network. they were arrested in december 2015 -- december 2013. they must remain in prison pending this new hearing. >> jailed for journalism. these images were taken during their first trial. human rights groups say it should be released immediately not try them out again. the journalists were court for the brief hearing. the verdict was a blow for relatives who hoped they would get bail. but peter's parents said that he would stay strong. >> we know that he would be positive and not downcast.

we are confident that whatever distance we still have to run we will get to the finishing line. >> the producer tweeted from the hospital where he has had surgery for an old injury. he called the retrial a milestone towards victory. outside of court, his fiancee said they will marry, even in jail. he will keep struggling for his cause. he is not only writing for his freedom, he is fighting for the freedom of the press and expression. we will keep fighting for this, a retrial means a very lengthy process. it can take up to a year. >> today's ruling leaves the three journalists behind bars. they spent more than a year and a high-security prison complex.
7:34 pm
this is expected to beginning within a month. lawyers say at the first hearing they will apply for bail. >> this was peter before his arrest. it is now banned and repressed under egypt's authoritarian leadership. cairo news al jazeera am owned by qatar have denounced this. many believe that greste and his colleagues were targeted because of joe half's support for the islamic stop.images like this have damaged egypt greatly. >> let's get more now. tell us more about the reaction from within egypt to this. collect certain that the

reaction from the families, the relatives has been pretty mixed. initially in court, in the courthouse, they were stunned. we saw family members standing in the core looking absolutely shocked by the outcome of the ruling. they have had high hopes, they might see the three men being released on bail and one of the lawyers was saying just minutes before the verdict came out that he believed that they would be freed, possibly within a few hours. initially, there was a great sense of disappointment. i think the families look in more detail at the fact that a retrial has been ordered off that indicates that the initial trial was flawed and that verdict has been set aside. technically, this means that within the prison, the three accused are no longer regarded as convicts and they will not be wearing convicts close. they have a new trial which is
7:36 pm
expected to get underway within weeks. here in the country the reaction has been quite muted. we have no statement or commented many times. they have said several times in the past that he would not interfere in this case. now that we have the second trial coming up, the judicial possis continues. that rules out the possibility of the pardon. >> what about the latest stage 12 the process has run its course? >> this is certainly a possibility. it is possible for the president to pardon all three defendants. he did suggest that a recent interview that that was under consideration as a way to resolve the affair. something else that is being looked at why the families is the option of deportation. a new law was introduced in
7:37 pm
november which allow foreigners who are on trial or convicted to be deported to their home countries. what are the other accused holds both egyptian and canadian citizenship. the families have said they have formally applied to the authorities for the men to be deported. now, is unclear if that request will be granted. this is new territory, this regulation has been brought into the time it seemed like it was tailor-made for this case. that would give the president another way to resolve matters but it would not bring a resolution for the cues in this case. >> thanks for bringing us up to date. france's crash investigation

money. >> on the morning after, the floral tributes were brought to the scene, the new year disaster has left the country in shock and facing difficult questions. the state media is calling it a wake-up call. taken just 20 minutes or so before midnight, these photos show the police struggling against the sheer weight of the crowd, unable to rescue or treat those caught in a deadly crash. the authorities have been caught off guard, despite the fact that this year's celebrations because of public safety concerns had already been scaled back the crowds to a minimum. at hospitals across the city relatives of the dead and injured faced a discussion wait for news. >> i just want to know what is going on in the hospital. many have been asking the

hospitals give us a list of the injured, but nobody got back to us. >> of people out enjoying the first day of the new year, there is little sign of last night's chaos today. a store waterfront area is one of the showcase cities has been cleared away with brisk efficiency, but it happened here at all, it will cost you concern and the chinese president himself has called for the english -- a speedy inquiry. but whatever the cause, it turned the night of celebration into a personal tragedy for so many. >> the brazilian president has been sworn in for a second term in office. she was reelected by vowing to get the economy growing again and promising to extend social welfare programs but her government is facing a major corruption scandal.

7:45 pm
public spending, can she afford to keep doing that? >> well, now is a different moment. she has faced a lot of criticism for the government. now she has it all is the need to make adjustments. she has named a new finance minister a name that please the markets and seen as someone who can make the adjustments necessary, but this also implies some unpopular measures that may affect the public and it will be tricky to balance how many of these cuts are made and how much she can keep making the social improvements and the social programs for which the workers party is well-known and for which it has received many of its votes in the past. >> to stay with us here on bbc news. the cost of climbing everest is coming down.
