chris christie pausing for an extended photo op outside the president-elect's new jersey estate. no longer in charge of the transition, but hoping to stay in trump's inner circle. any announcements today? >> we're going to have a great day. great people coming. you'll see. >> reporter: more than 20 meetings in two days. one of the longest, with general james mattis. now a favored contender for secretary of defense. "mad dog mattis," as he's known, is a retired marine corps general. the former head of u.s. central a warrior scholar known for his blunt tough talk and aggressiveness in combat. after their meeting -- >> he's the real deal. >> reporter: but he may not have been trump's first choice. retired four-star general jack keane tells abc news that trump offered him the job, but he declined for personal reasons.

"i watched parts of @nbcsnl saturday night live last night. it is a totally one-sided, biased show, nothing funny at all." >> reporter: among those in the what took place, mixed. >> i don't think that anything the cast said was disrespectful. >> we spent a lot of money to come and see hamilton and we really don't want to hear political. >> reporter: some trump supporters are taking to twitter to calling for a boycott of "hamilton." but the show in new york city is sold out almost to the end of next year, and also in chicago. the show opening in los angeles later next year. and barack obama and the russian president came face to face today, possibly for the last time.

talked for about four minutes in peru, focusing mainly on ukraine and syria. now to the manhunt in texas, looking for the man who killed a police officer in cold blood. here's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: tonight -- a tense manhunt in texas for the killer who ambushed a san antonio police officer, shooting him in the head. >> i've got an officer down in front of headquarters. >> reporter: investigators say officer benjamin marconi was in his squad car just before noon today writing a traffic ticket across from police headquarters, when another driver pulled up behind him, walked up to the passenger side window and shot marconi twice, before driving off in this dark-colored car. >> this is everyone's worst nightmare. >> reporter: investigators are now scanning surveillance video. >> the vehicle drove through

the killer and his motive. >> we never want to see anything like this happen, unfortunately like dallas and like baton rouge it's happened here, now. >> reporter: already this year, 58 other officers in this country have been shot to death in the line of duty. a more than 60% increase over last year. and dan, tonight the search for the suspect is on. police in san antonio are being extra cautious. now only making traffic stops in teams until this killer is caught. dan? >> marci, thank you. tonight, two arrests after the killing of a congressman's 15-year-old grandson. accused of shooting him in an argument over a pair of sneakers. more than 500 murders have been

and weather now, whiteout conditions from michigan to pennsylvania. in some spots, temperatures plunging more than 30 degrees in fewer than 24 hours. eva pilgrim is right in the thick of it. reporter: tonight, winter blasting its way across the country. whiteout conditions from michigan to pennsylvania. plows working to clear roadways, visibility next to zero at times. forcing drivers to slow down. many still no match for the blowing snow and freezing fog sliding off the highways. snow and ice ricocheting off windshields. the roads here in watertown are snow covered but still passable. concerns that will change when the sun goes down. parts of upstate new york expecting up to 20 inches of snow by tuesday morning and temperatures taking a nosedive. plummeting over 30 degrees in

projecting a million more people will get on planes, trains or hit the road. nearly 49 million travelers in all. passengers hoping epic lines like last spring aren't in their future. the tsa says it's ready. >> we're running a daily operation now that is centered, that focuses specifically on screening operations hour by hour at the top 30 airports. >> reporter: 1,400 new officers have been hired. 2,000 part-timers promoted to full time. >> i always get here early, before i get on the flight so i know i have time to adjust. >> reporter: the tsa says get to the airport two hours before for domestic flights, three hours before international. as for chicago o'hare, the union says monday it will announce which day it will strike. dan? >> thank you. now to the investigation into the deadly crash of a medical flight in nevada. the plane exploded in flames after crashing in a parking lot. the patient and three crew members were killed. so, why did the plane go down

here's phillip mena. >> reporter: a medical plane crashing into this crowded parking lot in nevada. >> we have an explosion at the barricks parking lot, possibly involving an airplane. >> reporter: massive fireballs setting off explosions. chaos as firefighters rush to douse the flames. all four people on that plane, killed. including nurse, tiffany urresti. and paramedic, jake shepard. the plane destined for a hospital in utah, plummeting moments after take-off. witness reports leading police to believe, there was a mechanical failure. we've seen accidents like this

many face medical bills on steroids after going to the e.r. here's linzie janis. >> reporter: tonight, millions of americans rushed to the emergency room, then slammed with surprise bills. >> your son is writhing in pain on the operating table or in the e.r., and that's something you just don't want to go through. >> reporter: david connors' teenage son brian, sent to the emergency room after snapping his femur during wrestling practice. >> it was the worst pain of my life. connors, saddled with unexpected charges from their in-network hospital. >> i think it was somewhere in the ballpark of $10,000. >> reporter: the reason -- two of brian's e.r. doctors were out of network. >> consumers are being dragged into the middle of a financial argument between health insurance companies and medical providers. >> reporter: a new study finding 1 out of every 5 patients treated at in-network emergency rooms gets a doctor that's out of network, saddling patients with an average bill of $622.
