boston highway. how this car came to rest upside down. >> reporter: a student goes on a violent rampage at ohio state. now police are looking for clues as to why. plus meet the officer hailed a hero for stopping the attacker from doing more harm. >> this is 7news "today in new england." >> reporter: good morning. i'm nicole oliverio in for sarah french. >> christa: and i'm christa delcamp. 'tis the season for being cold and getting cold. the two of us have the marlon brando voice going. >> nicole: i blame the kids. with them. >> christa: the germ factory, right? we have seen some temperature changes. we'll see some rain later on today, as well, wren. >> wren: we're talking rain and not snow. our only concern here will be freezing rain this morning, and especially in north central mass as well as western mass, those higher elevations also looking at a greater chance of seeing a freezing rain advisory currently in effect. that will be in effect until 10:00 a.m. again, that rain freezing upon contact with the ground here. you can see system of those

seen that. this is just very, very lights, but it doesn't take much of this to make for some slippery spots out on roadways. temperature-wise, low 30s for most of us. 29 degrees in orange. much warm master boston in the upper 30s. today is actually going to be mild temperature-wise, but it's going to be soggy for us. so showers are possible throughout the day. light rain during the morning hours. then this picks up the pace as we do head into the afternoon and evening. your commute home from work, probably a little dicey with rainfall. showers continuing into the evening hours. >> nicole: wren, thank you. hopefully the roads are still dry. not a lot of traffic. let's check in with danielle gersh. >> danielle: so far off to a quiet start, nicole. the zakim bridge and leverett connector, not seeing any issues. if you're getting ready to head out the door, you're in good shape. route 1 and 93 fine. braintree to boston northbound on the expressway just ten minutes. a lot of green south of town on route 3, 24 and 95. the pike wide open all the way

morning. take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. ten minutes braintree to boston northbound on on the expressway. 12 minutes into town on the pike from 128. 93 southbound, 128 to the zakim bridge, just 11 minute. the "t" and commuter rail starting the morning on schedule. back to you, guys. >> christa: we're following two big breaking stories this morning. a plane carrying a brazilian soccer team has crashed in colombia. >> nicole: also an out-of-control wildfire is tearing through a resort town in tennessee putting lives in 7's kris anderson is following breaking details. >> kris: nicole, christa, a couple big stories here, and scary scene unfolding in the town of gaithersburg, tennessee, right now. it's a resort town, very popular place. flames tearing through this tourist location known for its skiing and all sorts of resort-type activities. right now officials say at least 30 buildings have caught fire, including a popular hotel there. the dangerous scene unfolding near the great smokey mountains

of dolly parton's theme park dollywood in sevierville, which is close by. everyone inside was evacuated and taken to saint. the trails of flames leading through wooded areas, as well. officials say the strong wind gusts of up to 70mph have knocked down trees and power lines, as well, but also causing those flames to spread very quickly. roadways out of the area packed as immediate evacuations were declared overnight. some area towns like pigeon forge and sevierville also being evacuated as a result of those quickly moving flames. crews are working around the clock trying to contain that fire. the other big breaking story is a plane that crashed down in colombia with a brazilian soccer team on board. the plane was on its way to med own international airport in colombia. it left bolivia around 6:00. 72 passengers and nine crew

officials just confirmed that five people managed to survive that crash. the other 76 people on board tragically killed when that plane went down. those survivors are now being treated at area hospitals. still not clear yet what caused that plane to go down, but officials say weather may have been a factor. the charter plane was carrying members of a brazilian soccer team. the team released a brief statement saying it was still evaluating the extent of this crash. the team was scheduled to play tomorrow for the first leg of the south american cup finals. that game has been breaking stories throughout the morning right here on 7news "today in new england." back to you, guys. >> also on 7... >> i saw the car ran into him an plowed into him. i was standing outside. >> christa: this morning police are searching for answers after just a terrifying attack on the campus of ohio state. 11 people were rushed to the hospital after a driver jumped the curb, got out of his car and

police are trying to find the motive, and they say there could be links to terror. let's go 207's john cuoco with more for us. john? >> john: christa, the ohio state campus will reopen today less than 24 hours after an attack that rocked the campus in columbus. >> we have several pedestrians struck by a vehicle. >> john: the attack at ohio state started just before 10:00 a.m. monday. students and faculty blocked doorway and hid. >> we barricaded ourselves in our rooms like we were taught, turned off our hunkered down. >> john: officials say the suspect, 18-year-old abdul artan was somali citizen who lived in the area and was a legal, permanent resident. police and federal agents searching the apartment where they say artan lived. investigators say they can't rule out terror at this point. >> we have to consider that it is that possibility. >> john: law enforcement officials say shortly before the attack, this rant was posted to what appears to be artan's facebook page, saying the

i can't take it anymore." police say artan deliberately dove over the curb, rammed the car into a group of pedestrians. he then continued to attack. >> the suspect came out of a car with a knife and started swinging at students. >> john: the only gun was fired by a responding police officer. 28-year-old alan harushko. >> the officer was in the right plates at the right time. he saw the whole thing happen and was able to action. >> john: campus police are confident the suspect came to the campus himself. now they're investigating if anyone else helped him plan the attack. live in the newsroom, john cuoco, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: john, thank you. an elderly tewksbury man is being treated for severe burns after getting trapped in a fire. the flames breaking out at the man's home on south rhoda street. neighbors tore the burning clothes off the 84-year-old man's body. >> well, his shirt was off.

his chest and back was on fire pretty bad. we tore it off his chest and off his back and he was still smoldering. >> christa: the man was taken by helicopter the mass general. his daughter was also rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation. she's expected to recover. >> sarah: police searching for suspects after a little girl's death is ruled a homicide in berlin, new hampshire. the chief medical examiner says that two-year-old died of blunt force trauma. officers found the child unresponsive inside her york street home sunday afternoon. ipswich police arrest man in connection with a home invasion that. happened on high street yesterday afternoon. investigators say the 32-year-old suspect broke into a man's home and hit the homeowner with a club. that man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. >> christa: and now to the latest in the president-elect's transition. donald trump today is expected to be a benchmark day. vice president-elect mike pence telling the media to expect some major announcements today.

and human services. price has been a vocal president of the president's affordable care act. also the president-elect will be meeting with mitt romney again today for the second time. the former bay state governor is a contender for the secretary of state position. this comes as the president-elect's team is reportedly trying to keep romney out of the cabinet after romney's sharp criticism of the president-elect on the campaign trail. and students at harvard's kennedy school say they plan to protest the arrival ofem this week. the "globe" is reporting that campaign manager kellyanne conway and chief strategist steve bannon will be attending a conference on the school's campus. also jill stein asking for a recount in another battleground state this morning. the former green party candidate has filed for a recount now in pennsylvania. this comes after wisconsin says it will also begin a recount of votes later on this week. >> nicole: governor charlie baker reaching out to the president-elect. governor baker says he called president-elect trump before

holiday and the congratulate him on his win. baker says he doesn't think president-elect trump will punish massachusetts for voting democratic in the. election. >> it was a social call. i mean, i did think it was important for me to reach out and to say congratulations and to offer our assistance if appropriate. >> nicole: during the campaign, the governor frequently spoke out against the president-elect, openly admitting that he did not vote with his and massachusetts setting a new record for voter turnout, more than 3.4 million people hit the polls on election day. according to the strait, about 30% of voters voted early in the state's first-ever early voting period. >> christa: people in cuba can't to mourn the death of their long-time leader, fidel castro. in fact, thousands lined up in revolutionary square in havana yesterday to pay tribute. today castro's actions --

>> nicole: we're following breaking news. we start with republican. police on the seaboard of a shooting that's shutting down part of the lynnway. right now the road is shut down between shepard and commercial streets for that investigation. we have a crouton bay to the scene. we'll give you the latest information as soon as it becomes available. >> christa: police are investigating a deadly drive on the mcclellan highway in east boston. a driver was killed when he rolled over his car on route 1. it happened late last night.

scene. back open now. no word yet on the cause of the crash. >> now 7weather. ism we have a wet stretch of weather ahead. we're kicking it off with slick weather. a freezing rain advisory in effect until 10:00 a.m. you can see that especially in north central massachusetts, western massachusetts, those higher elevations seeing some rain freeze on contact with the ground, which definitely could cause for some slick roadways. you can see we're already especially again in north central massachusetts, worcester county seeing that push in here right now and that's going to be seen in leominster as well as fitchburg here this morning. as we head into the rest of your morning, here's what we're looking at big picture-wise. low pressure camped out in the upper midwest. it's taking its time moving forward, but this ban of precipitation out ahead of it in association with this warm front is moving pretty quickly. we're already seeing a lot of that moisture push into southern new england. still a lot of that actually back into pennsylvania.

work its way into our neck of the woods, and it's going to bring a lot of moisture headed our way. temperature-wise, we'll stay about average if not above average today. starting things out warm here in boston at 38 degrees. most of us in the low 30s. we head enter the rest of the day. we'll see a lot of 50-degree weather. temperatures warming up even into the evening hours in association with that warm front. more on that in a second. a look ahead. this morning we'll generally see precipitation move in from the west and into eastern massachusetts. starting out with light rain and talking more rain showers. the more you see those oranges as well as yellows, that's where we'll see heavier rain. this is especially the case south of the mass pike. you can see as we head home from work today, that's when we're looking at probably the most difficult commute here for the day as we do have potential for more moderate to heavy rainfall. this pushes through by late tonight. we start to dry out. we keep things dry briefly into wednesday morning. as we head into wednesday afternoon, we get a second round of rainfall. that continues into wednesday

lot of us are looking laughter an inch of rain up to an inch of rain. these are just estimates. where exactly that will fall will vary, but we're all looking at a good deal of moisture headed our way. by thursday morning after this second system pulls through, a lot of us will have one to two inches of rain. lockley three inches definitely possible for us. highs today in the mid-50s. again, that's going to be closer to 7 or 8:00. so not our typical time of the day where we see our high temperatures. but with we're going to be warm, breezier than yesterday, and areas of fog upper 40s for most of us, and that rain ending briefly. we're looking at that second round of rain by tomorrow, and that continues into thursday morning. >> also on 7... >> hey, baby, donald trump is your president, every [bleeped] one of you. if you don't like it, too bad. >> nicole: well, a vocal support of president-elect donald trump going over the top before taking off. and that rant has him grounded for life on one airline.

saying that he will never again board one of their flights. let's go to 7's kris anderson with the latest. >> kris: good morning. this ban comes after delta faced harsh criticism for allowing this passenger to stay on board that flight after his rant. >> donald trump, baby! that's right. this man knows what's up. >> kris: a passenger on board a delta flight recorded a donald trump supporter spewing profanity and yelling about the president-elect. >> he gets up in the aisle and justta how many people, man? really? ain't nobody going to say something? >> we can't hear you. >> you can't hear me? donald trump, baby. >> kris: and insulting hillary clinton supporters. >> we got some hillary clinton supporters here? come on, baby. >> kris: delta says the man is banned for life from the airline, but some passengers don't think that's enough. he went off the plane for 15 minutes, delaying our flight,

patriot, loudly for the whole place to hear. that passenger says she's gotten hateful messages for posting the video online. she also says delta has not reached out the her. >> hey, baby, donald trump, is your president, every [bleeped] one of you. if you don't like it, too bad. >> kris: a bit of an update. delta says it is offering full refunds to all of the other passengers who were on board that flight. back to you. >> christa: all right, kris. thank you. a woman meantime making an she jumps out of the emergency exit just after the plane landed yesterday afternoon. the woman then ran away on the tarmac, but officers eventually caught up with her and took her into custody. one way to do it when you're impatient. >> nicole: i guess. i think they said she had a medical condition. i don't know what happened, but i think there is another way to get off the plane. >> another story. there remember the employee who

i can talk about how cold it is outside while being inside. >> christa: you know, welcome to the warmth. it's amazing. it is a nice day to take a break from being outside, because it could get slippery in some areas and rainy in others. >> nicole: especially west of the 495 look. >> wren: we're currently looking at a freezing rain advisory. currently under this freezing rain. that wraps up at 10:00, but it just takes trace amounts of rain to see these slipp ground. you can see temperatures below freezing in orange, 30 degrees in bedford, much warm anywhere boston than the upper 30s, but again, if you are headed further west, i'd watch out for some slippery spots. you can see we have some showers and freezing rain and a closer look at who is seeing this in northern worcester county while leominster will see some of this. currently seeing that. we'll continue to see this here this morning, but this is already going back and forth between rain and freezing rain, and we are eventually going to get to all rain showers here

>> we go no answers from these people here, okay. my child is not safe here. no one's child is safe here. >> nicole: parents fired up over the handling of allegations of lewd behavior on an elementary school bus. parents got first chance to talk to the parents about the incident. there were plenty of opinions afterward. kris anderson is back with more. >> wren: nicole, a lot of upset parents. >> kris: many of them demanding answers after they voiced their molested other children on a school bus. >> if it wasn't for my post, none of these parents would know anything. >> kris: this woman took to facebook last week to expose what she says was getting swept under the rug, claiming that a six-year-old boy sexually molested her friend's son and several others while on the school bus to renaissance charter public school. monday night the school held a meeting to answer questions. but that alleged victim's mom, who asked not to show her face, says they are still in the dark.

answers. it seemed like the school was protecting the child, which i understand, but i didn't feel like there was any protection for my child. >> kris: many people agreed, saying parents were arguing and some even walked out. >> we go no answers from these people here. my child is not safe here. no one's child is safe here. >> they need to let these parents know what's going on with this kid, what they're going to do moving forward. the parents want to know, why wasn't we notified. >> kris: school officials say due the privacy issues, the six-year-old suspect's status and they have taken steps to safeguard all other students. >> just because we can't get the information the second we want it doesn't mean things aren't being handled. >> kris: but for the mom with the child allegedly hurt in this understand debt, it's still not enough. >> i am disappointed. i feel like my child was left behind. >> kris: school officials say they have added a monitor to that bus where the alleged incident happened. back to you. >> nicole: and a day care in lee, new hampshire, is closed

to be there was found all alone on a busy highway ramp. witnesses found the three-year-old walking up the route 4 ramp. it was just several hundred feet from the day care. the incident happened earlier this month. the child fortunately wasn't hurt. hits angels learning academy is an at-home day care located on joe ford road. police are still investigating. >> christa: this morning we're learning new details about the new hampshire mom caught on camera passed out from a drug overdose. the video of mandy mcgowan passed out i store back in september went viral. and you can see mcgowan's young child trying to wake her up. so on monday the 36-year-old was arraigned on child endanger. charges. mcgowan's attorney says that his client is now clean and is currently in a treatment facility. >> nicole: an alleged church thief called to court in boston. prosecutors say 33-year-old eric swanson broke into the shrine of st. anthony friday morning and stole several religious items. surveillance video captured the incident. police say they arrested swanson

attractions there. right now officials say at least 30 buildings have caught fire, including a popular hotel. dangerous scene unfolding right near the great smokey mountains national park. we have video now from inside of the park view inn. the hotel sits right on the edge of dolly parton's theme park dollywood. you see flames and fire outside of the window roaring by. shortly after this video was taken everyone inside was evacuated to get them to a safer place. also breaking this morning, a plane crashing in colombia, leaving more than 70 people dead. medellin international airport in colombia. it had left bolivia last night around 6:00. five people managed to survive this crash. the charter plane was carrying members of the brazilian soccer team or a brazilian soccer team. the team released a brief statement saying it was still evaluating the extent of the crash. the team was scheduled to play tomorrow in medellin for the first leg of the south american cup finals. that game has been canceled as a result of this tragic crash. we'll have more on both of these

families want the grieve now. >> christa: the victim is from honduras and leaves behind a wife and three children. >> nicole: a woman is flown to the hospital after being hit by a car in westwood yesterday afternoon on weatherbee drive. police say the woman in her 90s was walking when a driver lost control and hit her. investigators say the driver of that car is also elderly and a medical issue may have caused the crash. a swampscott man accused of causing a deadly accident in east boston facing a judge on monday. prosecutors say steveing berman's blood-alcohol level was two times the legal limit when he hit an airport shuttle back in august. two passengers inside were killed. police say berman told a witness at the scene that another car hit his and then pushed him into the shuttle, but prosecutors say that's just not true. ands be officials are trying to ban plastic bags. the city con sill proposed a ban on monday that would not allow plastic bags at grocery stores. the lawmaker says the bags are harmful to the environment.

police officer-involved shooting. all of this started with an armed robbery at a gas station just a few boston celtics away away -- a few blocks away from here. the lynn police officer opened fire shooting that suspect. that suspect was rushed to the hospital where he's undergoing surgery this morning. no police officers were hurt in any of this. now they've got a very large crime scene spa spans several blocks. they have the lynnway in both directions shut down, those most of their investigation is of the lynnway. so they're going to be out here for quite some time trying to piece all of this together. but again, we've got one suspect who was shot, rushed to mass general hospital, where he is in police custody undergoing surgery and in police officers were hurt. live this morning in lynn, victoria warren, 7news "today in new england." >> kris: time now for fast track traffic. danielle, that shooting scene, the big crime scene, is it affecting things in lynn?

saying. sky7 also over the scene, kris. northbound and southbound the lynnway closed in boat directions. let's go to the maps. this is between shepherd street and dmerrial street here. it's been closed pretty much all morning. no word yet on when that is expected to reopen. also north of town on 95 northbound at central street, we have another accident we're watching. south of town the expressway braintree to boston half an hour. so stop and go the whole way there. route 3 a little bit of slow and go traffic back the weymouth. back the brockton. and 95 slowing down northbound there as you approach 128. the pike slowing down a little bit through framingham. but other than that, not really seeing any major issues on the pike this morning. take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. 20, 25 minutes on the expressway, braintree to boston. 14 minutes into town on the pike from 128. so that's your shortest drive this morning. 93 southbound, 128 to the zakim bridge 24 minutes. and both the "t" and commuter rail running on schedule. back to you, guys.

colombia with a brazilian soccer team on board. the plane was on its way to medellin international airport in colombia. it had left bolivia around 6:00 last night. officials say 76 people on board were all killed. five people did manage to survive that crash. they're being treated at area hospitals right now. it's not clear yet what caused the plane the go down, but officials are investigating a possible electrical problem right now. also breaking, severe wildfires tearing through tennessee's ski resort areas that surround the park. most of those towns are under mandatory evacuation, including the town of gatlinburg. 30 buildings in that town have already gone up in flames. fire continues to spread even at this hour. and this morning parents at as be charter school speaking out after allegations of sexual abuse on board a school bus. officials at the boston renaissance school holding a meeting last night. they expressed their frustration and outrage after a facebook post accused a six-year-old boy

now. >> victoria: good morning, christa. we can tell you that in lynn police officers were hurt in all of this, but one lynn police officer did open fire, shooting a suspect. a very large crime scene you're looking at live right here behind me. this is on the lynnway in the area of commercial street. this shooting happened around 4:00 a.m. we're told that it started as an armed robbery and then there was some sort of situation out on the sidewalk, and that's when this police officer opened fire. the suspect was rushed to mass ge undergoing surgery this morning. we have video of the gas station involved in this incident. it's a gulf station on the corner of commercial street and the lynnway. police officers are there right now doing that portion of the investigation. so a lot of things they're trying to piece together this morning, live out here on the scene, they've been marking things with evidence markers and just trying to follow the trail from the gas station down to the actual shooting location. again, that suspect in police

of the windows. there shortly after this video was taken, everyone inside was forced to evacuate. the trails of flames leading through wooded area, adding to the danger, strong wind gusts of up to 70mph. that's knocked down trees and power lines. that's causing the flames to spread even faster. roads out of the affected area are packed as immediate evacuations were ordered overnight. in addition to gatlinburg, some areas of the town of pigeon forge are also being evacuated. crews are working around the clock to flames, and that may actually start the get easier because rain has just moved into the area. and also breaking this morning, a plane crashes in colombia with a brazilian soccer team on board. the plane was on its way to medellin international airport in colombia. it had left bolivia around 6:00 last night. there were 72 massers with and nine crew members on board. officials did confirm that five people somehow managed to survive that crash. the other 76 people on board were killed.

into possible ties to terror. we want to get over live to 7's john cuoco who has been following this story. what's the latest, john? >> john: kris, the ohio state campus is open this morning, but ten people are recovering following the terrifying attack on monday. police say 18-year-old abdu razak ali artan drove his car on to a sidewalk and into a group of pedestrians. he then used a butcher knife to stab several students according to officers. ten people were taken to the hospital. an o.s.u. police officer shot and killed artan when he refused to drop his knife. artan was a somali citizen who moved to the u.s. in 2013 as a legal resident. the motive for the attack remains unknown. university police officers are now investigating to see if anyone else helped plan the attack. live in the newsroom, john cuoco, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: this morning an elderly tewksbury man is being treated for severe burns after he was trapped in a fire. the flames broke our last night
