three days from now a new college football champion will be crowned in arizona. and clemson fans hope monday will bring a second title in school history. today the tigers were given a big send-off at death valley--as they made the cross country journey to arizona. sports director rick henry was at the phoenix airport tonight as the championship-hungry tigers stepped off the plane. he has more from paradise valley. the clemson and alabama football

national championship game. we'll also be airing a live special monday after the news at 7. live coverage continues tomorrow on wis saturday morning at 9 am. the trip to the national championship brings back thrilling memories for one tiger's fan who was there on the sidelines the last time...thirty four years ago. pat cassels was a sophomore and a cheerleader for clemson when the team won the 1981 national championship. now pat and her husband tobin are making the trip to glendale for the big game on monday. pat says, she hopes the tigers can beat the odds-makers just l le they did in '82. "back in 1981 they didn't give us a snowball's chance of winning the game. the announcers didn't even know where clemson was and they had to put up a map on tv to point out that it was located in the state of south carolina. and most

through a home in richland county. city fire crews responded to the 1100 block of quiet lane off of decker boulevard at around 5 p- m. responders say they encountered heavy smoke but quickly got the fire under control. they say the person was found in the back of the home --- where it looks like the fire started. "apparently the fire crews went in...as they began to

"going back to i think october of last year...i think this makes the third fatality that we've h h..uhh i think this is actually the first fatality for this calander year. uhh so three for the winter season so far and one for the calander year." county offcials can't say at this point whether the victim is a male or a female. the county fire marshal's office is looking into what caused the fire. richland county authorities are trying to figure out what killed a man found outside a home in columbia 34-year-old mario kelly was found dead this morning on the front porch of a relative's house on queen street. the coroner says kelly died from a deep cut in his head...but it's unclear how it happened. the richland county sheriff's department says new dna technology led to two arrests for a man's murder in northeast richland county.

handle--sheriff were able to track down two suspects believed to be behind the murder at the spinx gas station on lee road on december 13th. investigators say ryan alston and ibn gadson of eutawville were arrested and charged after testing through the richland county crime lab. both men face charges of murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping the lexington one school board has narrowed its list for superintendent down to three finalists after a nationwide search. tonight, the board has announced greg little, "lonnie" luce, and jeffrey salters as the three choices. the decision comes after the announcement by current superintendent karen woodard that she is retiring. lexington one says the candidates will spend some time next week meeting with principals and other leaders in the district. the board hopes to make a decision in the next couple of weeks federal health officials say millions have already signed on for health coverage during open enrollment. the department of health and human services says

meanwhile, several groups are looking to know where each of the candidates stand on stopping hunger. the vote to end hunger coalition includes leaders from harvest hope food bank and senior resources. today at the state house, members of the group said they intend to pose policy questions to the candidates on eliminating hunger and poverty nationwide. "we need the government to set up policies that promote opportunities for everybody and also provide help..so the social safety net..investment in education.those things are just a crucial part." the coalition says it also intend to get its message in front of likely voters. according to the south carolina food bank association more than 840 thousand south carolinians are living below the poverty line. tomorrow is the day we take big strides to beat breast cancer in the midlands. last year, more than 11,000 walkers, runners, sponsors and supporters helped raise more than $800-thousand dollars for

steel cables along the edge of the garage kept the vehicle from falling. an officer reached into the rear left door and pulled the driver out to safety. the woman was taken to a hospital for observation and was arrested for driving under the influence. outgoing charleston mayor joe riley got a surprise farewell by city employees today on his last full day in office. the employees lined up outside charleston city hall to greet the mayor as he left for work this afternoon. they say it was their way of saying thank you to the man who has served as mayor since 1975. many of those employees have worked for riley for years. riley will leave office on monday at noon, as mayor-elect john tecklenburg is sworn in to office. a treasured piece of history donated to a texas thrift shop has now sold for thousands of dollars. an augusta national golf club green jacket from

in a bundle of clothing a shop executive declined to say the exact selling price or the identity of the buyer who made the purchase today. she did say, however, that the jacket would likely sell at auction for about 18 thousand dollars...and that the sale met expectations. "this morning, in the municipality of los mochis, sinaloa, members of government security institutions achieved the capture of joaquin guzman loera." the mexican druglord has been on the run after a daring july 11th escape...his second successful flight from a mexican prison. the president called the recapture "an achievement that was the result of the coordination of our armed forces, the mexican army, the mexican navy, federal police, the country's attorney general's office and the center for investigation and national security. the navy said in a statement said that marines stormed into a home in the town of los

mexican soldiers had surrounded the home after a neighbor reported gun-toting men inside the residence, according to the navy. they were fired on from inside the building. five suspects were killed and six others arrested, the navy said. guzman, leader of the sinaloa drug cartel and a master of underground tunnels, set off a manhunt on july 11, 2015, when he escaped into a hole in his shower at a prison near mexico city...authorities said he fled through a mile-long tunnel on a motorbike that led to a residential construction site. guzman had escaped from prison once before, in 2001. that time, authorities said he escaped hidden in a laundry cart.
