battered and bruised....a corrections officer is recovering from an incident inside the mitchellville women's prison. this man was one of four two had to seek treatment outside the prison. the union representing the officers says the incident... described as a fight involving multiple inmates and staff... could have been prevented or descalated had more staff been on duty. it also says staff should be able to carry pepper spray. and here they got the pepper spray locked up in the captain's office and ya gotta run back and get permission to get it and by the time that's don the incident's over. somebody is hurt. an inmate could be killed. an inmate could be dead. an officer could be killed. a statement issued by the department of corrections says quote: the department of corrections is committed to operating safe and secure facilities and will continue to work to improve our operations for

the department of corrections declined to explain why the officers are not allowed to carry pepper spray. today the jury in the murder trial of alexander fazzino, heard testimony from the victim's father, even though he wasn't in the court room. fazzino is accused of killing his wife, emily, in their boone home back in 20-12 fazzino told police emily drowned in the bathtub and she was addicted to prescription pills. prosecutors say he choked and drowned his wife because she wanted a divorce. health issues kept richard beckwith - emily fazzino's father - off the stand, but a lawyer read earlier testimony he'd given. in that testimony, beckwith acknowledged he knew some about emily's addiction to prescription medication, but said emily was embarrassed to share those things with him.. he also described a three day stretch when she detoxed at his home. testimony of richard beckwith, emily's father: 13 "i walked into the bedroom and it was terrible. what did you see? emily was just absolutely frightened. cindy was holding her and cindy was trying to tell me to get out. emily was very, very embarrased

beckwith's testimony also revealed that he thought emily was happier than she'd been in a very long time....and that's when he started seeing alex fazzino become mean. the iowa supreme court has dismissed an appeal of a former d-c-i agent, who claimed he was wrongfully fired after reporting that the governor's suv was speeding on an iowa highway. it says the appeal of larry hedlund to the district court was untimely... because it was filed after the proper deadline. hedlund caught branstad's s-u-v traveling 19-miles per hour over the speed limit in 2013.. after complaining about the speeding s-u-v... which was not pulled over... hedlund was placed on administrative leave and later fired. he filed a wrongful termination suit... which was dismissed.. he then filed an appeal... which the district said was not filed on time and the supreme court agreed. however... some aspects of hedlund's lawsuit can move foreward. eastern iowa deputies say a man

and went off. black hawk county sheriff's deputies were called to elk run heights around 12-30 this morning. they found 45-year old martin lawrence unconscious. investigators say he was getting out of his car, when his gun dropped on the ground and fired. the bullet hit his leg. lawrence later died at the hospital. deputies believe the bullet traveled up lawrence's body and caused several internal injuries. investigators say nothing indicates that lawrence was reckless in his handling of the weapon. the polk county sheriff's office says they've seen a significant increase in phone scams... the exact number of different scams is not known... but in many of the cases, the victim is being threatened with arrest unless an immediate payment is made over the phone. one scam involved a criminal claiming to be an i-r-s worker. the con artist told the victim they owe back taxes. in another scheme...someone claims to be a deputy... and tells the person on the phone they owe money for failing to show up for jury duty. suspects also claim to be utility workers to collect late payments... and in one more

service claims the person owes money in a federal lawsuit. the sheriff's office say anyone receiving this type of call should not pay up... and should not reveal person information. hang up and report the call to law enforcement. the city of centerville has deemed twelve mobile homes in the city to be unsafe to live in... and that's leaving some people without a place to stay... the city of centerville has been working with the owners of the highlander mobile home park since last november. many of the homes in question have health and safety issues. on wednesday, owners of twelve home were told they only have seven days to find a new place to live. the trailer park owner jeff carley says the city won't allow him to rent out the trailers ... so he plans to simply give them to the residents so they can move back in. none of the people evicted have appealed to the city. two more iowans have been diagnosed with the zika virus... that brings the total number of cases to three... the new cases were found in women... one traveled to the caribbean...
