schools in new york and the western part of massachusetts had to delay or cancel classes. so is there more snow coming? how long are we going to feel the chill or will we warm up again? is it over now? are we headed all that direction? >> yeah. winter in front of us. we have a ways to go. right now boston 35. bedford at 33. new pattern this week, folks. i don't have any warm air this week. more chill and more wind as well.

be home in time for thanksgiving. matt morris was released today. officer morris said he wants to say thank you to everyone along his road to recovery. officer morris and officer richardson were shot multiple times during a standoff with a guy last month. suspect was killed in the shootout. >> fast forward to tomorrow when former speaker of the house will be released from is he was granted a compassionite release after suffering from tongue and prostate cancer while in the north carolina prison. he was convicted in 2011 and served five of his eight-year sentence. >> we are following more news today. police investigating a series of targeted attacks on police officers across this country. a massive manhunt is underway for the suspect who shot and killed an officer ambush style in san antonio, texas. it's one of four incidents of

now officials are searching for answers. police in san antonio, texas say they will not rest until the gunman who shot and killed a police officer is in custody. the victim, 50-year-old detective marconi was ambushed while sitting in his squad car, writing a routine traffic ticket yards from police headquarters. police say the gunman pulled up behind him, got out and shot him. >> i think that the uniform was the target and anyone who happened to -- the first person who happenedlo >> police are searching for this man who was seen briefly entering police headquarters sunday morning, several hours before the shooting. it's still unclear why he was there. they're also searching for the suspect's black mitsubishi gallant. >> we consider the suspect dangerous both to the police and to the public. >> sunday was an incredibly violent day for law enforcement across the country. four officers shot in four separate incidents. in st. louis, missouri an

face by a gunman who pulled alongside the officer's car and opened fire. the suspect was later killed in a shootout with police. two other officers were shot during traffic stops in sanibel, florida and just outside kansas city, missouri. both suffering non life threatening injuries. now as the search intensifies in san antonio, the city is mourning the loss of one of the police officers, gunned down in a cold blooded killing. >> police in san are san antonio are doubling up patrol teams a a safety precaution. two officers per patrol car until the suspect is captured . >> pope francis says every priest will be able to admonish abortion. he declared last year a holy year of mercy that ended on sunday. now that commission continues. in the past only bishops and some priests were allowed to absolve catholics for abortion.

going through chicago o'hare airports. workers will wait until after thanksgiving to strike. 500 workers are seeking union rights and a $15 an hour minimum wage. they want the public's support so they pulled back the strike for november 29. >> we respect families travelling to be together and that is why we're holding off our strike until after the thanksgiving holiday. we hope the public continues to support o'hare airport as we fight for 15 and union rights so we can afford to raise our families and celebrate upcoming holiday season. >> the workers who plan on striking include janitors, baggage handlers, cabin cleaners and wheelchair attendants. >> toy truck trouble on the highway. >> what happened while a couple was on the way home from a toy store that sparked a major recall. >> then at 5:30, searching for answer in lowell. a mother beaten to death right

it was hot. a fire u rupted in the bed of the pickup truck on the highway in washington state friday night. she and her husband were on their way home from the toys r us when they realized the 12 volt tonka truck they bought for their grandson was on fire. >> we have to pull over. we have to get out. flames start shooting. >> flames so intense and so stubborn, even the fire extinguisher wouldn't put it appeared to be 15, 20 feet high. yeah. it was pretty shocking. >> so i went to go -- they told me to get whatever i needed out of the car like my purse. i'm in the back grabbing my purse and stuff and as i'm leaning over, i hear pop and all of this glass shattered in from the -- and then there was smoke and dust inside. >> they had to call the fire department to just put the flames out. this is all that's left of their truck.

but that number is going to continuing to down because the pattern has shifted into a colder pattern and for the rest of the month, it will be at or below normal with temps. last week jet stream was off to the northwest that divided the country between cold air in canada and warm air here. then that front came blasting through southern new england yesterday morning and rearranged the furniture. now this week and beyond, we will be on the chilly side of that jet stream. you can see the cold air across the northern tier of the united states. here in new england it's about the cold and the wind as well. boston 35. worcester at 29. winds, when you factor in the wind, it feels like the temps are down to the teens and 20s. storm systems off to our north has basically come to a screeching halt and will sit in southern canada and pinwheel about with the cold winds. if you're close to the great lakes, you'll have snow. we've had snow all day through much of new york state. western new england and even a

coastline this morning. and even this afternoon, a few flurries. for tonight windy, cold, mostly clear. 24 to 31. tomorrow still cold, more wind. not quite as strong as we saw today. we saw winds at times today gusting over 40 miles an hour. tomorrow i think between 20 and 30 miles per hour but still, you know, wind is wind. it will be cold out there tomorrow. temps in the 30s and low 40s but it will feel like the 30s so your december wardrobe for the kids, layer them up. city tomorrow afternoon at the merrimack valley, worcester hills, upper 30s to around 40. barry at 37 and out on the cape and the islands, nantucket 43. wednesday lots of sunshine but less wind. still cold. temps in the low 40s. wednesday perhaps even tomorrow, big travel day. here is what the map will look like on wednesday. quiet up and down the eastern seaboard. if you have connections in the northeast, no issues, even atlanta quiet and then as you work out of atlanta to florida,

and a tsunami warning has been issued. wave is expected to be a few feet high, nothing like the 2011 tsunami there that killed thousands of people. the town where the earthquake hit is also home to a nuclear power plant. there are no reports of any injuries right now. >> we're also following breaking news from the patriots. defensive tackle branch has been suspend f the drug use for the league. >> also on 7, a deadly party in lowell leaving a mother beaten to death. altercation happening in a parking lot right in front of her son who has special needs. >> the family mourning her loss as detectives investigate her death as a homicide. steve cooper has more on this investigation. >> crime scene investigators are still working this case.
