morning. take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. ten minutes braintree to boston northbound on on the expressway. 12 minutes into town on the pike from 128. 93 southbound, 128 to the zakim bridge, just 11 minute. the "t" and commuter rail starting the morning on schedule. back to you, guys. >> christa: we're following two big breaking stories this morning. a plane carrying a brazilian soccer team has crashed in colombia. >> nicole: also an out-of-control wildfire is tearing through a resort town in tennessee putting lives in 7's kris anderson is following breaking details. >> kris: nicole, christa, a couple big stories here, and scary scene unfolding in the town of gaithersburg, tennessee, right now. it's a resort town, very popular place. flames tearing through this tourist location known for its skiing and all sorts of resort-type activities. right now officials say at least 30 buildings have caught fire, including a popular hotel there. the dangerous scene unfolding near the great smokey mountains

of dolly parton's theme park dollywood in sevierville, which is close by. everyone inside was evacuated and taken to saint. the trails of flames leading through wooded areas, as well. officials say the strong wind gusts of up to 70mph have knocked down trees and power lines, as well, but also causing those flames to spread very quickly. roadways out of the area packed as immediate evacuations were declared overnight. some area towns like pigeon forge and sevierville also being evacuated as a result of those quickly moving flames. crews are working around the clock trying to contain that fire. the other big breaking story is a plane that crashed down in colombia with a brazilian soccer team on board. the plane was on its way to med own international airport in colombia. it left bolivia around 6:00. 72 passengers and nine crew

officials just confirmed that five people managed to survive that crash. the other 76 people on board tragically killed when that plane went down. those survivors are now being treated at area hospitals. still not clear yet what caused that plane to go down, but officials say weather may have been a factor. the charter plane was carrying members of a brazilian soccer team. the team released a brief statement saying it was still evaluating the extent of this crash. the team was scheduled to play tomorrow for the first leg of the south american cup finals. that game has been breaking stories throughout the morning right here on 7news "today in new england." back to you, guys. >> also on 7... >> i saw the car ran into him an plowed into him. i was standing outside. >> christa: this morning police are searching for answers after just a terrifying attack on the campus of ohio state. 11 people were rushed to the hospital after a driver jumped the curb, got out of his car and

police are trying to find the motive, and they say there could be links to terror. let's go 207's john cuoco with more for us. john? >> john: christa, the ohio state campus will reopen today less than 24 hours after an attack that rocked the campus in columbus. >> we have several pedestrians struck by a vehicle. >> john: the attack at ohio state started just before 10:00 a.m. monday. students and faculty blocked doorway and hid. >> we barricaded ourselves in our rooms like we were taught, turned off our hunkered down. >> john: officials say the suspect, 18-year-old abdul artan was somali citizen who lived in the area and was a legal, permanent resident. police and federal agents searching the apartment where they say artan lived. investigators say they can't rule out terror at this point. >> we have to consider that it is that possibility. >> john: law enforcement officials say shortly before the attack, this rant was posted to what appears to be artan's facebook page, saying the

his chest and back was on fire pretty bad. we tore it off his chest and off his back and he was still smoldering. >> christa: the man was taken by helicopter the mass general. his daughter was also rushed to the hospital for smoke inhalation. she's expected to recover. >> sarah: police searching for suspects after a little girl's death is ruled a homicide in berlin, new hampshire. the chief medical examiner says that two-year-old died of blunt force trauma. officers found the child unresponsive inside her york street home sunday afternoon. ipswich police arrest man in connection with a home invasion that. happened on high street yesterday afternoon. investigators say the 32-year-old suspect broke into a man's home and hit the homeowner with a club. that man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. >> christa: and now to the latest in the president-elect's transition. donald trump today is expected to be a benchmark day. vice president-elect mike pence telling the media to expect some major announcements today.

scene. back open now. no word yet on the cause of the crash. >> now 7weather. ism we have a wet stretch of weather ahead. we're kicking it off with slick weather. a freezing rain advisory in effect until 10:00 a.m. you can see that especially in north central massachusetts, western massachusetts, those higher elevations seeing some rain freeze on contact with the ground, which definitely could cause for some slick roadways. you can see we're already especially again in north central massachusetts, worcester county seeing that push in here right now and that's going to be seen in leominster as well as fitchburg here this morning. as we head into the rest of your morning, here's what we're looking at big picture-wise. low pressure camped out in the upper midwest. it's taking its time moving forward, but this ban of precipitation out ahead of it in association with this warm front is moving pretty quickly. we're already seeing a lot of that moisture push into southern new england. still a lot of that actually back into pennsylvania.

work its way into our neck of the woods, and it's going to bring a lot of moisture headed our way. temperature-wise, we'll stay about average if not above average today. starting things out warm here in boston at 38 degrees. most of us in the low 30s. we head enter the rest of the day. we'll see a lot of 50-degree weather. temperatures warming up even into the evening hours in association with that warm front. more on that in a second. a look ahead. this morning we'll generally see precipitation move in from the west and into eastern massachusetts. starting out with light rain and talking more rain showers. the more you see those oranges as well as yellows, that's where we'll see heavier rain. this is especially the case south of the mass pike. you can see as we head home from work today, that's when we're looking at probably the most difficult commute here for the day as we do have potential for more moderate to heavy rainfall. this pushes through by late tonight. we start to dry out. we keep things dry briefly into wednesday morning. as we head into wednesday afternoon, we get a second round of rainfall. that continues into wednesday

lot of us are looking laughter an inch of rain up to an inch of rain. these are just estimates. where exactly that will fall will vary, but we're all looking at a good deal of moisture headed our way. by thursday morning after this second system pulls through, a lot of us will have one to two inches of rain. lockley three inches definitely possible for us. highs today in the mid-50s. again, that's going to be closer to 7 or 8:00. so not our typical time of the day where we see our high temperatures. but with we're going to be warm, breezier than yesterday, and areas of fog upper 40s for most of us, and that rain ending briefly. we're looking at that second round of rain by tomorrow, and that continues into thursday morning. >> also on 7... >> hey, baby, donald trump is your president, every [bleeped] one of you. if you don't like it, too bad. >> nicole: well, a vocal support of president-elect donald trump going over the top before taking off. and that rant has him grounded for life on one airline.

attractions there. right now officials say at least 30 buildings have caught fire, including a popular hotel. dangerous scene unfolding right near the great smokey mountains national park. we have video now from inside of the park view inn. the hotel sits right on the edge of dolly parton's theme park dollywood. you see flames and fire outside of the window roaring by. shortly after this video was taken everyone inside was evacuated to get them to a safer place. also breaking this morning, a plane crashing in colombia, leaving more than 70 people dead. medellin international airport in colombia. it had left bolivia last night around 6:00. five people managed to survive this crash. the charter plane was carrying members of the brazilian soccer team or a brazilian soccer team. the team released a brief statement saying it was still evaluating the extent of the crash. the team was scheduled to play tomorrow in medellin for the first leg of the south american cup finals. that game has been canceled as a result of this tragic crash. we'll have more on both of these

the morning right here on 7news "today in new england." back to you. >> nicole: and breaking overnight, police are investigating a deadly drive on the mcclellan highway in east boston. investigators say a driver was killed when his car rolled over on route 1a late last night. crews had to shut down the road for several hours to clear the scene. >> christa: and brockton police are questioning a driver who allegedly took off after running down a man who was crossing the street. investigators say the driver turned himself in yesterday morning after what you're looking at here is a surveillance image that shows the scene outside of the spot nightclub where it happened. police figured out the man who was driving the jaguar was not the owner of that vehicle, and now the owner of the nightclub says he's making some changes after this happened. >> what we're going to be doing, as well as doing our security duty, we're going to be doing some sort of crossing guard duties with flashlights. >> it's terrible, especially this time of year to have something like that happen to

families want the grieve now. >> christa: the victim is from honduras and leaves behind a wife and three children. >> nicole: a woman is flown to the hospital after being hit by a car in westwood yesterday afternoon on weatherbee drive. police say the woman in her 90s was walking when a driver lost control and hit her. investigators say the driver of that car is also elderly and a medical issue may have caused the crash. a swampscott man accused of causing a deadly accident in east boston facing a judge on monday. prosecutors say steveing berman's blood-alcohol level was two times the legal limit when he hit an airport shuttle back in august. two passengers inside were killed. police say berman told a witness at the scene that another car hit his and then pushed him into the shuttle, but prosecutors say that's just not true. ands be officials are trying to ban plastic bags. the city con sill proposed a ban on monday that would not allow plastic bags at grocery stores. the lawmaker says the bags are harmful to the environment.

fee on paper bags. and ashland banning marijuana shops for now. people there voting at monday's town meeting to put a ban on accepting applications for marijuana shop licenses until zoning regulations are figured out or until january 2018 when it's allowed. and this decision gives the town more than a year to design and approve zoning regulations before businesses can comply with them. town leaders say this decision is about local control decision making. >> christa: protest centers westport fighting against what is being called the largest case of animal abuse in the northeast. protesters gathered at the town's board of health meeting monday night to call for the resignation of several board members. they say those board members did not properly inspect the american legion highway farm where more than 1,000 animals were found living in horrendous conditions. >> you're responsible for the tragedies that happened. >> you allowed this to go on and

park view inn. if hotel sits on the edge of dolly parton's theme park dollywood. you can see the flames just outside the windows there. shortly after this video was taken, everyone inside was evacuated to safety. and the trails of flames leading through the wooded areas, officials say the strong wind gusts of up to 70mph have knocked down trees and purr lines, causing flames to spread quickly. and roadways are out of the area are packed as immediate evacuations were overnight. in addition to gatlinburg, some areas of the town of pigeon forge are also being evacuated. crews are working around the clock the try and contain those flames. we have more breaking news this morning. a plane crash in colombia with a brazilian soccer team on board. that plane was on its way to medellin international airport in colombia. it had left bolivia at 6:00 last night. there were 72 passengers and 9 crew members on board. officials, though, just confirmed that five people mao

commercial street. this was, we're told by the police chief, a police officer-involved shooting. no lynn police officers were hurten one suspect, though, was shot. that suspect survived the shooting and has been rushed to mass general hospital where he is in police custody and undergoing surgery right now. but as you can imagine, this is just a huge police presence out here, and they've got quite a bit of investigation that needs to happen any time a police officer fireshe for quite some time, which means the lynnway is going to be shut down throughout a portion of the morning rush. that's something that a commuter will want to keep in mind. but again, we have confirmed this was a police officer-involved shooting. no lynn police officers were hurt. one suspect was shot. that suspect currently undergoing surgery at mass general hospital. live this morning in lynn, victoria warren, 7news "today in new england."

ipswich arrest manning in connection with a home invasion there. this happened on high street yesterday afternoon. investigators say the 32-year-old suspect broke into a man's home and then hit the home owner with a club. the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. police in brockton are questioning a driver who allegedly took off after running down a man who was simply crossing the street. investigators say the suspect turned himself in yesterday morning shortly after 25-year-old sergio licona died at the hospital. this is that showed what happened outside the spot nightclub. police say the man driving the jaguar was not the owner of that vehicle. no word yet on charges he'll be facing. >> kris: the latest in president-elect donald trump's transition. today is expected to be a benchmark day. vice president-elect mike pence telling the media to expect announcements today, including dpa dwa representative tom priorities chork is expected to be named secretary of health and human services. he's been a critic of obamacare.

police officer-involved shooting. all of this started with an armed robbery at a gas station just a few boston celtics away away -- a few blocks away from here. the lynn police officer opened fire shooting that suspect. that suspect was rushed to the hospital where he's undergoing surgery this morning. no police officers were hurt in any of this. now they've got a very large crime scene spa spans several blocks. they have the lynnway in both directions shut down, those most of their investigation is of the lynnway. so they're going to be out here for quite some time trying to piece all of this together. but again, we've got one suspect who was shot, rushed to mass general hospital, where he is in police custody undergoing surgery and in police officers were hurt. live this morning in lynn, victoria warren, 7news "today in new england." >> kris: time now for fast track traffic. danielle, that shooting scene, the big crime scene, is it affecting things in lynn?

colombia with a brazilian soccer team on board. the plane was on its way to medellin international airport in colombia. it had left bolivia around 6:00 last night. officials say 76 people on board were all killed. five people did manage to survive that crash. they're being treated at area hospitals right now. it's not clear yet what caused the plane the go down, but officials are investigating a possible electrical problem right now. also breaking, severe wildfires tearing through tennessee's ski resort areas that surround the park. most of those towns are under mandatory evacuation, including the town of gatlinburg. 30 buildings in that town have already gone up in flames. fire continues to spread even at this hour. and this morning parents at as be charter school speaking out after allegations of sexual abuse on board a school bus. officials at the boston renaissance school holding a meeting last night. they expressed their frustration and outrage after a facebook post accused a six-year-old boy

of the windows. there shortly after this video was taken, everyone inside was forced to evacuate. the trails of flames leading through wooded area, adding to the danger, strong wind gusts of up to 70mph. that's knocked down trees and power lines. that's causing the flames to spread even faster. roads out of the affected area are packed as immediate evacuations were ordered overnight. in addition to gatlinburg, some areas of the town of pigeon forge are also being evacuated. crews are working around the clock to flames, and that may actually start the get easier because rain has just moved into the area. and also breaking this morning, a plane crashes in colombia with a brazilian soccer team on board. the plane was on its way to medellin international airport in colombia. it had left bolivia around 6:00 last night. there were 72 massers with and nine crew members on board. officials did confirm that five people somehow managed to survive that crash. the other 76 people on board were killed.

into possible ties to terror. we want to get over live to 7's john cuoco who has been following this story. what's the latest, john? >> john: kris, the ohio state campus is open this morning, but ten people are recovering following the terrifying attack on monday. police say 18-year-old abdu razak ali artan drove his car on to a sidewalk and into a group of pedestrians. he then used a butcher knife to stab several students according to officers. ten people were taken to the hospital. an o.s.u. police officer shot and killed artan when he refused to drop his knife. artan was a somali citizen who moved to the u.s. in 2013 as a legal resident. the motive for the attack remains unknown. university police officers are now investigating to see if anyone else helped plan the attack. live in the newsroom, john cuoco, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: this morning an elderly tewksbury man is being treated for severe burns after he was trapped in a fire. the flames broke our last night
