missed their chance to make big changes in the country. plus we ride along the campaign bus with marco rubio, who tells us whether his feud with ted cruz hurts
9:06 am
good morning. this is the insiders and happy insiders and happy 2016. inside this morning. burns that bernie sanders can he make his wish list happen and rubio's ride as we ride along with marco rubio and asked whether his feud with ted cruz could hurt them both and in the quick picks whether or not we should look at hawaii for our future. let's begin with bernie sanders. the vermont senator joins us now at least most of him does. his voice is what about 60 percent year your? >> something like that. i was going through some of the things you've been going about on the campaign trail free college tuition you want to improve infrastructure and when paid family leave and youth jobs programs.
9:07 am
there. one guy asked me to ask you you've been in congress for a number of years already so how come you haven't done this already? >> when you're in the president of the united states or in a different position than when you are a member of the house were junior senator from the state of vermont. we now have the opportunity to work with members of congress in ways we would not have previously and we have a mandate from the american people. i have to believe that in 2015, 2016 --dash happy new year to everyone, that it is all about people who have the ability and the desire to get a college education. that brings us to the need for free tuition and colleges and universities. we paid for this is taxpayers on wall street bailed out wall street to help up the middle class in this country.
9:08 am
the chilean dollar program but the truth is our rail system in airports we can't create up 13 million jobs by building our infrastructure and we do this by ending a huge flat tax loophole for corporations that do not exist. it with him and in the money and the corporations and in some cases they don't pay federal taxes and i'm going to change that. >> when americans gave democrats control of the three biggest year both chambers of congress and the neglected barack obama then elected barack obama, do you think the party had to use all of its owings and energy to get the affordable care act through and we did not see a focus on raising the minimum wage like you want to do now and while will and your site want to talk about. changing taxes, tax reform, back kind that kind of thing. does it take that much time and energy to get the affordable care act through? geek and i don't mean to be openly partisan.
9:09 am
look at need to be objectively partisan. anyone who looks at what is happened sense since barack obama has been president will see seek an unprecedented level of republican obstructionism. >> but before then you control that. >> yes but you still need 60 votes in and keeping 60 democrats in line to do the right thing was not so easy but the bottom line of if you're asking me the question should there have been a more significant focus on the disappearing middle class and incoming income and wealth inequality demanding that large corporations start paying their fair share of taxes and creating millions of jobs that we desperately need, raising the minimum wage? yes we should have. >> what do you say to people who say i like him, i like with this man talks about, i'm scared to death about what is going on internationally with isis. we so what happened in paris saw what happened in paris and california, and they like the
9:10 am
they look at hillary clinton and say while she is secretary of state so fixed if these are dangerous times why not go after a person like that who has the experience. >> i can see that. you get a lot of experience in that position in my experience in boat taking in terms of foreign policy in the modern history of the united states in america was whether or not we invade iraq. hillary clinton voted for the war. i voted against the war and it gives me no joy to tell you that people go to my website, bernie sanders .com, hear what i have the same to say in 20 10 --dash my fears turned out to be true i think in terms of judgment i think i'm the guy who has pretty good judgment about not getting the united states involved involving potential warfare.
9:11 am
alone working with muslim troops on the ground at the end of the day we destroyed isis with muslim troops on the ground doing the work with our support. some folks particularly on the democratic side it's not really working either way. frankly, is a very complicated and difficult issue. i will tell you from a personal level as vermont's senator went to human too many funerals in the state of vermont of young men who never came home. was our goal has got to be is to
9:12 am
we need a coalition. my nightmares that we get stuck in perpetual warfare in an incredibly complicated quagmire in that region's entrance into syria, they get killed. with we can send more troops in and things get shot down on and on in 20 years from now we need to do with someone talking about how it got to get out of syria. beginning perhaps to see it would be up since there would be thousands. we need to do air attacks, special forces but blew its put
9:13 am
king abdullah of jordan has reminded us, have got to be muslim boots on the ground fighting for the soul of islam. >> talked about taxes. when we come back we want to talk about a lot of ideas here loved what could substantially increase the federal
9:14 am
in certain i think some folks want to know what exactly that means this is insane with and it certain of shipped in the wealth of the top one tenth of 1 percent percent who now owns almost as much wealth as the
9:15 am
people will own award wealth in the bottom own more wealth than the bottom 50 percent. we as the wealthiest people in the largest corporations to start paying their fair share of taxes. specifically, we will end the tax loopholes that allow profitable multibillion-dollar corporations to stash their money in the cayman islands and other tax havens and not pay in a given year clinical and federal income taxes could you have even republicans are going to need to cut their taxes to bring that money my mac. >> of course. that's a republican point of view and they're funded by this
9:16 am
>> ebay to protect them from wall street speculation to increase and expand social security benefits as republicans want to cut social security. i think when your people trying to get by on 12 or $13,000 a year that's crazy. it got to expand both benefits and we do that by lifting the cap on taxable income. >> so no capital? >> no starting 250 and go above. right now if somebody contributes 5 million there doing the same taxes some someone who makes 18,000. did you do that for 15 years and it expand benefits for a lot of folks who desperately need it. >> trunk is saying and you have gone back at him. he is saying they're going to raise taxes on the rich to 90 percent and i think people are waiting for your figure. you haven't? >> let me just say that if you know me i am not the most partisan guy in the world. i've never run a negative ad in my life. i don't like attacking people. i have to say that donald trump
9:17 am
i really had to have to say that and anything he says is apparently the only person in america have seen thousands of people in new jersey, muslims, celebrate. nobody else saw that but he is convinced he sought thought and now he's running around the country saying i'm going to raise taxes by a hundred percent of 500 percent, it's nonsense. it's untrue. the answer however he donald trump, a multibillionaire with a lot of billionaire friends, will pay more taxes than it is currently the case. >> will will will we get those figures before your president. >> absolutely. >> went to think? >> sooner than later kicking one. >> what about a crock normal folks sitting at their kitchen? >> if you're working class middle class one exception, bernie sanders is not going to raise your taxes and here's what we are. where the only major country and on earth does not provide paid
9:18 am
king giving birth don't have a lot of money working-class low income they may have to go back to work in a week or two and be separated from their baby. and supporting legislation in the house and senate supported by virtually all progressive democrats which would raise the payroll tax by $1.61 per week, and that provides three months of paid family medical leave and i think think it's a pretty good that is a pretty good deal. when we come back up this is the fight of the dreaded republican work
9:19 am
nextxte ride along with margaret on average, it takes three hundred americans working for a solid year, to make as much money as one top ceo. it's called the wage gap. and the republicans will make it worse by lowering taxes for those at the top and letting corporations write their own rules. hillary clinton will work to close the wage gap. equal pay for women to raise incomes for families, a higher minimum wage, lower taxes for the middle class. she gets the job done for us. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message. human if you hear ted cruz tablet, marco rubio was lying when he says cruz was once opened the idea of letting undocumented immigrants stay in this country legally. if you listen to rubio tell it, it is cruise who is line who said one thing in the past and is tied to say another thing today.
9:20 am
wife jeanette on their campaign bus. i asked whether he thinks this back and forth with crews will end up hurting both of them. >> first of all, there is no one running for president that understands immigration better than i do. my parents were both immigrants, my family's emigrants my grandparents were immigrants my neighbors, my friend. i still live in a community of immigrants and i know we must have immigration laws that must be enforced. i don't support amnesty. i think we need border security. i propose the longest border security surge that in history but the problem is ted portrays himself as someone whose opinions on immigration today are not exactly what they used to be. he was someone who did support legalizing people who were here illegally. long after the senate stopped debating that issue he was still saying he was in favor of compromise on what to do with people who were here illegally and i believe we must do something about that as well, but first we're going to enforce our laws.
9:21 am
when somebody's talking about building the fence and you with a gang of eight talk about doesn't it show that in the end it is too complex and we are never really going to do anything? >> what has happened as the democrats have held immigration hostage. the democrats have basically said unless you do citizenship for everyone who is here illegally, where not going to do anything. that is an absurd position. irrespective of how you feel about legalization of citizenship, we are suffering country with our right to enforce our immigration laws. we know what it takes to bring illegal immigration under control and secure our borders. they can be be barefoot verified. at least 10 or 20,000 new border regions, more technology, finishing the fencing. i've supported that and as president i will do it. >> just for fun i ask rubio and his wife about their sports passion, miami dolphins. his wife was a dolphins

my five -year-old son had a question about their team's crummy season when i told him i was gone to be talking to them and you can watch the rubio's response to that question on my channel 13 facebook page. when we come back, rubio, crews and the fight to be i was mister establishment.

on is the economy rigged? well, the 15 richest americans acquired more wealth in two years than the bottom 100 million people combined. i'm bernie sanders, and i approve this message. my plan -- make wall street banks and the ultra-rich pay their fair share of taxes, provide living wages for working people, ensure equal pay for women. the middle class will continue to disappear unless we level the playing field.
9:24 am
if you believe the polls and you know they can change, but if you believe the polls will stay where they are it looks like a two-man republican race at the top in iowa, ted cruz / donald trump but there is a whole lot of action outside those two men and a lot of questions. as carson finished? fiorina? can huckabee and santorum find that old magic? do they all have a chance? bush, rubio, kasich, or one of them be the establishment february surprise in our state?
9:25 am
gop chair and nominee for congress, mike mahaffey. make sense of this thing now. so many moving parts here but let's do this little rubio cruise feud. is this hurting both of them as they are bickering about immigration or not? >> the stakes are very high. i read an article this week in the national review saying part of the reason there is there's the problem between the two of them is that they are really pretty much alike in that respect and there is something to that. marco rubio does not have to win in iowa but he wants to place well. ted cruz looks like he is poised to win in iowa, which i think is important for him. >> he probably a must needs to now right? >> he is not going to do as well in new hampshire and i don't think is really trying to do as well in new hampshire but if we go to the south, he is well states. the stakes are very high.
9:26 am
republicans believe that hillary clinton is vulnerable and i thinthey believe she is more vulnerable than she was six months ago so you wake up in the morning and say to yourself i could be president of the united states and that is not just conjecture anymore. >> ben carson finished so he lost his national campaign manager and communications person so that's a lot of behind behind-the-scenes stuff so they raise a lot of money but they're burning through it. >> 23 million in the last quarter, more than ted cruz. i think two months ago if we were having this conversation, we would talk about doctor carson being up at the top could he win iowa but two things happened, paris and san bernardino which i think hurt him. he's a fine man with an extraordinary life story but now that some events have overtaken the campaign, i think people are thinking he is not the right person at this time to be president of the united states. >> krist kristi turned out more than 300 people and walk you
9:27 am
with jeb bush's seeming to struggle to gain traction even with a new shift here is christy best positioned to be that kind of surprise guy? >> i think you are looking at either christie or rubio perhaps still bush. i've got a lot of friends in the bush campaign but i would say at this point either rubio or christie. i happen to be at that event. my wife patty liked government governor christie and wanted to go. >> i certainly did and here is the thing. people are getting serious about this again and one of the great things about iowans as he spoke for maybe 10 minutes then took questions from us two hours. >> which is very good at. >> he is very good at that. they're very thoughtful they are very thoughtful people starting to make those choices. they realize this is the month that we had to choose and just reminded me of how serious
9:28 am
>> now we are in 2016 and you remember it was supposed to be the sum of trump and then that dragged into the fall and then not dragged into the winter. it is trumped for real orgy think he's going to now nose know nosedive. >> the fact we will see the fall of trump. it was supposed to be the winter of trump but here's the question that no one seems to know. i spoke to someone who is close to the trump campaign yesterday, and what people don't know is this. is it possible that all of these people who are coming to the rallies are going to show up for the caucuses? does not seem he has a organization that senator cruz has put on the but on the other hand, they are showing up for the rallies. someone says donald trump is coming to clay county which has a population of 16,000, 1600 people show up. so if they are showing up for rallies and staying for a couple of hours, if they show up for caucuses, there are enough
9:29 am
they show up that donald trump could win. i think the fact that people say senator cruz is probably going to win, i think that is probably true. but there are enough people there. the question is will they come out to the caucuses. >> any chance ran paul huckabee santorum, are they've forgotten about your here or do they have anything in them? >> there is a sadness to the whole thing wins with santorum that two people that won the last two caucuses don't seem to be going anywhere. if your reno people say all the time i like her she has done well and debate, but she doesn't seem to have enough traction. >> thank you sir and happy new year. we always appreciate your insights and you will be with us on caucus night so we appreciate that also.

any regrets that you had to officially change to a democrat to run as a democrat? >> it was a hard decision because i'm the longest-serving independent in the history of united states congress, but i felt at the end of the day that if we were going to be effective and win this election only way to do it is within the democratic primary caucus process. no regrets. just feeling much better than i thought it would. >> what is the hardest part about running for president? >> for me personally it is being away from home. i have been in congress for 25 years. i have gone home and in with my kids grandchildren and wife around my own state to get to know and see people appear to have don't get to do that now so it's a little bit weird to not to be up to go home. >> question three, realistically, do you have to win either iowa or new hampshire? >> iowa and new hampshire are
9:32 am
win in iowa. we think we are down by a little bit but we could close that gap. we think we're up a bit in new hampshire. i think we have a shot to win both, but if the eight --dash the answer is they are very very important states, and we're going to try to do our best in both of them. >> question number four, hawaii just change the law there so you have to be 21 to smoke a cigarette, including an electronic cigarette. should that be a national model for us? >> that is a good question and i don't know the answer. clearly tobacco kills. clearly we have to do everything we can to take on the distributors trying to suck kids in to a very ugly and destructive habit but let me hold off on giving you the best approach to that. >> so question number five, what is the best thing about vermont? and you can't say the people so besides the people. >> what about the maple syrup?
9:33 am
and mountains and environment? vermont really is in many ways a way of life. i am very proud to represent my state, and i invite all of the folks in iowa to come see us. >> nice plug. we always close with the predictions of what prediction so what's your prediction? >> i think on caucus night a lot of people will be surprised by the results.

satan thank you sir this sunday, the one-month sprint to iowa and new hampshire begins. >> we are all in in iowa. we are all in in new hampshire. >> while donald trump takes aim at hillary clinton, by attacking dillos. game. certainly if they play the woman's card with respect to me that will be fair game. >> it may be fair game. but it's never worked before against hillary. will it now?
