shocking cold, whipping winds and whiteout conditions. more than 2 feet of snow and counting in parts of central new york. >> i went to bed, i woke up, it was a winter wonderland. >> reporter: slick roads and frigid temperatures in ohio. blamed for this 40-car pileup sunday night, and this inferno in new jersey sparked after high winds sparked downed power lines. sparking a fire that engulfed two cars in michigan. that punishing winter weather. >> whoo, we got a whiteout! look at this. >> pushing across the northeast. >> got about four inches of snow. still coming down. >> reporter: turning roads in new york into icy parking lots. with traffic and us struggling to keep moving. still on the interstate 81, right in the heart of this snow band.

if you are anywhere from dallas up to the midwest, minnesota and parts of iowa, severe storms along the cold front in dallas. 5:00 a.m., if you're out of o'hare, something to watch. everyone is watching the blast as they get ready to travel for the holidays. aaa expecting a million more travelers than last year. and a major airport strike could create chaos. abc's david kerley has more from new york's laguardia airport. >> reporter: morning, robin. we're four days into the thanksgiving travel system, and we have seen problems. i was delayed four hours yesterday getting to new york because of wind, not snow. and then as you mentioned, a possible strike in chicago. these are contracted cabin cleaners. they clean the cabins, and not pilots or anything. they're threatening to strike. i'm told by the airlines they'll bring in nonunion workers if there is a strike. they don't expect delays. driving is the big way people will get around.

part of the central command, and he's now thought to be a front-runner for secretary of defense. >> all i can say is he is the real deal. >> reporter: trump tweeting general james "mad dog" mattis, who is being considered for secretary of defense, was very impressive today. a true general's general. trumps a meeting with former foe, mitt romney, saturday got lots of attention, but not firm commitments. vice president-elect pence said romney is under active considerat was quite grateful that mitt romney came here. to trump national, and spent some time and willing to be considered for this important role at an important time in the lifetime of our nation. >> reporter: the president-elect met with one of the owners of the chicago cubs. and hollywood superagent ari emmanuel. ? i'm thinking past tomorrow ? trump's vice president-elect had spare time to take in the broadway hit musical "hamilton" for the cast's shoutout at the

audience. >> we, sir, we are the diverse america who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us. our planet. [ cheers and applause ] our children. >> reporter: trump called the show overrated and demanded an apology for, quote, their terrible behavior to mike pence. pence said he enjoyed the show. >> i wasn't offended by what was said. i'll leave to others whether that was the appropriate venue. to say it. live" taking the opportunity for a laugh. >> i heard you went to see "hamilton." how was that? >> it was good. i got a free lecture. >> i heard they booed you. >> absolutely. >> reporter: trump's transition so far is a bit of a break with tradition. normally the vetting process is shrouded in secrecy. but trump's is a bit more like speed dating. that said, he has promised to be a different sort of president, and the decisions and discussions are taking place behind closed doors, george. >> he's doing it his way. david wright, thank you.

and cokie roberts. martha, let me begin with you. the president-elect leaned in to general james mattis, "mad dog" mattis as a possible secretary of defense. what can you tell us about him? >> it's no wonder he was impressed with mattis. they share a lot of the same views about the military and foreign policy. since retiring in 2013, mattis has been critical of defense cuts, of announcing draw-downs in afghanistan in advance, and our approach to fighting radical jihadists. saying we have not been clear about defining or dealing with terrorists. but he is beloved by troops, the kind of general that would take christmas duty watch so younger marines with families could enjoy the holidays. women in the military may have issues with where he stands on women in combat. and if he is nominated by president-elect trump, he would have to get a congressional waiver because you have to be out of uniform for seven years

>> someone else who might need a waiver. general david petraeus. also mitt romney, rudy giuliani. three individuals, and three very different messages. all mentioned for secretary of state. >> we don't know a lot about what happened with mitt romney. as for david petraeus, i'm not sure he's under active consideration. but there was another general who recommended that trump look at him. but all very different views on things. >> in the meantime, cokie roberts, the presidel possible conflicts after the meeting with indian developers that have real estate interests with donald trump in yand earlier this week. president obama talked about that yesterday in peru. and some members of congress as well on this front. >> and from ethics officers of republican as well as democratic administrations saying he's got to do something about these business interests. president obama said he put all of his holdings in treasury

staff, if it sounds like fun, don't do it. but -- and pointed out that they have not been any scandals in his administration so far. donald trump's going to have a real problem here. he criticized hillary clinton for her foundation getting contributions from foreign companies, foreign countries. the foundation at least was doing good around the world. in this case, it would be a question of somebody trying to do business t sort of special favors from the government. that could be >> okay, cokie roberts, martha raddatz, thank you very much. cokie, you'll be back. breaking news overseas. authorities arresting at least seven people in a terror raid, concerned they were plotting an attack in france. our senior justice correspondent, pierre thomas, is here in the studio with us.

to eight people, afghan, french, and of moroccan descent. the concern was they were perhaps going to target a ristmas celebration. perhaps a christmas market. concern that that would be something that could play out similar to what we saw last year in paris. horrific attack. >> yes, indeed. with the holiday season coming. a lot of americans travel abroad. any threats or concerns? >> a worldwide travel alert for americans in europe. here at home, no specific credible threat. but last week, officials did take note of isis talkingut season. >> we have to keep an eye on that. thank you. here at home, a series of violent attack. four officers targeted. in san antonio, an officer was executed in a traffic stop. police are searching for this car right there. abc's kayna whitworth has the latest. >> reporter: overnight, a manhunt intensifying. san antonio police searching for a suspect they say killed detective benjamin marconi, a 20-year veteran of the force

vehicle just outside police headquarters. authorities say while he was writing a traffic ticket, this car pulled up behind him. a man getting out and shooting detective marconi twice in the head through the passenger side window. >> i've got an officer down in front of headquarters. >> reporter: the 50-year-old father of two rushed to the hospital where he passed away. >> most families would be celebrating the holidays. s.a.p.d. will be burying one of its own because of an ultimate act of cowardice by a suspect who will be caught and brought to justice. >> reporter: authorities releasing these images of possible witnesses, asking them to come forward, and overnight in st. louis, another ambush. an officer shot twice in the face while he was still wearing his seat belt. his weapon holstered. >> the officer says he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the glass breaking as the shots came through and struck him in the head. >> reporter: the unidentified married father of three in critical but stable condition. after a city-wide manhunt, the police and the suspect exchanging gunfire.

>> this just shows the dangers of policing, not only here in st. louis, but around the country. >> reporter: over the weekend, two more shootings, in florida and missouri. two police officers shot during traffic stops. both recovering. and here in san antonio, the manhunt continues. where all police officers will be performing for in pairs until the situation is revolved. george. >> serious situation there. now to amy with today's other top stories. a protest that turned into a a tense standoff turned violent overnight near the site of the north dakota pipeline project. about 400 protesters tried to push their way onto a bridge, lighting about a dozen fires there and using slingshots to fire rocks at police. the officers fired back with water cannons in the freezing temperatures. they also used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. one officer was injured.

chemical weapons are being used to attack civilians in syria. the latest reported victims include a family in aleppo. meanwhile, surveillance video showing an air strike hitting a children's hospital. all hospitals in eastern aleppo are now destroyed. leaving 250,000 residents to suffer. some frightening moments for passengers in europe. on this flight. take a look as heavy winds rocked the plane while it approached amsterdam's airport. it appre sideways and then aborted the landing at the last minute before trying again. something amiss in the nfl after an embarrassing record on sunday. kickers missed 12 extra points. these kicks after touchdowns used to be automatic until last year when the league made them 13 yards longer. finally, football may be a religion to some fans, but that concept take ton a whole new level.

to -- an animal, let alone a human being, is just heinous. >> reporter: overnight, one of the suspects, james rackover, the surrogate son of a prominent manhattan jeweler, denying any involvement in the murder. telling the new york daily news, i have no reason to hurt this kid. i have never hurt anyone. i have never killed anyone. i didn't do this. but police disagree. they believe comunale went to this luxury manhattan with 25-year-old rackover, 28-year-old larry dilione, and three women after meeting them at a nightclub. according to investigators, comunale left the high-rise to help the three women into a cab. then re-entered the building, when police say, he was murdered. >> he was stabbed 15 times in the chest area. also, there was an effort to burn his body. a very disturbing crime scene. >> reporter: police believe the

the lawsuit revolving around a 2010 sting operation by an undercover reporter. dan, many people remember this. 2010, she was asked about her ex-husband at the time, prince andrew, and if she would gain access to him. and this is what she said. >> on to the next thing. 500,000 pounds when you can to me. open doors. >> it would be prince andrew? >> yeah. >> is that a deal? >> yeah. >> the handshake andrew. you get me money. this was years ago. why are we just hearing about it now? >> it was an embarrassing moment for her. the reason now is that reporter you see there, known in britain as the fake sheikh, because he would go undercover as a fake sheikh, is now serving time. in connection with one of his stings, he got into big trouble. alleged to have tampered with a witness. now you have a flood of other people coming forward and finally getting their chance to get back at this guy.

celebrities in england. and so new they view this as their opportunity to finally try to sue and get back. >> how strong of a case is it? rupert murdoch's lawyers say it's defective and embarrassing. >> here in the united states, there would be no case. right? you see her on tape. there's no case. it would be a no-brainer. in england, they're willing more to evaluate the quality of the journalist. part of the lawsuit talks about the way it was edited. that it was misleading and it misrepresented what actually happened. sorts of things you would never see in a lawsuit here. >> we have seen lawsuits here against the media have been succeeding. >> they have. they have. this one wouldn't in the united states. >> dan, thank you very much. up next, new warnings about air rage. as the holiday travel season kicks into high gear. we have the latest incident. 41 passengers -- excuse me. removed from a brussels flight over the weekend.

or are we just seeing more thanks to smartphones? >> you know, george stephanopoulos. you're a smart man. i have the statistics to say infrastructure actually -- that you are actually right. there are fewer incidents than there used to be. i have never heard anything like this. 41 people taken off an aircraft at the same time. all from the same group. and it's rare. usually, it's one or two people. enough to i have the numbers here for you. over the last five years in the united states, we had 183 incidents down to 145, down to 103, and then this year, halfway through the year, only 31 incidents. so yes, there are fewer, but we hear a lot more about them, george. >> and david, i know this is shocking. but alcohol may have played a role. i'm no expert here. but that is what they're saying. and now people are saying, should alcohol be banned on flights? >> there's always talk about that. yes, alcohol was involved with some of the 41 taken off board.

airlines, it's a revenue stream for them. but they also don't want an unsafe situation inside the cockpit. it's been tried before. flight attendants try to limit people. like, haven't you had enough? sometimes that's led to unruly passengers. it can be a bad mix. >> good luck on the ban. >> good luck with that. sometimes flying leads you to drinking. i like your travel outfit. very chic. i like that, dave. good look. good look. >> thank you. apec an alarming new study about kids and junk food. the american pediatrics found children exposed to food advertisements consumed more calories even when they were not hungry. dr. jen ashton will weigh in on this. what are the indications, jen? >> here's the thing. this study found an association with what young children, preschool kids do, watching tv with food ads and

foods, which is speak for high-calorie, high-sugar, low-nutrient. this is about increased cued eating. and can what kids see prime the pump for behaviors later on that lead to weight gain. it's impossible to avoid these ads. this is very concerning. rst, as a mom, i remember do? these days. you are if control of what your you are in control of preschool child watches or doesn't watch. you want to leverage that while you still can. you can't control a 15-year-old as easily. then, as a doctor, i think this nd-body connection. that we know there's a part of the brain that gets really lit up when we eat high-sugar foods. and that path way can be established very early in life, so remember that connection. and lastly, as a nutritionist, i learned, and this bears repeating, put that living color

we're going to whisk it up. you want to temper the egg. so you want to get a little bit of this in, because we don't want to curdle. we don't want to curdle. >> do you do that? >> you don't want cooked eggs in your -- now we're going to slowly put that in. >> what else? i got you, i got you. >> we have our cheese. >> and i helped! >> i love it. so we have our cheese here. sharp cheddar. ooh. perfect. perfect. it gets tough. here's a little spatula. >> better. >> so we have a little bit of salt. >> okay. >> okay, i love sugar in my mac and cheese. a tiny bit of sugar. >> that's a tiny bit? >> it's going to turn into this big dish. ground mustard. adds a nice little kick. a little pizzaz.

>> and what the egg is going to do is bind everything. >> how long does it bake? >> it bakes at 425 for 25 to 30 minutes. >> that's it? >> that's it. that goes in there. i make a topping. we have parmesan cheese. breadcrumbs. pancetta. a little salt. parsley. we mix it all together. and then we just -- >> i like it. >> pop it on top. that will cook and crisp up. >> that's going to look like that. great. oh, wonderful. >> hello. >> we heard mac and cheese. >> it's perfect. i love it. >> amazing. so good. >> what is this? >> my spiced butternut squash mash. it's a nice alternative to your mashed potato. >> what is your special ingredient? >> curry powder. >> oh! >> we have a little curry powder.

cashew butter. >> that's it. >> it makes it creamy. adds a little protein if you're looking for that sort of thing on thanksgiving. we put that all in there. we can just combine everything. let's mash that up first. >> i'll mash. you talk. i want to make sure we get to that. >> brussels sprouts. chop them in half. onions. pear. >> yeah, uh huh. >> a lit tle bit of pear. we bake that off in the oven at, dried cranberries. honey. a squeeze of lemon. >> get the recipes online. we'll be right back.

>> wisn 12 news time is 8:57. there's good news for anyone who's holiday road trip will take them along milwaukee's lakefront. later today, the dot will give an update on a major construction project here that's wrapping up this week. the lakefront gateway project reconfigured some streets and freeway ramps. 794 and clybourn street. for the first time in years, drivers can now head east on clybourn street all the way to lincoln memorial drive. officials say the dot's portion of the gateway project will be completely finished this week. though work remains on the city of milwaukee's portion of the project. crews will eventually be adding pedestrian bridges, buildings, and developing more of the third ward. >> now to a check on the forecast with sally. >> we are talking sunshine, ben,
