republican presidential candidate john kasich hasn't spent nearly as much time in iowa as some challengers. but he joins us and tells us a idea he thinks democrats would agree with when it comes to tacking the national debt. plus, two civil rights leaders have a challenge for the democrats coming to a high profile event in des

surprise us over these next three weeks. let's begin with john kasich. ohio's former governor seems to be on a new hampshire or bust strategy in the campaign for president but he does top in iowa from time to time. he tries to educate us on his ideas and i asked him how he plans to educate our kids in a more affordable ways way so they do not end up with all of that debt. >> we've been hearing a lot of talk in the debates and elsewhere on education. so when the democrats what can you --dash you did not grow up her a rich kid. what can you offer as a republican to help families think it can be a little easier to pay for college? >> i think number one you must be able to get college credit
tv-commercial
9:10 am
you ought to be able to get remediation. in other words, you graduate from high school and go to college you have to take remedial courses which cost a fortune so we would like kids in high school to be able to remediate online. in addition to that, we want to be sure if you go to community college it could be as much as half the price of a four-year school. you should be able to go two years and i actually support three years and finisher last year at the four-year school. it would cut her costs enormously, in half or more. if you are in high school you take college credit courses you get remediated right away then you go to community college and finisher fourth year at the university. talk about a lower price tag. >> we seem to have that in this state with the state with our advanced placement where kids can get college credit. >> that's good. do all you can and when it comes to community college you need to make sure that all the credit
9:11 am
college is transferred to four-year school. so if you go to amend to college for two years you cut your expensive half. he went three years you cut it even more than half but we need to make sure the four-year schools accept that. we need to get to the cost drivers of these universities. when you look at administrative costs, they have skyrocketed in our universities and they don't control that. there are so many costs that need to be controlled so colleges can remain affordable. and you mark my words of the doesn't start happening whether i'm president or not, people are going to start getting their education online. let me give you an example. i hire young people to work in the administration that i have more on my campaign. i really don't care if they went to school. it doesn't matter to me. as long as they know first of all i don't care whether they went to harvard or whether they went to iowa state. they got their degree, they are

sometimes kids stick kids pick schools based on brands and their parents are paying for that brand right? >> one thing that strikes me about the cycle that is different for man from them the last one, it feels like you have so many more people who are mad this time. >> they are mad. >> and trumpet and crews have done well here by harnessing the mad people and harnessing that energy. can you do that or is that even something you want to do? >> people are angry because they think the system is a rip off ripoff. the rich and powerful lobbyists get all the say and i got back from me. i don't care what they say. i take their opinions, but at the end of the day it is my job to speak up for people who no one speaks up for an fat is what i have done all of my career. people who think oh he's just another politician, check my record. check the fights i've been in and the successes success is ipad and then you will see. most people want to run away
9:13 am
i want people to closely examine my record whether it is reforming the pentagon are taking on the oil and gas industry it doesn't matter. i'm going to stick with the people i grew up with. >> our next challenge for governor kasich's is the $19,000,000,000,000.01. you've upgraded all your old technology... so what about this? it's time to get into the new with ford come and get it if you really want it... new is ecoboost technology. new is a foot-activated liftgate. new is tougher, stronger and lighter. new is ford. america's best-selling brand. now get into a new focus, fusion, or escape with 0% financing for 60 months plus $2,000 dollars trade-assist cash.

john kasich was try to turn on the charm as he watched him work the room and valley junction this we thought out about 100 or 125 before so in a west des moines coffee shop. charming room full of potential supporters is one thing but i wanted to see how he plans to went win over democrats which would almost surely be necessary if he really wants to accomplish anything if he gets the job in the white house so i asked him for an idea of the dem but i guess get democrats idea the democrats would go for when it comes to bringing down the $19 trillion federal debt to get i think people get blown away with the debt when it is such a staggering number.
9:15 am
something you can offer that is pretty basic here that you think your point you're going to throw out there and your site will go forward and democrats will force even if it is just a small chunk, something we can see as progress. >> i've done this before in working with the and working with the democrats. we've got republicans who say i can't get anything done because they thought he thought the democratic legislature but i did i did though she did something with the democratic association get it done. i think the plan i have is very reasonable and i think we can get it done. it is all about certainty and uncertainty. if the people are uncertain about this debt or unbalancing budgets and we have a rocky bays, then businesspeople will business people will not invest and the most important thing we can do is create an atmosphere of job creation in the country. everyone is worried about protecting the homeland which is

when we talk about racial opportunities and racial equality. >> stop to think about stopped to think about it. they have been talking about it for years and have not done anything. they have brought it up. they're going to a voice vote. the vote doesn't come through and it comes back. i cannot think that this country would actually save say we're going to send 15 million children back to a country that they don't even know anything about you they've been here from the beginning whether they were born in des moines they into point they have a right. i can't fathom at all that our nation is great and brand as it is not undertake such a humanitarian project as that began know we have talked to to numerous times over the years and one thing i feel like candidates that are looking at our communities bring right now that is different is there seems to me to be an addition additional level of tension out there, and you know we saw some really, really high high-profile

police police officer and an african-american person was shot to death by that piece police officer. that happened in numerous cases of cross country and you see this will block life matter the small black life matter movement across the country. how do we challenge presidential candidates are must figure out how to defuse this tension so we can move on with. >> taking it back effect what mary was it back to what mary was talking about. we have to recognize the issue. we also treated the same purity of the issue of race. into america's we don't want to do with the issue deal with the issue of race. i think as long as a democrat demographics keep changing this is a multi- wife community. it is not mostly white anymore. in the school system and everything has changed. you come into the demographic change and forgive changes to give people of color and people of different cultures. until we come to the table tension is going to be their software there if not want to change.
9:24 am
what's your biggest challenge? >> i thought i taught my son many years of the police ever approach you how to respond and how to put your hands up against the wall. i was forced to my son the same thing right now would be don't say nothing, put your hands down is going to awful because a lot of people get killed so that the whole different dynamic cpu would tell if your son your son does anything. >> i would say don't say anything. it's a whole different world and for baby boomer like me, we were trained what to tell our kids. now people say what what what's on my black child now not with now? they're getting killed anyway. this is a different world. i've never seen a world like this. >> do you think it's worse than it was in the sixties? it was as tense as 10 says anything back then then obviously. are you saying it would be worse now? >> when the young people talk to me, they they're saying it's they are saying it's worse now.

the world with kids tell me i'm scared to walk across the street in in des moines in certain neighborhoods. what do we do to deal with public safety? we've got to challenge that. >> mary, what do you make of this? how do we defuse some of the tension? >> i believe that first of all in our culture they're coming from countries where the police have actually been the terrorists and they shove them against the wall and everything so they already have a fear so they don't know that we what side of the sidewalk to walk on and how they should act, but i tell them also all so that they have these rights. almost everyone has a little paper of the rights for them in protection and what they should do if they could stop by a policeman. i agree with wayne if they do give their name and address fans tried to be what shall i say, act as their expected to act live alone that they don't know

problems because they're not able to be bilingual and speak english and comprehend effectively so i would ask them to be very cautious when there stopped by the police and try to do the best they can. try to identify that person. know what your badge number and who was that even wasn't even if nothing else they can just say in their minds and there is something that we need to look into then we should be willing to look into that if you are you going to push them tomorrow night on criminal justice reform? i feel like both parties of talking about that more both on the statewide level and the federal level than we have seen in the last couple of years. >> i think public safety is the number one issue in our country. my first thing on capitol hill is mother goose is dead. mother goose has died. until we recognize the public safety's number one in and we've got to make sure all communities of faith whether it's in west
9:27 am
neighborhood or whether it's downtown, no one is getting away from this. public safety is the issue and that's what i'm pushing for. >> mary how will you push on howell you push on education? i believe for a lot of people that is the bedrock and and foundation of your future is a strong education. how do you push candidates to stand opportunities educationally? and i think they should talk to my grandchildren because when i congratulated congratulate us and told them how happy i am therefore not college and my grandson finished college and everyone is working on college, grandma, on view the reason for the whole thing, all you ever talked about with education because i was never given the opportunity to go to college. i work for one wonderful man worked for wonderful man for 27 years and worked for senator tom harkin. i've met some wonderful people that helped me, but education is very paramount to our future. my parents for were migrant workers. we did not have to work as hard
9:28 am
that work that hard either. what they need to do is prepare themselves to be a rational person or fireman or a policeman , to have a future that the future a future that they can look back and say i did do something. that is why education is so important and possibly more important to be up to speak more able to speak more than one language. more languages you can speak, better off you will be. >> representative with the we have 30 seconds left. if give these presidential candidates to challenge when it comes to education. >> to make sure that if we go hours is a great state. with the picture a picture of a small school and we pride ourselves. let's go back and make education very important. let's take each single child and make sure he and she is important began to make it available for all of us. >> these candidates better be ready tomorrow night because i

human time for my insiders quick fix or stuff, question one. how will one is the final few weeks as republican front-runner in iowa but when you grow up in huckabee and process form forces force is ongoing and type this right now. that is a lot to take but it would be a defining moment for ted cruz. he will likely do find that we will see how he fared the next few weeks. question number two, chris christie really bbs my on caucus night? he has a lot of friends that people behind him but does to see actually have a lot of support behind him was forces and national media creation by thinking he has a chance to surprise us.
9:34 am
the end of the road for huckabee paulson fiorina carson is each use person is each use of february 1st prize. question number four, what about the number 15? as we know, democrats need 15 percent support to be considered viable the individual caucus precincts. martin o'malley fails to give get that in a lot of places in his supporters to become supervalu valuable when to clinton when demand standards as second choice words. question five, iowa's republican chair jeff kaufman surprise me think he would probably pass passes record 120,000 office night this time i figured you would do a lot higher than that is tension in the field of 12 and includes donald trump. how that all brings us to the race. 120,000 would still only be about half what the obama clinton and edwards in and the rest turned off the democrats back in 2008. you would think they would be able to do better than that. finally, governor branstad wants
