trump is hosting today's event to benefit veterans organizations at drake university at 9pm, the same time his rivals will take the main debate stage ... about 3 miles away. the intended victim in a columbia barber shop robbery who fought back and shot at the robbers says he doesn't know what would have happened if he didn't have his gun. billy bookman was one of two people in the "next up barbershop" who pulled their own guns after two armed men in masks held the place up. they shot at the robbers and killed one of them. concealed weapons teacher brian sweat says based on surveillance video of the incident, the men who fought back did everything correctly and may have prevented victims from being killed. bookman says it looked like a dangerous situation and he was glad to be armed. "what would have happened if i didn't have it? you know, the guy was running around in here, just demanding money and yelling and stuff like that so, i mean i don't know what would have happened if i didn't have it." columbia police are still

they're still looking for another man for the robbery. anyone with information on that person should call 1-888-crime-sc. a trial date is now set for the confessed charleston church shooter. dylann roof's trial is scheduled to begin on july 11. documents show that 600 people will be called initially to serve as potential jurors. roof is accused of gunning down nine people inside emanual a-m-e church in june of last year. the fbi and oregon state police say they've arrested three more people connected to the armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge. those arrests come just a day after a member of the group was killed, and the leaders were taken into custody by police and federal agents. jay gray has more. it happened along this stretch of highway 395.. a remote area police and federal agents say they picked, to reduce the chance of violence.. but as officers pulled over a caravan of leaders from an anti- government protest group..

refuge they have occupied for almost a month -- something went wrong.. federal wildlife refuge are now in custody. and we're learning -- there may be a possible end in sight for the weeks-long protest. ammon bundy one of the leaders of the occupation is now telling his followers to go home. bundy made the statement following his arraignment. he and 7 others were taken into custody tuesday after a traffic checkpoint. one of those ranchers was killed after shots were fired. we're also learning from an unsealed criminal complaint that the armed group had explosives and night-vision goggles. authorities believe 10 members remain in the refuge. it is all the buzz in politics this morning: tonight's republican presidential debate without donald trump. will being a no-show help him or hurt him in iowa? nbc's tracie potts has more on that story from washington this morning. :00-:04 donald trump's feud with fox news and anchor megan kelly has led to one less candidate on stage tonight.

the recent death of a lancaster county man has sparked yet another national recall of airbag inflators. joel knight was killed in december after his ford ranger collided with a cow. federal officials with the national highway traffic and safety administration say the airbag inflator deployed and propelled a piece of metal that hit and killed him. while previous recalls have involved older model vehicles ....this new one includes at least one 20- 14 model. knight's death is one of 11 now linked to faulty airbags from takata. "this is a completely avoidable tragedy where a man lost his life because of a product that was supposed to save his life." takata airbags released a statement saying quote: "our heartfelt condolences go out to the driver's family. we are cooperating fully with regulators and our automotive customers and continue to take aggressive action to advance vehicle safety, including through our ongoing testing efforts, replacement kit production, and raising

in the wis alert center this morning... a suspect wounded in the exchange of gunfire with a georgia state tropper near atlanta has died. officials say the suspect, 26-year-old israel vladmir rodriquez died late last night in the hospital. investigators says rodriquez was speeding at 100 mph when trooper jacob fields attempted to pull him over last night. the suspect led fields on a 10 mile chase down i- 75...when he eventually got out and began shooting. you can see that scene where traffic was backed up on the interstate for hours last night. we're told the officer is expected to make a full

employees at a cayce bank of america are credited with helping investigators make a quick arrest after a robbery. investigators say 61- year-old tommy slife was arrested just minutes after he was accused of holding up the knox abbott drive branch yesterday. workers gave a detailed description of the suspect, which investigators say helped lead to slife's arrest just a short distance away. he's in lexington county detention center awaiting a bond hearing. columbia police hope recent surveillance photos will help nab a man accused of stealing money from a local convenience store. take a look at your screen. police say this man jumped over the counter of this store at a shell gas police say the man grabbed the store clerk, but the victim was not hurt. if you recognize the man in these photos, call crimestoppers at 1-888- crime-sc. if you're looking to secure health insurance this year, the enrollment deadly is quickly approaching. you need to be signed up by sunday night at 11:59. our michal higdon is live in the

"for most people employer-based coverage, as long as it meets what they call 'minimally- essential benefits.' so as long as its covering doctors visits, in-patient stays, emergency room, the gambit of most health insurance needs -- then

"what we have going, and it's really important, it's a movement. it's not like a normal situation." on tuesday, trump said he won't participate in tonight's debate on fox news, because of a previous debate he thought was unfair. instead, he'll host a competing event in iowa -- a benefit for veterans. last night, told his supporters in gilbert that he hopes to raise a lot of money for those vets and wounded warriors. state senators will meet again today to discuss south carolina road repairs. yesterday, members of the senate finance committee met to agreed that more money needs to be put into bridges and highways. some lawmakers discussed a new tax cut which would lover the state's five persent sales tax. that would bring in money to offset the senate's proposal to raise the gas tax and fees to bring in an extra 665 million dollars for roads. "if we can come together on a different verison of

don't know 18 or 19 strong votes of support in this committee, i personally would be very open to that." a senate transportation subcommittee tossed around ideas on how to revamp the selection process for dot commissioners as part of the reform plan. meanwhile, lexington is continuing to push forward with plans to improve town traffic. this month, the town has incorporated five new "adaptive" traffic lights. the lights are designed to count cars and change their timing based on the buildup at certain intersections. so far they've been placed where east main street meets church street and lake drive...as well as where west main street meets park road and old chapin road. 19 intersections are expected to be equipped with the new lights by this fall. a new house bill will allow the state to pay for high school students and those who are unemployed to train for available jobs in south carolina. the "pathways initiative" was approved to expand dual-enrollment opportunities for high school students. this means they can take courses that count toward their diploma and an associate's degree.

lengthy waits at v-a hospitals and led to the overhaul of the department of veterans affairs. the 46-year-old husband and father was buried wednesday in bethune. a trial date has now been set for the confessed charleston church shooter. dylann roof's trial is scheduled to begin on july 11. documents show that 600 people will be called initially to serve as potential jurors. roof confessed that he gunned down nine people inside emanuel a-m-e church in charleston in june of last year. the south carolina department of consumer affairs says the top scam of 2015 came from people claiming to be with the irs. more than 3-thousand scams were reported last year -- with 40 percent of them identified as imposter scams -- where someone lies about who they are to demand money or personal information. 700 of those calls were irs scammers demanding consumers pay taxes owed or face arrest. the irs says this type of scam has resulted in 23- million-dollars in losses nationally since october of 2013. officials say be wary of anyone

california authorities have arrested 5 people in connection with the escape of those three dangerous inmates from a southern california jail last week. those arrests come as authorities continue the search for those fugitives. the 3 were all awaiting trial for violent crimes when they escaped last friday. investigators believe they had outside help since the tools used by the inmated to carve through steel bars -- were not prison-made. investigators say more arrests are likely and

the recent death of a lancaster county man has sparked yet another national recall of airbag inflators. joel knight was killed in december after his ford ranger collided with a cow. federal officials with the national highway traffic and safety administration say the airbag inflator deployed and propelled a piece of metal that hit and killed him. while previous recalls have involved older model vehicles ....this new one includes at least one 20- 14 model. knight's death is one of 11 now linked to faulty airbags from takata. "this is a completely avoidable tragedy where a man lost his life because of a product that was supposed to save his life." takata airbags released a statement saying quote: "our heartfelt condolences go out to the driver's family. we are cooperating fully with regulators and our automotive customers and continue to take aggressive action to advance vehicle safety, including through our ongoing

replacement kit production, and raising consumer awareness of recalled vehicles." vehicles equipped with automatic braking or front-collision warning could be less likely to cause a rear-end crash. the insurance institute for highway safety says automatic braking can reduce crashes by 40 percent, while front collision warning cuts the rear-end risk by 23 percent. crashes in the survey were caused by acura, honda, subaru, mercedes and volvo cars. 40 percent of vehicles currently have automatic braking. new this morning -- we are getting a look at haunting images from inside a cruise ship that sank in a deadly accident 4 years ago. the costa concordia capsized in 2012 after hitting rocks in the mediterranean sea. it sat for more than 2 years during a massive salvage operation, and was re-floated and taken to genoa in 2014. a german photographer who wrote a book titled "concordia" says he swam out to where it's currently docked, climbed aboard and took these pictures. he says it was freely accessible

illinois police officic who killed himself five months ago has turned herself in to authorities.. a grand jury indicted melodie gliniewicz on six federal counts for her alleged role in her late husband's theft of charitable funds. authorities say lieutenant charles gliniewicz killed himself back in september, but made it look like he was shot by suspects he was chasing in an attempt to keep the crime under wraps. the couple is accused of using the money for a vacation and bills. 30 years ago today one of the great tragedies in american history took place as the space shuttle challenger exploded just 73- seconds after liftoff. all seven astronauts onboard were killed, including christa mcauliffe who was to be the first teacher in space. as part of nasa's annual day of remembrance -- those men and women will be honored along with other nasa personnel who have lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery. as concerns about the zika virus are spreading, one group is taking steps to contain it. ahead at 6:30 -- how they're
