10:34 pm
ow starring jimmy fallon." tonight, join jimmy and his guests --
10:35 pm
martin freeman. musical guest, the cast of broadway's "bright star." and featuring the legendary roots crew. >> questlove: 427. >> steve: and now, here he is, jimmy fallon! [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: hey! you made it! you made it. thank you so much for coming. thank you for being here. thank you for watching. welcome to "the tonight show," everybody. this is it. this is the big time. [ cheers and applause ] here's what people are talking
10:36 pm
of course, last night was the academy awards. and, yeah, i wanna say congratulations to leonardo dicaprio who won his first oscar last night. [ cheers and applause ] won his first oscar last night, 22 years after he received his first nomination. he was like, "do you have any idea what it's like to wait that long for something?" and hillary was like, "yes." [ laughter and applause ] but this isn't good, a beauty and fashion website posted a a tweet confusing whoopi goldberg for oprah winfrey at the oscars. this is real. check this out. look. we had no idea oprah was padded and we love it. [ laughter ] not only is that a little racist, but the two people you don't want to piss off are whoopi and oprah. i mean, those are like the two -- [ applause ] i don't mess with those guys at all. people are like, "oh, man, i wonder what oscar host eddie murphy has to say about this." 'cause i mean, we can get a a quote from him and he can
10:37 pm
>> steve: clear it up. >> jimmy: yeah. let's take another look at that tweet there. i mean, that's clearly whoopi goldberg. but after it went out, then the mixup sparked the #that'snotoprah. so, you know what that means, it's time for oprah/not oprah. oprah not oprah oprah not oprah oprah cobra maricopa oprah's copra deepak chopra dr. with a stethoscope-ra popera on an antelope-ra oprah >> jimmy: there ya go. that's it. [ cheers and applause ] we only do it once every four years. let's get to some political news. marco rubio seems like he's trying to beat donald trump at his own game. he said at a rally on saturday that donald trump has the worst spray tan in america. which led to the first time donald trump ever said, "you shouldn't judge people based on the color of their skin." [ laughter and applause ] a little rude. you're a little rude. a little bit. >> steve: a little bit.
10:38 pm
>> steve: yeah. >> jimmy: you talking to me? [ laughter ] you talking to me? actually trump fired back at rubio and said that rubio couldn't get elected as dog catcher in florida. yeah, then people in florida were like, "well, when your state is crawling with alligators, you don't really need a dog catcher." kind of just takes care of its own. [ applause ] so, trump and rubio have been trading insults for a while now. and this weekend trump did his best rubio impression based on rubio's history of taking long sips of water during speeches. take a look at this. [ cheers and applause ] >> it's rubio! >> jimmy: yeah. then people in flint, michigan, were you like, "oh, go ahead, that seems like fun. that's a good joke."
10:39 pm
great -- must have been fun. i guess you had to be there. everybody's talking about this. former kkk grand wizard david duke says he supports donald trump for president but does not endorse everything about him. you know it's bad when even the kkk is like, let's be careful with this guy. because we're not sure exactly -- [ cheers and applause ] >> steve: don't go too fast. >> jimmy: guys, today is leap day. [ cheers and applause ] february 29th. february 29th, leap day. which only happens once every four years. you know, like an election or the olympics or remembering to change your brita filter. you know, the once every -- [ laughter ] still getting those black dots. >> steve: yeah, what is that? [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: get this, i read about a 96-year-old woman who was born on leap year and celebrating her 24th birthday today. oh, yeah. her friends all think it's cute that she calls herself 24. her tinder date, not so much. [ laughter and applause ]
10:40 pm
researchers put penguins on a a treadmill and found that fat penguins were less stable when waddling than slimmer penguins. [ light laughter ] yeah. in addition to that other thing the researchers found, they have the best job in the world. [ applause ] put that fat penguin in a a go-cart and see what happens. put the skinny penguin in there. it's like i'm a living youtube. and finally the head of recruiting for facebook said that their favorite interview question is on your very best day of work, what did you do that day? which makes sense. 'cause at most companies the answer would be "i spent all day on facebook." [ laughter ] there you go. we have a great show. give it up for the roots, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: hey, everybody, it is monday.
10:41 pm
we've got a great week of shows coming up. tomorrow night the beautiful margot robbie will be here. and we're going to do the whisper challenge. then later this week, tina fey, pharrell williams and gwyneth paltrow will be joining us. [ applause ] and we have great, great music. friday is when they're coming. the who will be here on our show friday. [ applause ] i mean, wow, wow, wow, wow. it's just so great. but first we're so excited to have these two incredibly talented people here tonight. they co-created a brand-new broadway musical called "bright star." edie brickell and steve martin are in the house tonight. [ cheers and applause ] >> steve: come on! >> jimmy: we're gonna talk about their musical and then later in the show the cast of "bright star" will perform a a fantastic number from the show. and it's awesome. it's like -- it's broadway right here. broadway in your tv. plus, he stars alongside tina fey and margot robbie in the new movie "whiskey tango
10:42 pm
here. >> steve: oh! [ cheers and applause ] he's great. >> jimmy: yeah, he's good. >> steve: really good. >> jimmy: hey, guys, i'm a a pretty easy going dude. i don't have many pet peeves. but i do have a few. i don't like mayonnaise. >> steve: sure. >> jimmy: i don't like mushrooms. >> steve: right. >> jimmy: and i don't like bad books. yeah, no one likes a bad book. so to help you out i'm about to show you some books that you should avoid at all costs. that's right. it's time for my latest installment of my do not read list. here we go. [ applause ] do not read do not read do not read these books these books >> jimmy: before we start, i just want you all to know that every book that i'm about to show you is 100% real. these are actual books. you can find them on amazon or check them out at your local library. they are real. alright, let's see what's on my do not read list here. this first one here is for all you outdoorsmen. >> steve: sure. >> jimmy: yeah, that's good. this is called the "master secrets of crappie fishing." >> steve: what? >> jimmy: anybody can be a a master fisherman but takes
10:43 pm
fisherman. let's take a look inside. oh, this is a good chapter here. how to take a winter time crappie. [ laughter ] it's very easy, by the way. it's very easy to do. >> steve: how do you take a a wintertime crappie? >> jimmy: you just go to chipotle in december. [ laughter and applause ] in december. you go to chipotle in december. >> steve: i just took a a crappie -- >> jimmy: you just got to -- in december. oh, this next one is one is a a diy book. >> steve: oh, good. do it yourself. >> jimmy: do it yourself. >> steve: yes. >> jimmy: diy. i love those books. this is "do it yourself shiatsu," which he is not doing himself. >> steve: no. [ laughter ] looks like the one guy's taking a shiatsu. [ laughter ]
10:44 pm
>> steve: oh! >> jimmy: this next one here is, it's how-to book. >> steve: oh, good. >> jimmy: those are always useful. this is how to capture live authors and bring them to your schools. [ laughter ] live authors are not easy to catch. >> steve: no. dead ones, easy. >> jimmy: like finding big foot. >> steve: yes. >> jimmy: but i'm sure that's just a figure of speech. no one's actually capturing authors. set the trap, load the bait. no, this is about kidnapping people. >> steve: this is ridiculous. sick. >> jimmy: it just makes me sick. >> steve: disgusting. >> jimmy: you're getting too -- too mad. this next one's for all you animal lovers out there. >> steve: sure. >> jimmy: this one is "enjoying squirrels, moreor less" an expert's guide to backyard squirrels whether you love them or hate them. i'm into squirrels. >> steve: sure. >> jimmy: more or less. >> steve: more or less, yeah.
10:45 pm
enjoy some squirrels. well, sure. here's a guy. he's enjoying squirrels by putting a peanut on his head. [ laughter ] that makes perfect sense. this next one is a children's book. >> steve: oh, fantastic. >> jimmy: i love children's books. i have two -- two children. >> steve: yes. >> jimmy: i like to read them. this is "grandpa's new hip." [ laughter ] it's a great way to put your kids to sleep -- the doctor explained to grandpa that his hip joint was worn. he needed an operation called a a hip replacement. grandpa would have to see another doctor, an ortho -- [ laughter ] see you in the morning! goodnight, guys! [ applause ] i don't know, i don't know. i was so excited. we're down to our last book here. this is another children's book. >> steve: oh, fantastic.
10:46 pm
enormous carrot" by vladimir -- [ laughter ] vagin? vagin? >> steve: i think it's pronounced vah-jine. [ laughter ] where else did you think i'm normally gonna go? >> jimmy: i don't know. you guys, wait till the kids get older for this one. that's all i have for my edition of "my do not read list." if you have a book that you think should be on our next "do not read list," i wanna see it. send your titles to our blog at donotread@tonightshow.com. we'll be right back with steve martin! [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: hi, hi. >> how come i don't get introduced as the lovely? >> jimmy: well, it was the first two times. >> oh, i see. >> jimmy: exactly. >> stop being lovely. >> jimmy: i wanted to ask you really quickly before we get into the musical, you did stand-up recently. >> you know, i did. i did a little sample of stand-up with jerry seinfeld. i think that's how it's pronounced. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah. that's how it's pronounced. >> and i actually do enjoy doing stand-up, especially now because, you know, life is so
11:01 pm
and with stand-up, i can just go out and relax and enjoy the silence. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: was it fun? >> it was really fun. i was really flattered at first, that jerry asked me to open the show for him. and then, i found out he considered it a double blind comedy test and i was the placebo. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: unbelievable. >> now, do you think that joke worked? [ light laughter ] let me ask the audience. if you thought it worked, applaud, i see that it didn't work. if you think it worked? [ applause ] how many thought it didn't work? [ light applause ] okay, well, i thought it didn't work, actually. but beforehand, i put responses in these envelopes for marty short and jerry and myself just to see, because we had, you know, it's a difficult joke. and here's -- i checked, of
11:02 pm
wouldn't do it. marty said, won't work. [ light laughter ] and let's see what jerry said. these are great comedy minds. complete disaster. sorry to monopolize. >> jimmy: no, no it was very -- it is fun to see that. i loved your stand-up. i wanted to see it. i wish with you would have told me. >> yeah, you know what i always loved about comedy. i'm sorry to go on. we're going to get to this musical. i know we've got a lot of money in it and everything. >> talk more so i don't have to. [ talking over each other ] i love comedians' opening lines because i think they're really important. i remember i saw richard pryor once. and it was in the early '70s. and he was notoriously kind of crazy at that time, in a good way. and he was going to do two shows at the troubadour.
11:03 pm
and he shows up at 9:30 and he does one show. but i thought, you know, beginning comedian, i thought this audience is really going to be mad at him for being so late. but they weren't. they loved him. and his opening line was, hope i'm funny. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: to wait that long, yeah, it better be funny. >> i remember i saw sam kinison one time and his opening line was this was at the comedy store and there were a lot of comedians. he said, you saw a lot of comedians tonight. this is open. some of them were really funny, some were pretty good, but there's a difference between them and me. them you might want to see again some time. >> jimmy: and then he was sam kinison. what was your opening line? >> i had several. but the one i sort of ended up with. i'd go out and say, good evening, it's great to be here. no, it's great to be here.
11:04 pm
>> jimmy: yeah. [ applause ] thank you, both for being here. i'm sorry, i want to talk about this. this is so exciting and thanks the cast is here tonight. you have a show on broadway guys. >> we do. and it's in previews now. >> jimmy: how exciting is that? is it cool? is it overwhelming? is it what you thought it was? >> it's so overwhelming that when i'm there, it's kind of like the ocean roar in my ears. everything is like a sea shell up to my -- >> i think of it as the apex of my career. written with edie brickell, this musical that really seems to be going well. >> thank you. >> jimmy: so much work goes into these things. like i don't know if even people realize 'cause you see the show and you go oh, that looks like so much fun. but it's so much work. >> so much work. we're going on four years working on it now. we did it in san diego at the old globe theater. i'm sorry, you're here. you talk. [ light laughter ] >> it's the best kind of work, though. it feels like play because you get to -- when you love your work, it is
11:05 pm
and our collaborative team, the most talented and fun loving people. and they put all their skill, all their hearts into everything that we're offering and they make it bigger and bigger and better. and i've never seen anything so exciting in my whole life. >> jimmy: really? >> yeah. >> and the, you know, the talent in the cast -- first of all we have a -- i can't mention everybody's name, but the cast is so talented. to hear your songs that we wrote together, edie wrote the lyrics. sung by these people, some of them men. and we haven't heard our songs by a man singing. and it's just thrilling to hear the songs. >> jimmy: how does it all start? you started writing one song together on an album you were doing? how did it begin? >> the one song, the very first banjo melody and composition that steve sent to me i heard it and i was inspired to sing, "the sun's gonna shine again." and that's the song that our musical cast is about to sing for you guys tonight. >> well, not about to, but in a
11:06 pm
>> we have to wait a long time. >> jimmy: no. not going to be a long time, but it's fun. i would be nervous if i went and did this and i wrote this and then you're watching and you go some bits work, some bits don't. >> that's what's called taking the show out of town. you get to see it. we did it in san diego. the audience was really kind. you think about it at night and you start to rearrange things. we did it in d.c. at the kennedy center and it's better and it's shaped more. then we make a few changes here and there. new jokes, new lines. >> new songs. >> new songs. >> jimmy: really? new songs as well. >> mike nichols told me once, never go to the birthday party of someone who has written a a musical. and i said, why? and he said, because they'll cut from the show. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, that's like an album right there. what's this play about? can you say what it's about? >> well, you know kind of a it's not a deep mystery or anything. tell.
11:07 pm

[ light laughter ] >> jimmy: you almost chose a a different career path. you were almost a professional squash player. >> well, that was what i thought i was going to be until i was 14 or 15. >> jimmy: really? >> from the age of nine i thought i would be a squash player. >> jimmy: was mom and dad into squash? >> no. we just, we ended up living in a place there were squash courts and, i had a talent for it. i never knew i would have a a talent for it. but i was good at it. my hand eye coordination is pretty good. and i practiced for hours and hours. and i was super, super fit as a a 9-year-old. i would be running two miles -- [ laughter ] no, yeah. i was. i was. >> jimmy: again, we're going to get to your -- >> there's just no proof.

>> okay. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: can you bring your 9-year-old self back on next time you're here? >> no, but i thought that's what i was going to do. >> jimmy: what made you stop? >> i fell out of love with it. i'm very grateful that i did. because then i joined the youth theater. i went on 15, local youth theater near london where i grew up. and thank god because my career would have been over as a a squash player by the age of about 29, you know. and now here i am at 30, and i'm still working. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: exactly, yeah. well you're in this great new movie "whiskey tango foxtrot" with the great tina fey, our pal. >> the great tina fey, yeah. >> jimmy: and margot robbie. and this is based on the book. >> yes. written by kim barker. >> jimmy: kim barker. >> yes. >> jimmy: war journalist. >> yes. >> jimmy: and her, it's a best selling book. but this is -- you guys got good chemistry, you and tina fey. >> well, thanks. i had met her a couple of times before. >> jimmy: very difficult to work with. >> yeah. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: absolutely. almost impossible. >> she's a good actor, but a a terrible person.
11:17 pm
that. i've always said that. jinx. yeah. almost said it at the same yeah. >> it's hard to get both right. but she's very -- she's easy and i like her. that, too. [ laughter ] i said that she's easy. [ applause ] since the first week i met her. >> jimmy: she's easy. >> by the way, if i can jump in, i saw the movie and it is >> jimmy: oh really? there you go. >> i have no -- well, i have a a little piece of it. [ laughter ] but it was fantastic and martin was incredible. >> thank you very much. >> jimmy: you are great in the film. >> have you seen it? >> jimmy: yes, absolutely. >> you're not just making that up? [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: my god. it's my job. i have to. yeah. >> you're not just saying it because he said it. >> jimmy: well -- >> partly. >> jimmy: partly. yeah. [ light laughter ] he didn't bring it up, i wasn't going to say anything. >> why wouldn't he? >> jimmy: he's the one that said he liked it. >> i haven't seen it. [ laughter ] [ applause ] >> jimmy: he gets me every time. [ laughter ] but we will. we're going to get around to it. wel'll get around to it.
11:18 pm
>> jimmy: is it hard to do dramatic with tina or -- because it's funny. >> yeah >> jimmy: and i know robert carlock wrote a -- yes. >> jimmy: -- who is funny, funny, funny guy. >> he is, yes. i mean, you know -- both of them were behind "30 rock" and "kimmy schmidt." you know. and their chemistry i think as writer and writer performer in this instance is brilliant. you know. they know each other very well. and they know what makes each other laugh and what works for each other. >> jimmy: you were saying backstage you had to do the most embarrassing thing you ever had to do as a grown man. >> yeah. i'm not sure whether for anyone else it will translate. i was in the middle of the day having to sing a-ha's "take on me" in karaoke kind of drunk. and i'm playing serious glaswegian in this film. very, very, very scottish in this film. and so doing "take on me" pretending to be drunk in the middle of the day in front of a a lot of disinterested extras was very humiliating. [ light laughter ]
11:19 pm
>> jimmy: yeah. >> and i was truly dying, dying inside. >> jimmy: why? >> i don't really know. like take four, i was just like looking around, people didn't really give a [ bleep ]. [ light laughter ] looked over at tina, she didn't give a [ bleep ] either. [ light laughter ] then fortunately, john and glenn, the directors were so positive. i think they saw that i was caving in. and i wanted to leave. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i wanted to sort of leave the arena. and they were like -- i went back to my trailer and they brought me a little karaoke set, you know. just as a kind of comradely gesture. >> jimmy: you're supposed to be drunk singing. so you don't have to sound good. >> no, i don't. but i think, i felt i wasn't acting good. and that said, you know, that was a different thing. >> jimmy: see, if edie had to do karaoke and she didn't sound good, that would be embarrassing. >> of course. >> jimmy: she's edie brickell. >> of course, of course. >> jimmy: but yeah, you are -- >> i'm certainly allowed to sing badly. >> jimmy: yeah. >> and i don't mind singing badly, but if you kind of, act in a way that you think is not great, that's not a good feeling. >> jimmy: yeah. well, acting drunk. i do it every night on the show. [ light laughter ] >> yeah, yeah, yeah. >> jimmy: worked for me. [ light laughter ]
11:20 pm
of the movie. here is you and tina fey. this is you have kind of a a drunken night together. >> kissy time. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: yeah, kissy time. that was the original title of the film. >> it was. kissy time. we agonized over that. >> jimmy: and you changed it to "whiskey tango foxtrot." >> mistake. >> jimmy: but it was "kissy time." anyways, here's martin freeman and tina fey in "whiskey tango foxtrot" take a look at this. >> like a good shag. >> okay, let's try to be adults here. >> i thought we were. >> obviously this is just a >> nope, that's not what this is. >> you don't need to be gallant. >> i'm serious. i fancy you. kim baker. i do. along with dozens of women in this country, actually, yes. >> no, you didn't. because this is not me. i would never do this. >> precisely.
11:21 pm
