breaking news now. a plymouth county sheriff's deputy rushed to the hospital after a cruiser crash. it happened in rockland. another driver and a police dog were also hurt. >> nancy: dan hausle is live at the scene with the very latest. dan? >> reporter: well, we are on beech street. you can see the two vehicles involved behind me. you've got the police cruiser: and you've got a silver sedan there that is smashed up as well. you can see some of the investigators on the scene. let's show you some tape earlier.

different. because this is the scene we had here with the cruiser mashed up on the side. we are told that the cruiser had turned on its lights and sirens and was going along. a couple of cars had pulled over. then the silver sedan may have turned and pulled in front of the cruiser and been hit broadside. it is driver of the vehicle and the sheriff's department investigator were both taken to the hospital. sources tell me that the investigator was up and walking around and the person in the other vehicle may h we understand there was also a police dog in the police cruiser as well taken for some treatment. the investigator collided with a civilian car here. there are a couple of injuries. we are looking to see more indication of just how serious the injuries are. that is what you have here in rockland right now.

>> kris: some more breaking news this noon. a chaotic morning in chinatown. take a look at this video here. crews are on the scene of several man hole fires earlier. the heavy smoke pouring right out of the man holes. and into nearby buildings. fire officials say this could have been triggered by a water main break from earlier this morning. you see the firefighters waiting... wading through the knee-deep water. this was the scene with the two streets flooded. the incidents shutting down busy roadways. >> reporter: off the top, there were no injuries despite everything that has happened here this morning. take a look behind us here. you can see the area where those man holes caught on fire. again, several of them caught on fire. we do now believe that this is all connected to a massive water main break earlier. >> yeah. a firefighter hit the door. we just left.

pouring from man hole covers here in chinatown this morning. sending boston firefighters scrambling to the scene. at the same time, buildings like the boston youth building have been evacuated. >> i come from new zealand. it's been a long journally: i just got here yesterday. on the red-eye flight. i'm being told to get out. >> reporter: the massive water main break just after 5:00 this morning. sending thousands of gallons of water cascading down the street. holes which shorted out several electrical lines underground. >> a bit confusing, i guess. it would be nice if someone actually told everyone what's going on. >> reporter: through the morning, crews worked to douse the flames and deal with water in the basements of several buildings and also fix the water main itself. >> boston, out of all the major municipalities, actually, has a very low rate of water main breaks.

renovating, rehabilitating, replacing mains. >> reporter: the boston youth building we mentioned so, many people were evacuated. again, there is still a lot of water in the basement of several of these businesses and buildings here. the other problem is, as you mentioned, the traffic issue. it is not raining right now. it is expected to rain this afternoon. a lot of rain. as you look at the area now, you can see it is all sealed off right now. the boston fire commissioner joe finn remains on the scene right now. the boston police commissioner was here as well. william evans. again, this whole area remains sealed off right now. a big mess. there is a lot of cleaning up to do. the other concern here is for carbon monoxide levels in some of the buildings here. so firefighters were literally going building to building with gauges and meters to check on those levels. just to make sure everything is safe. but a fluid situation right

it is continuing. this area remains sealed off. boston police are asking motorists to try to steer clear of the area if possible. we are live this afternoon in chinatown, steve cooper, 7 news. >> anchor: the dighton fire chief accused of using town money to buy women's clothing. he was suspended without pay. >> reporter: and nicole, according to court documents, these purchases totaled $239. they have landed the chief in the town's board of selectmen held a meeting, trying to decide what action to take. as you mentioned, they decided to suspend the fire chief without pay right now. according to court documents, this came to light when a town accountant told a state police detective it looked like the word "women's" had been whited out and the word "men's" written over it.

detectives suspected the chief bought the items for a girlfriend. the dighton's board of selectmen says the chief has broken their trust. >> he has offended not only this board but the taxpayers thofer town. whether it be $235 or $235,000. >> reporter: he than fire chief for 11 years in the town. he was not here for the meeting at town hall today. again, he has been suspended without pay. he faces a criminal investigation also as well, though. charges of larceny under $250 and also violating public employee standards of conduct. the board of selectmen says they will now be doing a full audit of the fire department's

eagan, 7 news. >> anchor: no charges will be brought against a north carolina officer who shot and killed a black man at an apartment complex in september. the victim's family claimed he was not carrying a weapon. but today the district attorney said evidence showed otherwise. the d.a. said the officer's actions in killing keith lamont scott were justified. the shooting led to two nights of violent protests, including a fatal shooting the next night in downtown charlotte. >> kris: also on 7. the forecast. we are tracking more wet weather moving into the area today. >> anchor: it definitely could affect the evening commute. right, wren? >> reporter: even lunch. we are already seeing the rain. you can see this is just kind of bleeding out further into southern new england. and that trend will continue for us. where you see this darker orange, yellow, red, that has

heavy rainfall to some locations. actually, shirley, massachusetts, seeing an inch of rain already this morning. so we do have a lot of rain headed our way. yesterday, these rainfall totals stayed especially farther south of the mass. pike. by tomorrow morning, up to an inch and an inch and a half. we have a lot of moisture headed our way. you can see light rain on the southern edge of this band. billerica as well as leominster already seeing some moderate rainfall. otherwise, temperatures are quite varied for us. mid-40's in jaffrey. mid-50's in new bedford. >> anchor: severe storms in the south killing at least five people and destroying everything in their path. two people in tennessee and three in alabama. >> kris: heartbreaking. sarah french has more. >> sarah: devastation in alabama. >> i heard a real loud crack right outside my window. at the same time, i looked up. i saw lightning strike.

i didn't know how close. i knew it was real close. >> sarah: a mother anson pinned underneath their three-bedroom trailer. that man wholing up a wall to keep it from falling on his 98-year-old mother. >> it was kind of chaotic. we had a lot of community members up here trying to dig them out. and help them out. >> reporter: more than a dozen buildings were destroyed. including a church and a shopping plaza. the tornado affectedden area of homes and businesses that covered nearly half a mile. communities now coming together to survey the damage. >> everybody is just pulling together. team efforts. people out here. trying to help their neighbors. hs they don't even know them. and trying to work with them. >> sarah: the storms are expected to move southeast today. authorities are still going door-to-door looking for any other victims. in the newsroom, i'm sarah french, 7 news. >> anchor: police searching for a driver involved in a serious hit-and-run in

9:00 last night. police say the driver hit a man with a pick-up truck and dragged him for two blocks before taking off. that victim is in serious condition. >> kris: a police-involved shooting in lynn. we are learning some more information about the suspect. police shot and killed the suspect early tuesday morning. that incident started yesterday as a robbery and ended with those shots fired. shots fired. >> reporter: police opening fire in lynn, shooting and killing a man suspected in a violent robbery at a gas station. >> the individual had his hands in his pockets. the officers wanted him to show his hands. he refused to do so. he continued to come at the officers. they moved back. eventually one of the officers fired his weapon. >> reporter: michael mcguinness died at the hospital. he just got out of prison and has a long history of

listens video went viral, showing a 75-year-old woman trying to jump in to help a clerk as police say mcguinness jumped behind the counter, strong-arming him to hand over the money. early tuesday in lynn, police say he was at it again, struggling with the clerk at this gas station and making offer with $150. >> the individual went in there, claimed he was armed with a firearm. attempted to rob the store. violent struggle ensued with the clerk of the store. >> reporter: now they are investigating all the events. >> anchor: more news today: forecast the death toll is now at four in those devastating wildfires in tennessee. this afternoon, we are getting a look at the damage. take a look right there. the flames burned nearly 15,000 acres of land in the smoky mountains. more than 250 buildings in the ski resort towns of pigeon forge and gatlinburg were also

announcing on twitter that this morning, he is going to make a big announcement set for next month. his tweet reads "i will be holding a major news conference in new york city with my children on december 15 to discuss the fact that i will be leaving great businesses in order to fully focus on running the country in order to make america great again." the president-elejt goes on to say that that it is important that he does not have a conflict of interest. well, last night, mitt romney appeared to have a second round of interviews with the president-elect for secretary of state job. and he is now speaking out about that dinner date. >> as he considers romney for secretary of state. >> i had a wonderful evening with president-elect trump. we had another discussion about affairs throughout the world. >> reporter: the former

>> i have to tell you, i have been impressed by what i have seen in the transition efforts. the people he has selected as members of his cabinet are solid, effective, capebling people. >> kris: a busy day for the transition team. tuesday, former wall street executive was selected as transportation secretary. despite naming several people to his cabinet, the tuesday morning, he tweeted "nobody should be allowed to burn the american flag. if they do, there must be consequences. perhaps loss of citizenship or a year in jail." a harsh pub punishment for an act the supreme court ruled was legal and protected by the first amendment. many republicans disagree with the comments. >> there should be some punishment. right now the supreme court decision is that people are free to express themselves.

officials in indiana on thursday to announce that they ever struck a deal with that company to keep almost a thousand of the jobs in the united states instead of moving them to mexico. voter fraud, however, remaining a hot topic in the political circles. jill stein actually sat down with us here at 7 news where she explained her reasonings for pushing foorpd with a recount in several states: including wisconsin. >> i'm clearly not doing this because it is going to put me into office. here. like any ordinary citizen. we want to be able to have confidence in our votes and our democracy. >> kris: stein and her party are trying now to raise money that is needed for recounts in michigan, pennsylvania, as well. >> anchor: also on 7: soccer fans in brazil are mourning after a team tragedy. authorities say 71 people were killed when a plane car rig a brazilian professional soccer team and journalist crashed in

survive. three players, two crew members and one journalist. last night, fans and family members gathered at the team's arena to pay respects. today investigators will continue to try and figure out exactly what caused that plane to crash. due to the lack of fire after the crash, they suspect that the accident might have been caused by the jet fuel running out. officials have already recovered the plane's black boxes. >> kris: investigators say posts on abdul artan's facebook page referenced isis and the former leader of al qaeda in yemen. there is no indication that he communicatesed with any terror group before the attack happened. artan injured 11 people when he plowed his car into a crowd and slashed people with a knife. a university police officer shot and killed him. three victims remain in the hospital today.

>> kris: not the best day to get outside so. gray and gloomy. >> anchor: yesterday was a great day to stay in bed under the covers. if you have that luxury. and maybe later on this evening as well. >> reporter: that is exactly right. we are looking at showers all day: we are this band set up. it is kind of an overspreading into southern new england. with pockets of heavy rainfall already some reports of around an inch of rain north of the mass. pike. so pretty impressive. we are loo comparable moisture to what we saw yesterday. yesterday, those heavier rainfall totals really stayed south of the mass. pike. today, we are looking at those being consistently in southern new england. we have more rain pushing out from our southwest. and that is going to bring us some widespread showers, actually, into the afternoon. a look ahead. you saw that first band set up to our north: as we head into the later afternoon hours, this does become widespread. we have some pockets of heavy rain possible into your commute home from work.

live at the scene with the very latest. dan? >> reporter: well, it seems like the other driver anybody more seriously injured. that can be kind of figured out also from looking at the wreckage behind me. you see the silver sedan was hit on its side by the sheriff's department cruiser there off to the left. you can see the damage to the front right side of the cruiser. no details yet on exactly what happened. we have some indication that the cruiser may have put on his lights and siren and just took off and front of them. we understand, though, that the sheriff's deputy forecast and his dog and the operator of the other car were all taken to the hospital. sources on the scene do tell me, however, that the sheriff's deputy was up and walking around after the accident. there was an attempt to take other operator out by med-flight. because of the weather conditions, that was unable to than. there is an indication there may be some serious injuries

you can see the accident reconstruction team from the state police on the scene. so details of exactly what happened are scarce at this hour. we talked to a couple of local residents who said they heard a bang. they didn't see anything. we will continue to stay on the scene right now. we are live in rockland, dan hausle, 7 news. >> kris: another breaking story this afternoon: we are following for you. a chaotic morning in the section of chinatown. crews were on the scene of several man hole fires earlier. you see t pouring out of the man hole there. went into nearby buildings as well. causing other concerns. this could be the reason why. it might have been triggered by the water main break that happened earlier this morning. this was scene. water pouring out into the streets, flooding several of them. the incident shutting down some of those busy roadways in chinatown. >> anchor: headaches today during the morning commute.

>> reporter: heavy smoke on kneeland street in chinatown this morning. firefighters scrambling to the scene. buildings were being evacuated. >> i have come here from new zealand. and so, yeah it's been a long journey. injust got here yesterday on a red-eye flight. i was trying to get a bit of shut-eye. i'm being told to get out. >> reporter: the fires sparked by this water main break just after 5:00 this morning. sending thousands and thousands of gallons of water cascading down the street. the water seeping into the man holes which shortstopped out several electrical lines underground. through the morning, crews worked to douse the flames and deal with water in the basements of several buildings and also fix the water main itself. >> boston, out of all the major municipalities, actually, has a very low rate of water

but we are constantly renovating, rehabilitatings, replacing mains. >> reporter: again, this is washington street and steward streets here in chinatown. the concern here is there is still a lot of water in a lot of basements and businesses here. the other issue was firefighters were going building to building to check on things like the carbon monoxide levels that appeared to be high. a lot of cleaning up to do. and boston police are asking people to s in chinatown, steve cooper, 7 news. >> kris: another big story is the wet weather we have been tracking. you saw steve in his rain gear. it is moving in. >> reporter: just a gloomy day ahead. report@soggy evening commute. more difficult travel than a lot of us would like. similar situation to yesterday. except for we have seen some heavy rainfall north of the mass. pike. yesterday, it took a little longer for it to get there.

into the afternoon. this is going to continue to expand throughout southern new england. we also have another band to our south that will push this way. that is going bring us really showers through the evening hours. a closer look at who is seeing that. already, some reports of an inch of rainfall in some pockets. billerica, seeing more moderate rainfall. the southern end of the band offering more light rainfall. this is going to continue to push into the boston metro area. once it does, we stay soggy through the afternoon. tomorrow morning. a quick look at temperatures. we are pretty mild. around average highs. a little above average. our other concern this morning has been fog. we do have reduced visibility where we are seeing those showers. with the fog on the cape and the islands starting to let up for us. fog is going to be an issue forecast as we head into the next 24 hours as well. while we are mixing this out across the cape and the islands, we will be looking at more fog as we head into tonight and tomorrow morning.

we do have some sunshine on the way soon. those details after this. >> kris: right now at least three people are dead after a deadly tornado tore through parts of alabama last night. you can see the devastation there in this video. the twister slammed a 24-hour day care center. critically injuring four people there. a church was also destroyed. rescue crews are now sifting through the damage and the debris. four people now confirmed dead after the devastating wildfires ripped through parts of eastern tennessee. the flames burning roughly 15,000 acres of park. over 250 buildings in the ski resort towns o'. >> gatlinburg and pigeon forge were destroyed. investigators are still searching for what sparked fierce flames that displaced 30 people in lawrence. we have some video of the fire as well. pretty intense there. one woman was trapped on the third floor. that fire started yesterday afternoon and quickly spread. she was rescued from the multi-family home on east haverhill street. people who live the say it was

tell them that his father was driving under the influence again. that was burns' ninth oui charge. he will be back in court next week. >> kris: the springfield mayor will speak this week with the president of hampshire college about the decision to not fly the american flag on campus. students allegedly burned the flag in protest of dojdz trump's presidential election. hampshire college president jonathan lash made a controversial decision to take down the flag after the incident in order to maintain peace on campus. there has been burning protest all over the country since the election of president-elect donald trump. sarno says he is hoping they can come to a compromise to get the flags back flying over the campus again. to the latest on the trump transition: and the president-elect announcing on twit they are morning that he will make a big announcement next month. his tweet reading "i will be holding a major news conference in new york city with my children on december 15 to discuss the fact that i will be leaving my great

we are not through it yet. we are going to continue to see this rain push in from the southwest. as it does so, we will fill out throughout southern new england with these rain showers. and then see that through the overnight hours actually into tomorrow morning. we have a wet end to the month of november here. as we head into the afternoon, we are looking at the likely chance for rain showers. especially by mid to late afternoon. widespread rain showers. where you see those oranges and yellows, that is where we see the potential for some heavy rainfall. that does line up with evening commutes and dinnertime. we continue to see that wet
