this morning when you're clinton's not subtle jab on how howie bernie sanders vote will help her later plus caucus consideration with and an iowa democrat and an iowa republican who will let us inside their minds about choosing the best person for this night and did a quick pics for iowa republican
9:00 am
first this morning three weeks ago the des moines register's revered iowa poll showed a tight race between clinton and bernie sanders but look at what has happened since. clinton's big debate night joe biden's decision not to run against her, big changes and according to my math if we average the polls polls altogether, clinton has a whopping 34 percent lead over sanders in our state. obviously there are questions about whether those caucus goers were caught sampled and that means bernie sanders could be higher than what it showed perhaps but still it shows that clinton has had a good several weeks or so. she is trying to come after sanders on guns right now. she apparently thinks standard has a weak sanders has week sanders has a weakness against iowans that would've allowed families of those sued by guns to kill to sue the manufacturer's.
9:01 am
>> .-dot manufacturers and sellers are the only industry in america that are immune from liability. unique amongst all the businesses across our nation because a majority in congress decided to go along with the nra's request that got makers and sellers be immune from any accountability for their actions that is absolutely outrageous i voted against it. why on earth would you give that to anybody, let alone those who make instruments that can be used to kill blacks to get sanders fired back saying he also wants universal background checks on guns and says he could bring people together better when it comes to gun law changes. i asked a longtime political observer to weigh in on if
9:02 am
clinton's scores could come in any way. >> i think it is important to progressives although there are more who can sitter themselves closer to sanders so i'm not sure that that will be the definitive. i don't think that will be the definitive issue of the campaign. it will be important for some people, and depending on how the campaign turns out, depending on how the caucuses turnout, the stronger hillary's victory is, the stronger the message will actually be that gun control ought to be a big issue in the november campaign. >> it seems like they're trying to draw the distinction but when you compare them side to side there doesn't appear to be a lot of daylight between the two of them so is that a tough sell to make or how do you make that difference? >> the differences are nuanced
9:03 am
did you catch the nuances than one side of the or the other depending on your take you will either go with bernie or with hillary. >> what do you make about the race? it seems like these last three or four weeks if you look at those statewide polls there seems to be such a big debate between the huge shift and we got the biden announcement that he's not going to run and sanders chances are diminished or how do you see what's going on? >> right now i see hillary's organization is kicking in and that is going to make a difference. the key is i think rationally the college generation there is a very strong sanders constituency that she has to win if she is going to win in november, and these people have two boat.
9:04 am
candidate like she is, how do you ignite the enthusiasm and passion and people particularly the younger people who barack obama was so successful and ignite it and ignited and encouraging them to get out? how does she do that. >> we will see tonight how she answers these questions but she must appeal to their ideals. and she has to take social justice positions had to be absolutely clear. i think that's critical. >> i've found i found a college senior at that clinton event and wants to see whether clinton can win with younger voters compared to bernie sanders. >> the name clinton has been
9:05 am
not really new to me and i think a lot of millennial's frankly this could not be fair to say but i think a lot of millennial's keynote bernie sanders has appeared as a different character to a lot of people i think for hillary to really reach out to a lot of young people i can't answer your question. >> is that a particular issue or is it how she says that it or what is the most important? >> i haven't heard it from hillary yet. i have heard the name clinton so
9:06 am
jazzed about hillary. but she's been working with president obama so frequently already so that even though i am a registered democrat i would be happy to have clinton and office i don't think there would be much change in leaders. >> it feels at this point you might have a better chance of change with bernie sanders and their? begin yes. i do. his speeches seem a lot less solid. i saw him a couple months ago and are now he spoke very passionately i feel clinton is such a seasoned politician and she's so used to she so used to be in front of him stages suit doesn't seem natural in front of people. sanders seems so much less
9:07 am
artificial seen so much less artificial than clinton. >> from one person in that crowd millennial generation's zeros come tell us what you think about these candidates going after your generation. stop by our channel channel 13 facebook page and let me know what you think about that and when we come back, the republican who has narrowed the not yet. not yet. not yet! not yet. pull the peach!

and iowa republican caucus goer looking at the field of candidates is like me in a chinese buffet line. plenty of options and would like to sample all of them. we met golf welch from interest ralph welch from and to set and here is where he is on the choice to keep you know i've got to ask who you are down to.
9:09 am
>> i would say it would be down to this day carson, rubio, jab and christie. >> what do you want from a leader? katie i don't me know if you need the next politician to turn but a leader is someone who is going to tell the truth, stick to what he or she says and move forward with it and try to unite the congress and senate and the majority of the population to believe that our government is trying to move us forward as one and not as a divided party ticket let's bring in matt, former campaign staffer for john mccain and former iowa gop party chair. hello. what ralph was talking about there, carson, rubio, bush and
9:10 am
christie what he you meant wet makeup is vital for? >> welcome to the 2016 caucuses. as we see the numbers go up and down, what we see that his constant is people who could change their minds between now and february 1st. it is interesting with his choice the one thing i noticed is that most iowa and republicans have not decided which candidate they want to support but they've mostly decided which laying lane they're going to draw from if it's one of the outsider tea party candidates were christie conservative candidate or the more established economic economic conservative. >> how do you describe carson? three of those four i would assume you would say could be in the establishment lane with rubio bush and christie so what does carson represents now? >> it right now within carson more than almost any other cars and save candidate save trumped maybe because he is a unique candidate but what cart what did carson want to hear from iowans
9:11 am
is life story not necessarily an innate ideological boxes in the republican party party so that has been one of the fascinating stories and that will continue over the next 90 days almost a caucus night. >> bounced around quite a bed and bit and you are publicly uncommitted but he bounced around to a lot of these different folks so i'm curious what you think of this event. what do you make up of the people in the room? are you seeing new people and their? obviously one thing the democrats did in 20 oh eight was to bring new people into the fold but between trump and carson supporters are you seeing a lot of new faces? hack. >> earlier this summer i was into buchanan was looking at a number number of candidates around the state had we had about 150 people on a weekday over the noon hour. and i know a lot of republicans around the state and recognize
9:12 am
the people in the room. they weren't there to hear talk about national security which was what we were discussing. they were there to see ben carson. they had read his books and may be seen with gifted hands with cuba gooding junior. with carson where seeing something and with the trump phenomenon we will learn on february 1st whether he has an ability to remake the caucus elective with people who have been disaffected. i've been talking to people who don't understand i was electives so the challenge donald trump has is convicting people who don't want to play that game and have complete distrust for that game to play at one night for caucus on february 1st. >> if you are advising anyone besides carson and trump right now how do you advise them to take this on what he you just advise them to take this on and
9:13 am
go down over time. >> what ben carson does mayor may not have an effect on maybe mark rubio or chris christie or the other candidates are competing for about 38 of 40 percent of the caucus elective. >> i thought it was odd along the same lines that he wasted any time ripping on trump early. it seemed like he spent a lot of time focusing on rubio but wasn't it a mistake going focusing on trump? >> from the national standpoint one of the things i saw was that they want to see a little bit of a fight and a little bit of aggressiveness coming out of jab bush. >> bush rubio is that going to keep going this little back and forth? it is most mostly a bush rubio field. >> you have those four
9:14 am
candidates christie and in case a cat into it rubio and bush likely seem to be the two of those four who are most committed to spending personal time and iowa. when we talk about those traditional three tickets out of iowa and new hampshire, they may not be the first three finishers but who finishes in each of those lanes for the republican party and that is where the group you bush. >> when we come back debate debate debate. i knows what it's like to be right in the middle of that
9:15 am
pull off these is a comic book version of the a campaign click here is what we now know presidential republican presidential candidates don't like open debates to long questions cnbc and apparently there have been a big feud right
9:16 am
now about how the debate should happen in the future. matt, i thought about you right away with this because i remember what he went through when you were chair back in 2011. straw poll they were starting to ask some questions about it they're starting to get the big names name so you work names he worked with fox and pull up a national debate campaign and it seems that probably helped the straw poll and kept them relevant at that time but how were you viewing this back and forth and are the campaigns getting too much power? >> i did not know how lucky i was not to have the fights over the green m&ms. we actually did three debates last time to inbox one doing fox won a names one in sioux city and one with abc at drake university before the caucuses. i thought the state party did a great job partnering with networks. of course we've seen a new debate set up by the chairman and is and i when there's a lot of things have been concerned about since that was announced earlier this year, want to
9:17 am
consolidate all of the power at the national level but it also consolidates power in the hands of nantes of network executives as opposed to say have been voters having voters start the conversation peaked so debates have even further nationalized what would normally have been the province of the first few early states. one thing i hope we will see going forward especially with the january debate is may be some early polling criteria because in 2011 had we used national criteria and not i will criteria actual caucus minor winner rick santorum would not have been invited to participate in that debate. >> so we have 14 left in her hometown gilmore here so in your mind they are doing undercard in the big stage. is that the way to go or is it better to do seven and seven? >>, sports guys so i always use
9:18 am
analogy. you've got the bucket in the first seven go in round one and the second seven going around two to a glitzy work goes from there because especially if we come back to iowa specific polling polling and you have three quarters of the electorate that can still change their mind in the next 90 days, it's not good for the process to have that playing such a role in this process. >> i don't see what people get out of it when you if you are truly an undecided person i don't know what you get out of it. >> that's what we saw on cnbc debate question designed you know ted reference spitting candidates against each other like the christians versus alliance and a in the a coliseum

9:20 am
had 800,000 people show up to congratulate their favorite team as the royals rolled through kansas city in a victory parade. matt strong is a big royals fan fans fan so i know it was a big week for you. >> i feel there are a lot of connections between baseball with strategy and politics. what do you think? >> and as a royal and some royals royals fan you connected to money ball not having superstars you can make analogies to that's how you build an organization to when win the iowa caucuses, kind of hard work and perseverance and it's a great couple of years to have been a royals fan and of course having a young son that you're raising to be a baseball fan of had to explain why it's like this when you your kansas city royals fan. >> we were both kids and can remember the 1985 series when your royals beat my cardinals thinks cardinals thanks cardinals thinks tone things turn compares blown call and we're still a little bit bitter about that. >> no question donned a contract congenital place in all of our
9:21 am
>> and he's a great guy. >> from waterloo originally. >> write just one bad call. what about the these strategically in. >> i think the way the royals were put together is a great example of that. they had a process and they invested in a farm team and didn't go out there and chase the big names they may be chased the endorsements and you think about what success means and politics and whether the obama campaign in 2008 to what we are seeing on the ground now is kind of putting in that time the hard work that people don't stay in the off-season that patent pays dividends and then all of a sudden you look around and say
9:22 am
royalties . time for answers quick picks. question one, john mccain to work for him in 2008 cycle. what do something about him as a
9:23 am
person that must be put on most people don't know? >> must people don't know his very generous with his personal time and taking care of staff to need help along the way. >> when you were chair in 2012 you had about 120,000 or so republicans show up on caucus night. coming and you think will show up in 2016? >> today i think maybe just i hear more. >> what he sees do you see is the biggest change in the caucus? >> this is one that comes near and dear to my heart and the reporting process. i'm very excited about the changes that been made to streamline and make sure the results are timely and accurate. >> so the better bond, sean connery or daniel craig? >> i would go roger moore. >> and that's one. this will really test you. your royals just won the world series so what would mean more to the royals won the world series or hawkeyes when the win
9:24 am
>> i already want to lobby condi rice was on the football playoff committee. >> and prediction. >> we talked about caucus turnout. i believe we will be slightly ahead of where we were last time. there's never been a republican win with less than 25 percent of the vote on caucus night, and i believe that will be the case if

>> thank you this sunday morning, what's the story or stories with ben carson? did he embellish tales about his violent youth and possible admission to west point? carson talks directly to nbc news. >> it's not time to spend every single day talking about something that happened 50 years ago. plus, cotdown to election day t. is exactly one year away from today. voters are fed up with washington and yearning for
