in the final seconds of life, the hearts stops beating and finally the brain goes dark. doctors call this final moment death. we have a doctor here leading the largest ever medical study into the state of consciousness and unconsciousness at the time of death. [applause] a lot of us don't want to think about those final moments of life that we'll all eventually experience but you argue it's criminal that we know more about th c more. >> absolutely. my job is to save people's lice when they get critically ill and when they go beyond the threshold of death. the reason we have to study is this is to find ways to save lives and save people's brains to bring them back to life safely. also, a lot of patients that i see in the intensive care unit are very afraid of death.

happen to them so we need to build a science that helps us understand what death is going to be like and also, think about it. if we were to face the possibility of dying tomorrow, how would that help us change the way we live? i think it is important. dr. oz: is the process of death overall? is what we experience going to be the same? >> absolutely. most of us have this philosophical notion about death. like it's a black and but death is a process. what happens is eventually there's not enough oxygen getting into the brain and our heart and other organs and they shut down. they shut down particularly when the heart stops. when that occurs we become lifeless, motionless, there's no blood getting in the brain. we lose all our life reflexes. and what's been discovered in the last 10 or 20 years, it's after we die that the cells

than -- slower than we thought. so they don't decompose until hours after we diet what is the experience like? we can study that through science. we've come to understand you been that there is a universal human experience of death. it doesn't matter where we come from, japan, china, africa. there is an absolutely universal experience of death that is by and e people describe the sensation of being very peaceful. pain-free. sometimes describe seeing relatives. sometimes welcoming them. a lot of them will describe having experienced everything that they had done and said. if they'd heard -- hurt others, they feel that exact pain and they themselves become the judge of their own actions.

and this is all through soigs. dr. oz: we polled our audience. when we asked all of you to describing death in one word, you know what they said? scary and painful. which i guess most of us, if we do ever think about death would come to the belief that it might be scary and painful. but you mention that main -- pain is not a big issue of these universal has had all over the world. >> i don't call them near-death experiences so the people we studied had actually died so it's the human experience of death. again, it is going into the unknown. we're afraid of the unknown. if we understand what happens we're not so afraid. if we think about it from a medical perspective, there's science around this. when people die -- first of all, when we're awake right now, we
