challenger broke apart on live t-v killing all seven astronauts on board. that's because one of their own dr. ronald mcnair was on board that flight. our chad mills joins us live in lake city where mcnair's family joined community members in a vigil. it's a vigil that's been happening every year since 1986. they normally hold it here at the memorial dedicated to him, but tonight, because of the rain, it was held indoors. on this 30th anniversary, many of mcnair's surviving family members were also here to mark the tragic occasion. in this lake city church, 73 seconds of candlelit prayer and silence seems like an eternity as friends and family of ronald mcnair think back to a cold january morning 30 years ago. a day when mcnair, along with six other astronauts, lifted off from cape canaveral aboard space shuttle challenger's short,

carl mcnair "something was very strange about this launch. the solid rocket boosters were veering to the left and veering to the right and there was, obviously, an explosion. my immediate thought was, 'this is some crazy sci-fi movie.'" but mcnair's brother, carl, and the rest of the world quickly realized it wasn't that. all seven astronauts died just 73 seconds into the flight, including mcnair, a native of lake city. carl mcnair "i stood there and essentially just broke down and cried. my wife came out and asked me what was wrong, and all i could do was point to the television set." but mcnair's legacy is still alive which is very evident in his hometown. his remarkable story of growing up here hasn't been forgotten 30 years later either. carl mcnair "during that time it was during the time of segregation." back in 1950, at just nine-years-old, ron refused to leave a segregated library without being allowed to check out some books. some of those books are now on display in the library whoch has been re-named the ronald mcnair life history center. carl mcnair

audio outcue: i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, des moines, iowa. donald trump's competing event tonight took place just across town from the republican debate in des moines. trump chose to hold his own benefit rally for veterans after he refused to take part in fox new's debate tonight. former arkansas governor mike huckabee and former pennsylvania senator rick santorum both were there. fox news channel says trump demanded a $5 million contribution to his charities in order to appear in thursday night's debate, which the network rejected. "for me personally is it a good thing? a bad thing? will i get more votes or bad? you're going to like it because we raised over $5 million in one day. over $5 million in one day." santorum joked he did not want

next to the trump campaign sign. huckabee had earlier stressed his appearance was not an endorsement of trump...but tonight said quote "we are all collegues" in supporting veterans. tonight--a new leader has been selected to take over the lexington district one school district. the district's board has named doctor gregory little as superintendent at a special meeting. little was one of three finalists the board narrowed down earlier this month. he currently serves as superintendent of mount airy city schools in north carolina. he takes over for doctor karen woodard, who announced her retirement at the beginning of the school year. bond has now been set for three men locked up after a nearly year-long investigation into an organized drug ring raheem jackson, telly jones, and jermetres kirkland each being held on 125 thousand dollars bond. this all comes after a home search by the newberry county sheriff's office, the newbery police department, and sled which turned up drugs and multiple firearms. investigators say say they found crack cocaine,

pistols--one of which was reported stolen last year. they say they also found more than 1000 dollars in drug money. the centers for disease control is warning about a potentially dangerous type of virus that is spreading throughout central and south america. the zika virus, as it is called, is transmitted by mosquitos and can cause birth defects in unborn children. so far at least 31 people in the u.s. who have traveled overseas have been diagnosed. health experts say symptoms can appear in common forms like headache, joint pain, fever, rash, and inflammation of the upper eyelid. tonight steve crump talked to health officials and travelers about what you can do protect yourself. at the international arrivals area of charlotte douglas, global health concerns are taken with a great degree of seriousness. bring up the issue of the zika virus to overseas travelers, and it's easy to find

tonight the national oceanic and atmospheric administration says the snow storm is the fourth- most powerful one to hit the region in more than 60 years. a noaa spokesperson says it affected 102 point 8 million people and covered about 434 thousand square miles in 26 states. the biggest regional storm still goes to one that hit in 1993--and dropped more than 30 inches of snow from mississippi to maine. a bank manager in north carolina is credited with thwarting a bank robbery--and it was all caught on camera. police say a person wearing a mask tried to come in the back door of the pnc bank in the town of zebulon, which is west of raleigh, shortly after the bank opened this morning. security video shows the manager held the door shut after he saw the would-be robber coming.

the man showed a small, black handgun and used it to hit the door. he eventually ran off after he couldn't get in. with more than a week out from super bowl 50--crews were out today getting the host field all ready for the biggest football game of the year. workers painted the turf at levi's stadium in santa clara with the nfl logo on the 50 yard line and team colors of the panthers and broncos in the end zones. crews say they worked about 15 hours each day to lay down the brand new sod field. about 70 thousand fans are expected to attend the game. and president obama may be skirting around in choosing his favorite to win the super bowl...but tonight he weighed in on the game that everyone is talking about. you're not going to bury them in the first quarter....they're always going to have an extra gear. ole miss was no different in having that gear.and fortunately for us we were rolling on both sides of the ball. i think sometimes when we made some substitutions..it took us a while to impose our will on what they were doing and what they were giving us on the court. the carolina panthers are the betting favorite for super bowl 50...the cats are favored by less than a touchdown...the denver broncos and their quarterback peyton manning are the sentimental favorite. there's speculation this could be his final game after 18 seasons of setting nfl records. the 39 year old manning has struggled with injuries the past few years. it's obvious he's lost some arm strength. a number of fans would love to see peyton go out with his second super bowl victory.
