he is traveling the country now on behalf of hillary clinton but the organization he helped found, democracy for america, their supporting bernie sanders instead. i asked governor dean why clinton for him. >> they there are two things that are really important. number one she cares what the facts are. i think the country has suffered a lot from people in congress who don't care what the facts are and number two, given what the way things are going to want the most experienced person in and the presidency and that that's hillary clinton. >> i was talking with some friends and we were thinking back on your candidate's campaign campaign in 2004.
9:12 am
sanders of that race, not the establishment guy? what is a fair comparison? >> that's a hard one because we are so different. he has an economic message that he is carried for 40 years. it is an important message and to pick the right time for it. i actually got into the race to balance the budget on the university of the universal healthcare program. the facts convinced me that a rock was not fair and that we were being lied to and i don't think it's fair that kids are remain are being central foreign country to die if you lie to them and that is clear to me what was going on. >> i remember you are holding us once and i'll for focusing too much on the war. >> i probably did. the truth is we still don't have universal health care in this country and we ought to. >> what do you think --dash it
9:13 am
something in particular. this one is interesting to me because if you look at this last poll it shows democrats are more interested on social things and the republicans are more focused republicans are more focused on >> democrats do focus more on economics and republicans frankly aren't very good at it. >> you get to be the circuit now as they bounce you around from place to place. >> everyone has a different idea about what to do of terrorism but for me it's a lot of fun. for me i have seen a lot of things that i saw 12 years ago. >> >> a lot of its pressure peak of the schedule is pretty tough.
9:14 am
is to get you out of here but i've usually had a great time in fort dodge and the guy who was my captain professors the gynecology out there it was junior college out there it was really fun. i think first of all the cleanup what we've got. we've got this idea of clearing off medicaid or under an obama care is ludicrous and there are whole lot of people and families who have suffered greatly. one of the things you have to do is they have to have health care available. another is an expensive college and hillary has a plan to do that which i think is important. one of the things a middle
9:15 am
because health care prices been going on for three times the rate of inflation for 30 years in higher education is gone up to and a half times the rate of inflation over these years. the way you support the middle class is to make sure they have the basics. >> how do you convince people that this change can happen in dc, and unless we change course here and give your part of the whole shebang out there or give republicans a whole thing again, what is it out there that you think can help people believe that the two sides can work together? we obviously don't see a lot of that. >> this is a little political science here. when we lost three elections in a row, two to ronald reagan and one to george h w-letter bush, are potty are our party our are priority our party had to get
9:16 am
i want hillary clinton to be the next president but i also want to win because republicans cannot appeal to young people. the hate wing of the republican party is incredibly unappealing to my children even though my children are more conservative than the average depth democrat but i deck democrat but i think she is going to be president of the united states and when that happens those republican parties who are desperate to kind of try to retool and get away from the anti- immigrant anti- muslim anti- gay anti- anti- anti-, that is not a winning message. for the big picture i really believe this election is critical not just to get killer in the white house but also to fundamentally change the republican party so they understand they do have to work with others. >> what do you make than let's say donald trump. what do you think is the popularity of that? he is obviously connecting with a lot of people. what is that about? >> i think a lot of people are very angry. there has been an enormous
9:17 am
people are very fearful. for the first time since the great depression we have economics had economics situation from 2008 that scared the daylights out of a lot of people, especially people who live in small towns and are already under economic pressure. if you are a member of a the minority community in this country you notice is like to lose a job and not get another one. if you were white, the first time that happened within 2008 with a the great recession. if you are 55 you lost a job and didn't get another one except maybe being a greeter at walmart. that is a profound change. the country is changing profoundly. when people get uncomfortable they get angry and frightened and i think a lot of those people are gravitating toward donald trump. >> so how do you know fear can be quite a motivator so how do you run against that? >> i think this country is a special place because the bin
9:18 am
founded our country and i think that's true and i think people realize it's a great nation that has to be found on hope and has to make decisions founded on hope not fear. >> i want to ask you one last one about the infamous dean scream. frankly i covered you that night and it didn't sound that way to me but it does look on tv a lot different. is this a funny thing our now or does that kind of bug you the way the tech cable will be overplayed that make you look like and that's out there? >> there's two answers. it doesn't bug me. it's a lot of fun and i'm i use it in speeches and it also always draws a lot of laughs the other part is that yes the cable you know it was unfair and blah blah blah but this is the most powerful office in the world. if you can't devise a campaign and take it when cable people are making fun of you what are
9:19 am
what america wants alaska back? i don't have regrets are or are you ill feelings. i have no nothing no bad feelings about a lot of mileage out of it. >> that's very true. thank you. dave chapelle has an incredibly funny version of the dean scream that it is worth you tubing by the way if you find it inaccurately come back trouble with tweets and when the cand sanders: over 2 million contributions have been made to the only campaign that rejects a corrupt campaign finance system. you can't level the playing field with wall street banks and billionaires by taking their money.
9:20 am
by taking their money. i'm bernie sanders, and i approve this message. this is what started some twitter controversy. first we have a republican presidential candidate carly fiorina talking during the last republican debate. she was sort talking about a struggle thing she survived breast cancer lost a child and then the said quote being called every b word in the book along the way "-right-double-quote so then ebay steve base treated if a few things with conservative
9:21 am
he said quote well fiorina goes full divine vagina right away. later in the 19 apologized after his wife tweeted at him and the next day here is what he was saying: my tweet last night was water and stupid which is why amy scolded me for it but it is intellectually dishonest to link it to cruise. that is what started this debate 's on twitter i was asking people should ted cruz campaign be responsible for what a high surrogate is like? bleeding heartland the des moines dem's has tweeted has tweeted back mostly estrous ergot sent to promote candidates in public but mostly the most window for supporters with no connection to the campaigns. it seemed like there was a lot of ideas both ways when we ask that question. next big party for governor branstad. there was one group not

an open house began with the tribute from terry branstad who became the nation's longest longest-serving governor. he welcomes people into his office for hours to honor the occasion than later that night, staff through a huge party at part of the party at the state fairgrounds to continue the celebration. i asked some of the vips there what they most admire about terry branstad. >> with the first thing you think of? >> i think of as a man with a lot of energy committed to this state, loves people, loves to be governor. >> clearly his tenacious. he stayed with it he believes what he believes in. he doesn't he does his homework, and he's gathered good people around him. >> what's the first thing you think of when you think of terry branstad? >> i think of passion for the state of iowa and state of iowa and for people. it's not always easy getting

dogged and patients so the three peas. passion, persistence and patience to. >> the person who comes to mind when you think about your dad? >> responsibility ticket why is that? >> he has taught me responsibility from a young age and if there is anything that i saw growing up in him and through his eyes and where he focused was responsibility, and that is definitely one of his core parts of him. >> matt is the director of executive progress so hello he to give thanks for having me. >> what is the first thing you think of when you hear governor branstad? >> i think of broken promises. this is a governor who when he celebrated earlier this week becoming a longest-serving governor in american history but unfortunately that is by far the most notable achievement of this administration. terry branstad and chris kim reynolds made several

when they took office hindering their campaigns and during their campaign and they have broken every single one. >> so your group kind of had a big truck with a big billboard on the side driving around and i know that sort of took off from the website but what about the timing of what you're doing? since we kind of give the guy his day ended up on him other days? >> we hold the governor and lieutenant governor accountable every day to make sure that folks know about the broken promises there, their dangerous record for iowans. i think this was a day when he was trying to celebrate what he had achieved as governor, and he really has not achieved much. he has set promises, set goals and failed to achieve them. he promised to create 200,000 jobs and he's failed that could. you can't promise to increase family income by 25 percent they have fallen woefully short.
9:25 am
up with inflation. they have the goal of making eye with the healthiest state in the nation and he shut down two of our for mental health institutes and three patients has have died in transfer from those institutes, and now he is recklessly going on a path to medicaid privatization which will put health care at risk for more than half a million iowans so every time you look at one of the goals and promises of the branstad reynolds administration, you can see where they have fallen short so while he is trying to celebrate this, we want to make sure people don't forget what his actual legacy is. >> if he is so bad, why did he annihilate your party's candidate? >> he has been winning elections since 1982 and they always so that statistic out and that is why i said that is his most notable achievement. he is a great campaigner and the bad governor. >> but he wins every single time
9:26 am
point out here, then why does he keep winning? what does that say about his about your candidates? >> he is an excellent politician. he made a promise to create 200,000 new jobs and they have fallen 98,000 shorthand instead of owning up to that, what they did early on in their administration was create a new boat bogus statistic that nonpartisan researchers have called a bogus math to inflate their numbers and falsely claim. >> me the any job that has been losses to sort of forgotten about are not kept track of in the way they keep track of drops. >> writes a rights of uri got fired we don't count. >> correct. so one quick question though. how do you think this affects the legislature? what do think the relationship is going to be like in january? >> i think the relationship between the governor and the
9:27 am
right now because legislatures spent five legislature spent five months negotiating among other things a bipartisan plan to fund our schools to the tune of $56 million and we have republicans and democrats coming together and then weeks before the school year started, the governor line item governor line-item veto of that so that is not trust. if a trust is broken between the governor and the legislature and it's going to be an interesting session because of that. >> i think that will be a key thing to talk about. i would me come back we will
9:28 am
will decide the democratic this is a three-part choice for iowa democrats. a former secretary of state trying to become the first female president, a former maryland governor there is done a lot of support our socialist
9:29 am
the burn. right matt, how do you gain from all of this? >> what you mean? who do i think is going to win? >> right. >> i think right now the front runner has got to be hell or clinton for sure but i think it's too late it's not too late it is too early to count out any of the candidates. when we talked last summer we were talking about joe biden getting in the race and mixing things up so we have what? six weeks or so until the caucus? that is many many lifetimes. >> your group stays out of this right? >> yes. >> so how do you handle a next month and a half? are you going to try to key in on a couple of different issues and put them in front of the candidates, or what do you think? >> we encourage folks to get engaged on a variety issue of issues. also we try to position ourselves as a place where different candidates were people
9:30 am
can come together. i think that is really important on the progressive side of the equation so we had davis at our corn feed we had supporters all candidates at our holiday last year. bernie sanders was our speaker and we provide a forum for all sorts of progressive issues. >> how do you try to get time with the candidates and how do you try to get your group to stand out? there are so many different groups and you have a lot of issue -based groups on both sides and they are all fighting for attention. >> we fight for attention and we talked about our billboard and that's a good tactic and strategy. one thing that our organization is able to do when we talk to
9:31 am
our online community is over 6,000 strong so we provide a large audience for those kicking out to the segment i know you've been sweating out. >> okay. >> when we come back, the defining moment, oil change, the heart disease. asthma. diabetes. 7 out of 10 americans take prescription drugs. but in the last 7 years drugs prices have doubled. hillary's going to take on the drug companies. require medicare to negotiate lower drug prices.
