candidate martin o'malley is far behind in the polls and giving us his sharpest criticism yet against hillary clinton. plus governor terry branstad tells us what's behind ben carson's surge and whether jeb bush's

us when clinton seem to downplay the problems in the ba and how she is different from two of his other bosses and in this morning's quick fix, how much you need to make before the presidential candidate would want to raise your taxes. first martin o'malley who is way down in the democratic presidential polls but he is coming harder than ever at hillary clinton. i asked him as the candidates how does he balance criticizing the fellow candidate without going too far. >> i think by campaigning the iowa way i think the people of iowa know what the rhythm of their their race and their decision process is, and as i have followed this over the years it seems the point in the campaign when the caucus goers expect the candidates to draw the contrast, to draw the
9:08 am
comparisons. that opening phase is all about introductions and getting to know this new group of candidates. many times the candidates are known and in my case unknown but now we are at the comparing and contrasting phase. it eight or nine years ago we artie had re: how to base and that helped so we have bit of the truncated process. had the very first debate eight days before the jj. >> so you've got more work did you try to point that out that better that it debates that it would've allowed. >> we sure do. it's been very controlled --dash and i was outspoken about this. but i don't make the rules the rules i am just one candidate and i have to make my best case to the people within them but i believe voters would rather have more debates rather than fewer, but the chair of the dnc when she shrank down the number of dates and postponed the start of the first debate, it is harder
9:09 am
version provision window. over the last hundred days i have visited 43 counties got in gotten onto chair given the talk searched for answers with my neighbors in iowa and i enjoy calm campaigning the iowa way and i think we will be the big surprise on caucus night. >> in your criticism of secretary clinton, you have used this weathervane analogy. that is the pretty serious charge that you are saying essentially she is just watching the wind which whichever way it goes. does that call into question character? what does it say about her few can cite these different positions where you can see those changes? >> i'm not the only one that has seen this. when she was on the skid at saturday night live there were laughing about the fact that she was so late coming to issues where you would think the principle would tell you you needed to leave. the way i've gotten things done is by leading with principled.
9:10 am
secretary clinton sometimes i think confuses leadership with craftiness. anyone can follow poll. many of the things i got done in maryland i got done before there was the broad consensus. there was the time of whether it was marriage equality or whether it was repealing the death penalty, or even when we were pushing for the gun safety legislation. well we had some urban parts of our state we also had some very rural parts of our state and that is what bringing people together is about. the vulnerability comes from leading end from making the different the different case declaration of principle. thomas jefferson said in questions of fashion you should swim with the currents, but on
9:11 am
that is what i have always done. keystone pipeline for example in this age of climate change, she said famously the other night and the debate i didn't have possession on keystone until i had the position of keystone and that is why when about one year ago i said i was against keystone it was because i understood that piping and him from canada from canada we help our environment and the best national interest of our company and that is what people are looking for now in our parties and that's not someone who has been straight up and honest with us and tells us what we need to do in order to give our kids are better and more secure future.
9:12 am
can universal background checks, banning assault weapons and being able to see sue gun manufacturers after gun related incidents. those are some of the changes martin o'malley wants to make. i asked him why gun-control advocates like president obama could not get congress to pass gun-control measures why o'malley says he could. >> i think a lot of politicians have been very much intimidated by the national rifle association people and. and their lobbying power. they are very aggressive. their goal has one overriding thing and that is to push as many gun sales as they possibly can, regardless of the cost in human life but we have been witness to it in my own state's governor after the slaughter of the innocent in connecticut, we had to barry frank very frank
9:13 am
and open discussion including with those who value their hunting traditions and privileges that we are sure them that nothing we do in this bill would infringe in any way on their ability to hunt and we were able to get it done. it wasn't easy. i faced a lot of opposition in my own party. i had to go pursuing the legislators overnight. i had to get them to open their minds to the truth that we need to do it better job of this. background check of ban on assault weapons and eliminating of magazines. all of that stuff is important but if we can do it on the national level and push back on what a lot of people are trafficking guns which isn't even in crime. >> but we have had such high profile mass murders over these last couple of years especially, you cited a few of those columbine and others, we are still not seeing it happen so why would it be any different if you get in their?
9:14 am
>> because you can't give up. one of the things i've learned and i'm the only candidate and the three candidate field that has executive experience is that you cannot give up. the efforts we pushed in maryland was not the first time we tried. we failed in 20 oh three but you have to keep pushing. you have to be relentless. whether it was the three times it took us to posh pass marriage equality or two or three times before we repeal the death penalty, you don't give up. pollsters and political people will say it better try again or it will be bad for you, politically people will think you can't get things done but i've found the only way i've been successful is by never relenting and by calling the legislators on both parties because you never know.
9:15 am
and we do reach. >> o'malley stepped aside for now but he will come back for
9:16 am
when we come back, john podesta john podesta is along time democratic competent and now he is the national chair for hillary clinton's campaign. has faced criticism for the past week you recall the va system had received some bipartisan some bipartisan criticism raising months and months for
9:17 am
inaudible >> clinton has taken criticism last week for first thing the problems of the veteran administration were not widespread. you will recall the va system had received bipartisan criticism from making veterans wait months and months for much-needed care and top officials lying about how long those veterans waited. the campaign went back track when backtrack to comments from clinton and then agreed the problems were systemic. i asked podesta how she could've made that statement in the first place. >> i think what she was saying was that if you get into this system there's a lot of action by veterans in the va system so we didn't shouldn't dismantle its, privatize the whole system so we need to address and correct systems where that these where they exist.
9:18 am
systemic problem is in some of the hospitals themselves and overall. i think secretary mcdonnell is trying to address that particularly with respect to the schedule to get access to not be left out of the system but i think once veterans get into care in the system, than there is the higher level of satisfaction and particularly in the arizona phenomenon where they took up big overturned arrant will left led to secretary shim seki's resignation or problems of being unable to react to the system and i think that is what she was trying to draw let's lets fix those problems but let's not undermine and throw the whole system out and go to just about your privatized system. >> you know some of the supporters of bernie sanders are riled up about something the secretary said of jefferson
9:19 am
jackson when she was talking about gun gun-control and shouting. they're wondering if she was trying to play something implying that the sanders was saying something sexist toward her and he sang that wasn't my point. is that getting misconstrued in the translation? >> i think what she was saying when she said at the jefferson jackson dinner was that she she's not going to be silenced on issues of gun safety and reducing gun violence. >> but she works that woman line in their there and surely set it for reason. >> i think there's you know bernie can explain why he said to her that she shouldn't be shouting about it. i think o'malley also at the debate was engaged in the debate on that, but i think that was intended to make it clear. >> he also said that at the daydreaming? >> thies and at the debate when
9:20 am
they did their exchange on gun violence and the basic facts which he voted against the brady bill five times and voted to give the money to the gun industry. that is the legitimate debate, and i think that for him to say that she should quiet up was something that he has to deal with. i don't think we are trying to level any charge of the van she won't other than she won't be silenced, and i think she is going to continue to press forward with that case and make the argument she won't be intimidated and she won't be silenced and she is going to keep bringing this issue back in front of the voters, both here in iowa and across the country. >> because of the nature of the jobs you have held in your life, you get to know some of these folks are far different level than most iowans could experience. you worked for bill clinton and now you work for hillary clinton.
9:21 am
>> and for barack obama. >> the first comparison i want to do is clinton versus clinton. what are their differences as the leader? >> i think that look, they bring different skills and different experiences. i think the thing i would say about hillary is what is kind of the throughput in her career and her campaign is her tenacity, or willingness to get back up even when she has been pushed back. for example, when we worked together in the white house and she tried to get health care reform done for the whole country and it failed, she went right back and really was the driving force to get children's health programs in place that now covers 8 million kids across the country. that has been what she has always been about. she fights on behalf of women, on behalf of families, on behalf
9:22 am
she doesn't give up. president clinton has of wide ranging mind. he also knows something about everything from sports to popular culture to just the little bit of everything it is fascinated by everything. >> did you ever play trivial pursuit with the guy? >> you would get slaughtered. that isn't even like in the realm of the fair fight even if you are able to call of friend you would just get slaughtered by him but they have complementary but different kinds of personalities. i have really loved working for both of them. i knew him a lot longer. i originally met him in 1970 working on the campaign campaign together. >> so president obama and he works for him also so compare him to hillary clinton. >> president obama is like one of the --dash i just had her
9:23 am
he is extremely disciplined, confident, he takes his time but when he makes his decision he just powers forward with the great ability to try to find what the right solution is and then move forward. so i obviously my portfolio there was on climate change and clean energy, and i think that his determination and the second term when i worked for him to just make progress is really amazing and it was across the board.
9:24 am
and he's got comes carson. the car that i was new republican front-runner.
9:25 am
i asked governor branstad. >> this is aviary volatile situation and they very volatile situation and i think there is still along time until february 1st. i wouldn't be surprised if we see other adjustments and changes take place. if you think what happened four years ago, the lead changed then several times in the last three months and it wouldn't be surprised --dash we've gotten a lot of really good candidates. i think people are starting to pay attention and start focusing on who they think would be the best leader for this country. >> what do you think carson has going for him? why is he connecting the way he is? >> i think people admire what he has done. he is an neurosurgeon and i think they also admire his humble work ethic and his ability to connect with people and it's quite contrast to some of the others and yet he does have challenge because of the
9:26 am
office said that is the challenge she's got to overcome but each candidate has their own strengths and their own liabilities i guess. they've got to go to the people of iowa and convince them that they are the best one and have the best ideas to lead our country. it is clear the country is in trouble. we are deep in debt. we don't have the respect of our allies and our adversaries don't fear us. we need new leadership and i think the people of iowa have unique opportunity into the person who wins the iowa caucuses to start the process and we take this responsibility very seriously. >> is jeb bush in trouble? >> it's too early to make that assessment. i think he's got some really good ads but what he accomplishes as governor although florida he's got to spend more time here and really
9:27 am
i think marco rubio has also got some potential and you see jindal and fury in and there is a lot of there's a lot of good candidates to choose from. the neat thing is here in iowa we are going to get the chance to meet them and ask them questions and evaluate who we think would be the best leader. exposing his own weakness, how he pays the bills and his
9:28 am
if you think we can grow our economy while ignoring climate change, think again. america's most innovative companies are already moving to clean energy using existing technology to improve their bottom line. now we need a plan to help businesses and families across america to save money on electricity and create millions of new jobs. it all starts with 50% clean energy by 2030.
9:29 am
time for insiders quick pics. we bring back governor o'malley and question won one the republicans did not answer this question during the debate this week some minute somebody tried with you. they asked what do you think is your biggest weakness. >> my biggest weakness can i pick to? to get sure.
9:30 am
>> empathy and humility. >> are you have too much empathy. >> s-letter and too much and military. >> sure short. question number two income level where people should pay higher taxes. >> i think that --dash i believe that millionaires and billionaires could pay higher taxes and for decades and decades they did. i believe that if we started returning to that sort of common sense we would have the dollars we need to do things like send our kids to college debt-free. >> so millionaires of the threshold? >> millionaires and billionaires. social security lifting the cap 265. question three if you don't when president which i know you don't want to think about but is there any other federal position out there that would be appealing to you? >> no. >> question for you are not of governor anymore so what do you do for living? how do you hold down the job while running for president?
9:31 am
off and i did some speaking. i didn't take any money from big banks and i didn't take any money from big oil, but that gave gave middle east enough in the bank to be able to tell my wife we wouldn't get evicted between now and the end of the presidential process. >> question five, you travel all over the place in our state so when you're driving around between stops what kind of music do you like to put on? >> it really depends on the day. sometimes we listen to whatever jake has on the radio and other days we pull up pandora just for fun so it really kind of depends on whichever staff person is driving. >> and you just roll with it. >> yes. variety. >> finally, your predictions. >> my predictions? any prediction? do i do this right into the camera? >> if you'd like. >> which camera.
9:32 am
>> it right there. >> i believe the people of iowa come caucus time are not going to be intimidated by big money or the polls and i think the people of iowa are going to surprise america and put forward in new leader. >> i martin o'malley and i just approve this message. >> exactly enqueue governor. >> things are being with us.
