"i hope they work together. we need new blood." unity was the word as new councilmen ed mcdowell and howard duvall and relected councilman moe baddourah took their oaths of office. "this year, i think people can expect continued big thinking, some really basic blocking and tackling, making sure we're doing the things that local government's supposed to do, but really seeing people work together to move the city forward." but mayor steve benjamin did not endorse duvall or mcdowell, and instead, supported their opponents. columbia business owner joe azar says the dynamic has definitely changed on council. morning... a manhunt is underway after someone shot and killed a 19-year-old man at a student housing complex near florida atlantic university. a lockdown was in effect at the complex for several hours. officers patrolled the area late last night. police say they're looking for five people for questioning in the murder. "general" lee holman died friday... just two days before the death of meadowlark lemon. holman was a columbia native who played with the globetrotters between 1976 and 1982. his widow, loula may, spoke to wis-- describing the general as a "gentle giant" who had a presence on the court...but was quiet in his personal life. "people didn't realize that he was actually bashful. and the time that he would come out was playing resistance at every chance and would quell situations, because he liked peace." loula and the general met in san francisco and were married for 18 years. she says he spent a lot of time working as a counselor at a boys and girls home after leaving the globetrotters. his funeral will be held today.
