7:00 am
good morning. breaking news. a big reversal from the president on the draw down of u.s. troops from afghanistan. the white house announcing it will keep five times more troops than originally planned. what's behind that decision? a computer glitch wiping out access the terror watch list last night, causing lines at airports and worries about a hack. this morning, the story behind the failure. holding vigil. the kardashians, kobe bryant, jesse jackson, all gathering in las vegas as former nba star lamar odom clingingss to life in a coma after being found unconscious at a nevada brothel. >> he's not breathing. >> we will have the latest on his condition. more to the story? she was vilified as the worst aunt ever after suing her nephew
7:01 am
for breaking her wrist in a hug. >> it's an outrage. it's a shame. it's a disgrace. >> did we all jump to conclusions too quickly? she tells her side of the story right here in an exclusive live interview today, thursday, october 15th, 2015. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today," with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. morning, everyone. welcome to "today." it's a thursday morning. we'll be the first to admit we were critical when we heard this story about the aunt who sued her own nephew. >> the tabloid headlines were not kind to jennifer connell. we weighed in on trending yesterday with the tornadicfacts we knew at the time. jennifer connell is here this morning and says there is a different side to the story. >> look who is with her, her
7:02 am
>> interesting to hear what they have to say. let's start with our top story. president obama set to announce this morning he's going to keep a larger than expected force in afghanistan by the end of next year. nbc's pentagon correspondent has the latest on this. what's behind it? >> matt, the president's call to keep more american forces on the ground in afghanistan reflects the new reality there. the fact that the taliban and terrorist threat is once more on the rise. there are currently 9,800 american forces in afghanistan. the president wanted to cut that number to 1,000 by the end of next year. because of the increased threat from the cal bantaliban, al qaeda and even isis, the president agreed to keep 5,500 troops in afghanistan to work with the afghan military and, in fact, to conduct counter-terrorism missions. the fact here is that the afghan military was just not up to this fight alone.
7:03 am
dramatically home a few weeks ago when the taliban launched a deadly attack and seized the city of kunduz in noertrther afghanistan. >> any new information on the deadly air strike against the doctors without borders hospital there? >> matt, we're told b by military officials that the preliminary investigation has shown that american forces on the ground and in the air apparently failed to follow the strict rules of engagement. and that a conversation in the ac 130 gun ship, among the crew there, they expressed uncertainty as to whether the air strike was legal. but they launched the strike anyway, matt. >> that'll make headlines, as well. thank you very much. homeland security officials are trying to figure out why the computer system that checks airline passengers against the terror watch lists failed last night. it caused delays in some of the busiest airports in america and
7:04 am
fears of hacking. pete williams is following this for us. good morning. >> good morning. federal officials say the system used to check passenger names against the terror watch list and other law enforcement databases was down for over an hour wednesday night because of a technical failure. it slowed down the process of checking passengers arriving in the u.s. on flights from overseas. officials from customs and border protection didn't stop the check-in lines, but they had to use paperless and other procedures, which took longer. officials say the computer system was down for about an hour and a half. when it came back up, lines at airports had grown considerably. passengers vented their frustrations on social media. the failure detected before 7:00 wednesday night was in a mainframe computer. the department of homeland security officials say there's no indication this was anything other than a technical problem. no sign, they say, of hacking. >> what a scare.
7:05 am
pete williams, thank you very much. let's go to politics and the race for the white house. joe biden still not giving any sign as to whether he is going to run. donald trump is sharing his unique take on tuesday night of the democratic debate. we have two reports this morning. let's begin with the white house correspondent, kristen welker. >> supporters of vooptice president biden are waiting for a signal that he'll get in the race. if he was leaning to yes, there should be signs. instead, it seems to be business as usual for vice president biden. >> reporter: if vice president biden is going to run for president, he's not letting on. after skipping the first democratic debate, biden had a typical day at the white house. lunch with the president and a round table discussion where he ignored questions about his future plans. >> i thought they all did well.
7:06 am
contrast to hillary clinton, busy trying to capitalize on her dominant debate performance. is she hoping biden doesn't get in? >> i'm not hoping anything about that. i really respect and admire the vice president. he's been a friend and a colleague of mine for a long time. >> reporter: but clinton's campaign chairman told andrea mitchell it's now time for biden to decide. >> vice president biden wants to enter and compete for the presidency, then it's time he make that decision. >> reporter: sources close to the vice president say a decision is likely coming soon and the debate might not be the deciding factor, but rather whether biden thinks he can win. even republican insiders agree on that. >> there has to be a consensus within the democratic party she can't win a general election in order for biden to enter the race comfortably. that doesn't exist today. >> reporter: still, some of biden's supporters aren't giving up. >> i'm very confident if he decides to get in, there would not only be the money and staff
7:07 am
the early states. >> biden will likely announce his decision within a week to ten days. he has another typical day at the white house, while clinton will be courting latino voters in san antonio. >> there was some thought that because of perceived weakness in hillary clinton's campaign, some democrats might beg joe biden to get into the race. after the debate, is there a possibility that if he does decide to jump in, he could face backlash? >> look, matt, he could face some initial backlash. the reality is you have a lot of democrats saying the more competitive the primary race is, the better. ultimately, it could make secretary clinton a stronger general election candidate if biden were to get into the race. she'd have a tougher fight to get to the finish line. again, i think the broader sense, matt, among all democrats is it's time for him to decide, even amongst his supporters.
7:08 am
>> thank you. kristen welker at the white house. >> is the republican front runner changing his tactics and tone in taking on his rivals? katie, good morning. >> good morning. the gop front runner is still ahead, but with ben carson creeping in, signs he might be changing his tone, as his daughter speaks out about the campaign for the first time. >> reporter: donald trump rallying supporters in richmond, virginia, wednesday night, dissecting hillary clinton and bernie sanders' performance in the first democratic debate. >> the poor woman, she's got to give everything away because this maniac standing on her right is giving everything away. so she's following. >> reporter: trump the boasting big leads in the primary states of south carolina and nevada. but a new poll of republicans nationwide shows ben carson closing the gap. >> why do you think he's doing so well? >> i don't know. he's a nice person. i don't really know why he's doing well. i mean, i will bring america to a new level.
7:09 am
ben is, you know, it's not his thing, but he certainly seems to be resonating. >> reporter: for a candidate not known for second guessing himself, the billionaire does admit -- >> i think i could be, perhaps, a little bit -- i can watch my words a little bit. maybe will a little more politically correct. >> reporter: at a fortune magazine forum, trump's daughter says his candor is a good thing. >> he is really changing the dialogue, and he's really dis disrupting the process in a powerful way. i'm proud of him. >> reporter: she seemed to echo her father as the campaign tried to get female voters. >> he'd be amazing for women in the country. i'll leave policy to him, but i can speak from my vantage point as a child and also from my vantage point as a colleague and somebody who works for him. >> reporter: all this as trump prepares for his second stint
7:10 am
hosting "saturday night live" in three weeks. >> ready for "snl"? >> it'll be great. >> any impressions? what about jeb? do you have an impression of him? >> no. well, i don't want to be wise. i was going to fall asleep on the chair, but i didn't want to do that. >> you can see he's very much still donald trump. what's fascinating about this latest sit down was how measured he was, especially with ben carson. carson has been the nice guy in the race and he can't attack him or insult him. how he's going to handle him creeping up in the polls will be interesting. he is leading by so much in the early states, and that's what matters right now. >> we've also been saying his daughter is a real asset to him. she's an impressive young lady. >> we ask when we'll see her on the trail and they say soon. as you sigh, and they see, as well, she's an impressive woman. >> absolutely. thank you so much. by the way, donald trump will be our guest for a town hall meeting with new hampshire
7:11 am
good morning to natalie for the latest tonon the crisis in middle east. >> israel is on high alert following more deadly violence on wednesday. bill is in jerusalem. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, natalie. hours after i talked to you all here yesterday, a palestinian man was shot dead right there after trying to stab israeli police. two hours later, another similar killing. the fear is that these attacks are growing more and more frequent and a warning to you all, some people may find some of these pictures rather disturbing. >> reporter: a palestinian prepares to be searched when, suddenly, another in combat clothes sprints past our camera and is shot down in gunfire. he was 19, a knife in his hand. the police say this man posed a deadly threat, running with a
7:12 am
knife at a security guard, who was escorting a family. in your view, there was no doubt, he was intending to kill. >> no doubt. he tried to stab the police officer. >> reporter: for some palestinians, he's a hero. they glorify the stabbing attacks on social media. the #intifada, or uprising of knives, tweeted more than 11,000 times in five days. israel is condemning videos it claims teach palestinians how to stab. video games featuring attacks, labeling them incitement to murder. >> it's a brainwashing campaign, which is being carried out by extremists. >> reporter: more roadblocks, more police, more searches. the police are blocking whole neighborhoods, but this alone won't stop the stabbings, and it won't block palestinians online from raging against israel and calling for more attacks. there's no sign of the viral videos or the violence fading
7:13 am
soon. >> well, this area and many like it in jerusalem swamped with police, they're hoping to smother the violence with sheer numbers. most of the violence carried out by so-called lone wolves. often young people with no affiliations to terrorist groups. much like we've seen in the united states. the fear is this violence is gaining a momentum of its own. natalie? >> it sure is. thank you, bill. fantasy sports websites that advertise cash pricezes are the subject of an fbi investigation. it came after the use of insider information was questioned by employees. draft kings and fan duel acknowledged people play and win money on the sites. comcast, a company of nbc universal, has invested in fan duel.
7:14 am
a camera captured a crash on a freeway wednesday, east of lasos angeles. the truck swerves and hits a car. the truck then flies over the embankment and landed in a car dealership. one witness thinks that road rage perhaps was to blame. the drive of the truck was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. now to baseball play offaction and the blue jays moving on to the american league championship series after one of the wildest innings in playoff baseball history. blue jays taking on the texas rangers. let's start at the top of the seventh inning. game tied at two. martin tries to throw the ball back to the pitcher, but it hits the bat of shin-soo choo. another player comes in to score and it gives texas the lead. there was confusion over the rules and the game was delayed while the umpires sorted it out. angry fans threw beer cans on the field.
7:15 am
back to the action. bottom of the seventh, the rangers made three straight errors, loading the bases. eventually, that led to this. bar the home run shot. the blue jays taking a 6-3 lead, and they hold on for the win. kansas city royals advancing to the alcs by beating the astros, 7-2. exciting stuff. >> the ball hit the bat of who? >> shin-soo choo. >> very impressive. >> thank you. time for a check of the weather. we find al in new orleans this morning. good morning. >> hey, guys. good morning. we're at one of the great spots in this country, the national world war ii museum. i was here last night to honor african-american veterans who finally got their medals of honor from world war ii. we'll tell you more about it in a bit. let me also tell you about big changes coming in the weather.

7:19 am
cut-rate pricing and dealing as amazon and walmart face off. for walmart, the stakes are high. on wednesday, the company paid the price for surprising wall street with bad earnings forecasts through 2018. in one day, the stock lost 10%. for the year so far, down 29%. >> surprised? shocked? the decline for the largest retailer in the world's stock was stunning to me. >> reporter: on cnbc late wednesday, walmart's ceo blamed part of the problem on a pay raise the company announced earlier this year. >> so you know in february, we announced a two-step wage increase. we moved the minimum start rate to $9 this year and $10 next year. >> reporter: make no mistake, the internet is a huge threat, as more customers shop online, avoiding lines and traffic jams. with 5,000 stores, walmart used to be the country's biggest retailer. not anymore.
7:20 am
today, it's amazon.com. now as holiday shopping prepares to kick off, the competition could mean customers will be the biggest winners, with the biggest retailers online and on main street expected to slash prices. >> not only is walmart competing with amazon to get that online customer, they're also competing with amazon to get that customer that wants the lowest price overall, every day, 365 days a year. >> millennial shoppers are expected to spend $200 billion by 2017 on their mobile devices and online. that could mean some big names, retailers, won't survive. that is why walmart is investing in their technology to compete online. also, look for big upgrades in their stores in your neighborhood. more paint, cleaning up the whole thing. they're trying to go higher end. back to you. >> tom costello, interesting story. >> it really is. >> sign of the times.

new york tabloids crowned her the antichrist. jennifer connell garnered headlines when the world found out she was suing her nephew for hugging her too hard. the jury took 25 minutes to rule against connell's lawsuit, but she was mocked for longer than that. >> it's an outrage, a shame, a disgrace. >> she told the court, i was at a party and it was difficult to hold my hors d'oeuvre plate. the horrible. >> one can assume she'll be using her good hand to wave good-bye to that family relationship. >> we weighed in on the story. >> it looks terrible. >> not her best day. >> no. >> suing four years later. >> that's the only thing. >> awful. >> connell says the case was the only feasible way to have homeowners insurance cover her medical bills. jennifer connell and sean tarala are here this morning. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> what a 24 hours it has been for both of you.
7:38 am
as we said, we were hard on you on this show, as well. why did you want to come on and speak? what did you want people to understand? >> that we love each other very much, and that this was simply a case of formality with an insurance claim. >> sean, i know you adore your aunt. it was important for you to be here today. what did you want to say? >> she would never do anything to hurt the family or myself. and she loves us. >> what's it been like, jennifer? you saw that. i know you've seen the headlines and i'm sure friends have been calling. to suddenly be in the center of something that was so tough on me. >> it was a complete shock to me. it was amazing how, you know, i walked into court that morning and walked out all over social media.
7:39 am
suddenly was getting calls, don't look at the internet. don't turn on the television. it was sort of heartbreaking and really painful but, also, like walking into a film of someone else's life. i hadn't been briefed. i've been in shock since that happened. >> did you see it, sean, some of this stuff? how did you feel about it? >> i felt like everybody was saying stuff that they didn't know know, and they didn't -- just saying stuff they didn't know. >> help people understand, jennifer. i mean, i'm sure you'd be the first to admit that when you hear about someone suing their own nephew because he hugged you too hard, you know, people are going to think, well, that sounds terrible. what was this all about? >> i have to tell you that it sounded terrible to me from the very beginning.
7:40 am
this, i don't understand why -- you know, i would never want to sue sean, but i'm no legal expert, but as i understand it, in connecticut, it's not possible to name an insurance company in a suit of a homeowners insurance case. an individual has to be named. in this case, because sean and i had this fall together, i was informed that we had -- sean had to be named. i was never comfortable with that. but it was explained to me that it's just a technicality. or just sort of the way the language had to be used, or the way the case had to be framed. >> you have a stack of medical bills, and you were looking for the homeowners insurance policy to pay for it. it sounds like you had to say, okay, there was negligence at the home and that triggered the homeowners policy. is that the way you understood it? >> that's how i understood it, yes. >> now looking at at everything
7:41 am
that's happened, not only what you've gone through and how people perceived this case, but also the fact that this jury heard the case and came back 25 minutes later and did not award you the damages you sought, do you have any regrets about it? do you feel like, hey, maybe i didn't get good legal advice? how do you feel about this experience? >> i'm still in shock, but it's not been a pleasant experience since the beginning, of course. i am just confused. you know, i just feel like, perhaps, it's the way the legal system is set up, so that the insurance companies aren't necessarily in the spotlight for stepping up and taking responsibility for handling claims on properties. >> sean, what do you want people
7:42 am
to know about your aunt? >> that i love her and she loves me. >> well, it's good to have both of you here. i think it's a good lesson for everybody, that you think you know a story, but you never know what's really going on behind it. we appreciate both of you for being here. >> thank you very much. >> thank you. >> jennifer connell and sean tarala, thank you so much. coming up, a former waiter reveals the most annoying things
