candidates are criss- crossing iowa as the state holds its first-in-the-nation caucuses. 30 delegates are up for grabs in the gop race. 44 delegates in the democratic race plus an additional 8 super delegates. with severe weather looming in iowa, it is time to see which candidates voters there want to see as their next president. tracie potts has more from des moines. marco rubio this morning... visiting a diner outside des moines and downplaying expectations: presidential candidate "we're the underdog but we feel good about it." he calls ted cruz iowa's frontrunner, but donald trump is leading the polls. trump tells the today show... he's not claiming a win just yet: presidential candidate "everybody's a threat, matt. i think everybody in the race is its politics." at this point, it's all about the ground game. keeping volunteers energized -- natshillary at campaign office "i'm feeling so energized because of you!" hillary clinton brought donuts and coffee this morning: presidential candidate "we've got thousands of volunteers, we knocked on

there's just so much excitement." dr. ben carson tells me anything over 10 percent is a win for him. he's got people working tonight in all 99 counties. presidential candidate "they're gonna be saying look, uh, do you guys wanna listen to your heart or listen to the pundits? and i think it's going to have an effect." turnout is key. if lots of new voters show up - especially young ones, it could be a good night for bernie sanders. "young people are really upset. we're just getting into the political scene, seeing a lot of things, how they're managed - and we don't like it." looking for change - tonight is their chance. together, the republicans alone have made more than 12- hundred stops across iowa. i'm tracie potts in des moines, iowa. even though iowa offers only a small contingent of the delegates who will determine the presidential nominees.....a win or good

candidates leading into the primaries. so the outcome in iowa could have an impact here in the palmetto state. here's michal higdon to explain. voters here in south carolina will be watching the iowa caucuses closely -- but ultimately the votes tonight will weed-out certain candidates. in the past several elections, the winner of the iowa caucuses has not typically been the winner here in the palmetto state. on the republican side, mike huckabee won the iowa caucuses in 2008 and rick santorum won in 2012. on the democratic side, president obama won in 2008 and 2012. but the iowa caucuses vote tonight will be who will remain the race. matt moore with the south carolina republican party says the iowa race is like a filter process. after new hampshire -- the south carolina primary becomes the big test with several hundred thousand people casting their vote. matt moore: "i think our primary will be very pivotal regarding what happens on march the

later when all the southern states vote. so south carolina will be a bellwether for the southern states." jaime harrison: "i always believe that it will come back to south carolina to be that decisive voice to determine who is going to be the next nominee." south carolinians will cast their vote in a matter of weeks. and we're getting our first look at likely primary votes here... the latest nbc news poll has donald trump leading the republican race at 36 percent. with ted cruz following at 20 percent. on the democratic side -- hillary clinton is the clear favorite with 64 percent. and bernie sanders is polling at 27 percent. those voting in the republican primary will go to the polls on february 20th. and the democratic primary will take place the following saturday on february 27th. reporting from the studio, michal higdon, wis news 10. after iowa, the focus will shift to new hampshire. and this week, the democratic presidential candidates take the stage for a town hall there.

event wednesday at 8 o'clock. meanwhile, the democratic national committee says it's secured sponsors for additional debates during the primary schedule. the next is scheduled for this thursday night at 9 o'clock. msnbc will host that debate. the new hampshire primary is next tuesday. and while hillary clinton campaigns in new hampshire, her husband former president bill clinton will be in columbia. he'll be meeting with democratic leaders at the state house on wednesday and then speaking at a rally at allen university. the rally starts at 6 p-m and doors open at 4. we have a link to rsvp for the rally in this story on wistv-dot-com. that's where you can also find complete decision 2016 coverage. there, you can find an entire section devoted to the race for the white house. tonight, people in lexington will hear from their mayor during his annual "state of the town" address. mayor steve macdougall is expected to talk about everything from recovery efforts after the historic floods...to achievements the town has made.

at 6:30 tonight in council chambers on maiden lane. the public is invited to attend. new at noon... a man is facing charges after kershaw county deputies say he broke into a home and try to steal things. investigators say kristopher dixon broke into a home on tower road in elgin on saturday. deputies followed footprints leaving the home into the woods and found dixon after a bloodhound team was called to the scene. investigators say dixon had put stuff set outside the home to be carried off later. dixon is in kershaw county detention center where he remains pending a bond hearing. we are working to get more information on a 19-year-old columbia woman whose body was found on friday. deputies say deanndra roach was discovered in a field off farrow road in blythewood. the victim's ex-boyfriend, 22-year-old andre heatley jr. is now in jail, charged with murder and armed robbery. investigators believe heatley shot and killed roach, then stole her debit card using it three times right after the murder.

carolina couple facing drug charges in newberry county. stephen taylor and bridgette clark were spotted in a car parked behind a restaurant on s.c highway 34 near interstate 26 last week. the newberry county sheriff's department says the driver was "acting suspicious." after searching the car, deputies found drugs, more than $4000 cash and a handgun. coming up on the news at noon... the details into a deadly amtrak crash set to be released this afternoon. what the documents are expected to reveal. plus, the danger of the zika virus. world health leaders meeting to discuss if they should declare a international health emergency. break one

investigators will release more than 2- thousand pages of documents on the deadly amtrak train derailment in philadelphia. the documents include interview transcripts with the train's engineer, brandon bostian. in may of last year, the train was going 106 miles-an-hour-- more than twice the speed limit, when it derailed at a sharp curve. eight people were killed and more than 2-hundred injured. the ntsb investigation will also include black box data, interviews with first responders and images from the scene. a fire lit up the early morning sky over los angeles after the massive fire engulfed an industrial building. propane cylinders and combustible storage items fueled the flames of this fire, sending thick black smoke over a business area. more than 140 firefighters battled the flames, there are no reports of injuries. today a team of experts are making one final attempt to salvage a cargo ship that's been adrift off the coast of france for six days. high winds and 20-foot waves made any weekend attempts impossible. spanish helicopters evacuated

after the modern express, carrying 36-hundred tons of wood and equipment, sent out a distress call. today marks 13 years since the deadly explosion of the space shuttle columbia. the shuttle broke apart during re-entry with debris raining down over rural areas of texas. six american astronauts and israel's first astronaut were killed as they returned to earth from a 16-day science mission. shuttles were grounded for more than two years after the explosion. investigators said the damage was caused 82 seconds after liftoff when foam from the external fuel tank fell and damaged the left wing. the world health organization is in the middle of a crisis meeting to talk about the spread of the zika virus, and if it should be declared a global health emergency. are considering whether international efforts to fight the outbreak should be immediately ramped up. the w-h-o last declared an

"physical inactivity is a killer." a new survey from cardiologists at the cleveland clinic finds 40-percent of us 5 days a week... of walking, biking, lifting weights... any kind of moderate physical activity... goes a long way in improving measures of cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. fitness experts say - start small and stay realistic. "don't expect to lose 20 pounds in that first month. don't expect to go to every class, you know, five days a week, right in a row." just as exercise can help prevent heart problems... it's equally important for people already living with heart disease. doctors say they should be getting just as much physical activity as anybody else. "now the one caveat i would say to that is that......they should build an

3 students at river bluff high school are heading into their final hours of an international competition. they're finalists in a global world series of innovation challenge required to design an app. it's being called the "helping hands" project app for smartphones. the students say their app was inspired by october's floods. during the floods, they noticed how many people wanted to get involved in volunteering and decided their creation could help direct people in the right direction. "i'm really proud of it, i feel like it came together good. i feel like my team helped out. we all seemed to agree on what we wanted the app to do." voting ends tonight at midnight. all you have to do is head to the world series of innovation website and click on the challenges section. we've added a link for you on wistv dot com under the big red 10. on most smartphones, there's a feature or an app that emergency personnel like medic or police...really wish you would use.

the gamecocks fell behind in the second quarter when the aggies scored 15 straight points. but in the second half, usc showed its poised and took control of the game. the gamecocks complete the comeback, winning 70 to 63, now 21-and-oh on the season. the going won't get any easier for the usc women in the next 7 days. thursday -- the gamecocks host kentucky at colonial life arena. and if they win -- they'll be undefeated as they head into what would be the game of the year next monday. a number one versus number two showdown at home against the defending national champion uconn huskies. the gamecocks and huskies met in a similar fashion last season, when the huskies handed usc its first loss of the season. the gamecocks were the number one team before that loss. a massive wave knocked a surfer off his board off the coast of maui, swallowing him whole, and it was all caught on video. you can only image what was going through surfer tom dosland's mind
