8:01 am
8:02 am
the first snow of the season kept first responders busy. this was the scene of a rescue last night in polk county... an s-u-v slid off the road and into a creek ... northeast of des moines in the town of berwick. ames saw the bulk of the snow in our area.. and plenty of crashes as well.
8:03 am
pole said the roads were like 'bumper cars' for a time, with several accidents caused by the slippery weather. the driver of this s-u-v apparently underestimated the treacherous roads and flipped her vehicle. the accident left the driver shaken, but not seriously hurt. for those who avoided an accident, the snow still caused some traffic headaches for iowa drivers. joining us by phone now, sergeant nathan ludwig from the iowa state patrol, for the latest on how roads
8:04 am
don't let the first snow leave you with a 35 dollar ticket stuck to your windshield.. this year, there are no warnings for people who park along a snow route in des moines. knowing where to park is a challenge in these five neighborhoods. on odd numbered days.. like today... cars must be parked on the side of the street with odd house numbers. on even days, drivers need to move cars to the other side of the street. the cold and snow might keep some fans away from kinnick today.. "this is what real hawkeye fans do ya bundle up and ya go!" it's a historical team it's senior day are you kidding me, you gotta go." kendra daly will be there, but about half of polk county's i-club members plan to stay home
8:05 am
the university says fans watching the team play for an 11-and-oh season in person... should wear boots and warm clothes because they will likely find snow in their seats. "getting snow out from between one row and all the rows, that will be a little more difficult, if we get the significant amount of snow fall there will probably be snow in the stadium, but our staff will do their best and have the aisles and the concourse as clean as best as " iowa increased security for the final home game of the year.... implementing a clear bag policy for anyone coming to the stadium. the winter storm postponed high school state championship football games until monday... but didn't have an effect on politics.. seven republican presidential contenders took part in a "family forum" last night in des moines. and things got off to a not so civil start with the first question. 19:12:14--29. 'we are taught in life to treat people with compassion, to love thy neighbor, to be respectful of each other . in watching the democratic

capable you are of explaining your disagreement, the more likely you are to engage in infantile behavior. all you have to do is go on the internet and read an article, and then go to the comments section, you usually cant get five comments down before, people are calling each other idiots and all kinds of names.' 19:20:33--50 'can you disagree and not be disagreeable? and i think the answer is sometimes. you know we all believe passionately in what we believe in, i bet you theres a few people here who believe passionately in the sanctity of life and when you see the planned parenthood videos youre outraged.' governor mike huckabee said the protestors don't bother him. they serve as a reminder that we live in the greatest nation on earth and allow people to disagree with us. huckabee went on to say that protesters here aren't shot on the sidewalk... whereas they would be in a lot of other countries. the g-o-p candidates also talked about marriage and family at the faith
8:08 am
the snow isn't stopping this season's first winter farmer's market. you'll find locally raised turkeys, hams, pies... everything you need to round out your thanksgiving dinner. the market runs today from from nine until one at capital square and the kaleidoscope downtown. thanksgiving brings the whole family together.. and that includes your furry ones. coming up on today in iowa saturday... why you shouldn't feed your dog a bone...plus some upcoming a-r-l

the snow is done in central iowa but it left a swath of heavy snow, especially across northern iowa, in it's wake. northern iowa saw 10"+ in many spots, central iowa received 5 to 7" and most of southern iowa saw 3" or less. it will now be very cold and wind. skies will clear through the day with more sun by afternoon. winds will be strong from the northwest at 10 to 20 mph and gusts up to 25 mph.

8:12 am
a jolly holiday tradition... the week before thanksgiving.. a local charity helping kids want to get you into the christmas spirit. how it's hoping to brighten your weekend with all things santa,
8:13 am
welcome back to today in iowa saturday. i am joined now by chris vogesser with the make a wish foundation of iowa. they have a special event going on tomorrow night to get you into the christmas spirit
8:14 am
and welcome back to today in iowa saturday. i'm joined by stephanie from the animal rescue league and xander. he's been very well mannered this morning. yes xander is an absolute sweetheart. a little on the lean side because he is very active. he has a little bit of pickiness when it comes to his dog friends but we're told from his old home that he loves cats and he's very active. so we're looking for families that would
8:15 am
take him to the park, take him on runs, give him some different puzzle toys. just give him ways to stay entertained because he gets bored easily. vacuums don't seem to faze him, he's great in the car. with thanksgiving coming up, it's a good time to think about your pets when guests are coming over or if you'll be gone. if you're having guests over we just advise you to give your pets a little quiet area. especially if big crowds stress them out, you can give them a treat
8:16 am
to feed pets cooked bones from ham or turkey or anything because it can cause some serious issues. it would be great to feed them some of the cooked meats if you have it just stay away from the bones. now that the weather is starting to cool down, we have a lot of indoor events. tales for tails is a fun one for kids. it's story time for kids, we have visits from therapy pets too. our other one is knittin' for kittens. we have experts who come in and knit beds for them. if you're interested in learning we have a lot of ladies
8:17 am
knit. we accept all levels and we're always looking for yarn donations and people who know how to knit to come and teach.
8:18 am
good home and we' who coined the term "side bread?" because there's nothing "side" about this bread. it may look like the moon. but it's the star of the show. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. that sound. like nails on a chalkboard.
8:19 am
but listen to this: (family talking) that's a different kind of sound. the sound of the weekend. unleash the power of dough. give it a pop. america's never been a country of quitters. it's not who we are. we don't ignore threats like climate change. we face our problems head-on. with american-made clean energy, we can end our dependence on foreign oil... spark new innovation... and create millions of new jobs. solving our climate crisis starts with 50% clean energy by 2030. so, what are we waiting for? iowans are digging out from the first snowfall of the season..

the my plate rule which is a quarter protein, a quarter grains, and half vegetables. and i did cheat a little here because we consider corn a starchy vegetable. one thing i do have on both plates is dark meat. but it is higher in carbs and calories. it's not tremendously higher, but just mix it with some white meat. so you get the really lean white meat but the flavor from dark meat. if you have to snack before the meal there is almost always a veggie tray. the dip is just plain greek yogurt and a packet of ranch dressing. this is a fat free and low calorie way. i don't think anyone is going to notice. thank you for the tips we will put those on our website. or you can email your questions to whitney at centsableheath@fa rewaystores.com. thanks whitney for

this time of year tends to bring out the best in us all... a woman in new york is making sure thousands of kids in need get something special to open this christmas. michael scotto shows us how she got into the toy business. every year, carol suchman donates toys to some of the city's poorest children. so when she walked by this shuttered toy and stationery store in the west village with a for rent sign in the window, she had an idea. "when i saw this toy store, i just realized i could just do it on a grander scale for this one year." she contacted the owner of hudson party store and proposed buying everything inside. "we talked and negotiated and

by store, she means thousands of toys and stuffed animals, and boxes of school supplies too. she bagged it all up and donated it to the city's department of homeless services - just in time for the holidays. "i've been doing this for many years and we have many generous sponsors. and people do toy drives and do a lot of giving. but i have to say, that this is the first time anybody ever bought out an entire store and donated to the children of shelters." suchman says she usually donates hundreds of toys each year to give as birthday gifts to foster kids in brooklyn. the west village philanthropist has the means to do it - she and her husband once owned a successful technology company.
