it's still a warm night out there in the midlands...and more rain is expected to be on the way. meteorologist ben tanner has your overnight forecast expect more showers and occasional thunderstorms wednesday as another area of low pressure approaches the region. your rain chance jumps to 90% with 1" rain totals possible. the new year's eve rain chance falls to 50% during the day and then down to 30% that night. new year's day will be partly cloudy with only a slight chance of showers and a touch cooler temperatures. the first weekend in january will be dry and partly cloudy. some new faces on the columbia city council could mean changes in how the city, and the council

two new council members sworn in just a couple hours ago. our chad mills was there. now, there could potentially be a fourth vote against some of the mayor's policies, which would mean a majority. but, obviously, that wasn't mentioned at all in the swearing in ceremony. the word of the afternoon -- unity. before a packed out council chamber, new city leaders took their oaths. bill manley was happy to see it. "i hope they work together. we need new blood." unity was the word as new councilmen ed mcdowell and howard duvall and relected councilman moe baddourah took their oaths

"this year, i think people can expect continued big thinking, some really basic blocking and tackling, making sure we're doing the things that local government's supposed to do, but really seeing people work together to move the city forward." but mayor steve benjamin did not endorse duvall or mcdowell, and instead, supported their opponents. columbia business owner joe azar says the dynamic has definitely changed on council. "i think it's going to be a slow change. the new guys aren't going to come in and push everything out. of course, they've got to get acclimated." during his campaign, duvall told voters he won't be a "no-man" to all the mayor's proposal, but he says he believes voters tapped him, along with mcdowell and baddourah, for more fiscal responsibility on council. "i think so, and i think that's why i did well in the election is because i've got some background in going through the city of columbia books." duvall says there's now a new dynamic on council, but he's not calling it a changing of the guard. he's preaching cooperation too. "i hope that it's not going to

i hope that the city council can work together as a unified body. we need to have discussion. we won't agree on everything, but i think if we can discuss things before they come to the city council vote, we'll be able to work out some of those differences, so we'll have a more unified council." some big topics coming up -- monitoring the financing plan of the bull street development, a no- kill initiative at the city's animal shelter, and considering a tax break for a student housing project. tonight, sumter police are looking for three suspects for a shooting. this afternoon, police were

on frazier street where they found two vehicles apparently crashed on purpose. they did not find any victims but tonight they are looking for three men--henry dingle, kevin smith, and william spann. they're all wanted on attempted murder charges. investigators think the three men are all involved in the shooting, they are believed to be armed and dangerous. anyone with information about where they are is asked to call 1-888- crime-sc. sumter authorities are also investigating after a man was found shot on manning afternoon. the sumter county sheriff's witnesses reported hearing several gunshots in the area where the 37- year-old was found he was taken to the hospital witnesses also described seeing two men running away from the scene shortly after the shots rang out. call crimestoppers at 1- 888-crime-sc if you have any information. officials say a holly hill man charged with murdering his ex- girlfriend on christmas admitting to killing her and

where he dumped her. harold pratt appeared in court today. authorities say he killed 38-year-old loretta bunch--a woman he used to date up until a few months ago. her father reported her missing after no one was able to get in touch with her. her funeral will be tomorrow morning. more resignations are rocking the town of north-- wis has confirmed now that the town clerk and assistant clerk have submitted their letters of resignation to the mayor effective january 7th. this comes after the north police chief and another officer quit earlier this month--which left the town without a police force. no word has been ven as to why the clerk and assistant clerk are leaving. within just days of each other two harlem globetrotters have passed away. friday--just two days before the death of meadowlark lemon. holman was a columbia native who played with the 1982. tonight his widow, loula may, spoke to wis--describing the general as a "gentle giant" who had a presence on the court...but was quiet in his

"people didn't realize that he was actually bashful. and the time that he would come out was playing basketball. even-keeled. took the road of least resistance at every chance and would quell situations, because he liked peace." loula and the general met in san francisco and were married for 18 years. she says he spent a lot of time working as a counselor at a boys and girls home after leaving the globetrotters his funeral will be tomorrow. he was 61 years old. a reminder for flood victims applying for federal assistance-- the deadline is fast approaching--but now you're getting a little extra time to get you paperwork in. if you were affected by october flooding, fema is now allowing you to get your application in through january 4th. the deadline was january 3rd at midnight, but since that falls on a sunday--officials are letting people accept applications through the next day.

pataki is the latest presidential candidate to pull his name from the race. pataki had hung his hopes on doing well in the early voting state of new hampshire--but has barely registered in state or national polls. pataki never made it onto a main debate stage and struggled to raise funds. in consumer news tonight-- hoverboards are now under investigation by the consumer product safety commission after 22 reports of fires in 17 states. the most recent incident happened inside a texas mall. overheating batteries are the main concern. the cpsc has also received 70 reports of hoverboard-related injuries which wre treated at emergency rooms. most of the injuries have been related to falls or collisions--but some did include smoke inhalation from a fire. several u.s. airlines have banned hoverboards from checked and carry-on luggage...and amazon has stopped selling some brands. the massive storm system which pounded the middle of the u.s. continues to cause havoc-- today, it arrived in the

and rain. chris pollone reports that air travelers are now dealing with more cancellations and delays. no snow today in new york city, but sleet, fog, and rain were enough to cause cancellations and delays at the city's three major airports. "it's just frustrating. i've been in new york for 12 years now. i hate to say it but it's kind of par for the course every time there is bad weather." a large system moving across the north and east caused a ripple effect for air travelers throughout the country. with places like boston, chicago and new york leading the list of cancellations and delays. "it's been a very tedious process, it's been stressful." the snow and ice in the northeast come from the same system which tore through the nation's midsection over the weekend, spawning tornadoes and floods. and leaving at least 43 people dead. it made driving treacherous in upstate new york and throughout new england. and dumped the first snow of the season on massachusetts, just days after it saw

steve spurrier told wis he knew his time was up as the coach. sports director rick henry has a look back at this year's number four story in our year in review. on october 13th, the head ball coach, steve spurrier officially announced his resignation as coach of the spurrier had led usc since november of 2004. his last game was a 45 to 24 time for him to step aside. "back in 2004, i think i was probably the best coach for this job 11 years ago, but i'm not you've had your run, and its ready to pass it to the next guy. and

today." even though spurrier's last season with the gamecocks was a losing one, he leaves as carolina's winningest coach in program history with an 86 and 49 record. he led the team to its first and only sec eastern division title and five bowl victories. before he arrived, usc had won only three bowl games.
