back in november. the crash killed his passenger, 22-year old scalicity perez. police say he was speeding at the time. they also thought he may have been intoxicated... but those charges were later dropped. mure claims he was being chased and shot at when it all happened. he says he was speeding to get away. his bench trial will now get underway at 1-30 this afternoon at the polk county courthouse it's expected to last 4 days. a florida man will soon learn if he will be released from jail while he waits for his trial in iowa to begin... 19 year old kevin ramirez was indicted in federal court last week... he's charged with two counts of "enticement of a minor," and "possession of child traveled to ottumwa to meet a 13 year old girl in october. that triggered an amber alert... georgia. a hearing set for today will out of jail on bail. a des moines man is currently recovering from an overnight on the east side... police say the shooting happened

17th court around 10-30 last night 22 year old dustin lee curtis told police he was at a friends house and was shot when he went out to his truck. curtis drove himself to a local hospital for treatment his condition is unknown but police say he is expected to survive. they also say they dont have any information on a possible suspect in the case. police are still looking for two inmates who escaped from a newton facility. these two men, michael amodeo and jessy foley, are missing from the newton correctional release center. present at a routine count saturday night around 9-30 and just after ten. prison sentence and foley was sentenced to 27 years behind bars. both men were convicted of meth charges. an investigation is currently out facility. information about the whereabouts of the two inmates should call

des moines police are investigating the robbery of a metro convenience store... it happened shortly after 8-30 this morning at the git n go at 11-42 42nd street. few details have been released.... but police say it appears the suspect in the robbery had a handgun. six iowa communities will soon get grants to participate in health care and payment reforms... this morning governor terry branstad and lt. governor kim reynolds announced these communities are receiving grants for the state innovation model initiative. in 20-15...the center for medicare and medicaid innovation announced iowa was one of 11 states awarded a federal grant to participate in the initiative. the communities chosen will engage in health care system and payment reforms over the next three years. all in hopes to better health outcomes and lower costs. building off of the work of the iowa health and wellness

police say the driver of this p-t cruiser took a turn too fast on shady lane drive last night. she ended up running over the stop sign at the corner and slamming into a garage. police say both the driver and her passenger had only minor injuries. the homeowners, along with their son were all inside at the time, but were not harmed. charges are still pending. a knoxville man is recovering after a dangerous moment in his own driveway.... it happened in the 16-hundred block of oregon drive. around 1 p-m yesterday fire investigators say a man in his 50s was working on a truck when it suddenly exploded into flames. the fire quickly spread from the vehicle to his coveralls, and his boots.... apparently a gas line had broke and released some gas, just enough that it surrounded his foot and caught his boot and his pants on fire the man's two sons were able to help put out the fire before fire crews arrived... but the man had

severe burns. he was life flighted to a burn center in iowa city. no word on his condition. the city of ames says it has one of the safest communities in the nation... "i've lived here for 30 years in the same neighborhood, and generally i would say i've never had the perception that violent crime was a serious problem." - recent f-b-i data shows the town has one of the fastest falling crime rates in the country. there was just one homicide in the study's five year span... and overall, violent crime is down 56 percent. city officials say it is thanks to police programs that build strong relationships with residents. but police officers say it's all a cycle, and those programs are only an option during a low violent crime rate. "and so, when we can do that, and we have the time to do that, we can get into the neighborhoods, work with some of the community leaders, work with some of the neighborhood association leaders on trying to solve specific problems in our neighborhoods." - commander jason tuttle - ames police department

ranked number one. your bus ride to and from work may soon look a little different.... over the next 3 days, dart is hosting a series of public meetings they are asking for input on what changes need to be made to better serve the metro. over the past 2 years, the dart system has seen an increase of almost 10 percent in the total number of people using the bus system. but officials with dart say they need even more riders in order for change to happen. they are asking for the public's help in adjusting when and where the routes go. and want to know what would make riders more comfortable. "is it amenities like wifi or more bus shelters. so we want to learn from the all of those types of things in order to really design a system that meets the needs of our future community." there will be 11 meetings over the next 3 days. with the first one already underway. if you are interested in attending a meeting....we have a full list up right now at our website. construction will slow traffic

labeling solutions markup. and farm groups are lining up behind this legislation they think will head off a thread of patchwork g-m-o labeling laws. which they say are different labeling laws in different states in july.. vermont will be the first state to impose a mandatory labeling of foods that have g-m-os.. farm groups and senate backers think that legislation will create market chaos and higher food costs. on thursday the senate ag committee will mark up that labeling bill. even though roberts released the draft last week.. it's unsure if there will be enough votes on the democrat side.. according to the draft, the senate bill would require usda to set a voluntary national food labeling standard for genetically engineered foods, preempt state labeling laws on both gmo foods and seed, and require usda to provide consumers with information on the benefits of biotechnology.. roberts says he is open to amendments to the bill.. he hopes it will stop the labeling law in vermont from going into effect... commodities are keeping with the
