3 we're back with a developing story... 3 tonight an upstate community is mourning the loss of this little girl...the coroner says sophia rhodes died tonight at the augusta burn center from smoke inhalation...she was hurt in a house fire in honea path this morning. 3 earlier this afternoon we spoke with neighbors who knew sophia--who say she was a light in the community... community...friends say the family now needs prayers and donations...fox carolinas andrew reeser joins us now with more. 3 3 3 residents on green street in honea path know 5 year old sophia rhodes as a ray of light in their neighborhood. 3 3 3 sophia was a great kid, full of life full of spunk uh curious, asking lots of questions, made her way over to the house daily to play with the girls.neighbor krista overby says the fire that ripped through sophia's family home sunday night... started around 10:30.when fire crews responded...sophia rhodes was

at their church.that's the first assembly of god in honea path. 3 happening now... 3 a poem - written by a now former a-p literature teacher at easley high school - is creating quite a stir. stir.we got a copy of a small part of it... sent to us by a concerned parent.that parents says it includes inappropriate language that describes a sexual encounter.the author and teacher- greg fish - tells us it was all part of his poetry roundtable class, held once a month, off campus -for a-p seniors.and mr fish says - the controversial poem was never read out loud. 3 now- many of his current and former students say one poem does not define their teacher - 3 and they are speaking out in support of him - hoping their efforts get him back into the classroom. classroom.fox carolina's sarah danik is live for us in easley - sarah - what are they doing?

making t-shirts reading "fight for fish" .... sharing online petitions - and they've even created a facebook page "fight for fish".we spoke with greg fish over the phone, but he declined an on camera interview - telling us the voice of his student's is more important than his ...and that he is overwhelmed by their support. 3 3 3 the controversy surrounding a poem, written by easley high school english teacher greg fish - started here - during a monthly class held at a local cafe.sarah price, a senior at easley high school is part of the class.she says she saw the poem, but wasn 't offended. offended.(23:09:57 it's always been a very open class - we have poetry roundtable for students to express themselves and be free in what they write and not be judged for it and it is an ap class and college level course with 17 and 18 year olds in the class - so it was a shock for this to happen 23:10:13 and she doesen't think it should be make or break for a man she says is an incredible teacher.(23:12:53 i

lose fish and then we'll lose other r achers who really genuinly care about students 22:56:04 ) 3 when we first reported this story at 4pm, the pickens county school district did not want to go on camrera for an interview, but issued a statement, saying that mr. fish was placed on leave and would not be returning to the school or classroom.earlier tonight - they issued an updated statement, saying: saying:on february 26, the school district accepted the resignation of mr. greg fish, an english teacher at easley high school. mr. fish will assist the teachers who will instruct his classes for the remainder of the year, although he will not be returning to the school or the classroom. on tuesday, students will be expected to attend their classes and comport themselves in a respectful manner. manner.we are aware that some students may be planning a "sit-in" in response to this issue. the administration will handle any disruptions caused by a sit-in through normal procedures and policies. the primary focus at easley high will continue to be the education and welfare of their students

3 it's out of greenville county. that's where officers say they're on scene at brook haven apartments- after a man showed up a the hosptial with a gunshot wound. officers tell us, the man was shot in the back around 9:15 tonight.the victim told authorities he was shot by an unknown suspect. right now officers aren't looking for anyone.we're told that he is expected to be o-k. 3 remember to stay with fox- carolinawe'll have continuing coverage both on air and online as we get more information. 3 we're covering our counties at ten.... 3 a two-county chase--ends in tragedy for an upstate man who was just on his way to work-- work--that's what happened to stephen burnett--and only on fox tonight his family is speaking about what happened. happened.greenville county

pull over dexter reeves earlier this month--instead-- he led deputies on a chase into anderson county--it ended when reeves collided with the pick up truck burnett was driving to work. the 62-year-old died on scene and now his death has been ruled a homicide. and tonight burnett's family says although they are still searching for answers...wondering why the chase even happened...they are thankful for the support they've received. 3 3 3 "we've had such an outpouring from the community, the powdersville community. it's daily, it's constant. it just makes you feel good to know that powdersville is a really caring community and there's a lot of great people here who love this family. and that's what's important. they also want some answers as to what happened and what's going on." 3 the highway patrol is investigating the crash and have not released what charges reeves may face in connection to the deadly wreck. wreck.reeves is being held without bond on n ltiple past

3 the family thinks the small children in the home were playing with a candle.by the time - the disabled aunt made it to the room - there was already a fire.and it grew out of control. 3 this home is destroyed - each room either burned or smoke and water damaged.despite losing everything they owned. they know they are blessed to be alive and have made it out of the fire safely.the elderly and disabled woman who was with the kids says she had a hard time getting out.but says the children listened and ran out of the house.the children's mother was away from home when the fire started.but was emotional when she got the call from her aunt. at this point - the family has nothing but what you see in this small hotel room. 3 3 3 3 "it was very scary because i did have small children there and i knew i had to get them to safety. that was my one main concern was getting them out. and as we went down the

3 we have new information tonight-- 3 on a deadly crash that claimed the lives of four u-s-c upstate student athletes.the coroner says the driver... and others in the car had been drinking.james campbell, josh lee, mills sproull, and sarah vande berg were killed after their car hit a tree in spartanburg county in october of last year.after months of push-back .. the spartanburg county coroner released toxicology results today. 3 tonight, we are hearing from josh lee's girlfriend and some of the parents of these four students...about how they feel is released. 3 fox carolina's rebecca atkins has been looking into the details and she's live outside usc upstate with more on what family and friends have to say as well as the coroner.

3 cody and diana, as you can imagine, today was not an easy day for these families. several of them did not want the toxicology or autopsy results released at all. the coroner sought an attorney general opinion if he could release the information that he's had since november. that decision was ruled that those results are not considered confidential medical records when it comes to the coroner's office. 3 3 3 3 "go josh!!" josh lee was in the prime of his life, just like his three friends, all usc upstate students that died in a tragic accident last year. 3 3 "it's hard, it's definitely hard without him, i mean he had talks of proposing after i graduate in may so i think that's been one of the hardest parts to lose him."courtney reilly was josh's girlfriend. she also knew, james campbell, sarah vande burg and mills sproul who were in that car. she doesn't want the blame to fall on james campbell who she says was driving the car. 3 3 "even though there was a mistake that happened, you can't determine somebody on

remembered as well as all of them for the people that they were, not just based off of this accident."in a press conference today, coroner rusty clevenger discussed how alcohol played a role in this accident. 3 3 3 "in this case, indirectly, alcohol was a part of the cause of these young people's deaths."results show that the driver was legally drunk, and two of the passengers had blood alcohol levels above the 0.08 legal level. clevenger says one of the passengers barely had an alcohol level at all. josh lee's mom says that was her son, she released this statement."our hearts are broken and so are the other three group of parents who also lost there child. johnny and i hearts are just broken over the idea of the driver having a dui. if anyone knew josh he was the one to take the keys from his friends or even drive. so all of this just doesn't make sense to us."3 and the mother of james campbell who was driving the car also shared a statement about her son. "james made a horrible choice, but he is a loved child of god and i have no doubt is resting in his arms right now. i am so, so

with them because of this accident, including our own. please know that james is not just this one decision... he is a lifetime of love and joy. thank you to everyone who loves him for continuing to see him in that light." 3 and a spokesperson for usc upstate was also at today's press conference she says the school will never be the same after this accident but she says that now all incoming students are required to take a course on alcohol, she says there are also regular programs where alcohol and substance abuse is discussed. diana? 3 rebecca, this really is such a tragedy for all the families and friends involved and who knew and loved these four students. has anything been done for the students since

3 well just this past weekend, the soccer team at jl mann where james campbell when to high school, they had a ceremony for him and they retired his jersey number, and josh lee's family also has also started a scholarship in his honor. reporting live in spartanburg, rebecca atkins fox carolina the 10 o'clock news. 3 we're back with a fox carolina investigation 3 tonight we are looking at the war against meth in oconee county..since 2013 when sheriff mike crenshaw took over, the numbers are staggering staggeringthat year, there were 358 drug related cases...and 22 meth labs busted up.deputies seized more than a quarter million dollars worth of drugs most of it meth. meth.and in 2014... there were 319 drug arrests and 15 labs were found.1 point 3 million dollars in drugs were taken off the streets.deputies say once again, most of it was

calendar once every four years. that's right, it's a leap year. we checked in with hospitals in spartanburg and greenville to see who welcomed a new member into their family on this unique date. 3 and a few people got married on a leap year because they consider it lucky. 3 fox carolina's shale remien spoke to a wedding official and has been checking in with the courthouse. shale, do you know how many people got married in greenville today? 3 well cody and diana -the courthouse says they can't tell us the exact number of people that got married today. but what they can say is about 18 couples applied for a marriage license.the wedding official i spoke with says many couples consider it good luck to get married on a leap day. we also spoke to a few families who are ecstatic to welcome their child into the world today. 3 3 3 february 29th....it only comes around every four years.and people who were married and had children on leap day can all agree on one thing..... thing....."i'm thrilled, i'm so excited."everyone feels a little bit lucky. upstate couples began a new chapter of their lives together and chose today to be their special day. brenda owens, the wedding woman, married marcus and chareece on a lake venue. venue."they were both kidding around that they both wouldn't have to have a wedding anniversary except for every four years."owens says most couples don't know of legend leap years hold."tradition has it, that in a leap year, a woman is allowed to ask the man to marry her. i don't know if any of my couples has the woman ask but they just thought it would be a fun day to get married." and another baby made his debut into the world at greenville memorial. jay boland says his family wasn't expecting their newborn today. 3 "he was actually due on st. patrick's day, so it came up on us as a surprise."because of the early arrival, they haven't quite picked out a name for their leap year baby.
