midlands yesterday with a visit from republican frontrunner donald trump. and his visit ended in a major endorsement from a palmetto state political figure. lieutenant governor henry mcmaster publicly threw his support behind trump at the campaign rally, saying trump is the man to get things done. "south carolina is going to have the most decisive primary election this election cycle. we are going to be right in the middle of it and i want everybody to get out and vote and when you do, do like i do and vote for donald trump for president." many people waited in line for

tree farm to see donald trump hold his latest rally. some came to lexington county because they're hardcore trump supporters -- others who are still undecided came to see what he's all about. chad mills was there and has the story. the night started with a big palmetto state endorsement. "donald trump speaks the truth. he's a man of decision. he's a man of action. he speaks the truth as he sees it in words that everybody understands." lieutenant governor henry mcmaster, a long-time republican voice in the state, threw his support behind trump -- an endorsement the candidate gladly accepted as he spoke to a crowd of several thousand -- some inside the gilbert barn and others outside in overflow rooms. "we could have maybe gotten a bigger barn. they said wear a hat.

tonight because we're in a barn, but this is a pretty nice barn. it's a friendly barn." trump touched on many of the topics he usually does. he said he'll strengthen border security with a wall, that will be paid for by mexico. he said he'd repeal and replace obamacare. he said he'd make the military stronger too. "what we have going, and it's really important, it's a movement. it's not like a normal situation." on tuesday, trump previous debate he thought was "but despite those press releases and facebook posts, donald trump did not touch on his decision to not participate in that debate, but he did say wounded warriors." "we're going to raise a lot of money for the vets. that's what we're going to do. we're going to raise a lot of money." in the speech, trump also continued to tout his lead in many polls -- including the ones that give him a big lead in south carolina. the state's important 'first in the south' primary is

in that primary, 19-year- old cassie hendrix will be casting her first ever vote for trump. "well, i like trump a lot because he just kind of puts out his opinion. carolina many more times before the very important february 20th primary. in an interview on fox last night, bill o'reilly tried to convince donald trump to change his mind about the debate but trump wasn't having it. the feud with fox actually started last august after trump accused moderator megyn kelly of being unfair at the first fox news gop debate. tuesday, after trump said he might not participate in the debate, fox fired off a sarcastic statement basically telling trump to grow up. things escalated quickly --- within hours, trump said he was definitely out of the debate and would hold a competing event at the same time in iowa to raise money for wounded warriors. "well fox is playing games, yea. fox is gonna make a fortune. i told fox you should give money to the wounded warriors. i'm not a fan of megyn kelly. i think she's a third rate reporter. i think she, frankly, is not good at what she

trump is hosting today's event to benefit veterans organizations at drake university at 9pm, the same time his rivals will take the main debate stage ... about 3 miles away. the intended victim in a columbia barber shop robbery who fought back and shot at the robbers says he doesn't know what would have happened if he didn't have his gun. billy bookman was one of two people in the "next up barbershop" who pulled their own guns after two armed men in masks held the place up. they shot at the robbers and killed one of them. concealed weapons teacher brian sweat says based on surveillance video of the incident, the men who fought back did everything correctly and may have prevented victims from being killed. bookman says it looked like a dangerous situation and he was glad to be armed. "what would have happened if i didn't have it? you know, the guy was running around in here, just demanding money and yelling and stuff like that so, i mean i don't know what would have happened if i didn't have it." columbia police are still

they're still looking for another man for the robbery. anyone with information on that person should call 1-888-crime-sc. a trial date is now set for the confessed charleston church shooter. dylann roof's trial is scheduled to begin on july 11. documents show that 600 people will be called initially to serve as potential jurors. roof is accused of gunning down nine people inside emanual a-m-e church in june of last year. the fbi and oregon state police say they've arrested three more people connected to the armed occupation of a federal wildlife refuge. those arrests come just a day after a member of the group was killed, and the leaders were taken into custody by police and federal agents. jay gray has more. it happened along this stretch of highway 395.. a remote area police and federal agents say they picked, to reduce the chance of violence.. but as officers pulled over a caravan of leaders from an anti- government protest group..

refuge they have occupied for almost a month -- something went wrong.. "one man died as we attempted to take him into custody. because of the ongoing investigation. i can't comment on the details." fifty-four year-old lavoy finicum was shot and killed.. finicum had become a spokesman for the group.. and recently told nbc news: "honestly, there are things more important than your life -- and freedom is one of them." eight protesters were taken into custody -- including the group's leader... nevada rancher ammon bundy.. and his brother ryan.. who was treated for a gunshot wound after his arrest.. seven were in court for the first time this

passed a key committee vote yesterday. governor nikki haley recently asked the federal government to bar refugees from isis-held territories from coming to south carolina. the bill, which has wide support among republicans in the state house would impose an internet registry that would include the names and addresses of refugees and hold their sponsors liable if the refugees commit an act of terrorism. the bill is now headed to the senate floor. in less than 80 days the fireflies will be ready to play ball! columbia's new minor league baseball team unveiled the team's official team jerseys and hats yesterday. the a-c flora high school baseball team modeled the new uniforms. the fireflies will wear white jerseys with midnight blue hats at home.

circumstances are right. watson spoke tonight before the tigers' basketball game with pittsburgh. he was honored as the south carolina hall of fame's collegiate player of the year. watson says the nfl has always been a dream and is part of the reason he came to clemson. watson adds one of his goals is to have his college degree before he leaves. he is on track to graduate in december. he says if things go as planned, he'll give up his senior season to turn pro. here's that basketball game watson attended

d'an-dre-a muldrow/student at lower richland hs 22:13:34 elevations is a non-profit organization- it's a safe haven for teenagers after school. it's the brain child of charla simons who started the program in 2001.inside her home. charla simons 22:20:20 they were a lot of neighborhood kids who didn't have anything to do in the afternoons. so they would be at my house with my children.so i decided to bring the girls inside and teach them how to cook while the boys were outside shooting basketball and playing sports simons says four years ago she simons 22:20:41 it gave us a safe haven, a safe place where the students could come after school development and students say what mrs. simons has done for them.has had a lasting impact. 22:16:45 she's taught me so many things like to be myself in every situation. 22:14:23 she instills leadership in everybody because that's what she's teaching us to be. it's why they nominated her as a community builder.... 22:11:06 i'm kim o'quinn with mungo homes, and we're actually here to honor you

when there's someone in the car is what's been your most interesting experience. and i say well, do you really want to know?" his first anniversary as a lyft driver. it's a side gig for the financial consultant--but his last ride may have been the hardest job of his life. "this is definitely on top of my never forget moments." he received a ride request friday evening--one that was about 20 minutes away from his current location. the passenger called him repeatedly to make sure he was on his way. "he said we're going to the er my girlfriend is having a baby. and i said, are you sure?!" the man on the phone was sure.

"so right here is where i saw the norton kosair children's hospital emergency entrance so i said 'this is where we're going.'" the father ran inside for help and several nurses rushed to the car. "but it had already started happening--she had already started delivering the baby at that point, so they just finished the delivery right there in my car." the mother gave birth to sandra rose....6 and a half pounds and 20 inches long the next day--sandra rose received a special care package from her very first lyft driver. "that was definitely a first for me. so this was definitely a way to cap off my one year anniversary." that was samantha chatman reporting. a michigan baby has even more reason to show off that adorable

federal wildlife refuge are now in custody. and we're learning -- there may be a possible end in sight for the weeks-long protest. ammon bundy one of the leaders of the occupation is now telling his followers to go home. bundy made the statement following his arraignment. he and 7 others were taken into custody tuesday after a traffic checkpoint. one of those ranchers was killed after shots were fired. we're also learning from an unsealed criminal complaint that the armed group had explosives and night-vision goggles. authorities believe 10 members remain in the refuge. it is all the buzz in politics this morning: tonight's republican presidential debate without donald trump. will being a no-show help him or hurt him in iowa? nbc's tracie potts has more on that story from washington this morning. :00-:04 donald trump's feud with fox news and anchor megan kelly has led to one less candidate on stage tonight.

before heading to iowa -- donald trump was in the midlands last night where he picked up a big endorsement from one of our state's leaders. lieutenant governor henry mcmaster publicly threw his support behind trump at a campaign rally in gilbert, saying trump is the man to get things done. "south carolina is going to have the most decisive primary election this election cycle. we are going to be right in the middle of it and i want everybody to get out and vote and when you do, do like i do and vote for donald trump for president." trump promised the crowd in gilbert that he will be back to south carolina many more times before the february 20th republican primary. the clock is ticking for thousands of south carolinians who still don't have health insurance mandated through the affordable care act. that deadline is sunday night at 11:59. our michal higdon is live in the wis newsroom with important information to get you started on the enrollment process -- michal? health experts say just a couple of months ago -- more than 600-thousand south

not have health coverage. insurers say the biggest question they get from those looking to enroll is -- "how much is health care going to cost me?" that amount will vary based on your coverage needs. health care expert, lee patterson says she's seen plans cost as low as 15 dollars to upwards of 200 dollars a month. navigators with organizations throughout the midlands are trained to help you choose the plan best for you and your family's needs. patterson says it's typically an easy process to sign up for coverage, but she cautions consumers need to plan out time to go thoroughly go through the coverage they're signing up for. "people come in and think, 'i'm going to get in and get out and go about my day.' it's going to take a little "people come in and think, 'i'm going to get in and get out and go about my day.' it's going to take a little while. there are a lot of options to choose from. there are a lot of different plans, a lot of different numbers we've got to throw at you, and things to understand. health insurance is complicated. and so we do our best to make sure you leave here well-informed about the plan

the recent death of a lancaster county man has sparked yet another national recall of airbag inflators. joel knight was killed in december after his ford ranger collided with a cow. federal officials with the national highway traffic and safety administration say the airbag inflator deployed and propelled a piece of metal that hit and killed him. while previous recalls have involved older model vehicles ....this new one includes at least one 20- 14 model. knight's death is one of 11 now linked to faulty airbags from takata. "this is a completely avoidable tragedy where a man lost his life because of a product that was supposed to save his life." takata airbags released a statement saying quote: "our heartfelt condolences go out to the driver's family. we are cooperating fully with regulators and our automotive customers and continue to take aggressive action to advance vehicle safety, including through our ongoing testing efforts, replacement kit production, and raising

wants lawmakers to approve different methods of execution. executions are currently on hold in the state because the supply of lethal injection drugs expired. lawmakers are being asked to approve the firing squad, electrocution or nitrogen gas as alternates. democrat jim hood also says he wants to block names of people who sell lethal injection drugs and those who help carry out executions. the police department in ferguson, missouri has agreed to change its policies, training and practices as part of a deal with the u-s justice department. the overhaul stems from the 2014 deadly shooting of unarmed 18-year-old michael brown by ferguson police. the proposal is meant to correct problems that identified discriminatory practices across the city police force and municipal court system.

the man who killed three people and injured nine others at a planned parenthood clinic in colorado has been transferred to a state hospital for a mental competency exam. the judge ordered the exam for 57-year-old robert dear after he said he wanted to fire his public defenders and represent himself. the exam will show whether he's mentally capable of making that decision. dear is charged with 179 counts including murder, attempted murder and assault in the november attack. he has said he is guilty. the widow of the fox lake, illinois police officer who killed himself five months ago has been indicted. a grand jury indicted melodie gliniewicz on six federal counts for her alleged role in her late husband's theft of charitable funds. authorities say lieutenant charles gliniewicz killed himself back in september, but made it look like he was shot by suspects he was chasing. he was accused of stealing 10-thousand dollars from a charity fund. the couple is accused of using the money for a vacation and bills. no criminal charges will be filed against los angeles police officers who mistakenly shot at two newspaper

in the wis alert center this morning... a suspect wounded in the exchange of gunfire with a georgia state tropper near atlanta has died. officials say the suspect, 26-year-old israel vladmir rodriquez died late last night in the hospital. investigators says rodriquez was speeding at 100 mph when trooper jacob fields attempted to pull him over last night. the suspect led fields on a 10 mile chase down i- 75...when he eventually got out and began shooting. you can see that scene where traffic was backed up on the interstate for hours last night. we're told the officer is expected to make a full

don't know 18 or 19 strong votes of support in this committee, i personally would be very open to that." a senate transportation subcommittee tossed around ideas on how to revamp the selection process for dot commissioners as part of the reform plan. meanwhile, lexington is continuing to push forward with plans to improve town traffic. this month, the town has incorporated five new "adaptive" traffic lights. the lights are designed to count cars and change their timing based on the buildup at certain intersections. so far they've been placed where east main street meets church street and lake drive...as well as where west main street meets park road and old chapin road. 19 intersections are expected to be equipped with the new lights by this fall. a new house bill will allow the state to pay for high school students and those who are unemployed to train for available jobs in south carolina. the "pathways initiative" was approved to expand dual-enrollment opportunities for high school students. this means they can take courses that count toward their diploma and an associate's degree.

the recent death of a lancaster county man has sparked yet another national recall of airbag inflators. joel knight was killed in december after his ford ranger collided with a cow. federal officials with the national highway traffic and safety administration say the airbag inflator deployed and propelled a piece of metal that hit and killed him. while previous recalls have involved older model vehicles ....this new one includes at least one 20- 14 model. knight's death is one of 11 now linked to faulty airbags from takata. illinois police officic who killed himself five months ago has turned herself in to authorities.. a grand jury indicted melodie gliniewicz on six federal counts for her alleged role in her late husband's theft of charitable funds. authorities say lieutenant charles gliniewicz killed himself back in september, but made it look like he was shot by suspects he was chasing in an attempt to keep the crime under wraps. the couple is accused of using the money for a vacation and bills. 30 years ago today one of the great tragedies in american history took place as the space shuttle challenger exploded just 73- seconds after liftoff. all seven astronauts onboard were killed, including christa mcauliffe who was to be the first teacher in space. as part of nasa's annual day of remembrance -- those men and women will be honored along with other nasa personnel who have lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery. as concerns about the zika virus are spreading, one group is taking steps to contain it. ahead at 6:30 -- how they're

i'm len kiese. i'm mary king. it's 6:30. brand new information this morning as early primary races get ramped up... a new nbc-wall street journal-marist of how primary elections here in south carolina are shaping up. nbc surveyed likely primary voters in our state showing donald trump with a commanding lead as the likely winner in our state's republican primary race. 36-percent of likely primary voters say they will choose donald trump with ted cruz trailing at 20-percent. on the democratic side -- former secretary of state hillary clinton dominates the poll of likely primary voters at 64-percent. with challenger bernie sanders at 27-percent. these numbers released just days before he iowa caucuses on monday. meanwhile -- our top story this morning -- the republican presidential candidates will face off once more before the iowa caucuses. eight candidates who are leading the polls have been invited to participate in the primetime debate on fox news. but one will be missing tonight

more than 100 fbi agents and north carolina law enforcement were involved in the drug bust. police say they launched the undercover operation nearly 6 months ago in the belmont neighborhood. many of the suspects arrested have long records. if convicted, many of the federal charges carry 20 year sentences with fines of $1 million dollars per count. police say they are still looking for six people they were unable to locate during the raid. employees at a cayce bank of america are credited with helping investigators make a quick arrest after a robbery. investigators say 61- year-old tommy slife was arrested just minutes after he was accused of holding up the knox abbott drive branch yesterday. workers gave a detailed description of the suspect, which investigators say helped lead to slife's arrest just a short distance away. he's in lexington county detention center awaiting a bond hearing. columbia police hope recent surveillance photos will help nab a man accused of stealing money from a local convenience store.

"what we have going, and it's really important, it's a movement. it's not like a normal situation." on tuesday, trump said he won't participate in tonight's debate on fox news, because of a previous debate he thought was unfair. instead, he'll host a competing event in iowa -- a benefit for veterans.

in gilbert that he hopes to state senators will meet again today to discuss south carolina road repairs. yesterday, members of the senate finance committee met to agreed that more money needs to be put into bridges and highways. some lawmakers discussed a new tax cut which would lover the state's five persent sales tax. that would bring in money to offset the senate's proposal to raise the gas tax and fees to bring in an extra 665 million dollars for roads. "if we can come together on a different verison of tax relief that can generate i don't know 18 or 19 strong votes of support in this committee, i personally would be very open to that." a senate transportation subcommittee tossed around ideas on how to revamp the selection process for dot commissioners as part of the reform plan. a new house bill will allow the state to pay for high school students and those who are unemployed

devry university is being sued by the federal trade commission for ads that it said "deceived" students. the ftc says it's suing the university for reportedly misleading students about job prospects after graduation. attorneys filed the lawsuit yesterday. the agency is taking issue with statistics used in advertisements since 2008. they say the ads claim that 90-percent of people who have graduated since 1975 have found jobs in their preferred field. devry college said in a statement that the lawsuit is without valid legal basis and that it will be vigorously contested. a new story developing this morning... mississippi's attorney general wants lawmakers to approve different methods of execution. executions are currently on hold in the state because the supply of lethal injection drugs expired. lawmakers are beiei asked to approve the firing squad, electrocution or nitrogen gas as alternates. democrat jim hood also says he wants to block names of people who sell lethal injection drugs and those who help carry out

michigan governor rick snyder has put together a 17-member team tasked with finding long term solutions to flint's toxic water problem. on tuesday -- nbc news reported that none of the contaminated pipes had been replaced, and snyder said wednesday that there are on immediate plans to do it. in a press conference, he said that's something the new committee will work on, but the state is looking at other solutions for now, including chemical cleansing. some say getting those pipes out should be the immediate priority. scientists with the british branch of a u-s firm are targeting the zika virus with genetically modified mosquitoes. the zika virus has been linked to brain damage in thousands of babies in brazil, and health experts are expecting it to spread to other countries in the americas. scientists with oxitec hope to deploy a genetically modified strain of mama mosquitoes to mate with unmodified female mosquitoes of the same species. oxitec says its genetically modified mosquito succeeded in reducing wild larvae of one type of
