dupont-pioneer calls johnston home... for now. as the company prepares for a merger with dow chemical... both state and city leaders are giving it a financial reason to stay. good evening. i'm erin kiernan. and i'm dan winters. dupont-pioneer is already trimming its workforce in anticipation of the merger... with 175-jobs lost just since december. reversing the trend could come at a cost... and tomorrow city and state leaders will decide if they're willing to pay... channel 13's justin surrency joins us with more. duponts headquarters are in delaware...dows are in michigan and the merger has created a cloud of uncertainty for central iowas dupont-pioneer plant...fridays meetings from both the iowa economic development authority and the johnston city council to discuss a tax incentive program which requires job creation...it may not only keep jobs in iowa but grow them...

applying for state funding through iowa's high quality jobs program. the program offers tax-payer funding to companies for creating a set number of jobs. the program also requires a matching contribution from the city where the company is located. the i-e-d-a's agenda lists other iowa businesses under it's financial assistance awards discussion... but the details are hard to come by... the agency is not releasing how much money dupont-pioneer is applying for.. or the job creation goals tied to it. the lack of information ahead of tomorrow's vote calls into question the program's claims that it is quote, "administered in an efficient, accountable and transparent manner." despite the apparent secrecy...mayor paula dierenfeld... the city of johnston... and state are working hard to make sure pioneer stays deeply rooted in johnston... worked so hard with us in order to make the best pitch that we can to keep pioneer as a very integral part in this new merged company.' the same program has been widely past... in 20-10 john deere received a maximum tax benefit of nearly 15 million jobs. that works out to about 108-thousand dollars per job. authority board will discuss pioneers financial assistance application friday morning at 8:30 and johnstons city council will meet later at 1 pm to take action on the i-e-d- as potential approval... on the flip side, it's hard to question the transparency, if not the efficiency of the iowa utilities board... they held four public meetings last week... and will hold another one tomorrow. they've been taking public input for months... but still haven't decided on whether developers will be allowed to bury the baaken oil

have permission from the land owners. an eagle grove man now faces attempted murder charges for a weekend shooting... it happened sunday night along this street. police say marcos castaneda drove up and shot hugo salinas... and then shot himself. both men were hospitalized in des moines. today castaneda was released from the hospital and taken into custody. salinas remains hospitalized. his condition is not being released. a nurse's aid in knoxville is accused of turning one of her patients into a victim. channel 13's michel dasilva reports on the criminal charges she faces. police say this woman: 42 year old wanda sue vanwyk of prairie city stole cash and a credit card from a resident at the west ridge nursing and rehabilitation center in knoxville...also known as west ridge specialty care. the nurse's aid is accused of stealing the card and cash from an 80 year-old woman. 15:40:10--19 'the credit card provider called them and said that some strange charges had been

degree and thousands of dollars in debt. americans collectively owe more than one-point-three trillion dollars in student loan debt... it grows by nearly three-thousand dollars every second. so, we wondered: is a degree worth all of that debt? channel 13's stephanie moore crunched the numbers. a four-year degree sets up most graduates for the future but it also a four-year degree sets up most graduates for the future but it also comes with a heavy burden of student loan debt... get the degree to get to the job to get to those mid-career earnings.' the average debt for iowa graduates is more than 29-thousand dollars... slightly higher than the national average...but an iowa degree may have more value than those in other states...'at drake its absolutely worth it, we can point to a lot of outside validation that the drake education has value.' tom delahunt with drake university has the numbers to back it up...and iowa's state schools are not far behind... according to the u-s department of education drake, university of iowa and iowa state rank in the top four schools in the state with a big return on investment...80-percent of drake grads earn more than those with a high school diploma with an average salary of around 55-thousand dollars...that's 20-thousand more than the national average. iowa, iowa state and u-n-i all have above average numbers as well...with 76 percent of grads seeing a bigger paycheck post grad than if they skipped

"i absolutely think we have a more informed group of students who understand the burden that theyre taking on and know its going to set them up for life-long success.' now to the hard numbers.... the comparison between a high school diploma and a college degree over a lifetime... in our calculations we used the average starting salary for a drake university

salary for an isu journalism grad... and a high school grad starting out at 10- dollars per hour. we also made a few assumptions.... that a college degree costs $60,000... $30.000 of which is paid for with a loan.. and that each grad would pay $17,000 in interest over the course of that loan. we also assumed all three examples earned a 3-percent raise every year. so after the first four years... the high school grad has earned a total of $87,000... while the college grads are $77,000 in debt when you add in the loan interest. the drake grad with an average starting salary finally catches up to the high school grad after five years of working. it takes 20-years for the journalism grad. over a 40-year career... the drake grad earns one-point-8 million dollars more than the high school grad. the journalism grad earns just 220-thousand dollars more. the numbers show how important it is to pick a degree with a
