we met good morning. it is inside us. merry christmas. my wish list think santa did not deliver but our elected officials could and should, and in the insiders quickfix we will see whether mister three tickets has the courage to hover. we start with the drama, hillary, bernie, debbie, the to take breaks the brief. what all that means now and what any of it will mean later. first that reiner back in the day you did some work on heller clintons campaign to the data
9:06 am
this thing matter what happened could depend on what the sand of standard data director was able to be the one who ran those risks and of any of the rest of the campaign happened afterward kinky what happened it wasn't a documented problem was the kind of list that he ran was trying to determine the size of her persuasion universe and how many supporters in certain states and how many supporters sanders has what turnout is going to look turnout even if you can't export those lists or print them off just knowing the top line numbers tonight and they were look in there and see that clinton has a whole lot more
9:07 am
i will then in iowa then and i will then sanders internally does, they could try to start to downplay expectations of cake and because they think there is no way they can kind of match those numbers could be right kinky sanders has used this is a big fundraising tool saying the system is rigged and the dnc is favoring hillary clinton. could that benefit him? short term obviously it hurt if the cut off his access to the data, but longer term doesn't actually help them does it actually help him? can get number one i think it it's ridiculous that someone would try to fund raise off something that started with one of your staffers making a deal, but that's what they're doing kinky staff are you fired. >> ride but i think it could help while up some of his own supporters to think that it is rigged against him, to make them get more excited and they've raised over a million dollars the day they sent up e-mail about the dnc shutting off their access or could help in the
9:08 am
long-term it's bad and bad for everybody because it makes both sides angry at one another and makes it harder for everyone to come together up to the primary kinky another saturday debate last week and still had almost a million week a million people but it's about a third as much as republicans had in their biggest debate. do you think this debate thing is hurting the democrats? kicking i think so. and denying them an opportunity to put their message out there to be able to show up in contrast kind of seriousness and policy focused nature of the democratic debate with the kind of fast sometimes we see on the republican side so that is disadvantageous for a lot of things. it keeps democrats being inspired by their candidates and getting them good talking points. >> and don't think people would get would've gathered around on saturday night kicking up not
9:09 am
it's folks like us can you mentioned turnout at turn in the turnout models. i was looking back at him on the turnout than tequila back in 20 oh four, democrats were up about 125,000. everyone remembers 2008 was almost 4,000 people so what do you think it is realistic in 2016 kinky about halfway between the four in 20 oh eight. can q-letter did you realize i'm quickly to laugh rang out to say what that would be like 180, 190? kicking somewhere around there. you don't have for someone you don't have three main candidates where we had obama and clinton, sanders is going to bring out more people than usual so i think we will have more than 20 oh four, but clinton had such a large campaign staff in the state of their mining up in the group that they can find holding on to female voters and i think they will be a big turnout for the first time as well kinky

9:10 am
on election night of voter turnout is high and go to bed early, we went he is acknowledging he's got to have a big turnout. you mentioned 18190. >> he could have more than that. kind of comparing sanders operation to both candidates will have a lot more support but this is in the same kind of barack obama situation where you have both a lot of excited young people and new people but you also have enough of an activist crowd to know what they're doing and experienced and organize all those people when they show up to cost caucus night kicking we had howard dean on the show last
9:11 am
2004 attend a 16 there any parallels there and obviously he's a clinton supporter right now but it felt like kerry was going to kind of the establishment guy in 20 oh four and clinton is certainly that person now. do you see any similarities there? kicking yes just in that sanders is attracting a much more progressive base and the difference between 2004 and now is that a lot of the online fundraising and activism that began with howard dean's campaign is now so much larger and so much a part of the party overall that you see where sanders broke all kind of fundraising efforts here where he had two.2 million donations so far this year, which whichever beats the previous obama risk are the records. >> said is the dean scream on that big at big lake the legacy on the caucus for. >> right in that when we come back, there is an iowan who is

it just won't go away it won't just go away so my goal and my desire to try to get the people to realize that we had to deal with have to deal with it not for me but maybe for you for the children and i have great grandchildren who are smart and i regret the thought that someday they may be watching david price on tv if you talk about this and they turn and say grandpa what if wanted to do about that. that would be a fair question it is a terrible responsibility for the next generation we don't have that right. >> is it a tough thing to hear from the little ones back home and they say what to do about it grandpa? that. >> they would be if they set it feted and that could very said and that could very easily happen. they asked me about other things going on around the world whether it's terrorism or whatever and every now and then they were shocked me with the questions they ask.
9:14 am
say what did you do about this deficit, why did you do that to us when you have the opportunity to do something else. >> how do you solve this thing? we are right in the middle of a presidential campaign and it is all ended is all about wedding the support of the your prospective party but once we get beyond that, how do we get these folks to commit to whatever there their deck ideas are? kicking i think i think we start now. there's a group that's nonpartisan on the same nation and to join together. whoever the next president is will have to submit their first budget in the first 100 days. and we will know why they don't tell us now he intends to deal with this very, very important problem? it's got to be dealt with, and i think we has as voters and citizens ought to do with their take is on it or at least what they feel like they ought to be doing.
9:15 am
feel they don't want to give up anything but when you look at it whether it's taxes or services or whatever it is, someone has to give up something realistic way don't think you can of course. it all has to be put on the table, put daylight on it and sit down and try to work our way through it. it can be done. each work together for the good of our cause good of our grandchildren children. as it can be done. we've done up front for things it for other things why can't we do it for not think he can what i'm thinking the congressman's wishes for politicians to think more about tomorrow, not just

iowa caucuses, how they work, why they are so weird angle and all the key players who keep them relevant an relevant all these years. jason noble is the host the writer and creator and many other things but he is also here so hello. it's quite a little project you have. you got some props by the columbia journalism review which is not bad. so you've put these things together, 10 episodes are out there now they've all been released so you can get go out and listen. >> binge listening. >> if you choose right. what a surprise has surprised you the most research all of this stuff? >> what surprised me the most i don't does it surprised me but what i did take away from it is just how important average iowans are to this process islands are to this process and really the opportunity that you have just by virtue of being a resident of this state to get involved in this political process, choose the next president in a really personal
9:21 am
that one episode i did was all about activist. >> that was activists. >> that was my favorite one week it was mine also line also. >> just real people give their lives to this process. >> and they give their lives for a few months every four years and have an opportunity to build really sincere relationships with presidential candidates and be a part of history. >> i wanted to ask you about two people in particular because he started getting back to the history here so you got to interview bob dole and walter mondale. >> s-letter. >> what were those experiences like? >> they were great. i grew up in kansas so i certainly had an awareness and knew a lot about bob dole and his service to our country going all the way back to world war ii, and it was a great experience to sit and talk with him, and what i really took away from that interview is the man is 92 years old. he has been out of office for going on 20 years but he is still a politician.
9:22 am
that i told her he was in kansas and my mom still lives there first thing he said when he walked to the door was tall your mother hello for me. >> like he expects to be on the ballot again. >> that's right. >> mondale is sort of the opposite. i did not know a lot about what long longtail mondale and did not understand his place in history and the history of the caucuses. >> he was in minnesota. >> right we went with him to minneapolis where he still keeps the hours hours at his office. >> is he in his late seventies. >> no. he is in his nineties also. >> o-letter is the? >> his experience in iowa is incredible because he was vice president jimmy carter so when jimmy carter ran again in 1980 the history of that was the iowa caucus campaign was playing during the iran hostage crisis in jimmy carter was not going to leave the white house to be seen campaigning so walter mondale basically ran the caucus
9:23 am
then turned around and do that again and 84 and just had a great perspective on this whole process that i had no idea before i went up there met him. >> do something with a journalist since we are talking about our own profession but the iowa caucuses would really not exist in their present form of the national media did not support them and did not come cover them. >> that's correct and it's true going back as long as there have been presidential caucuses in iowa. there is a sort of an unspoken agreement between the campaigns of the national political media that they're going to take i iowa seriously because the candidates come here because the journalists follow them and that is what makes iowa important. >> i wanted to ask you something that i get asked all the time when speaking to groups especially because of the interesting dynamic of the 2016 cycle and we have so many people and that you have such larger than life figures like hillary clinton and donald trump and obviously some others here but
9:24 am
is how do you manage this because there are just so many people. the democrats have fortunately paired themselves down to three so they are easier to come back, i had we lost lindsey graham so unfortunately we loses sense of humor but still, it's kind of wonderful on the republican side so how would you manage all of these people? >> we have some guideposts in the campaign that tell us how we do things right now. we have polling and debate performances and things like that, we have the schedule of when they are in iowa and we pay attention to them but i think that sort of the des moines register we make an effort to cover them all equally about half of our staff right now is assigned to a presidential candidate and give them all an equal shot at winning iowa's attention.
9:25 am
the hard part because you try not to get bogged down with polling so you can try to do some equal coverage because if you look at a cycle ago we would never have covered rick santorum and to until the last couple of days and it's hard but a practical matter of this is when january comes if all of these folks are campaigning hard here they are really only so many supporters to go around and you're going to have to use some of these benchmarks and some of them won't get much attention to. >> that's right and there is always a potential for a very big surprise on caucus night. >> got some serious stuff we have one more segment to do with you sir. when we come back, hovering

2015? >> it was the aftermath of donald trump's statement about john mccain at that event in iowa between when the entire journalism establishment thought at the end of his campaign and that was in july. >> the entire establishment was wrong to my question number two you question number two you know jerry seinfeld has that show cars drinking coffee and apparently barack obama is going to be one of the episodes there. the politician you would think would be most interesting for you to drive around and drink coffee in a car with. >> that was actually one of the inspirations for the podcast. the guy that i actually did that with was chuck grassley. i went on the road with him for three of his town hall townhall stopped and got to see him scoping out the dairy queen in algona. i think i have lived my moment. >> very nice. question number three the hover board. would you do it?
9:28 am
>> apparently. question for you yarn imagines arkansas graduate. jayhawk set a guinness world record last week and had the most people show up at allen fieldhouse wearing an ugly sweater with like 3,000's of been like that. good idea or stupid idea? >> it's a great idea. i should clarify kansas native got it can discredit what went iowa state. >> sorry. we will fix that in editing. question five, you are a dad here and you have a little boy at home so what is most surprised you about becoming apparent? >> is this a cliche ability to function on little sleep. my kid is getting out of his crib at all hours on the mind right now i am moving that again of giving up three times in the middle of the night think it's thinking it's a lot harder when you do it the second time kicking your predictions can keep my
