popular wine country. nbc's keir responsesimmons is with us. this is all of. what can you tell us about it. >> reporter: good morning. the french are waking up to a tragedy here, a head-on collision between a bus and a truck that became a gigantic blaze, according to witnesses, and on board the bus was a group of retirees. it happened at 7:30 this morning french time overnight your time, and as we speaker french leaders, including the prime minister, are heading to the scene. the horrifying remains of the bus still smoking, a burned out shell where 42 people died. the worst accident in france for over 30 years, a collision with a truck carrying lumber on a remote road near the famed wine country of bordeaux. rescue teams airlifted the injured to the hospital and nine escaped alive according to reports. survivors seen wrapped in foil blank totes keep warm. relatives embracing in shock,

and reports say all of the passengers killed were members of a retirement group on a one-day tour. the french president said this morning he was plunged into sadness by the tragedy and promised a full investigation. the road where the accident happened said to be notoriously dangerous. now it has taken the lives of at least 422 who despite the efforts of 60 firefighters could not be saved. and the french interior ministry is warngt number of dead may climb. four of the injured are in serious condition and two with head traumas, two with serious burns, and savannah and carson, just to understand the impact of this. it's reported only 700 people live in the village where many of the elderly passengers come from, so everyone there will know someone who died. >> that's so sad. key keir simmons with the late on this breaking story. thanks very much. hurricane patricia now the strongest storm ever measured on the planet and bearing down on the mexico coast where people

are being urged to prepare for the worst case scenario. >> last year hurricane odile caused billions of dollars in damage and this could be much worse and this storm will also affect the texas-louisiana gulf coastline. here's what we know. over 200-mile-per-hour winds. if they makes landfall, and we expect it will, somewhere around the puerto vallarta area, right now 245 miles south of puerto vallarta and 200-mile-per-hour winds. moving quickly at north northwest at 12 miles per hour. this will be the first category 5 storm to hit the pacific mexican coast at 205 miles per hour. it makes landfall by friday afternoon. it starts to lose its strength, but that moisture also makes its way into texas, and so we are going to be looking right now at very serious conditions. flash flood watches already in effect today for much of texas into early next week. moisture from the gulf and moisture from hurricane patricia going to both affect, and we've got hurricane coastal flood watches and warnings from texas

rip currents, coastal flooding. today north central texas is in the bullseye. upwards of five inches of rain for waco. tomorrow more of the same, but it starts to spread into louisiana. significant flooding from houston, austin and corpus christi, texas, and then as we move into sunday the heavy rain continues. guys, by the time we get to monday, were could be talking a foot to a foot and a half of rain in parts of texas. flash flooding is going to be catastrophic. we are going to be watching this all weekend long. >> wow. a lot going on in your department. check back in an minute. to politics and hillary clinton's testimony on benghazi. the highly anticipated meeting went on longer than expected. 11 hours in all and didn't wrap up until 9:00 last night. republicans grilled the secretary of state over the attack and was more done to protect diplomats overseas and nbc's andrea mitchell watched it all. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, house republicans and

looking at these things on her fall calendar, oh, waiting for joe biden to decide, my first debate next to surging bernie sanders and this benghazi hearing and sort of had a call gone take me away moment. the truth is and what republicans need to process now is she has not only survived all of those pretty big tasks, she's proven herself an incredibly tranquil and formidable presidential candidate. >> a benchmark on her calendar doing well in the first debate, vp out of the race and did she do enough to get this e-mail issue behind her? >> i think so and the thing we have to keep in mind she walked into this with a slight advantage because of all the comments by several republicans over the last few weeks that really made this look like a political inquisition more than a fact-finding venture, so i think in that setting she could go in there and not have one of those moments where she said what difference does it make, and one thing we're reminded of yesterday in these settings,

adversarial settings, a debate, thing like that, hillary clinton is really quite good. thinking back to the 2008 campaign. she had 25 debates or something against barack obama. i know she lost that race to barack obama, but when you think back to those debates she won just about every one of them. the thing that's always been the problem for her when she has that one moment where she trips up it becomes big and there was no big moment where she tripped up yesterday. >> let's pretend this person exists in the world. they are neutral, they have no preconceived political positions. they wanted to go into this hearing and learn something about benghazi and who was to blame. what do we take away from the hearing? >> that's the thing. the republicans needed to produce some sort of new information, some sort of new revelation, some sort of new way of looking at this the that with a cast doubt on the role that hillary clinton played. i didn't hear that come out yesterday. the one problem though that hillary clinton still has i think is while you look at these polls and people say i'm tired of hearing about the e-mails, i think she only did this for convenience, if you ask people do you think she's being honest about the e-mails they still say no so that issue of honesty still lingers for her.

u.s. and allied kurdish forces took off in five helicopters heading to an isis prison on the outskirts of the town. u.s. officials say the prisoners were about to be executed, mass graves already dug. american forces manned the perimeter. allied kurdish fighters stormed in, but met heavy resistance. then, nbc news has learned one wave of americans followed by a second moved in to help, worried their allies or the hostages would be killed, but isis managed to shoot one american commando described by u.s. officials as selfless and heroic and whose actions saved lives. he was the first american to die in combat in iraq in four years. and questions are being raised, why are so-called advisers now involved in close combat? >> in that support role they are allowed to defend themselves and

this morning on "today food can the "we're savoring the fall hart vest with some of our favorite dishes, one of mine is crispy apple cobbler, perfect dessert for the cool weather and like to add a special spice to kick it up even more. do you have any idea what the special spice is? >> all spice but here we go. apple, sugar, four spices, apple butter, flour, sugar and salt. take any apples that you pick. i like tarter apples like granny smith or something like that. you're going to core it and chop it up into chunks, three-quarter inch chunks. i don't even peel it because i like it nice and -- adds a little something to it.
