predominantly dry by 8:00 or 9:00 for most of us. to our northwest, much cooler air, a warm front kind of camped out to our south, and you can see much warmer air actually coming to our southeast. put the 60 degrees that way. up to 40 degrees in jaffrey. mixed temperatures this morning. you'll want to bundle up. it will be a breezy day. we also have some fog to deal with this morning. >> christa: okay. wet roads, as well. imur gurr -- danielle gersh h want to give yourself some extra time. be extra careful out there, especially over bridges and overpasses. let's go to the maps. not seeing any issues out there. 93 and route 1 heading into boston problem-free. braintree to boston northbound on the expressway, just ten minutes so far this morning. south of town, route 3, 24 and 95 all looking good. the pike wide open, back to framingham and route 2 and 3 not seeing any issues. take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. ten minutes rate to boston northbound on the expressway.

from 128 and 93 southbound, 128 to the zakim bridge, just 11 minutes. the "t" and commuter rail starting the morning on schedule. back to you, guys. >> sarah: happening today, a teen accused of murdering his own mother facing a judge. a relative says he new something was wrong and begged neighbor to call 911. >> christa: police begged the victim's son overnight. now he's being charged with murder. here's 7's jennifer eagan, she is live at the scene. >> jennifer: christa, the 18-year-old suspect will be heading here the brockton district court. neighbors say he was sitting at the home after the attack and investigators are still working on a motive. >> i knew it was something bad only because she was wailing and screaming and she did say 911, 911. >> jennifer: maryanne monteiro dialed 911 as a desperate grandmother pulled her toward her home on merritt avenue knew

house, and at this point in time, i now know it was to get her daughter out of the house. >> jennifer: but it was too late. 44-year-old mania meneide had been stabbed to death. her son frantz polynice has been charged in the attack. monteiro says she walked up to the home with polynice's grandmother around 1:00 yesterday afternoon not yet realizing what was going on. >> he came lunging through the kitchen at the door where we were standing. i just pulled the grandmother out of there and i just kept pulling her away from the house. >> jennifer: firefighters were on scene first. they went into the house and held down polynice who had come outside until police arrived. the district attorney says they recovered a knife. they don't yet know a motive. >> the mother-son relationship, for it to end this way, it's terrible, it's tragic. we need to make sure we find out what happened. >> jennifer: neighbors tell us they never noticed any problems at the home. polynice faces charges of

live in brockton, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: breaking news in washington state. a standoff after a suspect shot and killed a police officer. the suspect remains barricaded inside a home right now. according to police, the officer was responding to a report domestic disturbance when he was am burked. fellow officers and civilians lined the streets officer's body as it was transferred to the hospital last night. this is first time a tacoma officer has died in the line of duty since 1987. >> christa: chaos in chinatown after a major water main break after the water finally receded on washington street. more problems. you see them there. smoke started seeping from man hole covers. let's go live to 7's victoria warren. she's in chinatown.

>> victoria: definitely a lot better, christa. no fires or floods. there is still plenty of work to be done. they're trying to get the roads fixed and in good shape in time for this morning commute. there's still a big mess, a lot of clean-up. this left dozens of businesses closed. thick black smoke billowing into the air, man hole fires burning underground, streets flooded in chinatown after a massive water main break. carbon monoxide levels inside a few buildings hitting dangerous le. everyone got booted out by the firemen. >> more than 100 people evacuated. it was hard to tell how far the underground fire would spread. >> typically the man hole fires travel in sequence, so it just starts popping down the street. >> victoria: it all started when a 20-inch pipe burst, spewing thousands of gallons of water, shutting down several businesses. >> this is a precautionary method. there was about three the four feet of water in some of the basements. we want to make sure everything

>> victoria: the all-day event snarled traffic. eventually crews replaced the damaged pipes. the mayor says this may be a case of aging infrastructure and says even though the problem is fixed, it will take much longer for things to be business as usual in chinatown. >> a lot of our businesses will be closed for quite some time. there is still water in a lot of the basements. >> victoria: so they're going to continue working, trying to get as many of these roads open in time for the height of the morning rush, but if y through this area, you'll want to take all of this into consideration this morning. live this morning in chinatown, victoria warren, 7news "today in new england." >> sarah: now to a developing story. places of worship being hit by hate. threatening letters sent to mosques around the country. now it's happening here in new england. 's yaai chen is in the control room with the latest. >> nancy: sarah, several mosques nationwide have reported getting a hateful letter from california warning muslims to leave the country or face genocide. now a mosque in rhode island has

a hate-filled letter delivered to the islamic center of rhode island. >> you see the wave of hate is really at your doorstep. >> nancy: the imam opened it saturday. it's addressed to the children of satan and calls muslims vile and filthy. it's called "americans for a better way." >> the new president-elect will do things that hitler did to the jews. this is really alarming. angeles is similar to those sent to mosques in ohio, michigan, indiana, colorado and georgia. >> if you look at the stamp, it's coming from california, but this is something for the f.b.i. to investigate. >> nancy: the imam gave the letter to the f.b.i. >> be concerned about your community members, your kids, your family. >> nancy: the council on american-islamic relations has

steps to make sure muslims are safe while worshipping in their mosques. >> christa: nancy, thank you. happening today, the west roxbury pipeline is set to start transmitting gas despite two years of protesting. on monday mayor walsh and other city officials sent letters to the company that owns the pipeline, accusing them of breaking their promise to share safety plans. the company says the security plan is posted, though, outside the quarry's entrance. also the case against that plainville teenager accused of encouraging her friend to commit suicide will be back in court today, for a pretrial hearing. michelle carter is charged with involuntary manslaughter. earlier this month the judge ruled the 20-year-old's statements from investigators and information from her cell phone can be used in court. >> sarah: reading police have identified the man wanted for 14 break-ins. the 24-year-old targeted retail stores as well as the reading public library.

the police chief in dighton is off the job this morning. at an emergency meeting wednesday, selectmen voted to suspend chief anton roderick without pay indefinitely. officials say he used the department clothing allowance to buy women's clothing for his girlfriend. roderick was charged in court this week with larceny and making false statements to police. >> christa: now to the latest in president-elect donald trump's transition. today he plans to travel to indiana for a major business announcement. on the campaign trail, the president-elect promed company carrier in indiana. now the company has closed a deal to keep close to 1,000 jobs right here in the u.s. the company initially had planned to close one of its indiana plants and take 1,400 jobs to mexico. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren is weighing in on the president-elect's choices for his cabinet. talking to anderson cooper, warren said the president-elect is going back on his campaign trail promises on who he would

>> you know, i think what a lot of americans are sick of is a government that works for those at the top. i think that donald trump tapped into that anger, and now donald trump is doing 180 degrees on it. an he's putting wall street insiders into exactly the jobs where he criticized wall street insiders before. >> christa: another familiar face rumored to be in the running for a cabinet position. sarah palin reportedly being considered veterans affairs. >> sarah: a tornado leaving destruction in its wake for the second day. the death toll stands at five and hundreds have been left homeless. kris anderson has a closer look at the damage. >> kris: sarah, this morning clean-up continues across several states after three people were killed in alabama on wednesday and at least three others critically injured. dozens of builds and homes were leveled when a tornado tore through several small communities.

georgia. several homes destroyed by the twisters. the storm knocking down trees and power lines, as well, businesses in the area lost power, but no one was injured, so some good news there. and the storms killed two people in tennessee. the trees uprooted. you see the downed power lines across the state. a number of homes and buildings were leveled, crews spent much of the day trying to restore power in the affected communities. today the national weather service will be in all three states surveying some of that damage. back to you, guys. >> christa: kris, thank you. still ahead, a local senior center worker accused of taking home food on the state's dime. now he's facing charges. >> sarah: and this joyride came to a crashing end and it's streamed on social media. >> christa: and dolly parton is making major announcement to

our way. we'll see some sunshine for the first time in a while, but first we have the get through the fog and the chance for some showers. it will move out of here pretty quickly today. then we're looking at a breezy day with some peeks of sunshine headed our way. mild temperatures over the next couple days. as we head into the weekend, things cool down for us. a recap of what we saw yesterday in terms of rainfall totals, around an inch of rain in boston, more than an inch in bedford. to our southeast, less. they grab more rain with that first round of rain. everybody seeing about an rainfall with this system. that's starting to push on out of here. we've seen pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall, currently especially in north central massachusetts. as we head into the day, we're going to see this scoot on out of here. dry skies behind us. as this frontal system does pass to our east, we do usher in some breezy conditions behind that front that pushes through. so right now, we're looking at pretty quiet winds for us, moderate condition, but it is going to get breezy out there. temperature-wise, much cooler to our northwest.

close to 60 degrees. that's indicative of where this warm front is kind of set up. even out here a bit today, we're looking at temperatures well above our average highs for the first day in december. also we're dealing with fog out there. visibility down to half a mile in boston. four miles worth of visibility in norwood. worcester at three miles worth of visibility. it will take a while for that to mix out. but once it does, we'll increase some of that sunshine. we do keep things breezy today. so wind gusts up to around 25mph. but again, take a look at these teer average highs. highs today in the mid to upper 50s for most spots. into tonight, we add on cloud cover. staying breezy with lows in the mid-30s for most of us. it will be chilly when you factor in these winds. so breezy today, still breezy tomorrow, as well. your 7 on 7 forecast showing temperatures dropping a little into friday. and we do have the slight chance for some drizzle. also seeing some sunshine into tomorrow. but take a look at temperatures as we head into next week. we steadily fall off. 45 degrees into saturday. and by monday we're talking upper 30s.

seasonable rather quickly. >> sarah: now to a shockingly dangerous drive caught on camera. a 20-year-old man speeding down a new england highway. he was streaming the alarming behavior live on facebook. >> christa: well, it's in the surprising he econventionly crashed that car. let's go to 7's nancy chen with more on quite a wild story here. nancy? >> nancy: that driver was seriously injured after police say he was driving more than 100mph. that man streamed his wild ridee island, on facebook live. you can see it here, him weaving in and out of traffic, nearly hitting several cars. police say he then spun out of control, hitting a dump truck before crashing into a jersey barrier. rescue crews had to pull the man out of the car after the traffic backed up for at least two hours. as of this morning, the driver is listed in critical condition. no word yet if he'll face any charges. in the newsroom, nancy chen, 7news "today in new england."

meantime, flames that took over this tennessee resort town of gatlinburg earlier this week have now dissipated. amid all the crumbling and charred buildings, residents are on the road starting to rebuild. officials are still finding victims, though, of those fires. three more bodies were located wednesday. that brings the death toll now to 7. the fire in the great smoky mountain area torched more than 700 homes and businesses. officials say they're doing their best just to stay positive. and this picture here shows a little bit of wha for fire crews in tennessee. those fire crews are taking their first sleep break in 36 hours. another firefighter posted a photo of his coworkers sleeping on concrete. ? jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene nil e-mail begging you not to take my man ? >> christa: and dolly parton

the "t" and commuter rail running on schedule. back to you, guys. >> christa: danielle, thank you. let's go to the day's top stories. a brockton mother stabbed to death inside of her own home, and police say her son is the one to blame. the 18-year-old will be appearing in court later this morning. they say the stabbing happened yesterday afternoon on merritt avenue. firefighters arrived on the scene first and then apparently held the suspect down until police managed to arrive. the f.b.i.'s investigating after a mosque in rhode islan it called muslims "children of satan" and said they were "vile and filthy." investigate, say it was sent by somebody in los angeles, and they believe that similar letters were sent to mosques in ohio and michigan, indiana, colorado and georgia, as well. right now crews are working to get the roads in chinatown back open this morning after a burst pipe caused a water main break on kneeland street some the break actually led to fires in some man holes as crews worked

several businesses had to evacuate because of carbon monoxide concerns. that included 100 people in a youth hostel. crews are still on the scene this morning cleaning things up. >> sarah: also on 7, a carver town employee on the job. investigators say it all started with a missing meal at a senior center. 7's nicole oliverio live in carver with more. nicole? >> nicole: that's right, sarah. it was a missing piece of meat that ultimately trouble. according to police they say he was caught stealing from the food pantry. at carver's council on aging, it's easy to find out what's on the day's menu, so when chef david lavoie wasn't serving up food he ordered, workers became suspicious. >> the prime rib was what started the investigation. the prime rib was ordered and nerve served. >> nicole: police say that

being ordered and it's an item that's not there. it's a suspicious item to have ordered because it's not typically something you serve to elderly clients. >> nicole: investigators caught lavoie removing food after hours with help from his girlfriend and her daughter. >> we have no comment. i don't know how you got this information. i can't talk about anything. mission is to serve the elderly. members surprised to hear about what happened. >> i've known him ever since he started working here, yeah, and he was a nice, nice man. >> this is a big deal because it's a violation of public trust. it's a violation of the trust of the people. >> nicole: it's unclear how long this has been going on. lavoie did resign instead of meeting with the town's administrator. he also was arraigned in court last week along with two other women caught on surveillance video. that's the latest live in

>> christa: the sheriff's deputy is now recovering after a cruiser crash that happened in rockland. another driver and the deputy's k-9 were also hurt. investigators say the deputy had his life and his sirens on when he crashed into the side of that car that turned in front of him instead of pulling over. >> the radio was up and whatever the distraction may have been going on at the time. we do know the lights and sirens were on. there were witnesses. and the two vehicles that did pull over to the right, they did stop. >> >> christa: police say the driver of that other car is in serious condition. now to quite a ride in abington. a car crashing into a bar on wednesday. the vehicle smashing through the wall of j.p. ryan's on brockton avenue table pact caused some serious damage, but luckily no one was hurt. >> sarah: a plastic bag ban in the city of boston is making its way toward a vote. the security council discussing the ban for the first time on a meeting on wednesday. the ordinance should ban single-use plastic bags in the city and add a five-cent fee for

bags. >> i really think we have an opportunity here to do something that's absolutely meaningful, absolutely impactful, helps the environment, helps small businesses, and offers an incentive by encouraging consumers with that five-cent refund when you bring a reusable bag. >> sarah: the proposal will be handed to a committee and be put to a full hearing. >> christa: boston drivers prepare to slow down. the city council voting to lower the default speed limit in boston to 25mph. that would start in january. mayor walsh says the change is important to lower the risk of vehicle-related injuries and deaths, as well. and members of the one of the largest unions in the state set to make a showing at tonight's tree lighting at boston common. members of aftme say they will not picket. they don't want to bring negativity to the event, but they will be there. they want to bring attention to their negotiations with the city.

>> christa: trending today, a canadian town serving up a musical punishment for drunk drivers. officers say, maybe you want the listen, maybe they want to, maybe they don't. they want the play music from the band nickel back whenever they pull over someone for being drunk behind the wheel. i guess that's the punishment. the town says they'll also issue a heavy fine, as well. >> sarah: i love nickel back. all right. a woman from minnesota making miss u.s.a. pageant history. halima ha deem became the first fully covered woman to compete in the miss u.s.a. minnesota pageant. she wore a ha job during the swimsuit portion of the competition. she made it to the semifinal round before getting eliminated. >> christa: and nestle chocolate set to have a lot less sugar. it's found a way the reduce sugar by as much as 40%. nestle says the treats will taste sweetener smaller amounts.

here's jennifer eagan with more. >> jennifer: christa, that 18-year-old suspect will be coming here the brockton district court later this morning. he faces two charges, homicide and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. now, investigators have not commented on a possible motive in this case. neighbors on parrot avenue in brockton say the suspect's grandmother was wailing in the street around 1:00 yesterday afternoon. she pleaded with neighbor to call police. that neighbor told us the 18-year-old suspect her as she walked up to the home, not yet realizing what was going on. firefighters were first to arrive on scene. they tried the save 44-year-old mania meneide, but she did not survive her injuries. firefighters also held on to the teenage suspect, according to neighbors, until police arrived on the scene. the district attorney says detectives recovered a knife from the scene and now 18-year-old frantz polynice will be here again at brockton district court later today. live in brockton, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: all right, jen, thank you.

boston police are searching for suspects after a group of people stole thousands of dollars worth of iphones from the apple store on boylston street. it happened around 6:30 tuesday night. investigators say four suspects took ten ir iphones from a display table and then took off. police believe it's similar to an apple store robbery that happened in natick back in october. seven people were caught on camera taking 13,000 dollars worth of iphones from the display cases. >> christa: right now police in connection with a robbery that happened at a store in uxbridge. investigators say man and a woman stole more than $1,000 in cash from two separate cashiers and then police say they drove off in this b.m.w. right now they're reviewing surveillance footage the try the identify them. >> sarah: police are investigating after a truck crashed into a utility pole in wellesley. it happened on overbrook drive last night. several wires were knocked down.

the area lost power, as well, but no one was injured in that. and the storms have killed sadly two people in tennessee. there were uprooted trees and downed power lines across that state. a number of homes and buildings there were leveled. crews spent much of the day trying to restore power in the community. >> kris: caught on camera, a man allegedly speeding and phase booking the teen lost control of his car and crashed and new officers are asking questions. >> sarah: that driver was seriously injured after police say he was driving more than 100mph. the man streamed his wild ride wednesday morning through providence on facebook live. you can see him weaving in and out of traffic, nearly hitting several cars. police say he then spun out of control, hitting a dump truck before crashing into a jersey barier. rescue crews tried to pull the man out of the car after the crash.

braintree to boston northbound on the expressway, lots of stop-and-go traffic. we have a crash we're watching in hingham on route 3 northbound. this is at exit 16 here. south of town, route 24 northbound, stop and go back to brockton, the pike now too bad out to framingham. we're not seeing any major delays. some good news. there routes 2 and 3 not too bad either. take a look at those drive times if you're getting ready to head out the door. 25 minutes braintree to boston northbound on the expressway. 12 minutes into town on the pike from 128 and 93 southbound. 23 minutes this morning on the "t." we're still watching some minor delays on the red line. back to you, guys. >> christa: danielle, thank you. we're tracking out of washington state where there is standoff under way right now in tacoma after police say that a suspect shot and killed a police officer late last night. investigators say the suspect is still barricaded inside that house as we speak. they don't believe anybody else is inside. according to police, the officer was responding to a reported

was ambushed. also breaking, brockton police searching from two suspects after a chase that ended in the crash. the officers were initially responding to reports of shots fired, and that's when they pulled over the car. the driver took off, led police on a pursuit, and the suspect's car ultimately collided with a cruiser, and the two people inside the car took off. meantime, an officer suffered minor injuries. >> christa: also on 7 now, missing sparking an investigation. police say it led them to an employee who is now accused of taking food from that facility. nicole oliverio is live in carver with more on how authorities were tipped off. just a bizarre crime here, nicole. >> nicole: it really, is kris. a town employee had been a chef with the council on aging for about six and a half years. it wasn't until they noticed some missing food in the food pantry, particularly a piece of

police searching for two people that led them on the chase. during this pursuit, the suspects crashed into the cruiser. the officer was slightly injured but going to be okay. the driver and passenger took off. police with k-9 units searched the area of pleasant street, but those two suspects are still on the run this morning. right now police are investigating after a mother was murdered, and officers say the woman was stabbed to death. now her 18-year-old son had been arrested in connection with this crime. >> christa: he's due in court later on this morning. let's head out the brockton with more. here's 7's jennifer eagan. >> jennifer: christa, that 18-year-old suspect will be coming here to brockton district court later this morning. he faces two charges: homicide and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. now investigators have not commented on a possible motive in this case. neighbors on merritt avenue say the suspect's grandmother was wailing in the street yesterday afternoon around 1:00. she pleaded with neighbor to call police. that neighbor told us the 18-year-old suspect lunged at her as she walked up to the home not yet realizing what was going on there.

investigators say the suspect remains barricaded inside a home right now. they do not believe anyone else was inside the home at this time. according to police, the officer was responding to a reported domestic disturbance when he was ambushed. fell row officers and civilians lined the streets to salute the officer's body as it was transported from the hospital to the medical examiner's office last night. this is the first time a tacoma officer has died in the line of duty since 1997. guys, back to you. >> christa: all right, sarah. work continues after quite a scare in the street. the water main break leading the major problems in chinatown. first the issue, as you see there, was flooding. but we're told there were also fires underground as well. so let's head out live to oston. 7's victoria warren is on scene. vicki, how are things coming along right now? >> victoria: christa, it's a major improvement over yesterday morning. there's in smoke, there's in fire, there's in flooding, but a

clean-up that they're going to have to do. businesses today remain closed. yesterday thick black smoke was billowing into the air. man hole fires were burning underground and streets were flooded in china town after a massive water main break. carbon monoxide levels inside a few buildings hitting dangerous levels, so more than 100 people had to evacuate. it all started when a 20-inch pipe burst, spewing thousands of gallons of water. several businesses were shut down. traffic was snarled all day. eventually cre replaced the damaged pipe. the mayor says this may be a case of aging infrastructure. but the specific cause of what made this pipe burst, that's still under investigation. as you can see, live out here right now, they have lanes open. that's good news. but there are still some closures in the area, so this morning's commute in this area is likely to be a bit of a mess. live this morning in chinatown, victoria warren, 7news "today in
