from louisiana to florida. jacob rascon has the story. behind me is what is left of sugar hill mobile home park, more than 150 homes now just piles of ruble. some of them thrown blocks from where they were originally. two people died here, more than 30 were hospitalized, seven of those critical. and they have been searching for three people missing who may be trapped in the ruble. a desperate search for survivors.. hope nearly lost. some 150 mobile homes.. ripped to shreds. trucks twisted like toys..a neighborhood wiped off the map.. dozens were injured.. many of them pulled from the rubble.. barely alive. s/ colonel michael edmonson/louisiana state police "we're asking for calm for this area. we're asking for prayers. we need that..this community needs that." some 19 million people were at risk during round one of the massive winter storm. all the way to pensacola, florida.. where this neighborhood took a direct hit. nat: "we just held on to each other said maybe we'll make it

job. today the university of arkansas announced that rhoads will join the school's football program as defensive back's coach. rhoads had spent seven seasons in ames after being fired in november after six consecutive losing seasons. des moines police are investigating a shooting that happened near an elementary school last night. police say they found 18 year-old darrius colton shot in the leg at 3141 southwest 7th street around eight thirty p-m. officers searched the area near park avenue elementary school to gather evidence. no arrests have been made. police believe there may be two suspects. neighbors told officers they heard at least three gunshots. another shooting around the same time took place in eastern iowa. cedar rapids police say it happened at the cedar valley townhouses on j street southwest around 9-30 last night. kwwl says a 25 year old victim from chicago was found dead on

and a 21 year old was found shot in the leg and taken to a local hospital. police have not arrested any suspects at this time. the testimony for a boone man accused of killing his wife continues this afternoon. alexander fazzino is charged with first degree murder for his wife's death. his wife, emily fazzino was found dead in the couples bathroom floor four years ago. both sides say that his wife did struggle with addiction to prescription medication. they argue her path to recovery especially after police were called to their home just a week before her death. you're going to hear that after police had left, emily, who was slowly getting stronger at this time, get away. the defense says emily had fainted on the day of her death, causing her

iowa lawmakers pushed for five bills related to guns last night. right now, gun suppressors are legal for hunters and sports shooters to use in 41 other states... now some lawmakers are hoping to make iowa one of those states. 'i think they are a tremendous device, they are for hearing protection, a suppressor itself is not a weapon, its an accessory thats put on a firearm just to cut down the noise as a hearing protection device.' representative terry baxter introduced the bill...he says gun suppressors reduce the sound of gun shot by 20-30 percent... but opponents of the measure don't see why shooters can't just use ear protection. they see a suppressor as a weapon. 'i think there is too much danger involved to legalize one more offensive weapon to be a non-offensive weapon in iowa.' the bill passed the house 74 to

a bill that removes the age requirement to shoot a gun, and allows those on an a-t-v or snowmobile to carry a loaded gun. governor terry branstad announced that the centers for medicare and medicaid services has approved iowas plan to privatize medicaid starting april first. according to the governors office, the change will improve iowans health care delivery by offering preventive services beyond what currently is available. critics, however, are concerned thousands of iowans will see a disruption in their access to care. president obama said he wants the next justice of the supreme court will be an independent thinker with a strong intellect. obama revealed the characteristics he is looking on scotus blog dot com for a nominee to replace justice

he says quote "he or she will have an independent mind, rigorous intellect, impeccable credentials, and a record of excellence and integrity. i'm looking for a mastery of the law, with an ability to hone in on the key issues before the court, and provide clear answers to complex legal questions." end quote. according to iowa senator chuck grassley, president obama's nomination for the supreme court will never end up serving on the supreme court. he told the committee yesterday that he will not consider a nominee to the u-s supreme court until after the presidential election. in a letter announcing that decision.. senator grassley used the words of democratic senator harry reid from 20-05 at that time reid stated, "the duties of the senate are set forth in the u.s. constitution. nowhere in that document does it say the senate has a duty to give the presidential

u-s officials are investigating 14 new reports that the zika virus was spread through sex. the cases include several pregnant women. cdc is advising all men who have traveled to an area active with the zika virus to use condoms or abstain from sex for the length of the pregnancy. the senate health, education and labor and pensions committee met this morning to talk about the latest on the spread of the disease. hy-vee grocery stores are recalling its macadamia nuts because of a potential salmonella contamination. the macadamia nuts come in a blue 2- ounce plastic bag. the product was sold between july of last year and february 3rd of this year. nuts with the best buy date july 10th are affected. staff at des moines' high schools are encouraging students to look ahead to the summer to find jobs. counselors at east high school say the biggest difficulty students have

the des moines parks department in des moines is hiring they are looking to take on nearly 300 seasonal summer positions that include, life guards, swim instructors and rec center workers. good afternoon.geiger. this week the senate is going to try and deal with the g-m-o labeling debate.. by passing a voluntary labeling bill headed by senator pat roberts.. it's an attempt to head off what some senators believe will be a nationwide patchwork of state labeling laws.. that start with a mandatory labeling vermont law in july. iowa senator chuck grassley says laws like vermont's are intended to hurt biotech products.. there are some democrats.. like senator debbie stabenow on the agriculture committee that think different state labeling laws will not work.. but it's not clear if democrats as a whole.. will back a roberts bill. "they aren't sure where democrats stand on it, yet. but in our meeting tomorrow or thursday will tell us exactly where they stand. but it's going to be difficult to get this bill through the united states senate if it isn't bipartisan."
