afternoon. >> so after all of those attacks is as to what's comfortable enough to go out. >> yes. >> why? >> because we could. >> doesn't feel nervous or wonder if there would be more? geek it we were nervous but police seemed to have everything mostly under control, and the attacks took place three or 4 miles from us. >> when this all went down, obviously we did not know who would claim responsibility for what had happened. >> correct. >> were you thinking isis at the time? what were you thinking? >> i was thinking terrorists, radical islamic terrorists. >> how did you proceed with the rest of the vacation? and that clearly feels like the weird way to describe it at this point. >> is really took on whole new attitude. the visitation kind of went into the tank but we still tried to make the best of eight bad

we had it in dinner at the paris restaurant, side walk restaurant and sunday we could not get into any of the museums. sorry it we were supposed to go see her photograph exhibit. we walked around the latin quarter and just tried to make the best of eight bad situation. >> were the streets a lot more quiet? did you notice fewer tourists are more regular locals out? did people stay in or what did it look like? >> it looks like people were out but of course there was the heavy police presence. for example, if we want to go into one of the department stores, there were guards there that said show me her coat open your bag and then in the case of one store their wanted to see all my wife's backpack with the zip top top and nice she said no thank you and stayed out while i went in and shopped.

gay american airlines. >> did you deal with what but at what it for the do not let your head go there. >> we do the what if's, but it's up to situation where it's out of our control so we look to the guy upstairs for comfort and guidance and put our trust in the authorities and hopefully they're going to do an good job. >> fortunately he and his wife were okay. in mecca to economic recovery out of country imagine a world where the only thing you had to wrestle for on thanksgiving was the last piece of pumpkin pie. and the only place we camped out was in front of a fire and not the parking lot of a store. at t.j.maxx, marshalls and homegoods, we're closed on thanksgiving because family time comes first. let's put more value on what really matters. this season, bring back the holidays.

will in newton this. thinking on these i will for this past week are all about the middle all about the middle class and that's why we love the newton campus would be perfect backdrop for this because of all that town has gone through. you get to see and i'm sure feel the economy in a lot of ways and you also got to talk to donald trump is instructive about that. i'm curious what you make about how he responded to your question about education? >> it was interesting. i asked how it got over 3 million jobs in the us economy were appointed players are saying they don't find skilled workforce and we have millions of individuals particularly low income with work ethic milking wanted looking one of two jobs of the family doing the best they can can support to get training for the great job ;-semicolon i should come with how he would help these individuals find the tuition and book austin blue cross etc. so they could get it would indicate education and his answer was
9:10 am
that's pretty good answer. the gallup organization has done the study and says the most important element people bring it in in the education classroom to the education classroom with. the need to believe they can be successful so that while the good answer as far as the national feeling but what i wanted to know is how it going to help find funding for tuition and books etc. so they can take time off for one of their job jobs inc. and training program and get into an job that will pay well. >> we have seen that struggle and challenge for a lot of these folks because if you had to work while you're going to school, you only have so many hours in the day so you either need to take that leap of faith and get alone to pay for it but it is tough to make this all work numbers wise and timelines keeping the important thing is that these individuals are willing to work and often worked long hours, but they need to take break from work to see her
9:11 am
greater good or greater goal down the road. the gmac offers about 150 programs and certificates at all times of the day and night. we try to make it work and into his schedule but at the bottom line, the individual has to find the time and put in the effort. 60 percent or more of all jobs require high school degree but no more than in an two-year degree at gmac or community college. these jobs are paying very well, great middle-class jobs but we've got to get people into these training programs. we know that every time our legislature and governor gives us more money that we can support students as they are going down the pipeline, the more students we get through certificate and career programs integrate jobs. so these individuals need to break. they need to little bit of time into little bit of support in the end of company gets the very very good worker because no one out works works the iowa

workforce. >> what you think about this governor branstad tells us there there's a lot to this skills gap. what is the cause for this? is this something that early on in our lives where not encouraging kids to look at these fields? is it because were slow to react from what? how did we get this gap? the governor's counsel is really focused on working with k-12 counselors. when we see young people up until the middle of beginning of middle school they're very interested in careers but then they start to take some of the top or classes and hall have the life issues and sports and everything else that intervenes in their lives that we have the big drop off. i think our challenge is to make sure people have of better understanding of what the jobs are in their own area or in the state of iowa so they can say well i really would like to be of welder or an engineer and in the counselors say if you want to do that, if you want to make
9:13 am
things, you've got to be good at these particular courses. the faculty in the k-12 system are doing great job. the counselors have way more students should we just need to get students more support and more exposure to let what the real good jobs are taking what do you get most calls about? what kind of professions? you hear a lot from these business leaders and i heard him talk specifically about hillary clinton event that gmac and ankeny hosted one time that there have to be certain jobs are getting the most inquiries about right? >> welders weld as welders forever. now welder's are pretty well meeting that need but it is it. every company, in and this station can't pay the opening his eyes fewer so we have great integrate new it partnership board. we have started the camps for women to learn how to gain some of the certifications may need
9:14 am
in their they need in their job etc. we're starting the cyber security initiative right now because cyber security of the big issue right now with everyone but these are two-year graduates. we are able to custom design the skilled employee in to hear into here since i go to work for company and do almost anything. we still need four-year degree graduates for your degree graduates and graduates regional but the two year skilled workers specifically trained in the specific craft can do it great job. >> i would think one of the things her colleagues across the country get jealous about in that you get some private time with these presidential candidates because the campaigns have hatched so many events over the years and one of your on one of your campuses here. given you have met trump and clinton, carson is that true? >> carson, christie, santorum. we have invited them all. we want them all. >> that's at least five of them here.
9:15 am
when you get the one-on-one time i'm curious about what you. >> they want to know students story. they look at all of the equipment in the computers and the mills we've got into land i and they want to hear the student's stories because it students stories because it helps them connect when they can put up face to her face to the concept. we trained for most of the jobs and we have the best return on investment if you look at the amount of money the state spends on us and our tuition is low. when they have funding and they can give us the little extra money, we are all not-for-profit. we make no money off this. we just need to break even so we can take someone with the little bit of support get them into her job and not have companies call us all the time whether it's in
9:16 am
welders or, culinary, they call us because they know we deliver an exceptionally high quality skilled worker, or the students that come to us in the first four years for it to your degree. where the only community college in the world but they articulate with. tuskegee just articulated with us. where the only community college in the midwest and there are very few in the nation and do. our staff and faculty are second to none. they want to teach and that is what we do extremely well. >> i would think that the challenge has to be for those older students have you gone out of school a few years and had to come back for one whatever the circumstances, work or to help kids or whatever it is, that's a lot of stuff just jogged all and trying to pay back the bills. >> our average size of the team. 18. 37,000 accredited students per year are average classes 18.
9:17 am
we are free have free tutoring free support and we have faculty members who can could teach anywhere but all we care about is quality teaching in the small classroom. >> to have any childcare? >> with the child development program on our ankeny campus with the childcare program there but we don't know it near to the scale that our students need. then the major barrier from and have our families, often single-family woman or man so the child is the big deal childcare is the big deal and we don't do enough of it. it is extremely expensive as you know and we spent spend spent most of our time on honda we hire more full-time faculty to deliver quality education. >> thanks for your efforts with the term farm parking ticket was great. i was happy to meet him and it was very interesting. >> and you got to give him the question. >> i got my picture coming up,
