good morning. i'm dave price. inside this morning, caucus drunk. the candidates have left town but controversy has not stopped. how bad this isn't what happens now plus iowa's freshman center will join us on working in a place so many people don't really like right now and in quick picks, how do you like your eggs? first lets to the caucus

long line, coin tosses, uncertainty over the numbers, what are the numbers plus spreading rumors and demands for an apology. let's bring in our insiders, tom henderson longtime chair of polk county democrats and right next to him that strong, former chair of the republican party of iowa. tom lets start with you. are you happy with the way things went? >> i think so. we handled things well at the we had almost as closer as many of the democrats. whenever you have a close caucus like this that's one questions become important about more important about getting votes counted right. this is an entirely volunteer effort and we had a lot of volunteers over the state doing the best job they could but occasionally it is not perfect. we got a 100 percent report by the next morning and i like to could. >> so one thing i don't understand were reading stories in and at iowa in the iowa
9:05 am
of these sites with the parties not having folks to run that caucus. and him acquire said they had someone and everyone that we're seeing stories that say they didn't so what goes there. >> i can only speak for it's great for polk county. we had people ready to fill in the gap immediately when one person didn't show up and we had someone go over there and take over the caucus and it ran smooth with no problem. it had been probably over a decade since the last time i remember a temporary chair not show up so we just had one but i can't speak for the rest of the state. i know in polk county we had the chair chairs in place. >> why can't we see the raw numbers? >> i don't know. i don't control bad aspect of the decision-making. >> should we? doesn't that give more transparency to the process? >> we have a caucus worksheet that must be signed by the leaders of the different candidate so when we go through the count everyone must agree on the counted and must be signed
9:06 am
caucus location if they were leaders from each campaign. the clinton and sanders people around polk county worked very well together. i heard nothing but good stories about how they helped organize the caucuses for us and they were good with the numbers and trusted each other with the numbers but those were all verified at the caucus locations location so there are sheets on that. >> is it possible and the way you do delegates is kind of a funky process how you figure this out but i think what some people want to know is conceivably did bernie sanders get more people to show up for him and he just didn't when the delicate equivalent? >> again, i have not seen totals on that. >> i think that's the question is that there really is no way for us to see that unless the party decides to release it. >> i don't know. i know typically the delegate count refcts the strength of the parties around the state but your point, if you have a thousand people show up at a caucus location where with a electing six delegates delicates
9:07 am
may say that person had more supporters so that is where the system may not work but i think that equals out when you go across the entire state. every candidate has an advantage and disadvantage in that regard. >> one thing that bothers me match is back in 2012 you get ripped for may be jumping to judgment may be given international pressure to declare a winner before you should have but i remember you can mount at a press conference and got beat up a little bit while doing it. i was surprised and maguire did not mcguire did not do that to answer some of the questions. if everything did not go as well as she said i'm surprised you didn't get out and get in front of this because she's kind of taking a pounding. we sell the editorial board go after her and this whole process in general. how did this go down? >> first looking back four years ago as to what we did four years ago i think we were remiss if we didn't congratulate chairman
9:08 am
incredible performance. >> more than 50 percent higher than ever on your side. >> we had over 100 percent increase in our precinct in ankeny's 13th precinct alone. but one thing we learn four years ago that i was impressed with, even going through that difficult moment, was how well the party parties party still worked together. there were no cheap political shots because they understood that we are tied at the hip on this and one thing i thought was helpful when the party went through soul-searching take a look at the mirror and see what worked right what didn't and have an honest assessment about what needs to be improved, that would be my recommendation to doctor mcguire once the smoke clears, have that honest demo them in honest we sell with all the fruits of that monday night and an incredibly smooth and successful caucus. >> i want to show what is written from that i was starting line this past week. he did kind of winners and
9:09 am
for about two hours on caucus night the entire national media unloaded on the democratic caucus process the lack of trained volunteers overwhelmed locations etc. and how do precinct precincts run out of voter registration forms? print a lot of people for hand, way more then you would ever need. how is that so as in hard? many places ran out in 2008 c would think we learned our lesson so tom, are you concerned that as a process this is getting kind of beat up? does this hurt us down the road? >> one thing we need to look at is this is becoming more popular which is a good thing for both republicans and democrats. we have numbers larger than ever expected before. one of the problems we have is finding venues that will accommodate that many going pushing up. we've tried as basically democrats and republicans in polk county to visit reserve every big room we could find and they weren't big enough.
9:10 am
great for democracy, but it is one of those things we must ask ask about with regard to the future how are you going to run the caucuses to accommodate large crowd smoothly? i think it is time to take a look at that. it is still fresh in our mind
9:11 am
>> mass, i want to ask you about the continuing going on in your side here. let's show the tweet that congressman steve king sent out on caucus night. you have some people perhaps you've already caucus that their individual location but this came out about cnn did a story that ben carson was going to go from iowa to florida and is the report said get a fresh set of clothes because we don't have drycleaners in our state apparently but king tweeted carson looks like he is out and i was need to know that before hand that most of them will go to cruise i hope. governor branstad has said steve king needs to apologize for this midst misleads people cruise campaign admits that some of their folks were spreading around that person may be dropping out. is that appropriate or inappropriate. >> it is tough to come together after hard-fought primary battle. first of all i think the carson campaign should be proud of their efforts. they got almost 10 percent in a very crowded field. >> despite all their national turmoil. >> exactly. so hats off to the whether he decides it is important for him to apologize to his constituents is not for me to say, but i think the focus needs to be on the successful efforts that ted cruz did have an iowa and whether it is donald trump's tweets or are ben carson's press conference, just the other day that kind of confused the issue even more because i think they started with cnn as a news organization. >> there was nothing inaccurate and what cnn reported. the inaccuracies were what was said about that report.
9:12 am
hoping time will heal all wounds. i lived to tell after the last caucuses so hopefully we can have an eye on the ball winning the election in november as republicans and really being happy about an incredibly successful night for iowa republicans across the state. >> it will be a while before was the presidential candidates come back to our state and ba with 40 megs of internet speed from centurylink, a family of four can all be online at the same time, streaming, gaming, or downloading movies. yeah, the internet's great, but i think hair and makeup went a little too far. yeah, that's not working. i much prefer the two-day beard, horn-rimmed glasses, just-slept-in-his-car kinda thing. yeah, i miss the rumpled crazy uncle look. okay. be "paul giamatti." that's the essence of this role. feel like a hollywood insider

for almost two years we watched nearly two dozen people travel out of state hoping it would make them present. monday night more than 350,000 of you showed up to caucus for your choice. andy schumacher captures what has been in a nun's unforgettable caucus experience. >> the wait is over. caucus day 2016 is here. >> i believe we will win. >> i hope you will stand up for me.
9:14 am
>> i think any candidate who wants to compete and wants to win in iowa owes it to the men and women of this state to stand in front of them and answer the hard questions. >> anyone who wants to be president can come to iowa and make their case. >> if i am on our nominee we will unite this party, we will unite this country i will be the next president of the united states. >> i can promise you that eventually we will have a winner tonight. >> senator ted cruz and texas declared the winner for the republicans. marco rubio running a strong third. >> the people of this great state sent a very clear message. after seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer to take our country back. [cheering] >> it looks like we are in a virtual tied. [cheering] >> what a night.
9:15 am
what a great campaign. >> iowa, we love you, we thank you, you are special. we will be back. >> god bless this great state of iowa. [cheering] >> join me. let's go when the nomination. thank you all and god bless you. >> so with the candidates gone for a while at least, it is time

elected officials again. easy to snicker at congress these days. the average of the public opinion polls shows congress has a 14.2 percent approval rating. in other words, six out of seven people disapprove of congress. i sat down with iowa's freshman senator joni ernst about being part of the dc that so many

>> it is difficult because i share a lot of those same frustrations, and i am actually in a position in the united states senate now where i can observe what is going on in the senate and the process behind it and can then go back home and explain it to some of the folks, but it still does not take away the frustrations that i have had it certainly is not alleviated the frustrations they have at home. so i visibly visited with a cattle farm and the other day and another farmer at church yesterday after i was done with church he came up to me and said i'm so glad you're working on this thing. it is a big power grab by the federal government. there is so much frustration. >> waters of the united states the expanded definition. a a lot of people are so upset. some of that is focused on the elected officials, but a lot of
9:18 am
of washington dc and the fact that we have unelected officials making very big decisions with serious implications on everyday iowans. it is really hard to cut through that process, cut through the red tape it is frustrating for everyone. >> where do you show people progress? >> there is a lot of progress and a number of things i am very proud of. we did pass an education bill this last year which was very important. i heard from teachers and school and administrators and parents that they were really excited about the legislation that moves through the house, senate and house, senate and was signed into law by the president. >> this is no child left behind. >> getting rid of no child left behind which everybody agrees was not the right move, was not doing what the original intent was. >> did you like the original attempt? >> i would much rather that decisions were made at a local level, and that is really what
9:19 am
we have corrected that legislation that was passed many many years ago. it brings the focus back to our local educators and our parents, much more state focused than federal government focus. that is absolutely the direction we should go with education because who knows our children? the people on the ground working with those children. >> you retired from the military, from the guard after a good number good number of years. >> yes. >> when you go back home, i'm curious. to me there is almost an entire generation of kids who know nothing other than as potentially being at war even if we don't call it more like we did were like we did way back when. what do people back home talk about? it they see isis and these horrific crimes against humanity's that these terrorists do, but where do you think
9:20 am
expand our efforts worldwide to go after terrorists? do they want us to build international forces? >> this is a very tough issue and you will see that in iowa we have had thousands and thousands of young men and women through this a reserves reserves national guard or the sons and daughters on active duty. they have deployed in support of these efforts to get rid of terrorists. i engaged in that process, was overseas 20032004 so having a military perspective it is hard to engage our sons and daughters if you think it's going to be futile but at the same time we have to eradicate a terroristic threat coming from overseas so as hard as it is we've got to figure out what is the clear and concise strategy for defeating those terrorists overseas in order to protect our homeland.

so many people are angry and anxious and and unhappy about their bank accounts country's safety and their family's future. i sat down and nbc nightly news anchor lester holt on what he sees in our state and across the country. >> i think the conversation has been driven and in ways certainly the immigration conversation was driven i think by a large consent by donald trump a large and large extent by donald trump. that has kind of gone up and down depending on what's going on in the world but that has been driven by outside events. it is really hard to understand what is driving the entire conversation right now. that is why come back to the sense of restlessness. i can't put my finger on it but

>> can you talk about what it is like to be in the chair and is it every night if you want to you can get a report about hominy eyeballs how many eyeballs watch you? what is that like? this is such a big seed to fill with so much history behind it. what is that like on a night tonight basis. >> i was suddenly struck with historical implications when i took this job. only a few people have held it and that is a big deal but at the same time i recognize this is not 1966. its 2016. people don't have to sit down and watch these newscasts anymore. i'm gratified they do in large numbers across the board but i am kind of feeling my way through it. my whole focus is the viewer first. my focus is that i'm the advocate for the viewer. not the smartest guy in the room but i've got great contacts. i can bring the knowledgeable peace people together and give you a dose of the day so in my

think of things simple and back to basics. i am tickled by a year ago nobody cared what i thought. that is one of the cool things about this position. >> you still have so many people watch the nightly news but we now have so many other choices with social media and cable so how do you see yourself and how is your products different? is there a a certain purpose you have every night? >> a term you hear sometimes talking about investment and flight to safety. i think that is what the nightly news represents. it is a noisy world out there with tweets and facebook and rumors and a soundbite here. and here is where you can kind of filter through the noise, sit down and we will kind of give it to you. >> but that noise, twitter, can be very distracting. >> we compete with that to a certain extent so we are competing with a whole host of people who are providing information like we are, except
