saints player. the trial of cardell hayes went straight through the weekend. >> it centered on the death of will smith who was shot and killed on april 9th after a confrontation with hayes. after nearly six hours of deliberation jurors convicted hayes of manslaughter. the details on the case now from abc's phillip mena. >> reporter: prosecutors calling this road rage shooting an execution. jurors hearing closing arguments in the kil o orleans saints star will smith. c cardell hayes shooting him eight times, seven in the back. smith's wife hit by gunfire too. speaking in his own defense, hayes telling jurors he opened fire fearing for his life, claiming smith attacked him and grabbed the gun. "i know for a fact i was going to get shot," hayes said. hayes claiming he heard a gunshot before pulling the trigger. although police say a gun fired in smith's car was never fired. >> the defense he gave in his

contradicted by third-party witnesses and it's also been contradicted by the forensic evidence. >> reporter: smith was an all pro in his playing career and a fan favorite. former teammates like quarterback drew brees showing their support throughout this emotional trial. >> our thanks to phillip. cardell hayes was also found guilty of attempted manslaughter and for wounding smith's wife. he faces up to 40 years in prison. he will be sentenced in february. >> many members of the saints there during the reading of the verdicts late last night. the other story we're following this morning, the winter storm that is working its way across the northern u.s. there are winter weather advisories in effect overnight e roads open for the morning commute. >> a delta plane landing in detroit from buffalo slid off the runway as it made a turn. no injuries there. but already today dozens of flights have been canceled at chicago's airports and more in detroit. abc's richard cantu reports the entire region is taking it on

mix of freezing rain and snow throughout the northwest. but then we have a significant amount of snow that's going to fall throughout utah, montana, going into the north central part of the country. this is going to slide through along with that arctic air. also snow expected to continue to tabulate between 6 to 12 inches of snow throughout michigan going into new york, buffalo specifically, all the way throughout the northeast and at least three to six throughout a chunk of the northeast. kendis, marci? >> folks in buffalo are like three to six, that's fine, no big deal. thanks to paul there. president-elecna is dismissing a "washington post" report that russia used hackers to sway the election in his favor. a bipartisan group of senators is now calling for an investigation into allegations of russian interference. and 17 u.s. intelligence agencies had already blamed russia for the pre-election cyber attacks. but trump is rejecting those claims and pointing the finger at the democrats. >> i think it's ridiculous. i think it's just another excuse.

i think the democrats are putting it out because they suffered one of the greatest defeats in the history of politics in this country. >> "the new york times" is reporting that both the democratic and republican national committees were hacked but only information about the dnc was leaked. rnc chair and incoming white house chief of staff reince priebus insists no rnc systems were compromised. and trump is expected to decide on a secretary of state any day now. exxonmobil ceo rex tillerson has emerged as the likely pick. but questiar by members of both parties about tillerson's deep ties to russia. tillerson says he's known vladimir putin for nearly 20 years and has a close relationship with him. trump sees that as a great advantage, calling tillerson a world-class player and a deal maker. a southern california man has been charged with a hate crime after a violent incident outside of a mosque in simi valley. police say john madison confronted worshippers outside

they say the victim was targeted because of his religion. police are also looking for a second suspect who also may have been involved in the incident. about a dozen guests were injured in a fire at a michigan ski resort this weekend. it broke out in the main lodge of the born highlands resort sunday morning. there were more than 100 guests staying in the lodge at the time the entire resort and its slopes are now closed with the busiest time of the year approaching. and atf investigators have finished their work at the warehouse in oakland, california fire. new details about the investigation are expected to be revealed tomorrow during a news conference with atf and other agencies. a refrigerator has been ruled out as a cause of the fire, but agents still suspect it was something electrical. a former member of the "brady bunch" cast has been fired by a radio station after some anti-gay remarks. susan olsen used to co-host a political talk show on the digital station which is based in l.a. olsen played cindy brady on the

hours late on sunday jurors found hayes guilty of manslaughter p he was also convicted of attempted manslaughter from the wounding of smith's wife during the february altercation. jurors decided against a second degree murder conviction which would have led to a mandatory life sentence. with that said hayes faces up to 40 years behind bars when he's sentenced in mid february. overseas now, where turkey has observed a national day of mourning following an attack at a soccer stadium. a kurdish militant group has claimed responsibility for the twin bombings that killed 38 people. st officials. turkey has been hit by a series of terror attacks this year. and there's been no claim of responsibility for a terror attack at a coptic christian church in egypt. 25 were killed and dozens of were injured when a bomb ripped through the church. most victims were women and children. it was one of the deadliest attacks on the country's christian minority in recent years. staying in the region isis has scored quite a symbolic

focused on aleppo they've retaken the ancient city of palmyra. while it has some strategic significance, palmyra has mostly symbolic meaning. the last time isis held the city it destroyed many historic sites and artifacts, and experts fear a repeat of that. in the meantime u.s. defense secretary ash carter says iraq's government offensive against isis is on track. he made an unannounced visit to the base, the iraqi forces are using as a staging area in the battle for mosul, iraq's second largest city. this week carter expressed confidence that isis would be ousted from mosul. although he wouldn't say when. it is snowing overnight in many parts of the u.s. but this may be the warmest part of the week. on the heels of snow across the midwest and northeast will come a dangerous arctic blast. temperatures will be well below freezing for about 48 hours. meanwhile, road crews will working overnight in the great

in detroit a plane slid off the runway after landing, ended up in the grass. there were no injuries reported there. and the snow will be pushing into the northeast today. there's also snow in the northwest. there's really nowhere in the northern u.s. that is escaping this wintry blast. it is even going to be chilly in the south. >> it is. let's get the latest right now from accuweather's paul williams. >> good morning to you as well, kendis, marci. we have to brace for this arctic air. we're already dealing with flurries and all that. by the time we get into tuesday. but then we have a secondary blast of arctic air that's going to make the first blast of arctic air feel like the little brother because the big brother's on the scene or on the way. unseasonably cold air will overtake the entire country, covering the north-central part of the country. the great lakes, northeast, filtering all the way down to the deep south. just to give you an idea we're looking for real feel temperatures on tuesday to drop to 20 below or worse throughout the north central part of the country the dakotas.

digits or worse than that. it will move in like a thief in the night. kendis, marci? >> our thanks to paul. john glenn has been remembered during a candlelight vigil at the small ohio church where he was a lifelong member. mourners prayed, sang songs and shared stories who died last week at the age of 95. funeral plans are being worked out. but glenn is expected to lie in repose at the sate house in hundreds of people paid their last respects for a georgia police officer shot and killed with his best friend and fellow officer last week. america's police officer nicholas marr and georgia southwest university police officer jody smith died responding to a domestic call last week. the man suspected of killing the officers also took his own life. violence reportedly erupted in louisville, kentucky during a celebration after lamar jackson, the louisville quarterback, won the heisman trophy saturday

of louisville football players were shot at an off-campus apartment complex. their injuries are said to be non-life threatening. and there are in claims that laysman trophy winner rashan salaam had symptoms of cte. he committed suicide last week at age 42. his brother tells "usa today" salaam suffered from memory loss and depression. he also says he spoke to salaam about an hour before salaam's death saying they had a very positive conversation. cte can only be diagnosed after death. salam's brain was not donated for research because of his muslim faith. he won the heisman in 1984 playing a big role in colorado's finishing the season, ranked number 3. we're going to make a hard turn now and switch gears and give some congratulations. a couple of real champions in pole dancing. >> right. okay. they held the south american pole dancing championships over
