very different. we will compare what happened with howard dean versus hillary clinton. plus on the road another unique talk with another presidential candidate who will go hands-free with us on renewables, multitasking and look mom no hands. in the quick picks we will have a a well-known iowan turn off author will pick his powerball among other things. first of hillary clinton artie had her iowa skeptics out here. she finished a surprising third in the 2008 caucuses then complained the process excludes some people like exclude some people like those who have to work on caucus night for example. she is not exactly wrong about that and the democratic party has worked to make some changes. this week police are a newly released batch of newly released batch of her old e-mails from the secretary of state and this

e-mails. she wrote it to her longtime friend in january 2012 and apparently talking about newt gingrich in florida there will be pressure on state republican party's to reopen or liberalize valid ballot access especially in the caucuses which as we know are creatures of the parties extremes. those last couple of words they are is what got the attention there. so did iowa democrats you might hear some of the states highest profile democrats sticking up for the caucuses and those who take part in a part of of part of the extreme. they would push back against that. we did not hear any impassioned power although she's publicly

was congressman in the second district is the only democratic member from iowa in congress right now. those two back the process but did not really say anything disparaging about clinton or what she's has said here. john dietz is one of the most active and well read democrats. he put out something on his blog with a recurring complaints that the clintons had not done enough to say that iowa is indeed first in the nation and we can after her for about that for a while but he added in his blog the irony is that the iowa caucus has played a role in strengthening diplomacy and 2008.

from howard dean and things he said back in the 20 oh four campaign. he was the former vermont governor at the time. at the time nbc went back to the old tape archives and pulled out something he had said set in 2,000 on a canadian public affairs show. here is part of that report from lisa myers, nbc's investigative reporter at the time and a fellow mizzou graduate. >> nbc news has reviewed and 90 of dean's appearances since 1996 and found him to have a wide range intellect, sharp tongue and shifting views on some key issues. four years ago he had almost nothing nice to say about the iowa caucus. >> if you look at the caucuses caucus systems they are dominated by special interests on both sides and both parties. special interests don't represent the tendencies of the american people just the extremes. >> he said caucuses were a waste
9:12 am
>> but i can't stand there and listen to everyone else's opinion for eight hours about how to fix the world. >> now is a candidate dean seems to appreciate the value of iowa caucuses. >> it is important. we spend a lot of time here, we want to make clear this is the place to change the democratic party and change america. >> his opponents had a lot to say back then and here is how they tried to rip dean and praise i once. >> i think the iowans deserve an explanation as to how he came to these conclusions and if he has changed his mind about what goes on here. >> it really is insulting to a process that i have found to be democracy at its best. i have been stunned by how serious iowans are about the caucuses. >> number one, i disagree with what he said.
9:13 am
caucuses are very important part of the democratic process. i have learned an enormous amount of myself traveling around myself traveling around iowa and participated. >> dean later apologized sort of and said those were old comments you had heard and he had learned a lot about traveling in the state of iowa as state of iowa as a candidate purely. hillary clinton did not come out with an apology right after this statement monday. her campaign released a statement to me saying clinton is committed to the process and not in disputed claim she is not committed to earning iowans support. this time she comes here a lot more and talks to media more. she is doing this earlier in the campaign and her leadership is different her campaign focuses different, her outreach is different but this that came out monday reminds some people that she does not always have the

year and what they want to do in the coming year. he watched judy bradshaw on the podium the longtime police officer who eventually became the chief there and is now the director of the iowa law enforcement academy. during her talk she made a candid moment about what happens to colleagues after serving and protecting for a number of years >> it gets back to why we make the judgments and decisions that we are making and that your actions as a you are actions as a law enforcement officer have consequences and they impact that fit the citizens and what we see and in law enforcement, and i can't can speak firsthand from my own career, is that we start out doing the job for all the right reasons, and after a period of time, we get this cynical we they perspective. it happens to everyone in the profession. blue courage is an attempt to dial it back and remind us of

to begin with. >> blue courage is the national training effort to get law enforcement better prepared for the next emergency, accidents, hostage situations, domestics mentally ill and it will train officers how to deal with that and i was giving $1 million grant from the us department of justice. next february national blue courage trainers can start educating the iowa trainers of the law-enforcement academy here. then those folks will train officers from all over the state. next one of the more unusual interviews i've done this cycle and it has nothing to do with the interview subject.

is going to be standing for the rss, you are going to have real serious problems in your industry and iowa. >> i want to explain what we were doing here. we caught up with santorum as he was driving from dc back to his home in virginia and he was multitasking so he set up his iphone and we used face time to talk back and forth with him so we could see him. >> that is just part peeking that is just part of what it takes. you've got to have the balance between what you do at work and what you do in your personal life, and i just finished shooting a whole bunch of commercials and i have about an hour or so to run back to the house to spend a little time with karen and the kids after they get back from school, and then i am off to do a what is

who has combined cable tv from the dream county town of cooper all the way to the specified on the johnny carson show he is been a executive on tv of the boss of the black park zoo and now blank park zoo and now he is the boss of the lottery. >> when i was on the johnny carson show ed mcmahon was actually drinking whiskey in his coffee cup, but this is water. >> mine is as well, just for the record. dear to dream, dear to act, unlock your ideas to greater success. so we read this and we're supposed to do what? >> and iowa people don't realize how many opportunities we have and how many fun things we can do.

in iowa and great jobs in iowa my kids to live here. great things happen right in the state and we can do a lot of the thing got a lot of great things. >> you have can either not hold down a job or you have a diverse career. >> i have a bs in speech and i guess maybe that comes together era my generation where you went to work for someone and you retired at 60 to your social security and you're done. i went to work for a company called heritage communication, cable television before it was big leader in des moines and they started this deal where every day i went to work it was fun. everything you touch seemed to turn to gold. it was such an experience but 20 years later a big-time moneymaker for the bass brothers took a run at the stock and we had to do a mass buyout and i found myself everything i with not accomplished in life had was junk and they helped me take some of those idea and take it to make own company and companies and get started.

years than the zoo and the lottery. >> is there a thread that connects these various careers are not? >> i think when i was young people called it or grace of a started taking this creativity but i realize being creative doesn't make you any money. you have to innovate the idea to make it work. >> so this will inspire us to follow our dreams? >> either that or have a good nap. i think the ideas to tell some stories after maybe two or three visits one of the big things to take away is when you're in an organization or personally, ways to take ideas and act on them. today are to dream. come up with ways to act on the idea. i've got a couple of ideas for you to make the show better. i think you should wear a different tie. >> we need a lot of ideas. >> the first thing i do is look to see your reaction but when you're giving ideas you don't want to make the judgment so it becomes a two-point process.

10 minutes and listen to as many ideas as you can. if i'm really thinking of ideas i write down a hundred ideas and then you take those and judge them. that is the way i have always found success in daring to dream. >> one we've talked to a lot of various successful people they will say they learned most about their fit from their failure is not necessarily their success so i assume you've had some failures to talk about. >> many failures. including cooper iowa. we sent out many letters telling people cooper iowa was 43 of the 44 letters failed but the one letter that made it went to u-letter vi and ubi called and said we like the idea stuck it on a national wire and then it went to johnny carson and then that little town of 50 had 12,500 people show up including the cbs nbc the today show. this was a huge youtube sensation before any of that stuff was around.
