protest on the field. the star quarterback staying seated during the national anthem. tonight he's speaking out and what he says he's standing for by not standing at all. and the tow truck companies accused of setting traps to snag your car. owners stranded until they pay up. could this happen to you? good evening and thank you for joining us on this saturday. i'm cecelia vega. we begin with the scare at 30,000 feet. an engine ripped off a plane. shortly after takeoff. the passenger jet coming in for an emergency landing. the southwest flight from new orleans to orlando, more than 100 people onboard. these images just coming in. terrified passengers saying they heard a loud boom. the pilot reading the emergency checklist. passengers forced to put on their masks as the cabin lost pressure. the investigation is under way at this hour. abc's adrienne bankert starts us

>> reporter: tonight an in-air emergency. the southwest jet losing one of its engines. >> engine failure. >> reporter: the pilot breathing heavily as they go through the checklist. >> disengaged. >> reporter: this image showing the engine ripped apart is what the 99 passengers saw as they looked out their window. >> we heard a loud boom. sounded like a tire blowing and >> reporter: oxygen masks deploying. that's passenger stephanie and her husband michael putting theirs on. >> the children were screaming and crying. >> reporter: flight data shows the plane above 30,000 feet descending more than 20,000 in eight minutes. >> my ears were popping pretty bad since we were going down pretty fast. >> reporter: the boeing 737 landing safely live in pensacola 30 minutes after takeoff.

this was an explosive event. this is very, very rare. and it's very dangerous because in this case, the engine actually threw a piece of metal into the cabin. and it was close to where somebody was hitting. somebody could have been killed. >> reporter: southwest saying they're cooperating with federal investigators. those passengers are saying that they're thankful for the pilot who kept them alive. cecelia. >> i'm sure they are. thank you. we'll turn to our other top story in chicago. nba suta cousin caught in a cross-fire the young mother gunned down while pushing her baby in a stroller. three others killed. at least 18 wounded. wade is speaking out saying enough is enough. abc's alex perez has the latest. >> reporter: chicago police questioning two people as they search for the gunman who killed the cousin of nba superstar dwyane wade.

>> reporter: a mother of four had just finished registering her kids at school friday afternoon. she was walking down the street pushing her daughter in a stroller when she was gunned down. >> our victim is an innocent party to this senseless shooting. >> reporter: wade's mother comforting her mom. >> i believe it's senseless. >> reporter: wade has long spoken out against gun violence at the espys earlier this year -- >> it has to stop. enough. enough is enough. >> reporter: and saying this at an espn town hall one day before his cousin was killed. >> it's deep rooted. this is something that didn't start today and not going to end tomorrow. >> reporter: wade tweeting another act of senseless gun violence, four kids lost their mom for no reason and using the #enoughisenough.

violence. 2,739 shootings this year, an average of 11 people shot every day. murders up a staggering 48%. her youngest child was a couple of weeks old. the loved ones plan to hold a prayer service for the family tomorrow. cecelia. >> thank you. that tragedy in chicago is making its way on to the campaign trail. donald trump facing instant backlash for using the deadly shooting to appeal to african-american voters tweeting they will vote for him. abc's david wright from iowa. >> just yesterday the cousin of nba star dwyane wade, a great guy, dwyane wade, was the victim of a tragic shooting. >> reporter: today in iowa donald trump cited the chicago shooting as a tragic example of what's gone wrong in american cities. >> i'm running to offer a better future to the citizens of detroit, baltimore, chicago, all across this great land, inner city and outer city.

reaching out to black voters and mostly white rallies like this one where we didn't see any african-americans. >> vote for donald trump, i will fix it. what do you have to lose? it can't get any worse. >> reporter: trump didn't help his case first thing this morning by tweeting not to offer sympathy at first but to score political points. dwyane wade's cousin was shot and killed by walking her baby in chicago. just wi' african-americans will vote trump. only four hours after that tweet did he offer condolences. that initial tweet brought a firestorm of reaction from actor don cheadle to this voter who tweeted trump is a sick man this doesn't earn you african-american votes. the voters we spoke with were sympathetic to the way trump moderates his tone. what remains to be seen, how african-american voters will respond. they simply weren't here.

>> david thank you. hillary clinton today received her first national security briefing right here in new york. but that comes with now mounting questions tonight about her family's clinton foundation. abc news exclusive new e-mails show big donors hoping for big favors while she was secretary of state. devin dwyer has more. >> reporter: hillary clinton entering an fbi office today. no aides by her side for her first national security briefing as presidential candidate. a top secret sit-down lasting more than two hours. the meeting comes as clinton faces new questions about the clinton foundation. whether top donors receive special treatment while she was secretary of state. abc news has obtained these e-mails between then top foundation official doug band and clinton's inner circle. documents obtained by citizens united. in one exchange, a request from the foundation for invitations to a state lunch

three groups that donated millions to the foundation. that foundation official also requesting that one of the guests be seated at vice president biden's table. clinton top aide huma abedin replied i'll ask. in another exchange abedin is asked to pass on a message to the ambassador on behalf of a great friend and supporter of the clinton foundation. that big supporter donated more than $1 million. abedin passes on the message also writing no need for action. donald trump has been pong >> it's hard to tell where the clinton foundation ends and where the state department begins. >> reporter: both the clinton foundation and the state department denied donors got any special favors or influence. >> my work as secretary of state was not influenced by any outside forces. >> reporter: tonight the state department tells abc news it is not inappropriate to consider suggestions from outside groups. the clinton foundation says these e-mails are not related to its work. cecelia.

that same system hitting storm weary indiana. ten confirmed tornados this week. usually seeing just two tornadoes in all of august. >> rob is here with us for more. you have got your eye on some more storms moving in at this hour? >> reporter: we do. we have a line of severe thunderstorms rolling across ohio. wind gusts, 62 miles an hour, measured in toledo. damaging winds and moving quickly across the capital of columbus. to the tropics. storms rolling into louisiana and southeast texas. heavy rain. flood watch posted for houston. and the tropical will get into the gulf of mexico. when it does that, it's got about a 40% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone and a widespread of the computer models. into the pacific, tropical storm madeline will make a run at hawaii midweek as well. we'll get into prime time hurricane season.

>> turning to the nfl star at the center of a national debate before a big game, san francisco 49er quarterback colin kaepernick refusing to stand for the national anthem. abc's ron claiborne on why the star player says he's staying on the bench. >> reporter: it happened before the preseason game against the green bay packers friday night. san francisco 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick sitting on teammates as the national anthem was played. kaepernick explaining in an interview with nfl media i am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that opresses black people and people of color. to me this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. in a clear reference to police shootings of african-americans he added there were bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder. nba stars
