clinton bouncing back from her defeat in new hampshire to senator bernie sanders in nevada. >> the democratic primary in south carolina is on saturday. we're just eight days from super tuesday contest in 12 states. that could cement the race on both sides. we have complete coverage at this key moment in the campaign. beginning with nbc's hallie jackson in las vegas. good morning. >> good morning. this morning, the center of attention in this race has shifted here to nevada, where donald trump will hold a couple of rallies today. history on his side right now. no republican has won new hampshire and south carolina and lost the nomination. trump has the momentum. his closest competitors and the establishment try to slow him down. >> reporter: on his victory lap in atlanta -- >> oh, that's so much better. >> reporter: -- donald trump didn't mind the dark. >> get the lights off. turn off the lights! turn off the lights!

lights stay off after the protester pulled the plug. trump fresh off his lights-out win in south carolina. >> such a beautiful victory. such a conclusive victory. >> reporter: trump looking ahead to another first place finish tomorrow in nevada, perhaps unstoppable now. though his rivals are trying to. >> if you believe we need a strong contrast with the democrats, then we welcome you aboard our team. >> reporter: but cruz's disappointing third place finish pressure to perform in the super tuesday primary. cruz hoping for a two-man race >> rubio! >> reporter: pulling in his biggest crowd yet in tennessee, facing a new line of attacks from trump, who is refusing to rule out questions about rubio's the florida senator, born in the united states, his parents born
7:04 am
>> i'm going to spend zero time on his interpretation of the constitution with regards to eligibility. >> reporter: key to rubio's strategy, staying in the race long enough to bring together the establishment wing. >> we're still going to have our primary. it's a smaller field this morning than it was. >> reporter: the end of the road for jeb bush. the end of the line for now for his family's presidential political dynasty. >> tonight, i am suspending my campaign. yeah, yeah. thank you. >> reporter: after that emotional speech, the scramble for his supporters and his donors. and new this morning, the rnc launching a fresh attack ad aimed at hillary clinton for her performance in south carolina in 2008. >> the damage between the clintons and the african-americans in this country might be irreparable. >> the rnc looking at the general election as the head of the party reiterates the promise to back whoever the nominee is.

trump. expect to see over the next few days more endorsements come out, with rubio knocking down reports that mitt romney will back him soon. guys? >> hallie jackson, thank you. as we mentioned, south carolina is the next battleground on the democratic side, where hillary clinton hopes to build on her big win over sanders in nevada. kristen welker is following those campaigns. >> good morning. hillary clinton is focused on fund raising in the los angeles area. hoping her donors and supporters are reenergized after her win in nevada. the question, can she maintain her momentum. >> reporter: clinton had a big win in nevada over the weekend. >> some may have doubted us but we never doubted each other. >> reporter: carried to victory by union workers and african-americans who turned out in force. 76% of blacks in nevada choosing
7:06 am
>> this one is for you. >> reporter: clinton posting this photo to instagram, savoring the victory with her husband. trying to gain ground with minorities, sanders courted african-americans at a baptist church in south carolina sunday. later, urged his supporters to fight on. >> south carolina has the opportunity to make american history, and i hope you will. >> reporter: while sanders won 72% of young voters in nevada and had a strong showing among latinos, the loss raises questions about his ability to win more diverse areas, like many of the super tuesday states. sanders stressing, it's all about turnout. >> the voter turnout is not as high as i wanted. i said over and over again, we'll do well when young people, working class people come out. >> reporter: both candidates looking forward. clinton commanding a double digit lead in south carolina, where her ground game is in full swing.
7:07 am
voting for hillary clinton. >> reporter: aides close to sanders acknowledged the slim chances in south carolina. sanders is sharpening his focus in places he feels confident, like colorado, massachusetts and michigan. sunday night, both campaigns took aim at the republican frontrunner. >> we don't need to make america great again. it never stopped being great. but we do need to make america whole again. >> you want a candidate who is going to defeat donald trump. you're looking at that candidate. >> this morning, the clinton campaign is disputing that sanders won the latino vote, as polls suggest. arguing that clinton trounced sanders in areas that are latino. the sanders campaign is calling it spin. this underscores the importance of the latino vote, as super tuesday approaches and as this race heats up. willie and savannah? >> kristen welker looking at the democratic side.
7:08 am
let's get analysis. nicolle wallace served as an adviser to the mccain-palin campaign, and mark halperin is the managing editor of bloomberg politics. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> nicolle, the question, is donald trump unstoppable? he seems to have the momentum and has two big wins under his belt. >> flip it the other way around. can ted cruz or marco rubio win? i think it's a harder question to answer. it would be defying decades of political history to seize the nomination in marco rubio's case, after coming in third, fifth and second, and ted cruz's case, he hasn't won since iowa. it is possible. in my view, it is increasingly unlikely. >> mark, the argument from a lot of republicans is, if you get donald trump in a one on one fight, it's the way to beat him. i guess the question for me is, which of the candidates, whether marco rubio, ted cruz or john kasich, gives up the fight at
7:09 am
place slot? >> none of them give it up. all of them think that somehow, trump can be eventually stopped when it's one on one. you've got the contest here tomorrow, and then super tuesday a week from tomorrow. i think it's increasingly -- as nicolle said -- increasingly hard to come up with a scenario where any of the three can stop him, unless they get one on one. some republicans are talking about unorthodox supporters. maybe try to simply stop trump from getting a majority of the delegates. all three scenarios are, at this point, not just unlikely, but may be improbable, unless something changes. we need to caveat it. maybe trump will falter or something strange will happen. if you look at political history, trump is in a commanding position. >> mark, does the calendar favor him, the states coming up next and the fact they turn to winner
7:10 am
>> winner take all is a way that could hurt trump. say in ohio or florida, home state politician could win a winner take all state and get momentum. trump, both demographically and geographically, doesn't have weaknesses. a guy that can win new hampshire decisively and south carolina decisively tells you a lot of what you need to know. he'll probably win here tomorrow. a northeastern, southern and western powerhouse. it's up to the other candidates to decide, do they all stay in, and how do they explain how they eventually stop him? the voters need to decide this. right now, again, on the current trajectory, trump is strong. >> let's hop over to the democratic side. the clinton campaign said they were relieved they won nevada. a lot of people were looking at how it was going to spin and the story changed because of the result. she did well with african-american voters. that'll be important in south carolina this saturday. what's the path forward for sanders? >> i think she made it difficult
7:11 am
bernie sanders overtakes her. she's become almost trump-like on the democratic side. the democratic process makes it harder for an upstart candidate like bernie sanders. this was a decisive victory for her. she goes to states with much more favorable terrain for her and her message. >> saturday ends up being quite important in this race. good to have you both. thank you so much. >> thanks, guys. also this morning, disturbing new information emerging about the uber driver suspected of killing six people during a weekend shooting rampage in kalamazoo, michigan. blake mccoy has more on the investigation. good morning. >> good morning from kalamazoo. this is where that driver is expected to be charged later today in the deaths of two people and the injury of two others in the shooting spree. investigators say they have a gun. they have surveillance video. they are sure he did it. they still don't know why. >> reporter: this is the man
7:12 am
45-year-old jason dalton. a husband and father of two, allegedly shooting his victims at random. >> they weren't targeted for any reason other than they were there to be a target. >> reporter: dalton is an uber driver, and police are looking into reports he picked up and dropped off fares in the six hours between the first shooting and when he was caught. one of the passengers spoke with nbc news by telephone. >> i kind of jokingly said to the driver, "you're not the shooter, are you?" he shook his head or said no. got up into the room and they saw the news. i said, that's the car that we were in. >> reporter: uber says they're horrified and heartbroken. they did a background check and police confirm dalton did not have a political record. eight people were shot in three separate shootings. the locations, apartment complex, a car dealership and the parking lot of a cracker barrel restaurant. among the dead, four women
7:13 am
they had car pooled to save money and were swapping cars when the shots rang out. also dead, a father and teenage son who were shopping for a new car. >> you see the stuff on the news all the time. you don't think about it because it doesn't affect you. then this hits not just your community but your friends. >> reporter: loved ones fighting back tears during a sunday night vigil and struggling to make sense of such random violence. >> two survivors are in the hospital. a mother of three shot multiple times is in serious condition. and a 14-year-old girl who was pronounced dead for more than an hour yesterday, doctors were preparing her body for organ donation when remarkably she was able to squeeze her mother's hand. doctors realized she was still alive and rushed her into surgery. >> just awful, awful story. you never wrap your head around why that could happen. blake, thank you. for the first time, the

personally weighing in on his agency's fight with apple over unlocking a phone used by one of the san bernardino shooters. pete williams has more on this. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. the fbi director james comey says the investigation of what happened in san bernardino cannot be complete or thorough without getting a look at the phone. in the post overnight on a national security blog, he says, we can't look the survivors in the eye or ourselves in the mirror if we don't follow this lead. the lead is a phone that was owned by syed farook's employer, and that he used, which the fbi found in his mother's car. agents need apple's help to unlock it. apple is resisting, saying the company, if it does what the fbi wants, it would have to create software. if that software gets in the wrong hands, it could jeopardize the security of any iphone in the world. comey writes on his blog, we don't want to break anyone's
7:15 am
loose on the land. the fbi says there may not be anything of value on that phone, since farook destroyed other phones but not that one, and it was owned by the county. tim cook, apple ceo, said this case is about much more than a single phone or a single investigation. he says what's at stake is the data security of hundreds of millions of law-abiding people, and sets a precedent that threatens everyone's civil liberties. >> stakes high on all sides. pete, thank you. a powerful cyclone tore through fiji. death toll now at 17. authorities are getting a scale of the disaster and to deploy aid to the islands. 6,000 residents were staying in emergency shelters after their homes were destroyed or swamped. winds from the cyclone winston reached 180 miles per hour, making it the strongest storm in the southern hemisphere since

at home, dozens of passengers managed to escape minutes before a megabus exploded into flames. the bus pulled over outside of chicago on sunday afternoon after people on board heard a big pop. the driver got all the passengers off the bus. moments later, the entire bus erupted with flames and thick, black smoke. nobody was injured. the cause of the fire is under investigation. now to the incredible finish at the daytona 500. take a look. >> here they come to the line. this is the finish to the daytona 500. bouncing off each other. unbelievable! >> i think it was hamlin. >> after 500 miles, it came down to that. >> wow. >> they had to review a photo finish, determining that danny hamlin edged out martin truex jr. by 0.01. it's the closest finish of that
7:17 am
in second grade, hamlin wrote a letter to himself, wishing for his daytona 500 victory. i'm sure he described it just like that. >> let it be a photo finish, extra exciting. al, how is it going? >> like lightning mcqueen. >> yeah. we have rain in the southeast but watching another storm out of texas and on into later tomorrow, it'll move over the south. severe storms with possible tornadoes tomorrow. into wednesday, a traction in ahead of it, snow behind it. rain for the east. for tomorrow, we are looking at 16 million people at risk for dangerous lightning, winds and tornadoes. wednesday, we have a light risk from norfolk down to orlando, with 21 million people at risk. rainfall next five days. look at this, anywhere from 3 to 5 inches you get to the southeast. about 1 to 2 inches in the northeast. on the backside of the system, a decent amount of snow. talking from the u.p. of

sometimes the best deals are pretty plain to see. this morning on today food, five ingredient meals you can whip up in minutes. >> we have the executive chef of ocean oceana restaurant here in new york city. he has a shrimp risotto. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> let's talk ingredients. >> butternut squash, fresh shrimp, rice, sage and chicken stock. >> and your oils and your condiments are already in the pantry. they don't count. >> we like free. how do we get started, ben? >> we take a butternut squash and cut it in half. we peel the top. then we're going to dice the top into slices and then into sticks
9:49 am
to saute in a moment. >> all right. >> then the bottom, we're going to leave with the peel. we're just simply going to take out the seeds and then we're going to drizzle it with a little bit of canola oil. we're going to season it with salt and pepper. >> nice and easy. >> we're going to roast it at 375 degrees. until tender. it'll take about 15 minutes. >> okay. >> you're going to poke it with a knife. when it's tender, it'll go right through. when it's tender, we're going to scoop out the puree. >> let it cool off first. >> yes. right into the food processor. we're going to pulse it until it's smooth. just going to take a couple of seconds. >> you have a couple squash we're putting in? >> this is one squash. the bottom of the one squash. >> okay. >> then we've got our finished puree.
9:50 am
top that we've diced and sauteed. it's ready to go. this is a great example, where you can use one ingredient two ways. >> sure. now, this is, in a sense, the time consuming part? >> yes. this takes about 15 to 18 minutes. what we're going to do here is we're going to actually saute the rice in the olive oil for two minutes. >> you want to brown it, get it nutty? >> little bit. it helps it absorb the stock a little faster. so you add the stock in a couple additions. that's a difference between a risotto and regular, let's say, rice dish. you add it in additions. when you can pull the spatula back and the rice doesn't go back too fast, that's when you know you can add the next addition of the liquid. >> good trick. i was going to ask how you know. >> that's it. after about 15 to 18 minutes, we're going to add our shrimp.
9:51 am
>> looks like raw shrimp. >> this is fresh shrimp. they've been diced 1/4 inch. we're going to finish cooking that right in the rice. >> in with the squash. >> that we've already diced. now, if you can hand me the puree? normally, a risotto, you would finish it with some butter and some cheese. you could do that here, if you'd like. the puree, besides having another way to use the same ingredient twice, this is going to give the rice a creamy consistency without adding extra fat. >> beautiful. >> that's great. >> keeps it a little healthier. >> may any. >> you may. >> al? >> finishing it with fresh sage. >> the sage on top. looks great and smells good, too. >> that is fantastic. it's got this great sweetness to it. >> oh, man. >> fantastic. >> thank you very much. perfect and easy to make. head to today.com/food.
