just a few moments -- that number was reduced to about 230, so crews are making progress. many of the homes and businesses are along hardscrabble road, including parts of the summit, and lake carolina. we'll be monitoring the situation throughout the morning right here on sunrise. a story all new from overnight... columbia crews are looking into a fire that damaged a home on olde springs road shortly after midnight. the home is at the back entrance of spring valley where it intersects with flora drive. firefighters had that area blocked off for more than an hour as crews worked to put out the flames. smoke was still visibile from the home more than an hour after it was first reported. you can see the home has significant damage to the roof. we have calls into columbia fire and will bring you new information as soon as we learn more. i-95 northbound is back open in orangeburg county after a crash that blocked two lanes of traffic. an overturned 18-wheeler shut down part of the interstate near the i-26 west exit monday

the crash and cleanunuclosed all the lanes in that direction and caused a backup for hours. we have calls into highway patrol and sc- d-o-t to find out if there were any injuries. several richland county council leaders are expected to meet tonight to discuss proposals meant to fix problems within the penny tax program. those leaders are part of the transporation ad hoc committee. richland county council chairman torrey rush tells wis -- councilman kelvin washington, who was arrested just weeks ago on tax charges has been removed from the committee. councilman norman jackson has been removed as well. the committee oversees projects related to the county's transportation penny, which is still under the microscope after a department of revenue audit found discrepancies. councilman seth rose has been added to the committee as one of the replacements. weeks ago he proposed several changes in an effort to bring more transparency to the penny program. "well, i've taken an active role by sponsoring the motions that i think will be a major start in the

the penny program, and i wanted to be a part of the committee, so i could help advocate for these motions and other measures that i think will be very important going forward." when asked why he removed the two councilmen, rush said all committees are re- appointed at the beginning of the year, so he decided to reshuffle the committee. wis reached out to councilman washington for comment but has not heard back. however, councilman jackson says he is very upset that he was removed. we'll have more from the committee meeting tonight on wis. hundreds marched to statehouse for the king day at the dome rally hosted by the south carolina naacp. it was one of the biggest king day events in the southeast. speakers talked to the crowd about justice, equity in education and the shooting at mother emanuel ame in charleston which ultimately led to the removal of the confederate battle flag from the statehouse-- something the naacp had been pushing for, for years. "i'd like for us to continue to carry on trying to achieve his dream for all of us and i do have some concerns that our numbers won't

they ought to be because we may feel a sense of accomplishment because the flag has come down but we need to continue to be here and show support for achieving the dream." the dome. bernie sanders, hillary clinton and martin o'malley each gave a brief message monday on unity and king's ideals of equality. a big focus of this year's event was education. presidential candidate "in our state, even in the middle of a recession, rather than cutting public education, we increased public education funding by 37 percent!" presidential candidate "why are there millions of families in this country struggling to feed their children?" presidential candidate "this day is devoted to improving education, and i hope for the children of south carolina progress is possible." also there yesterday was candidate willie wilson, whose name is on the ballot in a handful of states including south carolina. one of the g-o-p presidential contenders also paid the midlands a visit. dr. ben carson spoke to a crowd of about 200 people at brookland baptist church in west columbia. state attorney general alan wilson moderated monday's forum. carson touched on illegal immigration and defeating isis.

"i want everybody in the world to know what a great kid he was. and that's why i'm here right now, that's why i'm talking to you"

"i was working as a nurse in the er, i had a lot of back pain and it was difficult to pinpoint the symptoms i had until i started bleeding and the bleeding got worse." doctors diagnosed cribb with small cell neuroendocrine cancer. "it's a rare and aggressive type of cervical cancer. it's less than 1 percent of all cervical cancer that just gives you an idea on how rare this is." since june, cribb has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments at south carolina oncology, at one point her condition appeared to be improving. "it actually shrunk the tumor on my cervix so we were very hopeful." but at the start of the new year, that hope was quickly lost . "a recent scan showed that it pread to my liver and both lungs." the once energetic athlete and nurse says the past couple of months have been a

away from you- such as portable fireplaces. if you have kids, you're advised to create a "kid- free" zone around open fires and space heaters. they also say never use your oven to heat your home. as always, test your smoke alarms monthly and have your heating equipment and chimneys cleaned inspected every year. breaking overnight in the wis alert center... 11 people are reported dead this morning in a suicide bombing near a police pakistan. a local official says another 21 people were wounded in the tuesday morning blast. investigators says the attack appears to have been carried out by a suicide bomber, who struck a local police chief at the checkpoint. right now, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. the road to recovery from october's historic flooding has been a long one. and tonight richland county leaders are taking steps to ensure the damage we saw -- doesn't happen again. our michal higdon is live in the

richland county leaders want to hear directly from you about the damage you experienced from october's flooding. your input will help the county develop what it's calling a "flood mitigation study." some of the areas hardest hit during the flooding are in lower richland, and along the gills creek and stoop creek watersheds. you can see from the video on your screen, folks in those areas are still in the cleanup and rebuilding process. that neighborhood you're seeing is one right near gills creek that suffered significant damage when the creek flooded. while workers say the area will never be the same, the cleanup process is said to be progressing for residents to come back to live in their homes. "you can see it moving forward. we've been out here for three months, pretty much every day other than sundays. you can see people out and rebuilding. we've been cutting trees. like i said every day trying to get things squared away and getting the houses rebuilt."

dead at the scene monday night on pisgah road in north augusta. authorities say the cause of the crash may have been a significant road defect and excessive speed. toxicology tests are also underway. sumter police say a mother reported missing since friday has contacted them. investigators say 27- year-old shardae davis told a detective she was ok, but didn't want to come to the police because of an outstanding shoplifting warrant in horry county. investigators say they still consider her missing until they can meet her in person. officers say they are still looking for herbert butler for questioning in davis' disappearance. he is also wanted on a warrant for domestic violence. officers found davis' two-year-old and 5-week- old children alone friday evening at their home. anyone with information is asked to call crimestoppers at 1-888- crime-sc. authorities in clarendon county are investigating the case of a woman who ended up dead in a lake after two accidents. the clarendon county coroner says michelle hickson of florence was involved in a crash on i-95 near the orangeburg county line.

two men following an encounter at a boston nightclub. he has pleaded not guilty to the incident. last year, hernandez was convicted of the murder of his friend odin lloyd and sentenced to life in prison. rescue crews have expanded the search for twelve marines missing after its believed two helicopters collided off the coast of hawaii last thursday. authorities say they have retrieved three of the four life rafts that were carried aboard the helicopters just off the hawaiian coast. they do not believe anyone was aboard the rafts at any time. among the missing is 22-year-old jeffrey sempler from the upstate. a vigil for sempler was held yesterday in woodruff. investigators still trying to figure out what caused the crash. the search continues for a tennessee toddler who has been missing since last thursday. vanished during a hiking trip with his grandmother and sister. volunteers and police officers have been searching day and night. investigators still consider it a search and resuce mission, and they believe they will find noah alive. they say his family is

no criminal investigation. don mclean, who sang the famous 70's song "american pie," has gotten in some trouble with the law. the singer is charged with domestic violence assault. police arrested him at his home in camden, maine yesterday. mclean was released after a few hours on 10- thousand dollars unsecured bail. he's expected to be back in court in february. police haven't yet released the name of the victim, nor any other details on what happened. one of the founding members of the rock band "the eagles" has died. glenn frey passed away on monday due to complications with rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. frey formed the band with don henley back in 1971. some of the most popular songs of group include "hotel california" and "take it easy." glenn frey was 67 years old. arctic air will push temperatures into the upper teens, lower 20s tuesday morning. highs will struggle through the

upper teens, lower 20s tuesday thursday into friday. to middle 50s to finish the columbia crews are looking into a fire that damaged a home on olde springs road shortly after midnight. the home is at the back entrance of spring valley where it intersects with flora drive. firefighters had that area blocked off for more than an hour as crews worked to put out the flames. smoke was still visibile from the home more than an hour after it was first reported. you can see the home has

and will bring you new information as soon as we learn more. richland county leaders hope we never see damage again like what we saw during october's flooding. it's why a meeting is being held tonight to allow homeowners to give their thoughts on preventing future problems. our michal higdon is live in the newsroom with the details. richland county officials say the hardest hit areas were in lower richland, the gills creek watershed and stoop creek watershed. tonight's meeting is a chance for the community to voice their concerns about damage and recurrent problems they've seen since october's flooding. residents are encouraged to bring photographs and other documentation regarding damage to homes and property. the first of several flood input meetings in richland county will be tonight at st. andrews park in columbia. the address is right there on your screen and is set to start at 5:30. officials will then use all the information provided to help develop a future flood mitigation plan. i'll have more details on that

the richland county councilman who was arrested just weeks ago on tax charges has been removed from an important council committee. the council chairman tells wis that councilman kelvin washington has been taken off the county's transportation ad hoc committee, which oversees projects related to the county's transportation penny. that penny program is still under the microscope after an audit by the department of revenue found discrepancies. councilman norman jackson has been taken off the council committee too. councilman seth rose has been added on. the chairman is still looking for the second replacement. leaders are expected to discuss a collection of proposals tonight meant to fix the problems with the penny tax program. "well, i've taken an active role by sponsoring the motions that i think will be a major start in the corrections that are needed with the penny program, and i wanted to be a part of the committee, so i could help advocate for

other measures that i think will be very important going forward." chairman torrey rush said all committees are reappointed at the beginning of the year, so he decided to reshuffle the committee. wis reached out to councilman washington for comment but didn't hear back. however, councilman jackson said he was very upset that he was removed from the committee. he said it could be some kind of cover-up but didn't elaborate. in the wis alert center this morning... reports that the world's oldest man had died at the age of 112. a japanese man, yasu- taro koheeday was born on march 13th, 1903. he said his secret to a long life was taking it easy, and avoidinindrinking and smoking. he became the world's oldest man last august. the ministry of health, labor and welfare reported his death earlier today. he was just two months short of his 113th birthday. a discovery of human remains in anderson county has led officials to seek the help of an anthropologist. our sister station in the upstate says the anthropologist will join the

office to help investigators. officials say the human remains were found sunday in a wooded area off highway 153. the anderson county coroner's office says the remains could have been there for months and there's no way to determine the age, gender or race. sled is also assisting in the investigation. nbc has released new information this morning say the democratic debate over in charleston was the third most watched democratic debate in history. hillary clinton, bernie sanders and martin o'malley took the stage at the gaillard center sunday night. the network says the debate was watched by more than 12 point five million viewers. sunday's debate reportedly attracted more young viewers than the two previous democratic debates. meanwhile, those candidates shared the stage at king day at the dome yesterday. bernie sanders, hillary clinton and martin o'malley each gave a brief message on unity, and king's ideals of equality. the big theme of this year's event was equality in education, with speakers on the stage talking about the need to improve education for

expects to have a major natural gas leak in los angeles sealed by late february. that's after they say, they've given up trying to trap and burn the gas being released. so-cal-gas says it's just too dangerous, and instead they will continue drilling a relief well, which they say is ahead of schedule. thousands of residents welcomed this announcement. methane gas has been spewing into the atmosphere from a leak at the site since october of last year. emissions from the leak have been making residents sick. it's being called the largest gas leak in us history. numerous communities throughout the midlands are still recovering from october's devastating floods. and richland county leadads want businesses and homeowners to know they're not alone in recovery. our michal higdon is live in the newsroom with more on meetings being held tonight -- to prevent more

if you have paperwork and photos from october's flood or recurrent flooding that's affected your home -- richland county officials want you gather all of that documentation for an important strategizing meeting tonight. richland county leaders are looking to develel a future flood mitigation plan. right now there is still very visible damage at homes in neighborhoods hardest hit from october's floods. those areas include lower richland county, the gills creek watershed and stoop creek watershed. while construction crews are working to finish the rebuilding as quickly as possible.... the meeting itself will include interactive mapping stations, questionnaires and opportunities for residents to submit comments and share information about damage they've experienced from flooding. "what could be done different or what could they offer? the infrastructure, the dams need to be updated. you know, past that level i really don't know. i think that the community stepped up big time though."

brought traffic to a halt on san francisco's iconic bay bridge. the group lined up along the westbound lanes of the bridge. they appeared to chain- link their vehicles together as they held signs and marched yesterday. traffic was backed up for several miles and the bridge closed down. the protesters ended up getting placed in handcuffs by police. 70 more national guard troops have arrived in flint, michigan amid an ongoing water crisis. troops visited five thousand homes to prove free bottled water and filters for families. the city has been grappling with toxic lead contamination in its drinking water, following a cost-saving measure that involved switching the water supply. a doctor at the french hospital where five patients were hospitalized after a drug trial went wrong said that their condition has improved. doctor gilles brassier says three people are now being cared for by neurology services near their homes. french prosecutors launched a manslaughter investigation after one of the trial participants died. a new bipartisan senate bill is expected to revise healthier meal standards in

columbia fire is s minding you about heating safety in your home when temperatures drop this low. they say keep the space around any portable space heaters, furnaces and fireplaces clear by at least 3 feet. they also say never use your oven to heat your home. as always, test your smoke alarms monthly and have your heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year. sce&g says a brief power outage county was caused by a power pole that caught fire. you may have noticed the outage if you live along hardscrabble road, including parts of the summit and lake carolina neighborhoods.. power to all of the nearly 3 thousand customers has since been restored this morning. we do not know yet what started the fire that led to the outage. the road to recovery from has been a long one. and tonight richland county leaders are taking steps to ensure the damage we saw -- doesn't happen again. our michal higdon is live in the

richland county leaders want to hear directly from you about the damage you experienced from october's flooding. your input will help the county develop what it's calling a "flood mitigation study." some of the areas hardest hit during the flooding are in lower richland, and along the gills creek and stoop creek watersheds. you can see from the video on your screen, folks in those areas are still in the cleanup and rebuilding process. that neighborhood you're seeing is one right near gills creek that suffered significant damage when the creek flooded. while workers say the area will never be the same, the cleanup process is said to be progressing for residents to come back to live in their homes. in the wis alert center this morning... a police chase that ended on a california freeway left officers trying to catch six puppies from the suspect's car. the chase started monday night when the driver failed to stop for california highway patrol officers. take a look at this video. police evetually rammed the car to get it to stop. after the woman exited the car, three of the dogs ran out onto the blocked freeway. eventually the loose dogs were wrangled by police. the driver is now in police custody and all six dog are being cared for by vets. republican presidential candidate ben carson will be campaigning in the lowcountry today. carson will hold a meet and greet at the charleston rotary club over in mount pleasant. he'll also address the greater lowcountry republican club at the country club of charleston. yesterday, carson spoke to a crowd of about 200 people at the brookland baptist church in west columbia. attorney general alan wilson moderated the forum. carson touched on illegal immigration, the role of

he decided to reshuffle the committee. wis reached out to councilman washington for comment but didn't hear back. however, councilman jackson said he was very upset that he was removed from the committee. he said it could be some kind of cover-up but didn't elaborate. richland county leaders hope we never see damage again like what we saw during october's flooding. it's why a meeting is being held tonight to allow homeowners to give their thoughts on preventing future problems. our michal higdon is live in the newsroom with the details. richland county officials say the hardest hit areas were in lower richland, the gills creek watershed and stoop creek watershed. tonight's meeting is a chance for the community to voice their concerns about damage and recurrent problems they've seen since october's flooding. residents are encouraged to bring photographs and other documentation regarding damage to homes and property. the first of several flood input meetings in richland county will be tonight at st. andrews park in columbia. the address is right there on

to start at 5:30. officials will then use all the information provided to help develop a future flood mitigation plan. i'll have more details on that in about 10 minutes. the spartanburg county coroner's officer has asked an anthropologist for help identify human remains. officials say the human remains were found sunday in a wooded area off highway 153. they could have been there for months and there's no way to determine the age, gender or race right now. sled is also assisting in the investigation. rescue crews have expanded the search for twelve marines missing after its believed two helicopters collided off the coast of hawaii last thursday. authorities say they have retrieved three of the four life rafts that were carried aboard the helicopters just off the hawaiian coast. they do not believe anyone was aboard the rafts at any time. among the missing is 22-year-old jeffrey sempler from the upstate. a vigil for sempler was held yesterday in woodruff. investigators still trying to figure out what caused the

a doctor at the french hospital where five patients were hospitalized after a drug trial went wrong said that their condition has improved. doctor gilles brassier says three people are now receiving neurology treatment near their homes. french prosecutors launched a manslaughter investigation after one of the trial participants died. the tests contained a drug to ease pain and anxiety. the futuristic lab program, once called "google x," now has a new name and logo. it's now simply called "x," and it's represented by a 3-d yellow x. it's known mostly for investing in technologies that directors believe will shape the future. x has placed big bets on driverless cars, as well as wi-fi balloons and drones. x separated from google last year. an umbrella company called "alphabet" was formed to oversee them all.
