and this is on top of the rain that we picked up yesterday, which the green shading here, primarily south of the connecticut rhode island, southeastern massachusetts, over an inch of rain, 1 1/2 of rain on the cape and you move up through the metro and north of town and not as much. that was all from round 1. here is round 2 right now. it's happening. and it'll be with us not only this evening, but i think there is another batch of rain on the way that will last overnight tonight. here's your timeline at 7:00 tonight. again, widespread rain across vauthern new england and as we changes. i mean, the placement of the colors move around a little bit but the point here is that we are anticipating widespread rain. occasionally some moderate to perhaps heavy rain. there are no flood watches or flash-flood watches in effect. so that's a signal to us that weather service is not anticipating widespread heavy rain. in any event, by 7:00 tomorrow morning, we do move the rain out of here. it's from this weather system right here. once that moved through tomorrow morning, then we get the sunshine back tomorrow.

yeah crews are still busy work taking up lanes in the theater district as crews work to clean up the mess here, it began early this morning with a broken water main, followed by fire. [ sirens ] >> we -- a firefighter hit the door and we just left. >> reporter: thick acrid smoke spewing from in chinatown just after 9:00 this morning, forcing as many as 100 people staying at the boston youth hostel out in the streets bundled up in blankets. >> just got here yesterday on a red eye flight and trying to get a bit of shut-eye and suddenly being told to get out. >> reporter: the manhole fires were sparked by this hours earlier, a 20 inch water main burst, sending thousands and thousands and thousands gallons of water cascading down the

>> we're talking about some of these pipes have been in the ground for decades. maybe some a century long. that's certainly something we're worked on. >> reporter: roads in the area sealed off for hours while firefighters used a special foam to knock down the stubborn flames. >> we're using something especially designed for manholes. hopefully the produce works. it's a very accurate product as far as containing the fire. >> reporter: crews worked to pump flooded-out basements before digging up the road to repair the brokete meanwhile, health inspectors in the city were working with businesses to assess the damage done. >> the voluntary closure of about 12 businesses. we're working with them to assess what the actual damage is to product and to the spaces. at evening commute takes you here between neil and washington streets, this intersection here. you may want to try to avoid the the area. boston police are saying there are a couple of lanes taken out right now, the clean-up continues and it's probably not the best place to be as you head

the other issue here, was firefighters were concerned about high levels of carbon monoxide in some of the buildings here, and they went building to building with special meters just to make sure everyone was safe, and in the end, there were no injuries here today. we're live in boston, steve cooper, 7news. and a car crashes into a bar in avington. you can see the front of the car smashed through the wall on brockton ave. fire crews rushing to the scene but no one was hurt here. no word if the driver will face any charges or not. >> 7ws rocklands. a plymouth county sheriff's deputy rushed to the hospital after his cruiser crashed. another driver and a police dog also hurt. dan hausle is live in rockland with the very latest. >> well, the police cruiser and the carry hit were both traveling down beach street, from right to left on your screen. but the car that was hit turned left, and then was hit by the cruiser that had hit its lights and sirens. >> reporter: investigators trying to figure out what went

sheriff's deputy's cruiser slammed into the side of a small sedan, sending the car's driver, the deputy and his k-9 partner all to hospitals. >> i heard this bang, and i'm familiar with that noise. it's very frightening to hear it because i -- as i told you, our street is one that's very busy, you know, always accidents. the cruisers always flying up the street. >> reporter: rosemary is not the only resident who heard the crash. diane came out and took these pictures as first driver from the wreckage. she says the deputy and his dog didn't appear as badly hurt. >> the sheriff got out of the car. he wouldn't get on the stretcher. he walked and got into the ambulance. >> reporter: rockland police say the deputy had turned on his lights and siren to answer a call. two cars pulled over, but the third car in front of the line didn't, and instead turned left, then was hit by the sheriffs cruiser. >> we really don't know if the

distractions may have been going on at the time. it -- we do know the lights and sirens were on. there were witnesses, and the two vehicles that did pull over to the right, they did stop. >> reporter: the chief says the officer got help quickly, who lives just steps from the scene. rockland police and the sheriff's department say they're not sure what kind of call that the officer was responding to with lights and sirens. they say they don't think it came out of dispatch. it may have been something he was responding to on his own. no word yet on thedi accident. we're live in rockland, dan hausle, 7news. new details on the soccer team tragedy in brazil. officials say recording shows the pilot of a brazilian charter plane says he ran out of fuel before the crash monday night. the pilot repeatedly asked air traffic control prplg to land because of a total electric failure and lack of fuel. he then goes silent after he says he's flying 9,000 feet off the ground.

with a brazilian soccer team. fans from the columbian team that were set to face them holding a vigil late last night to honor the victims. a memorial will be held tonight at the stadium where the teams were set to play in a championship match. authorities now saying the ohio state attacker may have been inspired by terror organizations like isis but had no direct link to these groups. they say 18-year-old abdul artan acted under his own volition when he drove a car into a crowd at ohio with a knife injuring 11. >> at this point we do not see any links to a terrorist organization. at this stage we see no communications, direct communications with a terrorist organization overseas by this individual. >> officials say artan was likely self radicalized. selves shot and killed by a camp us police officer during that incident.

carrying a weapon but today the district attorney says evidence showed shows he was armed. the d.a. says actions of kenneth scott were justified. his family says he was sitting in a car reading a book when the confrontation began. the shooting led to two nights of violent protests in downtown charlotte. the d.a. says this will end their inquiry into the shooting. >> we still have real questions about theis made that day in terms of how they confronted keith, how they reacted to the information that he had a brain injury, and whether they used appropriate deeverythinglation techniques to end this situation a way it didn't result in the loss of keith scott's life. >> another family attorney has said scott did have a gun on him, but claims there's no proof he posed a threat to officers. turning now to the trump transition. mitt romney meeting once again

trump regarding the position of secretary of state. mr. trump is expected to make his decision soon for one of the most important positions in the cabinet. and today mr. trump tweeted that he will be making a big announcement next month about him leaving the business to his children. alan lopez has more -- ellen lopez has more from new york. >> reporter: donald trump announcing his pick for treasury secretary steven manuchen and trump's former campaign finance chairman says his top priority is tax reform. >> we're gonna significant middle income tax cut since reagan. >> reporter: he's a long-time banker working at goldman sachs before starting his own hedge fund. but he isn't without controversy. critics say manuchen can't be trusted after profiting from the housing collapse when others were losing their homes. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren reacting to the pick. his selection as treasury secretary should send slivers down the spine of every american

eighth term. had ryan had argued the party needs to strengthen its connection with the working class. and some wild weather tearing through alabama. severe storms in the south killing at least five people and destroying everything in its path. at least 25 homes and several other structures completely damaged. three people have died in alabama, two in tennessee. 7's sarah french has more. >> reporter: devastation in alabama. >> i heard a real loud crack right o the same time i looked up and i saw lightning strike, just kind of through my blinds, and i knew it was real close. i didn't know how close. but i knew it was real close. >> reporter: a mother and son pinned underneath their three-bedroom trailer. that man holding up a wall to keep at the from falling on his 90-year-old mother. >> it's kind of chaotic because we had a lot of community members that was up here trying to dig them out and help them out. >> reporter: more than a dozen buildings were destroyed

shopping plaza. the tornado affected an area of homes and businesses that covered nearly half a mile. communities now coming together to survey the damage. >> everybody is just pulling together. people out here trying to help their neighbors, they don't even know them and trying to work with them. >> the storms are expected to move southeast today. authorities are still going door to door looking for any other victims. in the newsroom, i'm sarah french, 7news. we are following more news here a smoky situation. raging wildfires have ripped through the area with the devastating results. at least seven people have been found dead and several families are still searching for their loved ones. >> reporter: search and rescue efforts underway this morning in fire ravaged eastern tennessee. >> this is the largest fire in the last 100 years of the state of tennessee. blitz. anyway, rain here on the masspike. the time something the worst part because it's happening during the evening commute and we'll have that i think a little later this evening and overnight tonight than round 1 last night. that shutdown before midnight but this second round of rain if you also in new england now and extends all the way down the eastern seaboard through the virginias, now eastern tennessee where they badly need the rain. ed so this portion of the system also has to work up across tonight, and then the cool front will come through and move the whole thing out to sea by early tomorrow morning. so here you go. here's your timeline, 7:00 this evening. if you are out and about, perhaps you are headed to a holiday party or doing some christmas shopping after work, you'll need the rain gear. make sure you've got an umbrella that can withstand some wind at coastline. winds 10 to 12 miles per hour not high enough for an advisory but a blustery evening and that rain continues, after midnight tonight, overnight tonight and

is offshore. there may be one or two stragglers, there always are, in the pack that will be on the south and northshore around 6:00 or 7:00. but for most of us the rain shuts down before tomorrow gets going. now, the amount of additional rain on the way, most of us around 3/4 to as much as an inch of rain which will bring the two-day totals close to 2 inches of beneficial rain. cool and raw right now in the 40s. last night if you were out and about, the temps jumped into the upper 50s to around i don't think that happens tonight. i think the cool raw conditions will stay put in the upper 40s. here is that wind. again, it's not overwhelming or damaging but certainly enough to move you and the umbrella around if you're out and about this evening. rain will taper off after midnight tonight. temps in the 40s and they will start to rise toward day break tomorrow around 50 and tomorrow itself breezy and mild all day long. you don't have to wait all day for these temps to occur. they'll be in the morning hours with clouds early on and then sunshine returning. so tomorrow's a decent day. a little bit on the windy side
