>> i am seeking our community, the city we love become tonight and for the rest of the summer. joyce: a frightening night of violence in milwaukee. we have breaking of information on unrest in the streets a here from the father of the armed man shot and killed by police. >> we are all just trying to keep the community together. joyce: plus, how neighbors are given with the chaos in the action taken tonight. kathy: our life team coverage starts now. we have a team of reporters on the big story coverage and tonight, a special one-hour edition where we are going to go all the way through 6:00. joyce: let's get you up-to-date

provided an update. there are a total of 17 arrests last night, most were disorderly conduct, most for burglary. several swap cars were vandalized. six businesses were destroyed by fire. they have been treated and released from hospitals. the national guard has been activated and is on standby. milwaukee mayor says this continues to be a volatile si we do not know what is going to happen if we have a flareup tonight like we had last night. if you love your son and you love your daughter, you love your grandchild, tell them to stay away from this area, stay away from this area. joyce: the police chief will make the call whether or not the national guard will be diploid. the chief also spoke at the briefing this afternoon.

more about the police shooting that sparked the unrest. colleen: they were here this afternoon. the chief, the mayor and the council president and they offered to details about the officer and the suspect involved in yesterday shooting. >> that still photo demonstrates without question that he had a gun in his hand. colleen: reporters he saw a still photo taken from the body camera of the officer. the 23-year-old was armed. >> i want our community to know that. he had a gun in his hand. colleen: the chief says he pulled the suspect over because he was in a suspicious car. the officer got out of his squad car, the suspect running from his car and was cornered. >> it was very fast.

. the individual to turn to the officer with a firearm in his hand. you cannot tell when the officer discharges because the body cameras, there is a 32nd delay before the audio takes on. --kicks on. colleen: the officer involved is now the target of a threat. >> he happens to be african-american. he is a very active officer. he has been staying with relatives. colleen: the chief says that the suspect had more ammunition than the officer confronted. 23 rounds, and we are also told by the chief of the suspect had a lengthy metal record, an arrest record but we did check court records and they indicate several of those cases that he

dismissed. here at the police administrative building, colleen henry, wisn 12 news. joyce: this is a little over an hour ago, protest at thieves seven police headquarters -- district seven headquarters. there was a group of about 25 people. officers were watching. the group eventually disperse. wisn 12 news mike anderson spent the day in the neighborhood. kathy: h of the suspect. mike: i did speak with him. i also spoke with a lot of other people out here right next to the bp gas station. this is one of the businesses that burned overnight. we saw a lot of people including some starting to scatter and leave that they were before holding hands across the street and holding a vigil. there are many people at the park throughout the day praying

and we ran into the father of the suspect this afternoon. his name is patrick smith and he is the father of smith shot by police. we caught up with them as he walked among the people that were here praying and holding the vigil, condemning the burnings last night. he told us his son was surrounded a culture that glorifies guns and that might have led up to what happened. >> models, this is what you get. mike: he also said that his son did not have good role models in his life and he counted himself

epic police presence at the bp station. a number of people that were here earlier today said they came from church and it would be back tonight praying again for peace. reporting live tonight, mike anderson, wisn 12. joyce: can you tell us a little bit more about what is going on in the neighborhood? mike: when we first rolled up this morning, the first thing we saw was people out here picking up trash and cleaning of course, people had a lot of things on their mind that they wanted to say, some condemning the burning of this gas station because it is where they gassed up. a woman said she comes are often come her grandkids, kids coming here to buy their snacks and now they have no place to go. we heard the same about the other buildings that were burned in the neighborhood out here. i felt an aura of sadness out

violent talk or anything like that. these were people that live in this neighborhood, sherman park, living near for a while and they know that their homes are here, families of vigor, good homes, good people and they do not want this kind of stuff in the neighborhood. that is what they were out here saying today and that is what we heard from everyone that was out here today. kathy: thank you. that was one of six businesses damaged or destroyed by fire. we are outside an auto parts store it was also destroyed by fire. joyce: he spoke with governor walker about his help keep peace. kent: i did. the governor stressed repeatedly this move is just a precaution in the event of more escalating violence, the kind that we saw here last night. what you see behind me right now is the prayer group. a lot of folks gathered around, holding hands and singing, very different scene that played out during the overnight hours. that is the reason some of the

this morning come a last night that the governor is putting the national guard in place. the guard members will not be mobilized unless they are absolutely needed. >> we have received several hours of training in terms of rules and engagement and what is the specific time to be called upon. kent: governor walker spelled out the plan for 125 members of the national guard 32nd military police company to put them on standby, close by if violence in the city once again gets out of control. he said there's a reason he is acting quickly. >> would escalate, and what more would need to be done, not just last night that the coming days. sadly, we have seen it elsewhere around the country in my sense in states with the governors waited too long, it escalates. our hope is that we deescalate. kent: the governor stresses the guard members are only here is a backup and only if necessary, a sentiment accurate by the mayor. >> the national guard will be activated but it will not be

a grocery store looted in this area. in this neighborhood's, fire spreading your 55th street. the o'reilly auto parts between show you, that caught fire second and then a few minutes later, flames a rough it from the front window of the jet beauty on the corner, a few feet away from the o'reilly auto parts store. this morning, fire crews were called back to the scene because of reports o smoke. meanwhile, up the street, the bank, they harris bank boarded up the area where the third fire broke out. firefighters needed to get to the second story window in the board building -- and boarded at the building. down the street, play 2nd street, pjs supermarket was the

above the scene and news chopper 12, wisn 12 news. joyce: natalie have you up-to-date, sheriff clark is addressing the violence right now. kathy: he is speaking at the milwaukee station. >> you hold people accountable for parenting. it is a lifestyle choice. sometimes that means that would go out and engage in certain behaviors that society says, we are not going to put up with. that is when the criminal justice prosecutor's office comes in. i look around at everybody in this room that is hurt me over the last five years talking about the role of the criminal justice system, the prosecutor's office. the law practices in this area and part of the county. i do not know, i guess people do not think it played a big role. we do not see just not last

sparked by a fatal officer-involved shooting yesterday afternoon. over the span of several hours last night, six fires were sent around the sherman park neighborhood. seven squad cars were damaged and four officers were hurt as was a teenage girl. we know that president obama has been briefed about the event and is asked his advisers to keep them updated on any new developments. the national guard is being activated to help police but not deployed unless she flagged asker a closer look at the neighborhood at the center of the unrest. kathy: what the mayor says and you need to know about the people living there. joyce: plus coming here from the neighbors.

you heard him reference a particular neighborhood. at the end of june and the beginning of july, sherman park west cc and of confrontation between officers and sheriff deputies. where this took place, for those of you not familiar with the area. kathy: it is on the northwest side of milwaukee, west of life 33. the violence last i was concentrated in the neighborhood. this shows what he six fires were started overnight. the police chief started -- talked about gunfire. activations in the area between 30th and 51st street. news chopper 12 flew above many of the fires. we are going to take a look at video showing smoke and flames at the bp has station burning all night. the o'reilly auto parts store also burned for several hours. just across the street, a fire started at the jet beauty supply

joyce: we went to give you a check on the forecast. kathy: lindsey slater is here. it was a beautiful day. lindsey: it was. you cannot have asked for a better afternoon if you have things to do. it was a great day, but i want to tell you, and why are we all the way here, is what you may be thinking. there is a lot of weather happening in the parts of southeastern missouri in southern illinois. on this is because this is the weather system moving in our direction. if you look at trends in what is happening now, this gives you a little weather heads up on what will be happening in our ne of the woodsck. --neck of the woods. this will eventually make a v l ine near the great lakes. this flow will be making its way here as we head into monday

better chances of showers and thunderstorms. we have the original high-pressure hanging out with us but i want to show you the latest trend into your monday morning. we are expecting the potential of some patchy fog developing early monday morning. you may need to leave your house maybe five or 10 minutes earlier just because of that fog and you can see some clouds are thickening up. that is because the area of low pressure is getting closer him a bringing the cloud cover, the moisture and unfortunately humidity as well. you can see about that. thus areas will stay dry tomorrow but you can see what is happening at 8:30 monday night when we start to see the increase of the showers and thunderstorms coming in from the south and pushing the way to the north right around the area of low pressure and then you can see what really happens with a lot of the heavy rain, most of it is going to miss us but we will get hit with a few of the showers. this is going to be continuing as we head into tuesday.
