at many of those sites. -- sot -- "tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across iowa, and all across this great nation." in the republican race -- ted cruz had branded himself as the true conservative in his battle with donald trump. and his retail politics, and heavy courting of the evangelical vote -- gave him a win. meanwhile, trump -- perhaps the most humble we've seen him in this race -- thanked the iowa supporters for his second place finish. -- sot -- "i was told by everybody do not go to iowa. you couldn't finish in the top ten. i said i have friends in iowa, i know a lot of people in iowa, i think they'll really like me." on the democratic side - a virtual tie. hillary clinton did not suffer a loss like 8 years ago, but the results marked a stunning turn from the solid lead she held in the polls here late last year. clinton acknowledging a real challenge from sanders, and sanders applauding how far his

"if i think about what happened tonight, i think the people of iowa have sent a very profound message to the political establishment." -- karin on cam -- and as is usually the case after this first contest, we did see some candidates exit the race. former maryland governor martin o'malley, who failed to gain traction for his democratic bid suspended his campaign monday night. on the republican side, mike huckabee failed to turn a 2008 caucus win into 2016 success has also announced his exit from the race. in des moines, iowa, i'm karin caifa. the question now is how the

campaigning before the palmetto state's very important primaries. our chad mills talked to a couple of political experts. first question to the experts -- is too much emphasis placed on iowa? political expert scott malyerck... "we put way too much emphasis on the caucuses, i think, because it's really a test of organization ability. can you organize your folks? can you get them to go out and caucus in somebody's home and stick with you?" malyerck points to past g-o-p winners like huckabee and santorum, who ultimately failed to capture the nomination. u-s-c political science todd shaw has a bit of a different take. "iowa is not bellwether in all cases, but let's keep in mind that iowa sort of set a tone for obama's election in 2008 that, if he had

voters in south carolina would have been a little less sanguine about his chances." next question -- could the group of candidates in the south carolina primary be smaller than in iowa and new hampshire? "probably by new hampshire you'll begin to see candidates, particularly, you know, folks who keep making it to the second debate, really think about their chances." "you have to ask yourself, 'do we stick it out? do we hope against all hope that we're going to do well in new hampshire?' i think after new hampshire, you'll definitely start to see people drop out before they get to south carolina." a few other points, shaw says south carolina will become very important to hillary clinton if she does poorly in iowa and new hampshire. "south carolina has to become

because south carolina has a large, you know, african-american population, of course, and that population is critical to the democratic party and it's coalition, it'll be some indication about that coalition or that coalition especially south carolina. carolina in conservative senate seems to be attracting liberal that was chad mills reporting. shaw also talked about trump's strong lead in state's like south carolina. he says that support seems so strong that it's transcending questions of whether or not trump is actually a rino which stands for republican in name only. after a better-than- expected showing in iowa tonight, senator marco rubio could pick up a big endorsement in the palmetto state. cnn reports that senator tim scott plans to endorse rubio today. this potential endorsement could be key as the candidates start focusing more attention on south carolina. rubio, showed he's far from out--placed just one point behind trump in the iowa caucuses.

have a break down of the delegate count coming out of iowa now that most of the poll numbers are in. ahead of the "first in the south" primary here in south carolina later this month--presidential candidates from both parties have been invited to weigh in on issues of faith. the conservative leadership project says the 2016 "faith and family presidential forum" will be on february 12th at bob jones university in greenville. that's just over a week before voters will go to the polls for the gop primary. the forum will be moderated by attorney general alan wilson and oran smith of the palmetto family council. columbia police want to talk to this man who was caught on surveillance footage. investigators tell us he is a "person-of-interest" in a sexual assault case. early saturday morning, police say a woman reported being sexually assaulted by a man in the 800 block of barnwell street--in between the usc campus and five points. police have not named the man as a suspect--but are asking anyone that can identify him to call crimestoppers at 1-888- crime-sc.

connection with the trafficking of two teenagers for sex in richland county. deputies with the richland county sheriff's department say investigators rescued a teenage victim inside the suspects' home after another teenage victim--who was being treated at the hospital gave them information about the assault. quincy bright is charged with two counts of human trafficking and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. brittany gray-bright is also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. the victims were taken into protective custody. the city of columbia is changing its policy on the use of tasers by police. the matter will be the topic of a resolution before the council today. the change comes in the wake of a fourth circuit court of appeals ruling. the court says police should only use the devices when there are elements of safety and a threat of immediate danger. the court says non- compliance by a subject is not sufficient justification.

a pivotal court hearing is happening today in the case against bill cosby, who's charged with three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault for allegedly drugging and sexually assualting a woman at his pennsylvania home in 2004. more than 50 women have accused the star of sexual misconduct. his lawyers have denied the allegations and vow to fight them all. dan scheneman reports. bill cosby will be back in court later today, a little more than a month after he was arrested on sexual assault charges. cosby's defense team is asking for the case be dismissed because of a deal they say the former district attorney made ten years ago not to prosecute in exchange

officials in honduras declare a state of national emergency this morning after the world health organization calls for an international emergency in the zika outbreak. health officials have recorded more than 36- hundred cases there in the past 3 months. brazil is also responding to the declaration...expressing confidence that there will be good conditions for athletes ahead of the 2016 summer olympics. other south american countries also on alert... colombia began passing out insect repellent to residents there. the virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and is being blamed in devesating birth defects in babies born to mothers who became infected while pregnant. the federal aviation administration is investigating a single- engine plane crash out of texas that killed one plane instructor. investigators say the plane instruction was flying with a passenger at the time of the incident. officials say the plane lost altitude and crashed on the runway. the plane clipped one stationary aircraft and landed on another before it

dead on the scene, and the passenger is in a hospital and is in critical condition. the 'tiki gods' were smiling on a southern california restaurant after powerful wind gusts sent a 150-foot palm tree crashing through the roof. the tree came barreling down on the "ven tiki lounge" in ventura, narrowly missing four people seated on the patio. employees could be seen running into the restaurant's security camera as the tree snapped in two. the patio, roof and awning were all damaged, but nobody was injured. the stormy weather in southern california is causing significant damage throughout the los angeles area. one home undergoing remodeling work collapsed amid windy, rainy weather. neighbors say after the house came down, they could hear the hissing from an apparent gas leak. the home was under construction due to cracks in the foundation, and that, combined with the fierce winds, may have lead to the collapse. tuesday, partly cloudy, breezy and warm, highs in the low to middle 70s.

curve at 106 miles-per-hour, which is more than n ice the speed limit of 50 miles- per-hour. eight people were killed and more than 200 were injured in the crash. so far, the ntsb says there is no evidence that engineer brandon bostian was texting before the crash and there was not a problem with the train tracks. the ntsb will hold a hearing in april to announce a preliminary cause of the derailment. police say three teenagers have been charged in the shooting at a seattle homeless camp last week that left two people dead and three others injured. the suspects were said to be 13, 16 and 17 years of age. their names have not yet been released. police have said they believe the deadly shooting stemmed from a drug-dealing dispute. 45-year-old jeannine zapata and 33-year-old james tran were killed in the shooting. the french navy successfully began towing a cargo ship that has been drifting on its side off the french atlantic coast since last week. four specialists were lowered onto the ship from a helicopter and they attached the ship to a spanish tugboat.

concerned the freighter would have run n round if a renewed attempt to tow it to port had failed. it was transporting fourt housand tons of wood with machinery. authorities say a virginia man flying from washington, d.c., to jacksonville had to be restrained after attacking another passenger and two flight attendants. 36-year-old joseph sharkey is charged with assault or intimidation of a flight crew. he faces up to 20 years in prison. sharkey was said to have verbally assaulted another passenger on sunday and then placed that passenger in a headlock. sharkey then reportedly fought with two flight attendants. he'll be in court tomorrow. a tampa man is in police custody after authorities found eight pipe bombs and bomb-making materials in his home. fbi bomb technicians and tampa police served a search warrant at the home of 24-year-old michael ramos. ramos reportedly expressed anti- government sentiment and acknowledged being in possession of explosives. besides the bombs, agents reported finding an ak-47 semi-automatic rifle, a

cruz says his victory shows the power of his supporters against what he portrayed as an array of establishment forces. cruz defeated donald trump after consistently trailing the billionaire businessman in iowa polling as the campaign wound to a close. he expanded his campaign in iowa and visited all 99 counties in the state. senator marco rubio thanked his supporters for his stronger than expected showing in the iowa caucuses. the florida senator outperformed most of the recent polling data. with a majority of caucus precincts reporting results, rubio came in third, close behind donald trump in second, and ted cruz in first. "tonight, here in iowa, the people of this great state have sent a very clear message. after seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer to take our country back." recent polls have showed donald trump with a big lead in new hampshire...

rubio's showing in iowa will create new difficulties for trump in the first in the nation primary state. meanwhile, it was a close call for the democrats in iowa last night. reports just out this morning say hillary clinton defeated democratic rival bernie sanders in the iowa caucuses by a historically close margin of point 3 percent. clinton thanked the crowd and later declared to supporters that she will work to move the country forward. s/hillary clinton/ "as i stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you iowa.. s/bernie sanders/ "as i think about what happened tonight, i think the people of iowa have sent a very profound message to the political establishment, to the economic establishment, and by the way to the media establishment." the question now is how the results in iowa might shape campaigning before the

important primaries. our michal higdon is live in the newsroom with the details. new hampshire is the primary up next for all candidates with the south carolina primary following for republicans and the palmetto state is the fourth stop for democrats. south carolina the results could be very different than what we saw last night in iowa because in the south carolina primaries you go into a ballot box and cast your vote without anyone knowing... so the intimidation factor isn't't there like it could have been in iowa. the leaders of the polls in south carolina so far are donald trump at 36 percent on the republican side and hillary clinton is polling at 64 percent on the democratic side,. side and hillary clinton is polling at 64 percent on the democratic side,. experts say that is how voters are feeling right now but it ultimately will come down to how people vote. 6. and chelsea clinton will make her first campaign swing through the palmetto state on saturday. clinton will attend women for hillary events in rock hill and spartanburg. she will then address clemson university's program in women's leadership. ahead of the "first in the south" primary-- presidential candidates from both parties have been invited to weigh in on issues of faith. the conservative leadership project says the 2016 "faith and family presidential forum" will be on february 12th at bob jones university in greenville. the forum will be moderated by attorney general alan wilson and oran smith of the palmetto family council. the council says at this point more than 5 leading republican candidates have already agreed to attend. the city of columbia is changing its policy on the use of tasers by police. the matter will be the topic of a resolution before the council today. the change comes after a fououh circuit court of appeals ruling. the court says police should only use the devices when there are elements of safety and a

dropping a child on a mat. take a look at that cell phone video. police say it shows kimberly reid striking the four-year-old boy multiple times with what appears to be a stuffed animal. the video then shows reid holding the child about three feet in the air before dropping him face down on a mat. the child was not hurt. reid was arrested and charged with child abuse. police say there is no evidence that any other children in the daycare were abused. two people have been charged in connection with the trafficking of two teens for sex in richland county. investigators rescued a one victim inside the suspects' home after another victim-- who was being treated at the hospital informed them about the assault. quincy bright is charged with two counts of human trafficking and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. brittany gray-bright is also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. the victims are in protective

columbia police want to talk to this man who was caught on surveillance video. investigators say he is a sexual assault case. police say a woman reported being sexually assaulted by a man saturday morning in the 800 block of barnwell street-- in between the usc campus and five points. police have not named the man as a suspect-- but are asking ananone that can identify him to call crime-sc. a candlelight vigil will be held today for a 19-year- old woman killed by her ex-boyfriend. a vigil for deanndra roach will be held tonight at the vive church on clemson road from 4 to 7 p-m. investigators say roach was shot and killed by andre heatley, jr. sometime thursday night or early friday morning. her body was discovered late friday afternoon. deputies say it was the roach's stolen debit card that ultimately led them to heatley. deputies in fairfield county have arrested a man charged with animal abuse. 48-year-old billy ray huskey is

marco rubio tied with trump as well with 7. and ben carson with 3. of the 50 democratic delegates -- hillary clinton wins iowa with 21 pledged delegates. bernie sanders -- 20. that's all according to nbc news. the iowa caucuses are just the beginning of candidates looking to secure the presidential nomination for their party. and ultimately it comes down to those delegate numbers. our michal higdon is live in the newsroom to explain more on why delegates are so important -- michal? each candidate will essentially need to have enough delegate votes in order to receive nomination. there are some big differences in delegate votes between the republican and democratic parties. in order to win the 2016 democratic presidential nomination, a candidate must win 2,383 delegates at the national convention -- which is one vote more than half the total of delegates at the democratic national convention. south carolina holds 53 of those pledged delegate votes. on the republican side -- a candidate must win 1,237 delegates at the republican national convention to win the nomination.

helping inmates escape a california jail is now free this morning. 44 year old noo-sha-farin ravaghi was released from prison overnight after charges against her. the iranian-born english teacher who worked at the jail was suspected of helping one of three escaped inmates. investigators alleged she provided the inmates with a google earth map that showed an aerial view of the jail complex.

evidence and arguments over the legality of north carolina's photo i-d requirement for voters.. attorneys for the state who defended the law and lawyers for the u.s. department of justice and ate naacp, which challenged it, made closing statements monday after the six-day trial ended. there are questions about whether the law would be a road block for minority voters. it is supposed to take effect in time for the march 15 primary. a ruling is at least several weeks away. the national transportation safety board has released its report on last year's deadly amtrak train derailment in philadelphia. it says the train was going more than twice the 50- mile-per-hour speed limit as it entered a curve back in may. the ntsb says there is no evidence that engineer brandon bostian was texting before the crash and there was not a problem with the train tracks. the ntsb will hold a hearing in april to announce a preliminary cause of the derailment. teenagers have been charged in the shooting at a seattle homeless camp last week that left two people dead and three others injured.

"tonight, here in iowa, the people of this great state have sent a very clear message. after seven years of barack obama, we are not waiting any longer to take our country back." recent polls have showed donald trump with a big lead in new hampshire... but trump backers now say rubio's showing in iowa will create new difficulties for trump in the first in the nation primary state. the question now is how the results in iowa might shape campaigning before the palmetto state's very important primaries. our michal higdon is live in the newsroom with the details.

deputies in fairfield county have arrested a man charged with animal abuse. 48-year-old billy huskey is accused of injuring a dog. the incident happened on camp welfare road near carolina adventure world back in december. the dog -- known as "emanuel" was taken to a local vet who said the dog appeared to be injured by someone dragging it behind a vehicle. vets say emanuel had to undergo surgery for his injuries. huskey has been booked into the fairfield county detention center. it's not the way you want to start your week with the biggest game of the year just days away. up next on sunrise -- the denver broncos team buses get wrapped up in an accident. what police say caused the crash. fog will be an issue in some areas this morning

the 'tiki gods' were smiling on a southern california restaurant after powerful wind gusts sent a 150-foot palm tree crashing through the roof. the tree came barreling down on the "ven tiki lounge" in ventura, narrowly missing four people seated on the patio. employees could be seen running into the restaurant's security camera as

the patio, roof and awning were all damaged, but nobody was injured. the french navy has successfully started towing a cargo ship that has been drifting off the coast since last week. we showed you the video yesterday of the ship out at sea tipped on it's side after the crew had to abandon during rough weather. a couple highly trained specialist were tasked with the brave jop of boarding the ship from a helicopter and tying it to a tugboat.. authorities said they were concerned the freighter would have run aground if yesterday's attempt did not work. talk about crashing the party. on the same day that festivities started for this weekend's super bowl, the denver broncos team buses were involved in an accident. the accident happened shortly after a practice session. two of the buses hit each other after a car cut one of them off, and the crash also took out a highway patrol car that was providing an escort. none of the broncos players were injured. the highway patrolman did suffer minor injuries. this all happened just hours ahead of the new version of super bowl week media

in central florida of a daycare center director allegedly hitting and dropping a child on a mat. take a look at that cell phone video. police say it shows kimberly reid striking the four-year-old boy multiple times with what appears to be a stuffed animal. the video then shows reid holding the child about three feet in the air before dropping him face down on a mat. the child was not hurt. reid was arrested and charged with child abuse. police say there is no evidence that any other children in the daycare were abused. president obama and house speaker paul ryan are set to meet one-on-one today for the first time since ryan became speaker of the house last october. the two are expected to have lunch in the oval office after a meeting that includes senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. the men are expected to discuss the president's fiscal 2017 budget request and areas of common

bill cosby will be back in a pennsylvania criminal court today. cosby and his attorneys are trying to get a criminal sexual assault case against him thrown out. he has been charged with three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting a woman at his pennsylvania home back in 2004. more than 50 women have accused cosby of sexual misconduct. the three inmates who escaped from an orange county, california detention center last month faced a judge for the first time since their capture over the weekend. investigators revealed the fugitives argued over the life of a cab driver who they had kidnapped while they were on the run. they eventually decided to let the man go. the inmates are hossein nayeri, jonathan tieu and bac duong. duong surrendered last friday, while nayeri and tieu were arrested saturday morning. fog will be an issue in some areas this morning as we'll see patchy dense fog and mild temperatures "backdoor" cold front is over the area this morning it will come through dry and no temperature change as we start out in the middle 50s partly
