a car smashing into the side of a wept worth police officer's cruiser. the officer inside that cruiser had to be rushed to the hospital. >> kris: police arrested one suspect in this case 678 three others managed to get away. jennifer eagan is at the scene with all the breaking details. jen? >> jennifer: kris, good morning. this happened at the intersection of parker street and ruggles street. as you mentioned, the cruiser that was hit belonged to the wentworth police department. this happened around the officer, who was inside at the time, was taken to the hospital by boston e.m.s. as a precaution. minutes earlier there had been a report of shots fired in this area and a car leaving the scene. police say the car that hit that wentworth cruiser matched the description of the car related to that report of shots fired. according to police, there were four people inside the car. they ran from the car after it collided with the wentworth cruiser. one of the suspects was caught. the other three got away. police pulled clothes and shoes

collected evidence for about an hour this morning. again, that officer who was inside the cruiser was taken to the hospital, but he is expected to be okay. live in boss this morning, jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> kris: breaking story from overnight, man shot inside of a car in dorchester. we're told he suffered severe injuries and was taken to the hospital. it all happened at the intersection of devin and normandy streets. so far no arrests have been made. >> christa: and breaking news out of milton. one person is dead after this seri it happened on brush hill road at cheever street. we're told that car slammed right into a tree. police are still on the scene trying the figure out what caused the driver to lose control. >> kris: happening today, patriots' star rob gronkowski is set to have back surgery later this morning for an injury that will likely sideline him for the rest of the season. gronk's family confirming he is indeed going under the knife in los angeles for a herniated disc.

head found nearby. a horrible discovery along the riverbank in lawrence. the essex county district attorney says a man's decapitated body was found, and now a criminal investigation is under way. crime scene investigators combed the area along the merrimack river right off mccabe court. it all started thursday afternoon when the d.a. says a woman out walking her dog called 911 after body. investigators left with bags of evidence and the medical examiner will work to identify the body and exactly how this man died. the d.a. says foul play is suspected. and the district attorney's office says they will not speculate on the identity of this man until after they hear from the medical examiner's office. live this morning in lawrence, victoria warren, 7news "today in

>> kris: now a story you'll see on just one station. officials are still looking for whoever left behind a symbol of hate at a brookline elementary school. school officials say a student drew a swastika on the chalkboard in a classroom at lincoln elementary school last week. teachers in the area are disturbed by that hateful message. >> it's really stunning, sad that it happened. they learned it somewhere. they're reacting t so, you know, i wonder where it came from. >> kris: the brookline public school superintendent released a statement reading in part, "this is a disturbing normalization of hate and speech symbol, but this speech and these symbols are not reflective of who we are as a community in the public schools of brookline." >> christa: and new promises coming from the trump transition. >> we're going to make joint

temperatures. we're about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than yesterday at this time. even though it does feel significant cooler, we're still above our average high. so mild again today, but a few dress cooler than yesterday. we kind of fall off a couple degrees here every day enter the weekend enter your sunday forecast, which will be significantly cooler. right now predominantly clear skies throughout eastern massachusetts. more cloud cover as you head into the west. and this is going to be the trend this morning. we'll see a mixture of sun and clouds into the day, of that will stay to our west. what i'm talking about is flurries and higher terrain, berkshires. but for most of us in southern new england, we'll talk about flurries and sunshine. cooler air in the upper midwest. mid-30s. they've been keeping up with us in terms of temperatures and above average temperatures until just recently. now significantly cooler. highs in the low 40s in detroit and again a wintry mix in upstate new york. we are looking at dry skies. so here's what's bringing that wintry mix, some snow, some flurries to our northwest.

and a little energy out ahead of that is touching off flurry activity. some of these flurries could push into the berkshires, but for all of us, we're seeing sunshine. and we're not going to see those flurries headed our way headed into eastern massachusetts. temperatures in the upper 40s for us today. again above our average highs, well above our average highs, which are now in the mid-40s. but you can see we gradually taper off, and by monday, a lot of us struggle to reach into the low 40s. so what's going to make thing feel a bit cooler here through the next couple d we're still dealing with a breezy start to the day. some gusts up to around 22mph on block island and p-town dealing with gusts up to around 30mph right now. we'll see more widespread gusts as you head into the rest of the day and our winds still out of the west between 10 and 20mph. temperatures are comfortable for us today again in the mid-40s. some of us getting close to 50 degrees. we'll see mostly sunny skies into tomorrow, and we this stay breezy, as well. for today, again, watch out for

earthquakes in april, rachel wanted to do something. >> in ecuador they had a lot of earthquakes, and i thought that was pretty bad. i wanted to help them, because i saw pictures of kids getting stuck under buildings or kids being hurt. >> christa: so rachel and her friends drew up posters, and they collected clothes and sent them to earthquake survivors with the help of the red cross. >> because it makes me happy to help others. >> she came to me not only with the she had everything written out. >> christa: rachel also collected money by asking students to dress down at a school where uniforms are the norm. kids showed up in clothing from their family's countries. >> a lot of people wanted to join and do it. so we got a lot of money for it. >> christa: and a lot of countries were represented. >> probably like 50 countries. i'm not sure. >> wearing things that represented their countries or their culture, wherever they're from, was really meaningful.

like that in my entire life ever over here. this is a safe neighborhood. >> christa: police say none of the employees was hurt, but robbers did get away with some cash. >> it's too many weapons. too many weapons. too many drugs, fentanyl, everything. >> less than an hour later, another clerk saw two men dressed in black wearing white "scream" masks by a dumpster. investigators believe they are the same t say the men who run the liquor store are good people who don't need this. >> these are my friends. you know, i've known the guy for a long time. that's ridiculous. >> the liquor store is back open, but police are still searching for those two suspects. nancy chen, 7news "today in new england." >> kris: police are searching for three suspects after an alarming home invasion in brockton. a 71-year-old navy veteran came home and found three masked men waiting to rob him.

terrorized him with a taser. officials say the invaders got away with old silver coins and left the man tied up for hours before he got free and called 911. >> i'm stunned. i don't know. i mean, look at the neighborhood. it isn't someplace you'd come to rob as far as i can see. >> kris: friends of this veteran who see him at the home say they see him at the same doughnut shop every day and he's the type the bounce back and he's going to be okay. >> christa: police in sharon fired outside the econo lodge hotel. somebody staying at the hotel called police saying they heard gunshots. so when officers arrived, they found bullet cases and a weapon nearby. police are still searching for the shooter right now. massachusetts state police will be unveiling their new drone. the drone will be able to used to survey and photograph scenes as troopers investigate accidents on state highways. the cost here, about $18,000.

eventually have a fleet of these unmanned aerial vehicles. >> kris: state lawmakers have approved new safety rules when it comes to duck boats. this comes after the april accident where a 28-year-old woman was killed while riding a scooter near boston common. the measure requires all duck boat operators to separate responsibility between driver and the tour guide. the bill now heads to governor baker's desk. the cost to park in the back bay and the seaport district is expected to jump significantly next month. according to drivers will have to pay $3.75 per hour to park in the back bay and up to four hours per hour in the seaport district. right now the rate at the parking meter is $1.25. the higher rates are being tested in hopes of opening up more stations. >> christa: and classes at some boston schools may start at different times next year as administrators hope to save money on busing. according to the "globe," officials are considering making the changes so that there is an even distribution of when schools open, which would allow

scene. police say the car that hit the wentworth cruiser matched the description of the car related to the report of shots fired. now, according to police, there were four people inside that car. they ran from the car after it collided with the webt worth cruiser. one of the suspects was caught,ing the other three managed to get away. police pulled clothes and shoes out of the suspect's car and collected other evidence for about an hour or so this morning. the officer who was inside that cruiser was taken to the hospital, but just as a precauti. jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: right now patriots' star rob gronkowski is gearing up for back surgery later on today. he'll likely be sidelined for the rest of the season. let's get right out to 7's nicole oliverio in foxborough with reaction from his teammates now. nicole? >> nicole: well, christa, of course teammates are wishing him well, but you know the patriots' motto, you know the next man up, do your job.

he broke his forearm in 2012 and reinjured it in the playoffs. the year before that he suffered an ankle injury in the a.f.c. championship game. clearly he went 100% in the super bowl loss to the giants some this is going to be the third back surgery that gronk has had since college. the team and his family releasing a joint statement saying they're going to focus on his recovery and eventual return to the patriots. we're live at gillette, nicole oliverio, 7news "today in new england." brockton when a murder suspect gets uncooperative with officers. after this scuffle, 18-year-old frantz polynice hid behind a wall in the courtroom. he's pleaded not guilty to murdering his mother. police say he stabbed his mother to death inside of the family's home on merritt avenue. investigators say the 44-year-old victim was stabbed as many as 15 times with a kitchen knife.

also in the house at the time but was able to get away and call neighbors for help. the district attorney says that it's unclear why polynice attacked his mother but he's currently being held without bail. >> christa: a westport senior health official stepping down following that town's animal cruelty scandal. this comes days after residents called for the resignation of all the town's health officials. the departing official admitted to conducting animal inspections on the farm, even though he was in the licensed to do so. he's the first person now to step down since living in deplorable conditions back in july. the trial date has been set for rachelle bond, the mother-of-murdered toddler bella bond. her trial is set to start february 22nd. prosecutors say bond's boyfriend is the one who killed bella, and the pair allegedly disposed of the little girl's body, which was later found on deer island last year. >> kris: the convicted shoe bomber is asking a federal judge to declare him bankrupt.

richard reid wrote a handwritten note saying he with cannot pay more than $250,000 he was fined. he was sentenced to life in prison after trying to light his boots that were packed with explosives on board a flight. that flight had to be diverted to logan after passengers were able to subdue him. >> christa: an armed robber behind bars after an intense hostage situation inside a bank in jacksonville, florida. police say the 23-year-old threatened to kill 11 people inside the bank if police did not bring him money. swat teams were able to storm inside after two hostages who were hiding in the bank tried to escape and distractedded the gunman. >> kris: the national weather service has confirmed four tornadoes hit the atlanta area wednesday afternoon. surveillance video is what you're looking at here showing the strength of that storm system. strong winds knocked down trees and this tree in particular, the one you'll see in this video, landed on a school. no injuries fortunately were reported. >> christa: and a fan foul at

it truly was a terrible discovery right here along the merrimack river, a person out walking their dog, discovered this decapitated body, the head found nearby. >> a horrible discovery along a riverbank in lawrence, the essex county district attorney says a man decapitated's body was found, and now a criminal investigation is under way. crime scene investigators combed the area along the merrimack river right off mccabe court. it all started thursday afternoon when the d.a. says a woman out walking her dog called 911 after coming across the body. investigators left with bags of evidence and the medical examiner will work to identify the body and exactly how this man died. the d.a. says foul play is suspected. and the district attorney's office says they will not speculate on the identity of

in east boston the donald mckay school has a lot of heart, and one student in particular is going above and beyond to help people in need. so is this the entire school or just sixth grade? >> sixth grade. >> christa: awesome. today we're here to honor a young woman in the sixth grade who has done so much work to help the people of ecuador recover from the earthquake. you probably all know who i'm talking about. her name is rachel feliz. rachel feliz is a student with a vision. when ecuador was rocked by earthquakes in april, rachel wanted to do something. earthquakes, and i thought that was pretty bad. i wanted to help them, because i saw pictures of kids getting stuck under buildings or kids being hurt. >> christa: so rachel and her friends drew up posters, and they collected clothes and sent them to earthquake survivors with the help of the red cross. >> because it makes me happy to help others. >> she came to me not only with the idea, but all the plans. she had everything written out.

two people in that car died on the scene. a third person survived and is being treated at boston medical center. >> christa: happening now, the search for suspects is on up in lowell after a store gets robbed by two men. and those suspect, as you see there, were carrying a long gun and they were able to get away with crash. frightening scene. let's go to nancy chen with more. >> christa: that store on con core street was robbed wednesday night. customers there have never heard >> this surveillance video shows two armed robbers breaking into a liquor store with guns drawn. one robber in a black-and-white scream mask moves toward the register to demand cash. the other suspect wearing a black mask waves around a sawed-off shotgun and points it at another employee, pushing him back. >> i have never seen anything like that in my entire life ever over here. this is a safe neighborhood.

robbers did get away with some cash. >> this is crazy. too many weapons. too many weapon, too many drugs, fentanyl, everything. >> less than an hour later, another clerk saw two men dressed in black wearing white "scream" masks by a dumpster. investigators believe they are the same two suspects. residents of the neighborhood say the men who run the liquor store are good people who don't deserve this. >> these are my friends. >> i know the g time. that's ridiculous. >> the liquor store is back open now, but police are searching for those two suspects. in the control room, nancy chen, 7news "today in new england." >> kris: more news today, courtroom dr. that in brockton when a murder suspect gets uncooperative with officers. after that little scuffle, 18-year-old frantz polynice hid behind a wall in the courtroom during that first court appearance. he plead not guilty the murdering his mother.

home on merritt avenue wednesday afternoon. they say the 44-year-old was stabbed up to 15 times with a kitchen knife. the suspect's grandmother was also in the house at the time but was able to get away and call neighbors for help. the d.a. says it's unclear still why polynice attacked his mother. he's currently being held without bail. >> christa: also this morning, a westport town health officials stepping down after an animal cruelty scandal. the departing firm admitted to conducting animal inspections on a licensed to do so. he's now the first person to step down after investigators found more than 1,000 animals living in deplorable conditions back in july. state lawmakers have now approved new safety rules for duck boats. the measure requires all duck boat operators to separate responsibilities between driving and being a tour guide. the company behind the popular tourist atrack already implemented changes on its own after an april accident where a 28-year-old woman was killed

he was taken to the hospital. >> christa: three suspects are out there on the scene right now. let's go live to the scene and jennifer eagan. >> jennifer: christa, this morning the search continues for those other people who ran from the scene. this happened around 1:30 at the intersection of parker street and ruggles street. as you mention, that cruiser belonged to the wentworth police department. the officer who was inside at the time was taken to the hospital by boston e.m.s. just as a precaution, though. minutes earlier there had been a all right of shots fired in this area and a car lng police say the car that hit the wentworth police cruiser matched the description of the car related to the report of shots fired. according to police, there were four people inside that car. they ran from the car after it collided with the wentworth cruiser. one of the suspects was caught. the other three got away, though. police pulled clothes and shoes out of the suspect's car and collected evidence for about an hour or so overnight. again the officer who was inside that wentworth police cruiser was taken to the hospital. he was expected to be okay, though.

jennifer eagan, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: on to some breaking news out of milton right now. two people have died after a car slammed into a tree and then burst into flames. this was on brurk hill road at cheever street. a third person inside the car did manage to survive and is now being treated at boston medical center. it's not clear exactly what led up to that crash. >> christa: police say man has been shot inside of a car in dorchester suffering severe injuries and had to be taken to the hospital. this all happened on devin and normandy streets. >> chris gronkowski is set for surgery after his latest back injury. this one will have gronk sidelined for a while, possibly the rest of the season. let's head out live to 7's nicole oliverio at gillette stadium with more reaction for us. >> nicole: i think when fans saw gronk leave the field on sunday, they weren't sure what it happened because it wasn't a big hit. now we know he will be undergoing surgery. that means he's likely going to be out for the rest of the season. and that lynn cloudy the

to have surgery for a herniated disc. it will be the third time he's had this surgery since college. so that means tight end martellus bennett is going to be the one taking his place. >> martellus, does your job change appreciably when gronk is not on the field? >> no, i've been doing the same thing all year. my job is my job. >> there's a lot of weapons on this team. we play well together. ho going to go out there and play with whoever it is. >> of course, gronk has had a number of serious injuries during his career with the pats inch 2013 he was out for the rest of the season after he tore ligaments in his left knee, that happening in a game against cleveland. he also broke his forearm in 2012 and reinjured it in the playoffs. the year before that he suffered an ankle injury in the a.f.c. championship game and clearly wasn't 100% in the super bowl loss to the giants.

evidence, and the medical examiner will work to identify the body and exactly how this man died. the d.a. says foul play is suspected. as for the identity of the body, all the d.a. will tell us is that it's the body of a man. the d.a. says they will not speculate on the identity until after they hear from the medical examiner's office. live this morning in lawrence, victoria warren, 7news "today in new england." >> christa: now to a story you'll see on just one station. officials are looking for the of hate at an elementary school in brookline. school officials do say they believe it was a student who drew a swastika on a chalkboard inside a classroom at lincoln elementary school last weekend. in a statement, the superintendent of brookline schools said this: this type of incident is reflective of a disturbing normalization of hate speech and symbols. but the speech and these symbols are not reflective of who we are as a community in the public
