two major steps forward today...but critics say it still excludes far too many iowans. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm erin kiernan... i'm dan winters. two years ago, lawmakers passed a bill to allow iowans with a rare form of epilepsy to use medicinal oil made from cannabis. but the law gave no way for sick iowans to buy the oil in iowa. political director dave price joins us first on 13... this bill's supposed to fix some of those shortcomings and expand access... and it does...to a degree. more people could now get it. but there's still opposition from those who don't want too much access and prefer to wait for more studies and fda approval. that continued opposition brought out anger. maria...3351 let's all agree these excuses are just that...lame excuses, excuses not to help those sick and dying." the new version of the bill lets

lawmakers. 'i know that it makes a difference, i know that it helps legislatures to hear whats happening on the ground in their community, some are very well aware and some the issues hasnt been brought to their attention.' beth barnhill is the executive director of the iowa coalition against sexual assault. barnhill was joined by 80 other advocates spent their day lobbying at the capitol. the group is pushing for three bills this session... one is increased penalties for sexual misconduct in corrective systems, another would include the term 'breasts' in the definition of sexual assault.. right now touching of breasts is only considered assault. the third bill has to do with civil protective orders for sexual violence survivors. 'this is such a great environment to foster that voice and to link them up with individuals that can make those changes in our communities so they can be heard and have that sense of justice in their homes and feel safe.' all three of these bills have

they have failed to make it out of committee at this point. officials say a parent's actions put collins maxwell schools under lockdown. the lockdown was lifted this afternoon after police arrested ortan haywood. officials say haywood called a school and threatened several staff members. he was arrested this afternoon and the lockdown was lifted. haywood is being held in the dallas county jail. additional charges will likely be filed. a des moines restaurant is cleaning up after it went up in flames... crews were called to "china one" on ingersoll around four p-m. firefighters say everyone was evacuated by the time they arrived. workers told them the fire started in the kitchen, which they say is common... a lot of times kitchen fires are caused by someone not being present, unattended kitchen fires seem to be the leading cause of kitchen fires so anytime you are cooking make sure you stay in the area and be very vigilant. firefighters were able to put

we still don't know when the restaurant plans to reopen. meanwhile, a second person has died after a fire at a cedar rapids home... firefighters pulled two people from this mobile home on monday morning. ronald jacobs was pronounced dead at the scene. jacobs' wife, karen, died last night at the hospital. the fire is still being investigated, but officials think smoking materials may have started it. after nearly six months, police have made an arrest in a deadly hit and run case. police say 37 year old ronald hauser of van meter turned himself in "leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death" and "o-w-i." police say hauser struck and des moines last august. they say they were able to link the vehicle to hauser from pieces left at the scene. 31:55 it is important to us since the victim was not here to tell us what happened unfortunately that we were able to piece it together and find out what happened

des moines' roads will be ready for the next winter wallop... crews have used only half of the city's salt supply so far. crews have used only half of the city's salt supply so far. they begin the season with more than 15 thousand tons of it, enough to treat roads throughout a harsh winter. but stocking up isn't the only way to simplify seasonal work... a variety of circumstances, from big snows coming with long stretches without, to operational changes we've made to make our snow plowing more efficient. our salt use more efficient, and using our time labor materials better. the city budgets more than three million dollars per year for snow removal. so far, it's spent nearly two thirds of it. gas prices may be down, but dart's ridership is still up. the public transit provides about 16- thousand rides a day. this month, you can help update its plan for the future. channel 13's jannay towne has

reasons... but one factor is being blamed for one of the schools losing faculty. the university of iowa is seeing a big spike in faculty resignations... that's according to a new report by the board of regents. it found 90 faculty members resigned in the 20-15/20-15 school year. that's up 36 percent from the previous year. and according to the "iowa city press citizen," officials attribute it to salary issues. the university president recently asked the legislature to a nearly five million dollar increase in state funding to attract and retain its faculty. the board is scheduled to discuss the report at a meeting next week. the ankeny school district says renting its facilities for free is costing big bucks... for decades, the district has offered up its facilities to the city and local programs. but rising cost of janitorial services has caused it to lose thousands of dollars. so the school board is

shortfall. the board is meeting to discuss options next week, and will release details next month. some des moines students are learning a lesson about inclusion. merrill middle school participated in "disability awareness day"... several people with disabilities shared their stories with the kids. leaders say the goal was to open their eyes to new friendships... we are more alike than different. reach out to those people in your community that maybe you just don't talk to. maybe you've always wanted to ask them a question and talk to them. ask them to do something because everybody needs friends. this was the school's first "disability awareness day"... leaders say they hope to take part in it again next year. skies will stay mostly cloudy tonight and temperatures will hold steady in the low 30s. some areas of patchy fog may develop at spots. the winds will increase from the southeast helping to pull in more warm air. winds will be from the southeast at 10-20 mph, gusts up to 25 mph. temperatures will reach the upper 50s in the afternoon. the winds will intensify and some gusts may reach 40 mph on friday. that will take temperatures in southern and central iowa to the 60s. it will stay sunny and dry through the weekend with temps in the 50s. it will be slightly
