making news in america this morning, breaking news as one of the country's busiest airports is thrown into chaos. overnight reports of shots fired brought l.a.x. to a standstill with some passengers even running out onto the tarmac. this morning police are giving the all clear, but the problems and delays are far from over. also happening right now, tracking the tropics. with several storms on the move right now, the new tropical storm watch just issued by the national weather service and heavy rain elsewhere creating all sorts of problems. it was a close call for passengers on board this flight after the engine seemed to just blow apart. oxygen masks deployed as the pilot safely completed an emergency landing. hear what the airline is now saying about the incident. and it was ladies night at

beyonce, britney spears taking the stage, their performances and some wild fashion ahead. a good monday morning to you all. we begin with that breaking news from los angeles. it was a travel nightmare at l.a.x. >> several terminals evacuated. incoming flights were also stopped and traffic into that airport a standstill. all this as a precaution, we're told, after there were reports of gunfire. it turns out those reports were false, but the damage done. >> it was chaotic. we got off the plane and were exiting and saw just a mob, a crowd running towards us. >> reporter: these frantic scenes at the nation's second busiest airport, passengers running in all directions, many onto the tarmac at l.a.x. after reports of shots fired. abc's matt gutman was there as it unfolded.

l.a.x. and see the loop, which is normally so packed with traffic, completely empty. lots of people scattering. they closed down a couple of terminals, and you see everywhere people having to hoof it to try to get where they're going even out of this airport. pretty chaotic here and pretty scary here. >> reporter: the scare forced the faa to call for a ground stop. all flights west of the mississippi hailed at their origin. passengers in some terminals had to be rescreened causing long lines. finally flights resuming after about two hours. out to be false, instead spurred by loud noises. police looking into the source. a man in a zorro costume was detained. it's still not clear if he was connected to the incident. he talked to our station kabc. >> they didn't arrest me or anything like that. they explained to me, you know, crazy stuff happens in the airport, and within two or three minutes after they approached me, it was over. >> reporter: the incident at l.a.x. coming exactly two weeks after chaos erupted at new

reports of gunfire outside a security checkpoint there sent people running in panic and the governor has ordered an investigation into the police response. a guy in a zorro costume, only in los angeles would that be the norm. normal operations resumed at l.a.x., one of the busiest airports. so, you can imagine there will be a ripple effect today in air travel. >> a lot of people at l.a.x. this morning. >> yeah. the other big story that we're following, we're tracking several active tropical storm systems. getting a little stronger, but it is staying east of bermuda. a new depression is now just south of key west and headed northward in the gulf. another depression appears to be headed for the outer banks of north carolina, and a tropical storm watch is now in effect there, as well. >> and you can see the weather deteriorating in key west as tropical depression nine moves closer with wind, rain, lightning. this is time-lapsed video. the depression is expected to get stronger, but where it is headed, well, nobody is really

>> the forecast track for td nine is for it to become a tropical storm and then wednesday, thursday probably go somewhere into florida, but very low confidence on the track and the intensity of this. we're going to have to watch it very, very closely. >> the other tropical depression, the one that's heading up the atlantic coast, is expected to become a tropical storm later on today. and there's also extreme weather in the midwest including flooding in the cincinnati area. heavy rain closed roads and submerged cars, but no injuries were reported. th less than three hours breaking a 42-year-old record. now, thousands of people were without power last night, and a lightning strike on its antenna even knocked out our affiliate there in cincinnati off the air for a little while. and there were funnel clouds south of detroit yesterday and a tornado or two may have touched down, but the tornadoes were not confirmed by the national weather service. there were no injuries and the only damage reported to trees and crops. officials said the funnel clouds were very weak circulations.

a new jersey transit cop is being called a hero understandly this morning after risking his own life to save a man who is lying on the train tracks. the man had been involved in some sort of disturbance and laid down on the t of that oncoming train. look how quickly and how close that was. officer victor ortiz struggled to pull the uncooperative man away but eventually dragged him to safety with just seconds to spare. in chicago, two brothers have been charged in the fatal shooting of nba star dwyane wade's cousin. nykea aldridge, a mother of four, was shot and killed as she was pushing her baby stroller. police say the bullets were intended for someone else. the police superintendent says the suspects were both felons on

checking our top stories, terminals at l.a.x. were evacuated following reports of shots fired. those reports turned out to be a false alarm but it did take two hours before normal operations resumed. flight delays will now ripple across the country. donald trump set to deliver what he calls a major speech on illegal immigration in arizona. wednesday's address comes as he appears to be backing off promises to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants. there are two weather systems getting stronger in the tropics. one is expected to head up into the gulf toward alabama. the other up the atlantic coast toward north carolina. looking at the rest of today's weather, cooler and windy in the west, thunderstorms in the central plains and heavy rain along the texas coast and hot and humid in the east. finally this morning, some real pride on display in a west virginia town devastated by deadly flooding back in june.
