>> captioning by captionmax.crews shut down a major des moines road for more than two hours this morning. what caused the close-down. and an interstate is also back open after a deadly crash this morning. what happened and what troopers are still trying to determine. the news at noon starts now. news at noon front door open good afternoon. i'm megan reuther. thank you for joining us. two people are hospitalized following a shooting in eagle grove sunday night. it happened around 8 sunday night. crews responded to a call that a man had been shot in the 100 block of

they found the suspect and victim had been shot. the victim was taken to a hospital in clarion then transferred to mercy medical center the suspect was taken to a fort dodge hospital and then transferred to iowa methodist this time. the iowa division of criminal investigation is assisting eagle grove police with the case. but they have yet to name any suspects or say what led to the shooting. and our later newscasts. the iowa state patrol is trying to piece together what led to a deadly accident on i-35 this morning. jackknifed and overturned on interstate 35...just south of cumming. the crash killed the driver. investigating the cause. crews had to close down north bound lanes but they have since been reopened. this is the same area where a

over back in december. traffic is back to normal following a road closure on m-l-k and fleur ... around 9-20 this morning an ankeny sanitation garbage truck hit a light pole on m-l-k... the light pole fell across the roadway and police immediately responded... they blocked off the road from ingersoll to george flagg parkway but it's now reopen. officials say it is unknown what caused the truck to strike the pole. a grand junction man is in critical condition after a snowmobile accident. the d-n-r says 35 year old damion louk was riding west of boone yesterday when he crashed and flew off his snowmobile. authorities say he was going 60 miles an hour. he was wearing a helmet...but it may not have been fastened correctly because it came off. crews airlifted louk to mercy medical center in des moines. today, the cyride bus driver accused in a deadly hit and run has pleaded not

23 year old benjamin clague is accused of killing emmalee jacobs near the iowa state campus last december. today he submitted a written arraignment and plead not guilty ames police say clague hit the crossing lincoln way. jacobs later died in the hospital... bus video led police to arrest clague about a month later. it includes incriminating audio stop soon after to check his bus for judge if convicted, clague will face five years in prison. traffic is about to get slower out for those headed through urbandale today... the city is closing 100th street for construction. the closure reaches from plum drive to northpark drive. and it's all to widen the lanes... crews will also add traffic signals and begin building a new four-lane bridge where the road crosses the interstate.

governor terry branstad has ordered flags in iowa fly at half staff today... flags will fly at half staff until sunset tonight to honor supreme court justice antonin scalia, who died over the weekend. the governor and his wife expressed condolences in a statement yesterday. saying that he and his wife extend their deepest condolences to the family of justice scalia... he went on to say that he was a brilliant constitutional scholar. the passing of supreme court justice scalia has sparked a fierce election-year battle within hours of the announcement...rep

in washington were feuding over whether or not president barack obama should appoint a successor. scott mclean has the latest. as condolences come in, battle lines also being drawn over justice antonin scalia's replacement. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell quickly making clear choose presidential candidates following suit during saturday's debate. presidential candidate it's called delay, delay, delay. presidential candidate i do not believe the president should appoint someone.in california, president obama acknowledging scalia's death and promising to nominate a replacement soon. i plan to fulfill my constitutional responsibilities to nominate his successor in due time. and there will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and a timely vote. getting a nominee confirmed in this election year will be difficult, with senator mcconnell and his democratic counterpart, senator harry reid already at odds. mcconnell in a statement saying,

a voice in the selection of their next supreme court justice." reid pushing back saying, "...the senate has a responsibility to fill vacancies as soon as possible." without a majority in the senate, the democrats will need a handful of republicans to break ranks, including some facing tough re- election bids this year. the democrats already sharpening their line of attack. new york i think first the american people don't like this obstructionism. when you go right off the bat and say i don't care who he nominates i am going to oppose him, that's not going to fly. the senate is in recess right now. the president has vowed to wait until it's back in session before choosing a nominee. now if republicans were able to delay this process until president obama leaves office, it would be a record. on average, it takes just 69 days to confirm a nominee. there have been some long delays before but nothing like the 11 months that some republicans want to wait now. reporting from washington, d.c., i'm scott mclean. one name mentioned as a

court justice comes from iowa. jane kelly is a judge in the eight u-s circuit court of appeals. she is currently serving in cedar rapids, iowa. president obama nominated her three years ago in january... she has been serving in eastern iowa since 1994. iowans are reacting to the political noise... and some warn that it all takes away from the real issue. a drake constitutional law professor says a new justice should be nominated sooner rather than later. he says a delay could disrupt the process for many major supreme court cases. the ties that are likely with just eight justices...will force the lower court to resolve issues. he says typically, finding a quick replacement is relatively doable .. but this time he isn't so optimistic. we are a year away from a new president. if were three months i

different but if were a year away there is plenty of time and normally that would be plenty of time to go through a process but the polarization is so bad that's not clear it's going to happen the only recent case comparable to scalia's vacancy was in 19-68 under president lyndon johnson. however, johnson nominated someone the year before. the senate didn't turn down that choice until the election year of 1968 unemployment in iowa is at one of the lowest rates in over decade...just under 4 percent. the goodwill and des moines public library are teaming up to make that number even smaller. over the next week, they are offering free job search training for people looking to get back into the workforce. these trainings focus on a wide range of topics...including resume tips and interview techniques. one of the biggest tips they can offer for landing a job is to get out of your

sometimes frightening.... but... doctors at one hospital are finding ways to help relieve that stress as well as anxiety. an innovative study at cedars-sinai medical center in los angeles aims to ease the stress of staying in the hospital.

imagine being immersed in this peaceful underwater world... "oh my god this is incredible.." the woman whose voice you hear... "a shark just went by my head!" ... is not scuba diving... she's a patient in the hospital. "oh my god!" doctors at cedars-sinai in los angeles are studying the effects of virtual reality on hospital patients... whose real world surroundings can be sterile, uncomfortable, sometimes frightening. "this is an incredible opportunity to escape the four walls of the hospital." patients are carried away to different worlds... like iceland or the ocean. researchers have tested the virtual reality system with about 70 people so far. many say it's helping relieve stress and anxiety. "this was like the greatest diversion that i could have ever had." "ahhh oh gosh!! that feeling.. illustrated perfectly... by a young boy at c.s. mott children's hospital at the

reality -- in this case -- turning wheelchairs into rollercoasters! "i'm on top of the world!!" the cedars-sinai team thinks virtual reality could also be useful for women enduring long labors... and those having to wait for painful procedures. nats "screaming, crygood afternoon.. the agribusiness report.. i'm david geiger. there's a lot of proposals from the iowa legislature for funding water quality.. and iowa secretary of agriculture.. bill northey says it's likely they will end this year with additional dollars.. he points to iowa governor terry

quality.. he says it's set the stage.. putting this issue past the point of if.. "how do we create more funding. not whether we ought to fund, or we out to support a regulatory process. that has to the large part, been decided. we're going to find some dollars, grow that effort and we're going to stay with this non regulatory process." northey says that could come about in a number of ways.. it could be the governor's save proposal.. or other ways of funding. he says the legislature is still sorting it out. a voluntary recall of blue cheese in iowa was announced saturday.. maytag dairy farms.. based in newton.. announced a possible contamination of listeria.. in its raw milk blue cheese. the products were packaged about a month ago.. and included about eight hundred 96 pounds of cheese.. it was distributed to some des moines area restaurants.. and the newton fareway..

found in routine testing.. there have not been any illnesses linked to the product.. you can find the batch numbers on our website. there are no markets today in observance of the president's day holday... however... the colfax sheep and goat auction on saturday.. february 13.. saw 141 head of sheep. feeder lambs fetched the days high average price of $2.19 per pound, while fed lambs averaged $1.25 per pound. and because of low weight 15 to 30 pounders sold.. the 61 head goats at the auction saw a high average price ranging from $60.. all the way up to $220 per head. millions of federal dollars were awarded to the midwest for water quality.. iowa ag secretary bill northey and sean mcmahon.. with the iowa agriculture water alliance says the u- s-d-a regional conservation partnership program awarded nine point five million dollars to the midwest agriculture water quality partnership. which is co-led by idals and the iowa agriculture water alliance.. involving
