speeding through snowy streets. it all happened just after midnight on des moines west side. police say they were responding to a home invasion -- in the 600 block of park avenue -- when two men sped off in a car, leading officers on a high speed chase. it all came to an end here, at 63rd and park... where the car crashed into a ditch. officers say the chase reached speeds of 70 miles per hour at points, so they put down stop sticks. with flat tires, the driver tried to turn onto 63rd... but their tires spun out. the men quickly escaped the car and ran into a nearby wooded area. officers were able to follow their footprints in the fresh powder and arrest them soon after. the driver now faces charges of traffic violations and felon in possession of a firearm.

we're learning today that a union county murderer will not face trial... jerry dillinger admitted to killing two people and hiding their bodies on his land. yesterday he was found dead in his prison cell from an apparent suicide. take vo the bodies of his former sister in law and his niece's boyfriend were found on his land near thayer back in december. dillinger admitted at a court hearing to killing them both and disposing of their bodies there. he was immediately sentenced to two life sentences. lawmakers are trying to decide more freedoms. iowa is one of 22 states where public. now an effort is underway in the legislature to repeal iowa's public intoxication laws... that includes one that says it's illegal to even quote "simulate intoxication".

10- thousand public intox charges. supporters of a change say officers have more serious crimes to focus on. police argue the law helps them keep people from harming themselves or others. iowa landowners will have to wait a while longer until on the bakken oil pipeline. four days strait of meetings, the iowa utilities board say it needs another meeting. if approved, the 3-point-7 billion dollar pipeline would carry nearly half a million gallons of crude oil a day through iowa and into illinois. the next public hearing will be next friday. if the board still can't make a more meetings in march. johnston has its sights set on tearing up ground in town. "you see across the street a boarded up old decrepit hotel that's falling apart, it's just an eyesore for the

see it across the street." gladney's auto business on merle hay road has a clear view of johnston's north end diner. it hasn't served a meal since 20-08... which is how long it's been since the attached best western hotel rented a room. and now the wrecking ball is moving in... after seven years of conversations, the city has finally reached a deal with the site's owner to demolish the vacant buildings. the land will then go up for sale. demolition is scheduled to take two months. meanwhile, no demolition needed in grimes... according to the des moines business record.. the owner of gabus ford is planning a new 400-acre development. it would be located the west side of highway-141. though still very preliminary.. gabus envisions a 45-hundred acre development featuring locally owned restaurants... parks.. bike trails... and several small lakes. offices across the metro will be a little brighter today.

yesterday the iowa senate approved a bill to scrap governor branstad's plan to privatize the state's program. that is likely as far as it will go though... house leaders say they have no plans to take up the bill. unless the federal government steps in... three private companies will oversee the system beginning march first. president obama wants billions put towards warding off the zika virus... yesterday, diease control experts testified on capitol hill -- where congress is considering president obama's one-point-eight billion dollar request for emergency funds to fight the disease. there are currently more than 50 cases of zika in the u.s. and more are expected. disease control says a massive outbreak in the u.s. is unlikely. a local couple is proving love can stand the test of time...
