the final republican presidential debate before the iowa caucuses went on as scheduled -- and without donald trump. the gop frontrunner was just three miles away holding a campaign event of his own. karin caifa reports from des moines. fox news had an extra podium to the side of the stage. they said they didn't expect to use it, but had it just in case donald trump made a last-minute decision to

live report from iowa later this morning right after sunrise. last night, family and friends gathered at a vigil in honor of robert mcnair, a south carolina every year since the space shuttle tragedy. chad mills has the story. in this lake city church, 73 seconds of candlelit prayer and silence seems like an eternity as friends and family of ronald mcnair think back to a cold january morning 30 years ago. a day when mcnair, along with six other astronauts, lifted off from cape canaveral aboard space shuttle challenger's short, final mission. carl mcnair "something was very strange about this launch. the solid rocket boosters were

and veering to the right and there was, obviously, an explosion. my immediate thought was, 'this is some crazy sci-fi movie.'" but mcnair's brother, carl, and the rest of the world quickly realized it wasn't that. all seven astronauts died just 73 seconds into the flight, including mcnair, a native of lake city. carl mcnair "i stood there and essentially just broke down and cried. my wife came out and asked me what was wrong, and all i could do was point to the television set." but mcnair's legacy is still

evident in his hometown. his remarkable story of growing up here hasn't been forgotten 30 years later back in 1950, at just some of those books are now on you define your limits." his older brother says ron tackled self-doubt later in life at north carolina a&t state university, where he briefly decided to study music before an advisor convinced him that physics was his calling. he graduated from there and m-i-t before being selected as an astronaut in 1978. he flew a successful mission aboard challenger in 1984 and became the second african-american in space. it was his second mission aboard challenger two years later that ended in tragedy. carl mcnair "he set his sights high on education." now, carl and many others are using ron's legacy to impact others. thehere hoping children, from all backgrounds, will follow in his footsteps. carl mcnair "let them know that they're good enough to go try and apply.

you can't possibly have a chance to win." columbia native general charles bolden, who's now the administrator of nasa, has said if it weren't for mcnair, he would have never applied to become an astronaut. mcnair was given an honorary doctorate from in 1984. the usc mcnair center for aerospace innovation and name in 2011. a new leader has been selected to take over the lexington distriri one school districtct the school board named doctor gregory little as superintendent at a special meeting last night. little was one of three finalists the board narrowed down earlier this month. he currently serves as superintendent of mount airy city schools in north carolina. he takes over for doctor karen woodard, who announced her retirement at the beginning of the school year. a bank manager in north carolina is credited with thwarting a bank robbery--and it was all caught on camera. police say a person wearing a mask tried to enter the back

of zebulon , which is east of raleigh, shortly after the bank opened thursday. security video shows the manager held the door shut after he saw the would-be robber coming. according to a police statement, the man showed a small, black handgun and used it to hit the door. he eventually ran off. richland county deputies say they've identified a man wanted for an attempted murder at a gas station last month. they are looking for 19- year-old yakiem breeland. they say on december 26th, breeland was involved in a shooting at the circle k gas station on hardscrabble road. the victim has since been released from the hospital. deputies say if you know where breeland is to call crimestoppers at 1-888- crime-sc. bond has now been set for three men locked up after a nearly year-long investigation into an organized drug ring. raheem jackson, telly jones, and jermetres kirkland are each being held on 125-thousand dollars bond. this all comes after the search of a home by the newberry county sheriff's office, newbery police department, and sled which turned up drugs and multiple firearms.

donald trump wasn't there. but for the candidates who were, several top issues were discussed. the most contentious -- immigration. specifically an amendment ted cruz offered in 2013 that would have allowed some undocumented immigrants a chance to earn legal status. cruz defended an amendment to that bill as a "poison pill" that killed comprehensive immigration reform that included a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. but a video montage showed at the debate included a number of clips during that time in which the texas senator defended his amendment as the only way the legislation could pass. other senators weren't buying it. rand paul: "he is the king of saying 'oh, you're for amnesty.' everybody's for amnesty except for ted cruz. but it's a falseness." marco rubio: "the truth is, ted, throughout this campaign you've been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes." ted cruz: "when i ran in texas, i told the people of texas that i will lead the fight against amnesty." chris christie: "this is why you need to send someone

"anywhere where the mosquitoes exist you could see infections in the future. it could spread further north, it could feasibly get into the southern united states and it could potentially go back into africa." as the virus spreads from brazil, other countries in the

of babies with zika-linked birth defects. students and teachers at one ohio elementary school are being warned not to drink the water. the state's environmental protective agency warns there could be possible lead contamination. the district shut down the drinking fountains and sinks at gurney elementary school as a safety precaution. during the investigation, school is providing bottled water to their students and staff in the meantime. at least 66 students and adults from texas are being treated at area hospitals after a carbon monoxide leak at a middle school. according to first responders, 180 people were affected by the poisonous gask leak at marshall middle school, and 66 were taken to hospitals. the cause of the leak is believed to be a boiler that malfunctioned. some students were taken to a nearby high school and were triaged there. friday through monday will be mostly sunny with highs from near 60 friday and approaching 70 by the end of the weekend. the next good chance of rain

and-oh after taking care of business at colonial life arena last night. usc hosted the ole miss rebels in an sec matchup. this game was all gamecocks, with the women taking a 14 point lead into halftime, and finishing it off in the second. usc wins 81 to 62. here's coach dawn staley after the game. any team that you play in this league...you know you're not going to bury them in the first quarter....they're always going to have an extra gear. ole miss was no different in having that gear.and fortunately for us we were rolling on both sides of the ball. i think sometimes when we made some substitutions..it took us a while to impose our will on what they were doing and what they were giving us on the court. the women will be back in action this sunday. they'll be on the road in a

you. a court hearing will be held today for jason van dyke, the chicago police officer accused of fatally shooting a teenager 16 times in 2014. van dyke is charged with first-degree murder for the death of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald. the indict alleges that van dyke acted without lawful justification when he shot mcdonald. van dyke has pleaded not guilty. the so-called affluenza teen is back on u-s soil and will appear in court today for a mandatory hearing. 18-year-old ethan couch is expected to find out whether he will receive bond or be moved to an adult prison. he arrived in dallas on thursday. couch was put on probation after killing four people in a drunk driving crash back in 2013. couch and his mom were arrested in mexico on december 28th. the detroit federation of teachers has announced a lawsuit over deplorable school conditions in the city. the suit alleges the detroit public school district allowed schools across the city to deteriorate to the point where some are unsafe. the school district is also reportedly providing a minimally sufficient education

place documenting the conditions. residents in southeast florida are recovering this morning after a tornado ripped through the area. the national weather service confirmed a tornado touched down in delray beach on thursday. winds reached up to 85 miles-per-hour, knocking down trees, fences and power lines. surveillance vidid shows patio furniture being lifted into the air and winds nearly blowing one man away. over 700 people lost power. one of the cars used by pope francis during his visit to philadelphia last fall is available at auction. the pope traveled around the city in two fiat 500-l model cars. one of them will remain on display at the philadelphia auto show... the other fiat is up for auction during a black tie gala to be held at the auto show today. organizers say the proceeds will benefit select ministries and missions of the archdiocese of philadelphia. friday through monday will be mostly sunny with highs from near 60 friday and approaching 70 by the end of the weekend.

following last night's republican debate....people in iowa are now a little more informed about who they think should get their support in the caucus monday. the 7 g-o-h candidates touched on everything from federal spending to immigration. our michal higdonons live in the studio with the details. one thing that all the candidates seemed to agree on last night were vows to stop isis both overseas and the threat here in the united states. in last night's fox news debated, the candidates laid out clear differences in how to do so. florida senator marco rubio called the threat from isis quote -- "extraordinary and unprecedented" and said the group "needs to be confronted." he didn't offer many specifics, though he criticized the obama administration for its current strategy. former florida governor jeb bush called on arming kurdish fighters and creating a sunni arab force in syria to confront isis. ohio governor john kasich stated if we want to

the air and on the ground. despite some differing issues on how to accomplish taking down isis, all agreed the terror group must be stopped. ted cruz: "i will apologize to nobody for the vigorousness in which i will fight terrorism, go after isis, hunt them down wherever they are, and utterly and completely destroy isis." marco rubio: "isis is the most dangerous jihadist group in the history of mankind. isis is now found in affiliates in over a dozen countries. isis is the group that burns people alive in cages. isis is the group that sells off little girls as brides. isis is the group that wants to trigger an apocalyptic showdown." ben carson and chris christie were not questioned about foreign terror. but christie made a reference to the san bernardino shooting -- saying people should use their common sense when reporting something suspicious. carson says he has a "teddy roosevelt" philosophy -- anyone from around the world is welcome if they want to be american, if not they

officially open its new post headquarters named after a south carolina army general who received the medal of honor. major general george l. mabry, jr. joined the army in sumter after graduating from presbyterian college in 1940. general mabry earned the medal of honor in world war ii for his actions in germany where he cleared the way through a german minefield and captured three german bunkers. he had landed with the fourth infantry on the beaches of normandy on d-day. general mabry retired in 1975. the new post headquarters opens at 2pm today. a small south carolina town came together for a vigil last night -- to mark the 30th anniversary of the challenger disaster. many people in the small town of lake city, south carolina can remember where they were and what they were doing 30 years ago when space shuttle challenger broke apart on live t-v killing all seven astronauts on board. that's because one of their own dr. ronald mcnair was on board that flight. back in 1950, at just nine-years-old, ron refused to leave a segregated library in lake city without being allowed to check out some books. he was selected to be an

general who received the medal of honor. major general george l. mabry, jr. joined the army in sumter after graduating from presbyterian college in 1940. general mabry earned the medal of honor in world war ii for his actions in

the way through a german minefield and captured three german bunkers. he had landed with the fourth infantry on the beaches of normandy on d-day. general mabry retired in 1975. the new post headquarters opens at 2pm today. a small south carolina town came together for a vigil last night -- to mark the 30th anniversary of the challenger disaster. many people in the small town of lake city, south carolina can remember where they were and what they were doing 30 years agogowhen space shuttle challenger broke apart on live t-v killing all seven astronauts on board. that's because one of their own dr. ronald mcnair was on board that flight. back in 1950, at just nine-years-old, ron refused to leave a segregated library in lake city without being allowed to check out some books. he was selected to be an astronaut in 1978. national wildlife refuge in oregon. officicis showed video taken by an f-b-i plane that was overhead during the incident. they say lavoy finicum's vehicle tried to maneuver around the roadblock and got stuck in a snowbank. when finicum got out of the truck he reached toward his pocket and was shot.

refuge. we're learning more about the arrest of an english teacher accused of helping three inmates escape from a california jail last friday. 44-year-old noo-sha-farin ravaghi was arrested thursday and is being charged with aiding in the escape. investigators believe she provided google maps and other materials to help the three inmates prepare for the escape. she's one of 5 people arrested this week in this investigation. the three inmates remain on the loose, police believe they could be living in a white van. two huge sinkholes opened up on the same street in oregon thursday. the largest of the two took out most of the travel lanes on highway 101. the second sinkhole is right across the street. both opened up within a short period of time. that section of road is now closed for repairs. the time is now . coming up, we'll have one final
