today, thursday, january 7th, 2016. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everybody. welcome to "today" on a thursday morning. if you call it powerball fever, when the jackpot is $450 million, what are we going to do saturday? >> going to explode. spontaneous human combustion. >> after taxes, it's pretty good. >> getting interesting. >> we'll that have in a minute. breaking news. the race to free a group of miners who have been trapped for hours more than 70 stories below ground in upstate new york. tom costello is following the latest on this rescue operation. >> the fire department calling this a major rescue operation that's playing out as we speak.

to help free 17 miners who have been trapped all night underneath the cayuga salt mine. they're planning to lower a basket down to lift out the miners two or three at a time. the 17 miners became trapped about 10:20 last night when they were headed down to the mine. 300 feet below ground, starting their shift. the mine operator cargill says none of the trapped miners is injured and rescuers have been able to lower down water, heat packs and blankets to them. unclear how long it might take to lift them all to safety. the mine has been operating since 1922. it processes 2 million tons of road salt each year. guys, back to you. >> we'll keep an eyen that. tom costello, thank you. bad news if you were hoping to wake up this morning as the nation's newest multi-millionaire. there was no powerball jackpot winner last night. the $500 million plus rolls over

it's going to get crazy good on saturday. nbc's kerry sanders is back on powerball watch again. kerry, good morning. >> good morning. if you're waking up this morning and you got to go to work and you're sad, maybe this will cheer you up. take a look at how much larger the jackpot is when they do the it on saturday. before you take your tickets and rip them up before you lost, look at the numbers that were pulled last night. this would have been a record jackpot at $550 million. it would have been the fourth largest jackpot. there was at least one winner. somebody got $1 million on their ticket in the houston area. here are the numbers again. the powerball numbers are 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and that powerball number was 17. no winners there. the ticket buying frenzy will

yesterday, when the ticket value of the jackpot was going to be $550 million, they were selling more than 1,300 tickets a second. a tremendous number of tickets being sold. now it's $675 million. consider this, guys, that is more than the budgets of some tiny nations. it's a lot of money. >> well put, kerry. it's a lot of money. thank you very much. let's move to politics now. in the presidential race, donald trump is escalating his attacks on republican rival ted cruz, reiterating questions about the texas senator's eligibility to run for president. another prominent republican is suggesting the issue is worth looking into. peter alexander has the latest. good morning. >> savannah, good morning. wait until you hear who is siding with donald trump on this one. it's senator john mccain. trump says he doesn't want to undermine ted cruz. this morning, praising him on

canadian citizenship 18 months ago. but cruz is accusing trump of simply trying to distract from the real issues in the race by making political noise. >> are you ready? >> reporter: donald trump trying to find out whether ted cruz, born in canada, is allowed to be president of the u.s. >> how do you run against a democrat, whoever it may be, and you have this over your head, if they bring a lawsuit. >> reporter: cruz dismissed his concerns. >> the laws of the united states are straight forward. the very first congress defined it as a natural born citizen. >> reporter: trump is finding an unlikely ally in john mccain. >> he's not a war hero. >> war hero. >> because he was captured. >> reporter: the party's 2008 nominee, born in the panama canal zone, a u.s. territory. >> it's different from being born on foreign soil. i think there is a question.

trump's next rally is in burlington, vermont, home to bernie sanders. local police there are seriously concerned about over ticketing. the campaign issued about 20,000 tickets to a 1,400 seat venue. the residents being warned to expect overflow demonstrations in the streets. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. >> does it come down to shoes? one man who didn't get into the presidential race, vice president joe biden. now, he is expressing some regret over that decision. nbc's senior white house correspondent chris jansing has that part of the story. good morning. >> good morning, matt. joe biden has always been a politician who wears his heart on his sleeve. more than two months after he stood here in the rose garden, president obama, at his side, to announce he would not run for president. biden says candidly, he wishes things were different. >> sure, i regret it every day,

hebdo" attacks, and there were commemorations happening in relation to that anniversary. what we understand, and a lot of this is unconfirmed at this point, is a man with a knife entered this police station in northern paris. there are unconfirmed reports there were wires extending from his clothing and he may have had some sort of suicide belt on. also, unconfirmed reports by nbc news that he shouted before brandishing this knife. a lot of this still coming in, still developing. he was shot and killed at that police station in that neighborhood in northern paris, which has been locked down as police investigate. again, savannah, a lot of these details about whether or not there was, in fact, a suicide vest, and whether or not this was a potentialter rust terrorist attack, still unconfirmed. we'll let you know as we hear more. savannah? >> kelly cobiella, thank you.

dangerous el nino powered storms wreaked wreaking havoc across california. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer, a few miles north of los angeles this morning. what can you tell us? >> matt, good morning. the l.a. river has dipped a bit, but it's been surging for days. for so many yearhere, it's been too much water, too quickly. >> reporter: overnight, more rain, another washout. this, the latest in a series of storms fueled by el nino. homes aresubmerged. this professor wading through class. the lesson goes on. where there was fires days ago, there are now torre entnts of mud. voluntary evacuations downhill, where homes could be buried in landslides. >> we've done a lot of preparation.

sandbags around the house. >> reporter: with 19 million bracing for flash flooding, the warm waters from el nino are contributing to a conveyer belt of storms. slamming california one after another. in the northern part of the state, the forecast calls for 15 inches in 16 days. after years of dry conditions, california is now seeing tornado warnings, funnel clouds and mudslides. like the mounting damage, this morning, more rain is coming. >> and it's not just rain. we're seeing feet of snow in the mountains. this nasty weather should taper off later on today. guys, it'll be right back here later on this weekend. >> miguel, thank you very much. if you're trying to eat healthier in the new year, the u.s. government is out with new dietary guidelines. among the recommendations, limit your intake of added sugars often found in beverages and

after realizing she couldn't care for them. the director of the orangeburg county animal control says 22 horses were taken in, but 2 had to be euthanized because of medical problems. investigators say the elderly owner acquired the horses over time. she was trying to nurse them back to health, but didn't have the funds to feed them. the woman surrendered all of the horses, and is not facing charges at this time. jobs are going away for some hospital workers in the midlands. kershawhealth yesterday said it's cutting 26 jobs reducing it's workforce by about 3 percent. the hospital system says it's getting fewer patients and needs to bring its costs in line. kershaw is in the process of transferring management of the hospital to capella healthcare, which will take over operations this spring. officials at kershawhealth say they're working to help the laid off employees find new

>> reporter: a season cancelled and a community in crisis. three tennessee high school students are facing charges of aggravated rape and aggravated assault for brutal, alleged attacks on teammates during a hazing ritual. according to members of the ooltewah high school basketball team, four underclassman players were physically assaulted on december 22nd in a cabin where the team was staying during a tournament. one of those students, according to the victim report, was also sexually assaulted with a pool cue, receiving worse treatment because he spoke up to three of the players carrying out the attacks. the alleged attackers, two cough mother -- sophomores and one senior, have been kicked off the team, is suspended from school and charged. two are in custody. the freshman victim was released from the hospital after surgery and eight days of treatment. he's left the school. in a meeting wednesday night,

rick smith cancelled the basketball season. >> i'm extremely limited in what i can say or communicate public i. i i am heartbroken about this. >> reporter: more students are speaking out. four students telling investigators the incident was not isolated. part of a standing tradition called beating in. alleging previous hazing also occurred in the locker rooms on campus with the lights off. the alleged rape victims family calling for the coach to be fired. other students say the ritual existed before he was coach. the coach's attorney now denying those claims of a hazing culture. telling nbc affiliate wrcb, the issue affecting our community is not hazingeing or bullying. rather, it is the unilateral decision of three individuals currently charged with a sexual offense. sexual offenses must not be reduced to popular buzzwords like hazing or bullying, ever. >> two of the juveniles charged

it centers on a case in simi valley last summer, before a strick of outbreaks that has since sickened hundreds. >> reporter: more bad news for a once favorite fast food chain, struggling through an unprecedented series of food born illnesses. chipotle announcing a grand jury subpoenaed documents relating to a norovirus outbreak last summer in simi valley, california. 207 people were sickened and some hospitalized. the victim attorney, bill marler. >> severe stomach cramps, diarrhea. sometimes they need medical attention for rehydration. >> reporter: while a grand jury is looking into that outbreak, hundreds of others have been sickened in unrelated chipotle cases. including 5 people in nine states who became i'll on an e. coli outbreak.

news conference with members of her domestic violence task force today. she's expected to announce the progress the group has made at 2pm at the state house. governor haley launched the task force last january to address the cultural issues surrounding domestic violence in the state. the task force is chaired by the governor and made up of representatives from more than 40 organizations statewide. meanwhile, students at one midlands high school are working to tackle domestic violence among teens. juniors in ridge view high school's business and law magnet are advocating for "sierra's law." the petition was initiated in 2014 by the parents of sierra landry, who investigators say was killed by an abusive ex- boyfriend. if passed in the state legislature, sierra's law would allow teens under the age of 18 to get orders of protection from abusive partners. south carolina schools would also offer teen dating violence awareness programs.

new york began pulling trapped salt miners to safety this morning. 17 men were stuck in an elevateor 900 feet below group ground. the men were cold but not injured. rescuers sent water and heat packs to the miners until they were hoisted to safety. if you're getting on a plane, listen up. a driver's license will no longer be accepted as a form of id when getting on a domestic commercial flight from five u.s. states. illinois, minnesota, missouri, new mexico and washington state. the reason those five states have been ruled non-compliant under the real id act passed ten years ago, which outlines stricter standards for state-issued ids given by the government. in those states, you will also need a passport. to more on something we touched on earlier. updated dietary guidelines being released by federal regulators. nbc news's medical contributor
